Why I choose slow living over the hustle culture

  • Living slowly is hard. We live in a world that idolises being busy and always working to climb the career ladder.
For a while, I felt that I had to do the same. Work became my life and I let go of any hobbies that I do just for enjoyment.
Like many of use, lock down changed my pace of life. This is what inspired me to start my blog and, eventually, choose to work part time with no intention to hustle my way into a higher pay grade. I choose to live slowly and its had a dramatic impact on my happiness.
I hope you enjoy this weeks video and, as always, thank you so much for watching.

Gorgeous walk, thankyou for taking us with you :) Loved this video and I can really relate as I decided to quit my job and do a similar thing last year. It's interesting how I then have the tendency to busy myself with other things, just learning to slow down now - like you say it's so counter-cultural but it feels so healing and so necessary for me. Wishing you well with your new ventures :) P.s where did you get your top, I love it!

I quit corporate America 8 years ago. I have been slowly cultivating a real life for myself. I still have to work but I now work as a librarian aide. I go home everyday at a set time and enjoy my time off, not having others calling or texting me when I not at work. I enjoy it. I know people look down on me because I don't hustle anymore. It's ok. I don't need those people either. I enjoy crocheting, rescuing cats, simple cooking and right now, I am redoing my house, slowly.

Some people live so obsessed with work, it's shocking to me. I understand I have to work, that's how the world is going to keep working for a while if you want to be part of society, but I'm not sacrificing my health for wealth if I'm going to suffer the last few years of my life in terrible pain. The body is a tool. It's our link between our mind and the physical world. Don't wear your body out more that you need to.

I agree with this message. I'm a professional computer engineer, and I've been asked a few times if I want to get certain promotions, and they'd result in pretty decent pay upgrades, but much more stress. I'd rather just work what I need to do to pay the bills, and focus more on being happy outside of work, even if that's a more modest lifestyle.

Yet you cannot be happy without meaning
Once you arrive to happiness or comfort or contentment you realise it is surprisingly short lived and dare I say, shallow, compared to 'meaningful work' or a 'higher calling', whatever this might be
But it is always a good idea to try it for oneself and reach one's own conclusion

One of the best books I ever read was "Your Money or Your Life" by Joe Dominguez. He was one of the pioneers of slower, more mindful living back in 1992. There were other publications that dealt with certain aspects of slower living up to that point (many had been written for decades), but he developed a practical, financial roadmap for anyone who wished to slow down. It was revised in 2018, so it's still current thinking. I knew I did not want to lead the 9-5 until you die life, especially in the highly competitive, stressful field of litigaion, so I practiced what the book recommended, and led a debt free life. Most people who walk into my home have no idea I'm not earning what I used to, as my home is lovely. They do notice I have time to enjoy my life, and the people and places in it. I'm glad to see this is taking root in a new generation. Just discovered your channel. You are a voice for your generation and I congratulate you.

I did that for a very long time and (being quite tired now), have stepped back form it, event though I could be making a lot more money. But what would I do with more? Nothing. There is not one material possession, not one, that feels as good as not owing a penny to anyone and being satisfied and grateful with just necessities. Working 70-80 hours a week? For what? To pay massive bills of debt that have you in a stranglehold of wretched servitude? I am so blessed to have a boring life that I can live on my terms, because I live within my means. If I can’t pay cash for it, I don’t get it. I am so glad that I am not driven by the materialistic demands of this world, nor greedy for meaningless, wasteful excess….wasting your life over things which are of absolutely no worth in the final analysis. I’ve never heard a person on his/her death bed state how they wish they had more time to work longer hours to have that larger house or that new Lambo. When you owe money and have debt, the hard truth is that your life will NEVER be your own.

I am 51 and after suffering a severe burnout in 2015 due to work pressure I started to see life and living differently. Since then and lock down and watching videos like this my eyes finally opened to what living actually is and should be.
Having the luxury to enjoy peace, quiet, having time to live a quality life and learn how to live a balanced life with your loved ones are so much more valuable than living a fast track life with luxuries or just barely surviving without really living it. I also studied, got my degree, had a lot of aspirations and then 2015 happened.
Still in the same job as I need to make provision for retirement, but I am saving more money for my old age and if all goes well I shall retire earlier. In the meantime I am reminding myself daily what is important in life.

Hi Molly! I think also working in Wildlife Conservation, the thing that blocks me the most from my ideal of not wanting to climb the ladder or eventually wanting to switch to part-time is the ideal of being completely dedicated to one's career and passion. I remember being an intern in biology labs and seeing researchers that did so many extra hours, thinking that was what I wanted, loving my job enough that I would want to do the same. So sometimes when I consciously make time for hobbies over work it's hard to shake the sense of guilt or feeling selfish.

In the US, many recent graduates are saddled with heavy student loan debt, and a job with hustle and high pay seems the only way to cope. Alas, it is also a bit of a trap. Life can change in an instant. Live right now! True to yourself

The Navajo say our life purpose is ; joy , peace , happiness and confidence. They call it walking the path of beauty. I craved success and material things but the universe had other plans for me which I am grateful for as I am so much happier with less , with nature , with being alive and breathing , with making art. Everything unfolds when you bring intention through your heart and joy. For feeling like an imposter , there is a poem by Rumi, called Guest House. welcome your demons in with kindness and care , as they are not you and therefore don't define you.

This video and your thoughts resonated with me in so many levels! I also went through all this process in my life: I have a background in architecture, which I love, but always struggled trying to find the balance between my passions and life/mental health. The big difference is that I took "a bit" longer to be at comfortable place with myself living at a slower pace (almost fifteen years!), but I am happy that I feel whole and in the right direction today. Wow, sorry for the huge message, and thank you so much for inspiring me to think about it. Cheers from Canada 💛

Hello from country Australia! Some algorithm brought me here and I am delighted. My husband and I visited Scotland in October 2019, and we were mostly in Glasgow, the Inverness area and St. Andrew's. Oh, we could have stayed for months! I love to walk and hike and where we are, in a country town, nestled between hills and some mountains, I enjoy a lot of gorgeous nature. But your walk topped it all. I enjoyed hearing a little about your approach to life and although I could not find that exact book in our library system, I borrowed a similar one by Lola Akerstrom. I applaud you for your choices and your happiness is evident - looking forward to more.

I so resonate with this, I saw this at the correct time! I’m a postdoc in marine biology and got offered two permanent researcher jobs and one consulting job (I know - a privilege). I have gotten a taste of the researcher lifestyle the last year and I honestly miss field and bench work and did not enjoy all the project management, grant writing and decisions you need to make all the time as a researcher. I ended up taking the consultancy job. But I’m scared and was like your friend very flattered and tempted by the other really great options.
Must note that I’m badly burned out and have been in several sick leaves while making my decision..

Thank you for a truly authentic and honest video. I am a new subscriber, and agree with your philosophy and ethos. Am just returning to work after being away for 5 months due to a workplace injury. Have been thinking about my present time and future, and what brings me the greatest joy and calmness. And that I really want to be in the moment, one moment at a time. The very opposite of being 'busy' and 'multitasking'. I will be practising this in my workplace, and more importantly, in the rest of my life, too. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Have a truly delightful and fabulous day!

First video watched! Subbed! Your dog! Looks so much like one (only my pup has bent ears). I agree about working - I don’t want or need a lot of money, trading life for dollars. I work 22 hours at a library and soon a few more for a non-profit. That’s plenty for my lifestyle.

Just found your RUclips channel, so glad I did ... All my life I have been very driven and never allowed myself time to rest and " just be". I remember my Doctor telling me if I did not slow down I was going to have an accident or burnout. I had both and life as I knew it changed and I was no longer able to run my own business and work 100 hrs a week whilst being a single Mum. I was just starting to feel I was beating the ME/Chronic fatigue when my beautiful boy, my only son Rhys was suddenly killed 2 years ago and through this trauma I have realised what really matters in life and what makes my soul sing which it is starting to again. I need to feel more connected to nature and have simplified my life so much.
    It feels good.
I respect and admire you for realising this years before I did and living life from the heart.
Rhys's motto was " just do it" so now I do whether that is swimming in a very fresh pool in Pembrokeshire or sitting outside late at night stargazing... we all need to create happy memories and just be in the moment.
Thankyou for your lovely video and your merchandise is beautiful, I shall be buying a top.
