The only thing that saves this movie for me is the Battle between Superman and Clark Kent, personally one of the greatest comic book movie moments of all time especially when Clark says to Superman "you know I can give it just as good as I can take it" and Superman responds with "well bring it on" that to me still gives me chills to watch, Richard Pryor works well in the movie but everything else just falls apart, I liked the Smallville story but it was badly executed.
Ah, Superman III, the precursor to Batman Forever and Spider-Man 3, the third installments to the Batman and Spider-Man franchises that instead of going really dark, they went for comedy. Superman III was the first one of these superhero threequels to do this.
If I had to choose between Superman III and Batman Forever, I'd choose Batman Forever because they focused more on themes of revenge and power. Superman III doesn't concentrate on themes. Does it have a message? No. Batman Forever may have been silly at some points but at least it focused on themes and I'm not sure whether there was a message but if there was one I'd say it was "Revenge isn't the answer". Superman III's message? There wasn't one.
@CubbieBear1980 It is Lana Lang. She's suposed to be Clark's high school sweetheart, a relationship that never quite worked out but they still have enormous affection for each other, and the dynamic that sometimes makes it interesting is that she's one of the only people who knows Clark is Superman. Even knowing that, it's still a relationship that didn't pan out. Unlike Lois, Clark and Superman being the same person doesn't seem to factor so much into the equation. -CL
I do not understand why the studio simply didn't go with the original idea of having Brainiac as the villain of Superman 3 instead a super computer and an evil Superman.
@Geekvolution Apparently, the orignal script (at some point) the film was supposed to include Brainiac (the Real Brainiac, not Gus' computer), Supergirl, and Mr. Mxyzptlk. Thoughts?
technically the computer could make kryptonite through nuclear reaction, assuming that kryptonight is made out of atoms and assuming that the computer has the resources to make a reaction (which it would have to if it can make any other element on demand in the first place.
I've always thought it interesting that (I think at least) Superman's build in this film is probably closet to the comics or is that just me? Of course Christopher Reeve had put on weight since Superman 1 but I do think when he bulked up for 3 it made his build appear closer to the comics than previously seen.
I thought the same thing, myself, many years ago... I was talking about it with a few of my friends during my 6th grade year of middle-school & "If only..." was the only thing I could say about it, at the time & I still say that, to this day about it.
Think how good that would have been for a followup to S2. It would have saved the franchise and we may have seen some more films in the 80's and early 90's.
IIRC, Lois never printed anything about kryptonite. She printed his inability to see through lead allright, but Superman's weakness to the green was something that Lex figured out through plot convenience.
first Annette O'Toole is Lana Lang and then she played Miss Kent in Smallville and then you even have Christopher Reeve make a cameo as a sort of mentor to clark again in Smallville
Superman going nuts... THAT is a good excuse to pit Batman against him. All Bats has to do is distract him long enough for whatever's playing with his brain to wear off. Nowadays, writers seem convinced that just because they disagree with each other on some points, that means they ALWAYS have to be at each others' throats. Ugh...
Evil Superman should have gone the same route as General Zod, and go about taking over the world. That would have been interesting. Furthermore, classic Superman villains such as Metallo, Parasite, Toyman, and (*yes*) Lex Luthor should have been brought forth, teaming up to thwart evil Superman's plans of world domination. After all, it's the villains'' world too. Oh, but those glorious Reeve/ Donner/ Williams days are sadly long past. Perhaps on a parallel earth? Oh, but that's yet another Superman tale to be told.. ;) p.s. Excellent & intelligent review, Captain Logan. I truly enjoyed it. Thank you.
A MUCH more entertaining instance of "Evil Superman" comes in Superman: The Animated Series. The episode is "Brave New Metropolis" and centers around Superman going psycho after botching a Lois rescue.
It’s funny, as a kid, I knew it wasn’t as good as the first two but couldn’t think of why. Then as I’ve gotten older, whatever questions I had about this movie have been brushed to the side and now I only have nostalgia for it. But this review has brought up those questions and explained them. I still don’t think I could ever hate this movie (like I’ll always hate IV) but now I wonder if this ovoid could ever be remade and have those issues fixed.
Not a fan of love triagles, huh? Well, I wrote a whole poem about how this could work. I like Lana Lang, she's a far more interesting character than Lois. I wish they could have done more with her, maybe even have her in Superman IV.
I find it kind of neat that Lana Lang is the same person that plays Martha Kent in the tv series Smallville. Too bad the two never had a scene together in Smallville while Reeve was still alive. :(
I don't think it's making Kryptonite, but scanning Superman to find a type of radiation that can harm him and then emitting just the energy that Kryptonite would normally put out. So somehow it can do at least that
Personally, my biggest complaint was the lack of continuity as far as romance was allowed in Superman's life. In Superman II, didn't Clark have to give up his powers to be with Lois? But that's not an issue where Lana's concerned?
The reason why Gus's computer was able to create a kryptonite radiation because Gus had used Ross's computers to determine the correct elements of kryptonite. Even Ross's ugly sister proclaimed that 'this time they got it right". when the computer created a kryptonite beam. No doubt they anticipated Superman opposing them at some future point.
There's some Black K, that splits the person into one good, one bad (from the show Smallville), and another version of Black K in All Star Superman makes him talk like Bizarro andact like one too.
I agree with the Captain for the most part. The film isn't anything to write home about, and outside of the Clark vs. Bad Supes fight, and some other key scenes, the film as a whole is anything but memorable. Though I will saw the Smallville scenes do have a certain charm about them.
Man they should add Brainiac in this movie but the Brainiac character will be played by Michael Keaton who did Batman (1989) but he Sholud played Brainiac in Superman 3 (1983) with Christopher reeve!
@thesyfychannel15 Great idea to use Morgan Edge, really any incarnation of him could be effective. I actually like the mob boss version from Smallville, but part of that was an excellent actor (at least, before he got a face-change). -CL
I actually want to see condiment king in the next batman, only to see how hilarious it will be. So batman is like "HOCKEY PADDDS" and the the condiment king then says "Lets cut the mustard" and shoots alfred in the face with some dejon mustard, and he dies from being allergic to the substance. Batman then finally breaks his one rule, but not on the joker (his arch-nemesis and one of the few villains that fans want batman to kill, simply for an interesting outlook on the universe. In fact, an els
Minor point. In the Animated Series Brainiac leaves Krypton to its fate because there is not enough time to save it. Even the Superman: Unbound (2013) Brainiac didn't actively destroy Krypton but let nature take is course.
@Geekvolution And yes, the LL thing seems goofy, but remember, most of this stuff was dreamed up in the 40s and 50s, when those kinds of conveniences were pretty commonplace. You want contrived? Throw Lex Luthor in there too! And how about all those stories where Lois and Lex nearly get married! -CL
I agree with you for the most part, but I can't help thinking you're taking a SUPERHERO movie a little too seriously. What I like about the Superman movies is that they don't take themselves seriously, which makes them so lovable. But with that said, I agree that Lester was TERRIBLE, and clearly didn't take Superman seriously enough. Also I'm biased - This was the first movie I ever watched, as in, I was 2 years old and it's the first movie I ever remember watching and I loved it but now know
the Gus computer should of been in the middle or close to beginning of the movie and would of been a great opportunity to create Cyborg Superman instead of the woman and red kryptonite would of made more sense in the computer and he is transformed and stripped of his good side but through the movie, he fights himself but more in mind battle where he returns and destroys computer freeing Superman from the Cyborg enhancements and turned back to good.
I still like the movie for bad reasons. I still think Smallville felt like Superman's home. The fight scenes were interesting and the rescue scene in the beginning of the movie is the best one ever. Wish Richard Pryor was funnier as I was a fan of him. Batman Forever style of him would've been satisfying.
what? brainiac destroys krypton? i thought in the that animatedserries, brainiac, who realized that krypton was going to be destroyed, decided to hide that fact in order to save himself? you had no idea superman had no imagination? why did he never expose lex for his crimes? i know, lex runs metrapolis and a whole lot more, but its not like the world will stop if he gets punished for his actions for once.
You do know this is a movie about a man that can fly and somehow fights an evil version on himself? Its kinda like ur trying to make sense out of something thats already insane.
Richard Pryor was one of the greatest entertainers of all time missused horribly here. He would have made an interesting peter parker. Today DL Hugly's public persona wisecrack's like Richard Pryor writing for Peter Parker. May make sense to bring a comedian in to rewrite the lines to flow comedically within a real story.
This isn't a movie where you can be logical. But look at it this way: Just because Krypton is an alien planet doesn't mean we don't share the same elements. The computer says 'unknown', maybe someone forgot to program all the elements into it. The real question is how do they know they got it right?
To be honest I found Robert Vaugn's character Webster in the film to be a better Lex Luthor than the film series actual Lex Luthor(s) Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey.
Originaly Brainiac, Supergirl and Mxyzptlk were gonna appear in the movie, but the studio didn't like that idea......let me repeat that: It wasn't for budget problems, it wasn't for copyright issues, it was because the studio didn't like using charachers from the comic book and instead they used....this guys. Great review and analysis of why this film doesn't work. I'll add a couple of points. The scriptwriters (neither Puzo nor Mankeweitz(?) were involved. The film feels very calculated, the exact opposite in spirit to Donner. The missile attack effects at the end feel cheap and a cheat when they change to video game graphics. Aah, Richard Pryor. An actor whose very presence is an announcement: "THIS IS THE 80's". Even when it's off by a year or two. I thought "what? An evil corporate tycoon other than Lex Luthor?". I suppose that's not so crazy, but it still seems wrong. Part of the trouble with Smallville is that Hollywood has *never* understood rural America. Never. 12 years too late but I agree. Just saw the movie and the only scenes I enjoyed are the smallville scenes and the clark battle
Much like Highlander: The Source is considered a bad fevered daydream of Duncan MacLoed, this and Superman IV is a bad fevered daydream of Kal-El.
Ah, Superman III, the precursor to Batman Forever and Spider-Man 3, the third installments to the Batman and Spider-Man franchises that instead of going really dark, they went for comedy. Superman III was the first one of these superhero threequels to do this.
Jack Howard Dont forget Blade Trinity.

"Terrible--not especially interesting, but terrible." Classic.
Thank you for a great review!
@Geekvolution I forget, what was Lois's role or purpose in this film? was she just in the background ?
@CubbieBear1980 It is Lana Lang. @Geekvolution
Which one is your 100. review?
technically the computer could make kryptonite through nuclear reaction, assuming that kryptonight is made out of atoms and assuming that the computer has the resources to make a reaction (which it would have to if it can make any other element on demand in the first place.
the kyrptonite ingridient is not found on earth, plus how would they know what the element is? superman never says what it is
Lana Lang was frickin hot in this movie.
waht is the opaning song
Wow, Annet O'Toole went from being Clark's high school crush to being Clark's mom!!!
I know right? I actually kinda found her very attractive in Smallville.
Robert Vaughn was the Samuel L. Jackson of the 60s, 70s and early 80s. He was in EVERYTHING.
I enjoyed Superman III more than Superman Returns to be quite honest with you.
I enjoyed Superman 3 more than any Superman movie
@@mws755 it's pretty much a fun film to watch
so the real smallville that you know does not have a train station and or airport? just asking.

when he makes the kryptonite that missing ingredient is what makes superman bad and not weak. That's how iv always understood it
@juken16 Will do! Supergirl will probably happen this year or early next year.
-CL
Did Superman destroy the Fortress of Solitude at the end of this movie?
superman 2
Not a fan of love triagles, huh? Well, I wrote a whole poem about how this could work. I like Lana Lang, she's a far more interesting character than Lois. I wish they could have done more with her, maybe even have her in Superman IV.
Actually, there's a line that Robert Vaughn says that they found the right kryptonite ingredient and programmed it into the computer.
I know a LOT of people will disagree with men, and I can see why people HATE this, but I LIKED Superman 3.
please do a steel and supergirl review

You know what they should add The Super Villain name Brainiac played by Sam Neill in Superman 3 (1983) not just Richard Pryor!
Personally, my biggest complaint was the lack of continuity as far as romance was allowed in Superman's life. In Superman II, didn't Clark have to give up his powers to be with Lois? But that's not an issue where Lana's concerned?
i would call the fight between superman and clark an inner struggle but i dont think the filmmakers were smart enough to think of that
I remember that the woman being turned into a robot just freaked me out, that's were the film turned from kid friendly to HR Gieger horror
The best thing about this movie is that a plot point from it was used as a plot point in Office Space :D
Everything you said makes sense but the battle in the junkyard scene is worth the price alone
Clark Kent vs. Superman is one of the best scenes in the movie. Sam Raimi tried something similar in Spider-Man 3(2007).
The reason why Gus's computer was able to create a kryptonite radiation because Gus had used Ross's computers to determine the correct elements of kryptonite. Hey Captain Logan, imagine if Superman 3 had been done by Donner.
Why is it your channel is called Geekvolution, but you always call yourself "Captain Logain?"
Richard Pryor was the jar jar binks of superman movies
He straightens the Leaning Tower of Pisa? So his idea of vandalism is to fix something. Yeah, that makes sense.
The Condiment King is dastardly, don't underestimate him.

I really hope BrainIAC gets used in Man of Steel 2, yes he's that awesome and so much of a good villian.
Brainiac is now in Superman 3. My remake.

Ok, not great films, but he does punch people sometimes.

Great review and analysis of why this film doesn't work. I'll add a couple of points. The scriptwriters (neither Puzo nor Mankeweitz(?) were involved. Pryor is taken out of his normal context and left without any way to be actually funny or relevent. There is no dramatic or emotional connection with I & II.
You can't have a Superman who is 100 % evil and killing people with an evil plot. Think about it
@BRm2008 It was actually going to be Brainiac but that idea was thrown out the window!! they really spoilt it!! it would have been a brill trilogy!!
This movie was weird, I remember the skiing down a building scene and the toy penguin scene.
can't wait for steel then
No mention of the the other lady henchman that turned into that creepy robot thing at the end. That was a horribly bad classic scene
As a kid I loved this movie and so do my kids. Superman Movies is the best but this movie gets a hard rap
eh, i still enjoy it more that supes 4 & it about ties with returns. but as a kid watching this movie i always thought it was a halfassed movie version of brainiac & bizzaro.
Continued- Elseworld's story would be interesting if batman killed joker) It turns out he kills the Condiment King. The end.

Villians should have obviously been Brainiac and Bizaro. Hahah Richard Pryor could have played a humorous Brainiac or clumsy henchmen
Love this series.
And I could give a rats ass about an explanation for Clark leaving supes body. That sequence was worth the price of admission.
THERE'S THAT SPOILER WARNING! Nice guys... good job...
Never. Small towns, agricultural communities, extended families... these are always sloppily cardboard-ized in movies, sadly.

11:26, so true.
