Exact same problem on my own Trane a few years ago. Repair guys came and fired the parts cannon right away instead of intelligently diagnosing it. I was tired of waiting for them to order parts and play the guessing game while I ran emergency heat, so I found the fault myself. At least I ended up with a free spare DFC and TDR board under warranty. Same black tape fix, too!
I’ve ran into this at least 8 times in the last 3 months, for Goodman and Rheem Heatpumps. Usually the first thing I check now. I work in the South Atlanta area. Good catch!
The first one I had with a bad contactor took me forever, I was new and didn’t want to call someone and be clown of, the very next shorted one was the wires on to of suction line, I learned them pretty quick. Great job on the repair.
Great video I'm fairly new to the hvacr trade also new to your channel as well and your channel is very informative and helpful. Thanks keep up the awesome work 👍🏿
Nice job, I had this problem on a Daikin HP, the other day, those short testers are life saves, I've seen a lot of them do the exact same thing, now I just automatically remove the condenser wires from the tstat wires at air handler, and replace fuse most of the time it will fire right up and I head to the condenser. Contactor and pressure switch, and tstat wires rubbing on copper I check first. Won't believe how many dogs chew those outside wires lol
very common problem with the newer rheems. soon as they say nothing comes on/ no power to the thermostat.and its a Rheem. i will go directly to the condenser. possibly only having to go to the air handler one time.
Rheem carrier goodman bard they have same problem sometimes the defrost t stat wire also at least its not high voltage and blows a hole in copper lines
I carry Automotive wire loom the 2 wire size Just for this situation, On many of my service calls even if even if that is not the problem I'll cover the wires with wire loom To prevent any future problems
Irony of time and manufacture , exactly the same , tape and zip ties , day and night always had loose leads to compressors on package furnace RTU s usually cooked them no protection on sheet metal punched holes not even deburred or supported correctly...✌️💪👍🙏🤔😔⚡🔥
Without past experience that would have been a right pain in the posterior to fix. It could easily have been an intermittent fault. Call back after call back :(
I never thought to check a short like that, I'm going to steal that and claim it as my own. Good job sir
Great catch.......
Great find on that, I think the buzzards we’re hoping you didn’t use the disconnect 🤣🤣. Stay well
Experience is a good thing. Good call.

I bet I've come across 10 trane units each year with same Issue. Something we should probably look at when we install. Good video Curtis
I was thinking the same thing, because I install these.
Really simple issue that take experience to find as quickly as you did. Good job.
Great find, I like how you troubleshoot problems.

Nice job, Curtis. She'll have heat tonight.

Have seen so many Goodman/Amana units with the same problem. I used to put a piece of tubing insulation over the wires to prevent a repeat.

Thanks 🙏. I’m glad they help.

Good catch Curtis thanks for sharing your skills with us you got a big fan in California 👊
Thanks
Had the same problem on my unit.. It fried the board twice before i found it!! And a contactor.
Damn man, good find
Another job well done sir!
Great find, expierence shows
🤓👍 Good man
Sometimes shorts can be a bear cat to find... Nice efficent job !!
Good job
I was under the impression that it was code are those disconnects to be right outside behind the condensing unit... At least it is here where I live
Icp and Goodman are notorious for this same issue.
I’ve been a tech a year now, seen this about 5 times already

Great video thanks !
thats why you charge on what you know. ty bro
The Rubaduski!
Disconnect that far away is major code violation here.
Rheem carrier goodman bard they have same problem sometimes the defrost t stat wire also at least its not high voltage and blows a hole in copper lines
I found the same issue a few months back

nice! for whom the bell toll's! awesome video
Did you not check the charge , even though it was a short? Cost of call should include a charge/ indoor heat check....just saying. Go DAWGS !!
Most of the Goodman heat pumps have horrible wire runs and rub out
Good job bird doggin' that one. 😎👍
Can it wait till Monday ,no it’s getting down to 65 tonight
HEY ANY ADVICE WHAT DO YOU USE TO RECORD YOUR VIDEOS WITH JUST CAME ACROSS YOUR CHANNEL THE OTHER DAY
GoPro
Do all transformers buzz like that?
Normally…As soon as I say yes, I’ll find one that don’t. But, that’s pretty standard.
what kind of camera are you using?
I’ve recently switch to the GoPro Hero 10
A lot of guys would’ve condemned the board first
Go Olympics! Love me some games! Good video
Some ice skater chick did a Quad spin!

Sometimes they will only short when it rains hard! Depends on how much it’s rubbed
Booyeah! For a penny's worth of heat shrink, Rheem could have prevented that.
👍
411 thumbs up
