What I like about this style is that although it isn't for me, its girls doing makeup to not impress men but to instead please themselves. I know most of us ladies do makeup for ourselves, but I like how obviously extravagant this makeup is. It's almost like it says 'Who cares what you think? I feel happy with myself.' It's not a style for me, but I respect it.
That's actually kind of how all of these extravagant trends started in Japan! A lot of women were like,"eff everyone telling me who I have to be etc." And all these big trends started happening! It's really cool. Like woman empowerment!

I believe some yamanba/tsuyome manba did though, which is old school compared to what you see the past years

i admire this so much, how they take a look that already stands out alot ("california gal" and make it as obnoxious as possible in order to rebel against the boring japanese society full of norms and high morals. they look totally amazing too, this is what i love about japanese culture!! 💖

I love watching these makeup applications but sometimes it seems like they look better from afar. Up close everything is very...uh...not neat lol the end result is pretty interesting though.
I totally agree. I cringe at how sloppy the application is. But then again maybe they are like me. I suck at putting makeup on people but can make it look really nice in myself. But all in all I love to watch people's different makeup style.

This style was created to imitate when Japanese girls imagined as the California girl look. Really deep tans, blonde or bright colored hair, and fancy clothes. But just like in any style, some people like to branch off and make their own version of it. So quit trying to make this into what you see as a racist joke. it's not in the least bit
thats one history pointer, the other most commonly recognized reason was to rebel against Japanese beauty standards on an innocent girl with white skin, sleek long black hair and natural makeup. taking no inspiration aside from a few Japanese pop singers and well.. beauty standards

But to make a point, these girls don't do it for other's to think they;re beautiful. as above commenter mentioned, it's to rebel against Japanese beauty standards because the ideal girl has pale skin. It has nothing to do racism and also with Californian girl look. I know BBC program in past somehow reported it as influence of "Bay watch" which weren't even aired in Japan. It was started by imitating the pop-singer Amuro Namie who had tanned skin and used white/glittery eye-liners and colorful hair. The magazine EGG was focusing on this look.

@@starman1704 this is for the skin look tanned, as the girl was pale, they used a darker one. it's the same for the goths using pale foundation or white (I'm a gorh :)

I can see how this is their style and their kind of thing but the makeup just seems so poorly executed and not properly done. The eye look especially seems particularly sloppy.

+Teti Well, that's one of the main features of kuro-gyaru. For some gals, the droppier the eyes, the better. I don't see how that makes the look poorly executed. She clearly knows what she's doing.

I cannot tell you how happy it makes me knowing Ganguro is still alive in Japan. Just like any other subculture, yes it has changed over the years. However, you can obviously tell that these women have a passion for what they love. They don't care if you won't love it, they didn't agree to make this video in hopes you would, so stop putting them down. It's to show the world that Ganguro is still alive and thriving, and how they are proud supporters of what they love.
please make a video where they go out with the makeup and maybe go to a party or event with the makeup!

I think so too. I know its not an odd thing for people to dress gyaru in japan. But it would be a unique first time experience for kat and mr.producer. i think it would be a good video if they went to a gyaru event or party with the full makeup, and got to experience what its like.

If they did a video of their experience going out as gyaru for the first time and whats it like going to gyaru parties or events it would be interesting. I feel like i have to keep repeating what i'm saying because people arent getting my point. :(

Is the droopy eyes an important part of the gyaru style? When I first learned of the style it looked like they just focused on getting very large eyes vs. very droopy eyes, is it a new thing? :o
+WalkingTrajety All Black Diamond members seem to make their eyes droopy, because droopy if generally more kawaii than slanted.

+WalkingTrajety It depends on the look you are going for, but for more extreme styles it is kind of neccesary. The general rule for gyaru makeup is to do "mori eyes", which make them look big, and making a droopy eyeshape is one way of doing so. Since black diamond's style is very tsuyome mixed with olsschool manba influences, they do the typical "manba" eyeshapes, which are very extreme. But especially if you are a gaijin gyaru, making the extreme droopy look is important, as it is one of the few ways to make your gyarumake look GYARU instead of just very extreme western make

Watching these videos really do make me feel better about how I do my makeup. Not in a "wow their makeup is terrible" way, but I do enjoy how my makeup looks with the sponge applicators/etc. I don't know, just makes me feel like a little girl, which I enjoy. ^_^
I really love Japanese style and such, I would love to be able to do some stuff with the confidence they have, but I don't, sadly.

+Tammy :D If you don't like it for yourself that usually means you have some sort of prejudice without you consciously knowing. You may not have anything against people of color but the fact that you wouldn't want that skin tone is because you think pale skin is more beautiful, it's a "preference" you say but it may be that you've been convinced that pale skin is better.
