Seen them live years ago. If you would have told me that they would be on tiny desk I wouldn’t have believed it. Easily one of my favorite tiny desk yet.
I saw GWAR in 1995 when I was 17 and Oderus and Slymenstra were in the band. They beheaded the reanimated corpse of Jacques Cousteau, Slymenstra breathed fire, Oderus did battle with Techno-Destructo, and I was addicted to metal forever.
Lucky. I've only been able to go twice. I was never in fear of my life, even though I threw myself into the Pit. I may only be a 5' 3" shrimp of a guy (girl at the time--I'm trans), I'm tough as nails. In fact, it was doing this that I ended up meeting a 6'3" dude who became my boyfriend for a couple of years. He was impressed at how I was right in the middle of people twice my size who were throwing hands. "You're f*cking insane! I LOVE IT!" LOL
Nearly in tears listening to “Phantom Limb” what a beautiful set and a beautiful tribute to Oderus Urungus, the OG, The Intergalactic Humanoid Barbarian. This is the Tiny Desk Concert that not only the people, but all species, have been calling out for for years.
I had some weird Mandela effect memory of them doing this with Oderus, I might have been thinking of their appearances on The AV Club. I'm glad they finally did show up here even if it was after we lost Oderus.
His funeral in 2014 was the last time I heard the road behind. They played it as a tribute to him when they did their set at the funeral show. Can't listen to it anymore.
even if you're not a fan you should check them out live. it's an experience and will be the best concert you've ever went to according to friends i took to one of their concerts
Yooo.... Wish more folks in my life knew just how epic these past few weeks have been in regards to Tiny Desk quite possibly putting on two of the most epic, important and intimate performances of the year... 😭 I seriously don't see them topping those two shows. ❤ Hands down, whichever individuals made the moves to make those two appearances happen need to be head of staff for the next decade or at least reimbursed for solidifying these two moments in culture.
All their albums are themed and vary quite a bit, mostly metal and hard rock threads through them all. If you go through their discography you’ll definitely appreciate how expansive they are and how their musical styles and production changed over the years.
GWAR isn't so much a joke as a mirror in parody form of life in general. Some songs are silly and mean nothing, some spotlight political people and religious institutions. No tracks are ever truly in the background, all are good.
Saw the 2005 version of Gwar at Sounds of the Undergeound at the Tweeter Center in Chicago in 100 degree heat... Took an hour for the stage to get set for a 40 minute set... we were all just so hot and exhausted after hours of a festival but 99% of the crowd was so happy and impressed by their performance we forgot all about the heat. This is so incredibly tame for them I'm impressed once more... Thanks NPR!!! I donate on non summer pledge months cuz I don't want to encourage you to do more of them
I come to Tiny Desk for two reasons: for the audio mix, which is usually superb, and the occasional surprise of "this is not what i expect of NPR" If, after this success, Gwar does notend their talents to future fundraisers, Oderous' ghost will haunt the NPR offices until appeased.
This band is what comes to mind for the term, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” I never listened to them assuming it would have been insane heavy metal. This was not what I expected, but absolutely great!

This is amazing. To see NPR turn to GWAR for fundraiser support warms my heart. I love that they kicked off the National Public Radio broadcast with a 1997 classic about barnyard bestiality and threw in some child abduction material along with it. Glad to see NPR finally elevating their taste in music!!!

They founded the band 66 million years ago when GWAR slayed the dinosaurs to use them as bass strings across the grand canyon. So I'm optimistic they'll do a couple of hundred years more.
I very much appreciate that him "wrecking the joint" equates to crumpling up a single piece of paper that may have just been their setlist. Delightfully on brand.
@@FizzyCapedon't gatekeep. Let people enjoy. That's why Gwar is here. I for one am very happy to hear someone is just now finding out about Gwar in 2023. That's awesome
Heartwarming. I went to five million shows and hung with these perfect gentlemen for years. I miss Dave/Oderus and haven't been able to bring myself to attend in recent years, but glad they have carried on. GWAR (like me) was born under Reagan and their job in life has always been free speech warriors giving a big middle finger to the religious right and cultural conservatives. They probably owe their livelihoods in part to the 50% of the fandom not in on the jokes, but they have always been a great fit for npr.
Well, this certainly blew away the Monday blahs!😅 Recognized the band, but had never heard their music. Always figured it'd be more Motorhead than Kiss (but hilarious). This is AWESOME! Thank you, Tiny Desk. Rock on, Gwar!!!💥☠️🧟
The best and most unexpected NPR Tiny Desk concert ever! Although they didn't bring their blood canons, Gwar is still just about the most fun you can have standing upright.

In 2012 I was sprayed with blood from the neck of a decapitated Snooki from Jersey Shore at a Gwar show, it changed my life
If you’ve ever been to a GWAR show you know this is both only a small sample of what they are capable off and the cleanest show they’ve ever done. 😂😂
Nda upset they didn't trash the place
A slow morning for GWAR….. nobody was sodomized and/or murdered….. weird.
Cleaniest hygienically and spiritually hahaha

love the drum mix, that kick is pristine
Glad someone said it. It’s amazing.
Yes indeed
Tiny Desk sound mix is always a work of art - masters of their craft!
i imagine this band going for like a hundred years.....various characters and music style over the years
It would be the best way to memorialize their fallen members.
I believe Brockie had this same sentiment. Though it could go on forever since they're more than a band, but a complete act.
They founded the band 66 million years ago when GWAR slayed the dinosaurs to use them as bass strings across the grand canyon. So I'm optimistic they'll do a couple of hundred years more.
I have never heard of this band before. I'm 71, Idk, where have I been?😮😂
They're in a rather unique niche of the heavy metal world
I first heard of them from the MTV show Viva La Bam. They actually had a lot of sick music on that show.
Wow, this brings back memories. I saw them almost 25 years go with Pig Face in Eybor City, FL. What a great show.
Never heard of this band, clicked out of sheer curiosity and bewilderment at the costumes. Can’t say I was disappointed
I very much appreciate that him "wrecking the joint" equates to crumpling up a single piece of paper that may have just been their setlist. Delightfully on brand.
Dave's humor still lingers lol. Mike is wonderful.
@@DangOlJesse absolutely!
That was great!
1 step closer to a death grips tiny desk
I clicked because I said “it can’t be Gwar, Gwar!” OMG THIS IS BRILLIANT 😂😂😂😂
it's 5:11 AM and I am banging to GWAR on Tiny Desk? What other wonders are in store for me today!?!
Never in my life would I imagine I would be listening to GWAR on Tiny Desk and smiling from ear to ear & loving it 😂
I can’t believe GWAR!!! Is on Tiny Desk!!! I’ve listened to GWAR since I was a kid! I’m 44 years old now. What a surprise!!!!
R.I.P. Oderous. This is still great though, especially Phantom Limb❤
Thought I was in a fever dream for a moment 😂
Never heard of GWAR before , they are amazing fresh , fun , rocking and these costumes are bizzare and amaaazing !!! Big respect for this episode !
Fresh? They’ve been around since the 80s lol
@@FizzyCapedon't gatekeep. Let people enjoy. That's why Gwar is here. I for one am very happy to hear someone is just now finding out about Gwar in 2023. That's awesome
@@killface69 it’s not gatekeeping to say they’re not fresh lol
Very pleasantly surprised to see Gwar on Tiny Desk, props to you guys for always having such a diverse set of artists on here!
As a Muslim are you accusing me of being a cultural conservative?
I think you mean neoliberals. Those lot are the biggest threat to free speech
A leftist with a cat picture.....
@@richarddresden6869 Hardly. There's plenty of Muslim folks who are on the Left & Progressive. Relax, you're cool.
@@VTRIGGERS And I've known lots of folks on the right who love their kitties too. Your point? People love their pets? What?
Take away all the costumes and just realize these guys can really wail. The tiny desk concert i didnt know i wanted until now. ❤❤
Def the coolest drum set ever
I AM 1000% HERE FOR GWAR TINY DESK?!?! Thank you whom ever at NPR music made this happen :)
In all my days, I never thought I'd come to see this band perform on NPR 🤣
I never thought NPR and GWAR would ever be in the same sentence. All hail Tiny Desk! \m/
Low brow aside. There's a lot of talent here. Every person is very well versed in their instruments
This is great, but GWAR with Taylor Swift would be next-level. haha.
Everyone on the planet should see GWAR twice... first time to take in the visuals and the second time to dance out to the music.
Seeing them in August for my 9th time. Finally doing a meet and greet with them for the first time.
theatrics aside, they're actually pretty good musicians
Anyone who says GWAR can't play has never listened to them honestly. They're fantastic musicians and I'm glad people can recognize that 👊
That's commitment to the look... Was smiling throughout.
I got to say Phantom Limb is probably one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard
