Gwar meets Joan Rivers 1990, best copy from master

- We see a couple of poor quality uploads of this 1990 TV show featuring Joan Rivers interviewing Gwar, so here's a much cleaner dupe from a commercial master. The BetaGems channel also has "July 1989 music news: Batman guitar, Gwar interview," "Whoopie Goldberg on Joan Rivers Late Show 2-20-87," "Elton John jams with Cher and Joan Rivers 10-12-86," "The Bangles October 1986 late night TV performance" (including an interview with Rivers), and "1992 TV Hosts Buffalo Bob, Bozo, Soupy Sales" (a complete Joan Rivers daytime episode).
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on RUclips or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.
I love how despite her reluctance, Joan Rivers makes an honest-to-goodness interview out of it, and GWAR were such fantastic sports about the whole thing. Kudos to Joan as well, when she realizes that GWAR is a fellow comedy act and starts giving them the respect that they deserve.
She reaches the point where she realizes it's a joke pretty quickly then turns the whole thing into vaudeville.
She was a fantastic sport? They are about of idiots on a normal person show! Me thinks they had no choice in the manner!
The “Honest-To-Goodness” interviews by Joan Rivres have no bounds…
🎉
She was a good interviewer
Took my brother to a gwar concert. He told me it was the first time in his life he literally didn't know what was going on at all.
lol
They have one of the best live shows ever I never been too one but my friends have and they had a blast
Try going to a GWAR show on LSD like I did.
My brother came home from a gwar show with “blood” all over him from the front row lol
Seen Gwar a couple days ago fucking awesome as always✌
Joan and Oderus haven't died. They've just been recalled to the stars
Naw they dead
They're with me now...
Nah, they killed Joan for calling out Obama's wife as a trans woman
I like how Joan slowly starts to accept that this won't be a normal interview
Yeah you can't invite people in character and then demand they act normal.
Especially a group that is renowned for not breaking character!

@@FlyhmTheBones Gwar meets Joan Rivers 1990, best copy from master 2323pm 31.7.22 who joan rivers or someone else...? i mean; joan rivers was renowned for being somewhat blue and outre herself so i doubt gwar posed much of a problem - especially with gwar's amazing post punk sensibilities ie: it adhered to a certain mind set which, sadly, has become the thing and the main current of the day along with modern primitivism and the like.. so piercings are out tats are out and gwar should be middle management by now or even top brass Md goes on golfing holiday material... touche. it's the worst feeling in the world when they get it - the ones you didnt want - to get it. i suppose you could pretend not to get it and act the douche or the buffoon but that's ten times worse... as would the re-hash of gwar.
the comedic timing on "Cleveland" is hysterical. RIP dave
I let out a squealy giggle noise that I didn't even know my mouth could make. My cats ran off in every direction.
Joan Rivers: “How far you are guys willing to go?”
GWAR: “Cleveland!” 🤣
They're gonna make it to the rock and roll hall of fame is why they're stopping there
Home of the STEAMER!
We watched the video too but thanks though
As an Ohioan, I can confirm that Cleveland is farther than most of us are willing to go. I can think of no redeeming qualities.
"How far are you guy's going to go?

Hahha right??
It’s incredible to see how reserved people were at first, and how they slowly start winning the crowd over. Once he said “Thank you Beefcake for being here for me right now” they had the entire crowd around their finger.
I try to tell people how wholesome Gwar is but no one believes me :(
RIP Dave and Joan. They weren't afraid to go against the grain and they spent their time here working to make the lives of others more enjoyable.
“I’m going to turn it into a lamp” was the best response I could have ever imagined
Just saw GWAR's recent performance(my first time seeing them) on Tiny Desk by NPR and now I'm going down the rabbithole and loving it. Also RIP Joan, you always were a real one.
That was a good performance. They're just having fun.
Wait they replaced the singer?
@@danziglopez9166 They kind of had to....he passed away.
She outted "Big Mike". Respect #Legend
same... I've always been aware of them and even have a couple friends who are fans. Just never listened to them or paid much attention.
Gotta say, they're growing on me
Funniest part is when Gwar come out to the strains of the cheesy, "talk show" music. Every guest comes out to it but the sight of them coming out to it is hilarious.
that part is surreal
This was my first exposure to the GWAR. 25 years later I'm still a fan. RIP Oderous
Best band I have ever seen live, so funny, so entertaining, their performance was unique and absolute gold
I saw them live every year in my hometown of Memphis for like...10 yrs?
So much fun! Rip DAve! 😔
What about Flattus Maximus?
And RIP Joan.
GWAR
Joan instantly picked up on Dave’s sense of humor!
Met Beefcake (the original one) at an art gallery in SF once. Super nice guy.
So great to hear Oderous bantering, Gwar isn't the same without him.
RIP Dave Brockie.
the og beef cake is Mike Bishop...he is now Blothar and took over for Oderus.
Brockie was hilarious. Every Oderus interview was funny. R.I.P Dave/Oderus.
It didn't take long for Joan to catch on, funny recognizes funny.
Alot of respect to joan for how she handled it and taking it for what it was, not for what it was perceived to be
Yeah, she was revolted and played along at the same time. She was really a great sport.
Joan Rivers was down as a clown. She was as cool as Oderus.... almost.
Joan was comedian. She loves this.
Joan was a special woman. Best fouled mouthed female comedian ever
Joan rivers was a fucking saint
god bless Joan Rivers she was fearless.
And to think she was wacked over calling somone gay....
@@simonmacconmidhe9489 Yeah, because the definition of "fearless" is being a fucking superhero lol
Absolutely right she was fearless. She knew Michelle Obama was born a man and not afraid to say so. She was definitely fearless.
@@simonmacconmidhe9489 considering this was after her husband killed himself and the networks black listed her, she could've easily done a safe stupid commercial talk show but she used it to give Gwar a genuine interview... not saying people aren't more fearless but that's a pretty risky move for someone trying to earn their living again.
@@simonmacconmidhe9489 You have a very rigid definition of “fearless” also that’s not what it means.
Joan Rivers was a class act, well done. Rest easy Joan.
Big Mike wanted her gone Big Mike gets what he wants.
If people didn't understand that Gwar really doesn't take themselves seriously and that it's very humorous, they will certainly understand it after this interview!
Oderus genuinely laughing at the Sally Jesse joke was great
Absolutely brilliant how they interacted with each other.
@@BTMegadeth people like us still exist, but they don't allow us in the viewfinder of the media as easily...you gotta dig.
I never saw Hendrix, but I saw GWAR!

She had more rubber and plastic on her face than they did.
harsh...
They’re still great but nothing beats that booming Dave Brockie voice
I love just how open she was and willing to respect people she didnt undestand way back in 1990.
For a long while, I thought Joan Rivers was a horrible person. Only over the last few years, sadly, I’ve realised she was a great comedian, and unwavering in her commitment to the bit. And generally, she was a pretty decent person.
And she died after telling everyone that Michelle Obama is a man.
She's the greatest female comic IMO
She was hilarious
Compared to what has walked the planet since her, she seems like a veritable saint!
Too bad politics make you hate good people.
Fortunate enough to see GWAR and Death Piggy back in the 80's ... recall cops stopping show on VCU campus .. Brockie was artistic genius grounded enough to surround himself with like talented artists .. sadly missed.
I appreciate Joan and miss her dearly after almost ten years since her death. She’s not entirely sure what’s going on but she’s here, she’s doing her job, and she’s keeping her sense of humor. Many people don’t like her but it’s interviews like this that Jimmy Kimmel or David Letterman would have jabbed at instead of trying to at least understand. RIP Joan. Rock on GWAR 🤘

I’m confused on this. What does he have to do with GWAR? I look up his name and no link to them. What am I missing? I don’t mind GWAR, wasn’t into them when I was young. They’re interesting and this interview is great. I just can’t piece this together.
@@ICLight412 Probably on the same beta tape
We are only supplying a consumer NEED!! LOL!!!
They slayed this interview. Joan was a good sport.
"Cleveland" lol Brockie was a genius.
I love the part where Joan asks them if there's any sexual themes in their music and GWAR are there to promote an album with the song "Sexecutioner."
I was lucky enough to see Gwar at the Masquerade in the early 90s. Still the best show I've ever seen.
July 2022 I’m 56 and wasn’t accepting of gwar when they first came out as a band it wasn’t until the 2000’s that I revisited gwar and couldn’t believe missed out on them insanely talented musicians . I listened to them for about 6 months straight. But in this interview you can tell totally didn’t know what to expect and after she got the jist of them she was totally on board. ♥️
Well, go see them in concert! GWAR is touring right now (10/22). A week ago a friend told me I take things too seriously, so I decided to go see GWAR tonight in Dallas! 10/14/2022. Can’t wait!
I listened to Gwar back in the early 90's but got bored pretty quick! They are about as funny as your mother's funeral!
@@inconnu4961 Yes, most of their music isn't exciting, their comedy isn't high-caliber, the costumes are overboard, but something aligned in the stars in October. I heard a few songs that were good, they were playing that night, my friend told me I'm too serious, so I went to the show. Jumped around in the tame pit (good pit for a 55 y/o), got soaked with "blood" and "semen," watched a biography about GWAR's intelligence, creativity, work ethic & saving a town's historical building & revitalizing their art's district, and REALLY had a good time. It's a once-in-a-while kind of thing.
Ok well I'm glad you figured out a way to make this about yourself.

Joan was awesome!! For this interview alone plus just being her
Joan was such a champ. I remember Gwar and the uproar over their live shows. Thank god the Christians are not pushing their morality any more. Wait a minute………
The satirical social commentary is actually brilliant. "Let them join the army or something. There's plenty of outlets for that." 🤣
Yeah we watched it too
These guys really remind me of a cross between KISS, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the World West Wrestling Foundation, and the Simpsons.
Federation, not Foundation!
Other than that......a lot of fun being had here.

Fun interview. I remember Odorous having some really good interviews with Greg Gutfield. Regret never seeing GWAR live.
i remember when this aired back in the late 80s early 90s and became a fan since, and it was great to know, im 45 minutes from richmond va. RIP Brockie man, the pure talent this man had.
Come for Gwar, but stay for Ken Baumgartner's electrifying metal vocal performance
😂
Joan was always at her funniest when she did not mean to be. Absolutely perfect for this. Well done interview of a hard target. I did not know Joan was cool with GWAR.
THAT was huuuuge!!
Rumors were that Joan and Dave truly did enjoy each others company...Joan is even been rumored to have puppeteered World Maggot on Phallus in Wonderland....
Didn’t realize just how politically progressive the whole philosophy/idea of Gwar was.
I had the great pleasure of hanging out with the band after a show back in the 90s. Dave just kept talking about Lord of the Rings all night. Whenever someone changed the subject he always found a way to bring it back. Absolutely hilarious guy, and the whole band were such nice (surprisingly normal) dudes. They signed my GWAR comic.
Beefcake sounds like he is from the sprawling metropolitan area of Brooklyn on the planet cholesterol
And she thought they were joking. Absolute classic.
To think all these years later. Joan's the one that let us know stevie isn't blind and Michelle Obama is actually a man. Good times.
I had the pleasure of seeing GWAR play a show live right before Dave Brockie died 🥺 was such a brutal show. They played with Cradle of Filth, went home with all types of god knows what on me 😂 RIP Dave thank you for the kick ass show
I've seen them at least 19 times, most before Dave's death. Saw them in Boise a few weeks before he passed, and you could really tell something was off that night compared to previous shows. He seemed kind of lethargic on stage, and not really into the whole act. I just figured he was having an off night. Then a few weeks later he was dead of a heroin OD, and I figured he must have been high on stage that night. A true showman was lost. Dave used to say that GWAR is the band that can never die, because new musicians can just take over the characters, but that driving influence being lost definitely hurt. The shows have never been quite the same, and it took several years to recover, but they've finally got the stage show down to a really good level again under Mike Bishop, but the music still hasn't totally recovered. I'm going to see them again in a few weeks.
Their commitment solidifies her commitment.
Beautiful Interview.
I love the world wrestling foundation

Oderus returned to his home planet in 2014.. But also, just generally, there's been a lot of people in the band over the years.
I think it's to signify that the characters are in more of a thoughtful and intelligent mood, as opposed to their appearance on Hot Seat where it's like all barbarian
This is surprisingly a very wholesome. Joan is a nice lady this was awesome, back when musicians had personality and were actually people behind the costume.
04:12 Omg that laugh! RIP Oderus
There are some deranged + disturbingly mutated looking creatures in the universe, but I like that Gwar accepts her anyway
They deserved to be in the R n R Hall of fame
The Rock n Roll hall of fame doesn't deserve GWAR.

I always wind up coming back to this video from time to time. I will never fully get over the loss of Dave Brockie. GWAR got me through some of the toughest times of my life honestly and every time I saw an interview with them I just grew more fond of them. They are and Dave was such a genuine soul and there will never be another like him. Cory Smoot was also a great loss. Anyone who doesn't understand GWAR I show them this interview so they can fully grasp the entertainment value and the wholesomeness of these awesome people. Also, Joan Rivers had my respect for the way she treated them and for bringing a more positive light to their antics which made them a little less misunderstood.

I saw them the last time they played in Charlotte, NC in the fall of 1990. I had just turned 17 and my grandfather was on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD at that time. He did a lot of the security details for concerts. I think that was at the 4808 Club so I got to see them for free. Not sure if they have been back since.
