Man its crazy bc I remember back when i was in elementary and middle school, it used to always be a big deal, and my fav part was the cyphers. Then halfway thru my HS years, idk what happened. It's like i stopped seeing promo for it and just completely forgot about it. Fwiw, i also stopped watching TV fr besides sports around that time, so that could have contributed to me not keeping up with it, but idk man its a shame the way it's fallen off and idk how they could fix it bc it seems like a lot of ppl and artists have moved on from it.
It's also wild how BET awards essentially stopped meaning something to a lot black artists. I remember all the big names pulling up to perform, accept awards, or just be there to watch the others. Then for whatever reason the big names stopped caring and seemed to only focus about the Grammy's and other award shows that usually don't give our culture the respect it deserves (until lately I guess I don't watch those shows either but have heard more of us winning there so 🤷🏾♂️).
I agree with you, I was in High school around 2011 and that was one of the best cypher’s. After 2012-2013(Rich Homie Quan messing up Biggie lyrics), there was no promo. When BET was sold in 06, they have treated the culture and genre like trash for the most part and that plays a part in why big artist don’t respect it.
@@kilobeatsog I think this has more to do with it than anything. The artists themselves started not to care. Beyonce, Jay Z, Kanye, and Kendrick feel so much bigger than the BET Awards and the culture as a whole, and everybody started to follow suit.

The money simply isn’t there anymore for hip hop. That’s what Vince was talking about months ago and people killed him for timing. These companies are cutting waste and shit from the old model. The big 3 releasing the way the are, artist selling back catalog, the emergence of Ai are all symptoms. Media is shifting and we’re entering a recession possibly. So per usual we suffer the most.
One thing I didn’t hear yall talk about was the fact that social media is where kids go for info and entertainment. My son doesn’t even watch “TV” as we know it. And rappers can do their own Cyphers like the AMP Freshman Cypher for instance. I can imagine there is just too much competition for the youths attention. That and you got to advertise that it’s even happening.
I think all award shows have gone down… the only one relevant is the Grammys (even though they have gone down too) but I think because Rappers and Artist still talk about and want a Grammy. Kanye pissed on his old ones but he submitted a nom for V1 and Carnival. Kendrick is in it too. Big artist still take it serious (some what)
No. Across genres, award shoes don't matter as much as they used to. No award is getting an artist paid any more than they would've been otherwise. The model has shifted.
We need a new hip hop awards show. have it on Netflix, Prime, RUclips, Tok or one of those apps. Hip hop is big on social media more than Network TV. make the show more interactive on social Media..
Yeah BET Awards is done. Sad but it is a product of the times. TV in general is dying. Cyphers don't work when popular rappers can't rap, see what happened to the XXL freestyles and cyphers. And BET doesn't have the cultural pull or financial status too make it a big event anymore.

What made the Hip Hop Awards great in the past is that it showcased the best of the underground & mainstream. All the mainstream artists would be doing live performances while the battle rappers, underground, OGs, and even international rappers would be doing the cyphers. It was a way to please both crowds. I think the decline of TV & cable networks along with the deprioritization of lyricism specifically in mainstream Hip Hop has lead to this.
I think it’s different forms of media pushing hip hop now and imo it’s streaming on platforms like twitch and kick and on the radar freestyles and twitter.
Well the big artists haven’t been showing up for more than a decade. Travis Scott was only there cause he winning the icon award. Kendrick winning all those awards and not showing up means something. A quick reflection on Award Show culture and Hip-Hop. I have seen the degeneration of hip-hop culture through the years because hip-hop artists started being eliminated in favour of the desire to pander. One can obviously see the lack of value in the commercial excerpt of Hip-Hop. The fashion is becoming absurd whilst we allow ourselves to be distracted by artist "antics, controversy and drama." Lamar being a stand-out is an absurd reality in which we can exist on the "commercial" context. We're so interested in seeing nearly naked "rappers" shake it all on stage and basically watch weak rappers deliver horrible performances.
