Remote air compressor video - • Ⓕ Air Compressor Stati...
I installed a garbage disposal air actuated switch in my assembly table to act as a remote shopvac switch for my random orbit sander. I prefer to use air sanders so I was looking for a way to turn on my vacuum since the automatic switch on the dust extractor relies on sensing amperage draw on tool start-up. If your vacuum doesn't have this feature and you want to use electric sanders, I know places like Rockler have them as well as this link - amzn.to/2VE6Oq3 - I have been looking forward to this switch for a while now, so that I don't have to play my own version of shop Twister whenever I want to use my vacuum. It was quick and easy to install and I am looking forward to using it when I do my sanding on my table saw outfeed table / finishing station / dust collection cart / workbench. Oh and.... Very impressed with the extension proficiency, but even more impressed with the Robertson love.
haha for sure
A few years ago I built a portable workstation for trim work, comparable to your theater cart. It holds the chop saw, a vacuum for dust collection, and a compressor. When working with a partner, the compressor would frequently cycle while the chopsaw and vacuum were running, killing the breaker. To solve the problem I bought a similar airswitch, but with two outlets. It's made to switch between a garbage disposal and an insta-hot. The push button kills power to the compress and powers the vacuum for dust collection and clean up, then restores power to the compressor.
Wow !! It's NICK FERRY !! It's a Nick Ferry video !! OMG OMG OMG !! lol
Thanks for the video, Nick !! In my small shop I have my shop vac hooked up to a remote switch. All I have to do is connect the shop vac to whatever tool I'm using and hit the remote. I don't have to move the vac, just the hose and carry the remote with me to the tool. Works for me... Thanks again for the video, Nick !
OMG!! Lol - the other option I weighed was similar - it’s always something that needs tweaking
Every shop and every person has different needs and preferences. What works in one shop doesn't necessarily work in another -- and vicey versey.... :)
Thanks Nick, I had not heard of this item and I will be ordering at least one very soon. I'm building scroll saw stands that will each have their own dedicated vacuum system and be completely portable. I found a really neat cyclone out of aluminum that will fit in a coffee can and run off of the little MetroVac500. Each system will tuck up under the saw and go whereever I want to use the saws. Out in my driveway or in the shop. Will be cool to have this little air switch to operate them with. Thanks again.
Very cool idea! I have a few scroll sawyer friends - if you snag a picture of it when it’s done make sure to tag me in so I can see it
@@NickFerry Will do Nick. Thanks for your stuff.
"I'll clean that up next time I'm back there"
And the bench is thinking "Yeah, that's what he said the last time, and the time before that, and the time before that..." 🤣😂🤣😂😂
Neat switch. You can touch it with wet hands and not get a shock too. Cool bit extension extension extension extension trick.
That’s some hot switch talk, right there.
Well you know what they say about guys taking about switches online…
Cool use for a disposal switch. Never thunk about the possibility. You DO need a few more cordless bit extensions, though.
I keep telling the boss that but I’m stuck in red tape at this point
To magnetize any driver tip or screw driver for that matter, just rub a strong magnet on the tip. It's only temporary but will last for a while.
true - I find this way magnetizes them slightly less
Great idea! I have installed them for garburators, but never would thought of using it in the shop!!
PIZZA!!!!!
ZA!
Loving the Robertson love....
Wish more did
@@NickFerry All have their advantages but because it can be wedged it's the best all-round for me...Cheers!
I bought a foot actuated switch, from Leavalley it’s pretty cool. It’s great for routing. Cheers
anything to get the hands free
I have become a big fan of remote controlled outlets. My favorite comes with three different receptacles, that plug into three different outlets in the shop but are controlled from one remote that has three buttons, 1, 2 and 3, each of which controls one receptacle. I have three different shop vacs in my shop, one dedicated to my chop saw, one to the CNC, and the third that switches between the planer, drill press and router table. Just push the appropriate remote button and we're sucking it up.
Nice solution! A power strip of sorts could be made with a switched outlet but I’m not sure I’ve seen one available commercially. But I had no clue an air actuated switch existed either. 🤔
yeah, I was going for it to be switched in the back so the wires could be out of the way - I didn't do a great job explaining that in the video
Long story short... I call Chicanery!!!
THIS is the Nick we all know and love!!
Practical substance salted with Hilarity!
thanks brother!
So this switch is triggered by moving air in the hose, interesting. I thought you were going to connect a pressure switch from the feed hose to your pneumatic sander to trigger the vac. Nice upgrade to your dust collection. I purchased a foot operated switch for the drill press. Helps tremendously when both hands or usually holding something at the drill press. These simple improvements improve productivity.
They really do help - I thought about a pressure switch NO ambient, closed under pressure but that would have required some dinkering - so when I found this plug and play option my laziness won over
Love the multi extension ceiling bit 👊🏼🤣
That’s cool. I have a foot switch that I plug my shop vac into so I can run it while it’s hooked up to whatever power tool I’m using.
I just looked at that remote air switch today, and that one you have I don't believe it isn't rated for power tools. But, the same company makes another remote-controlled outlet without the air switch that specifically says that it is rated for a dust collector and tools. And it retails between $19.99---$30.00.
I wasn't all that concerned considering it is designed to run similar sized motors
@@NickFerry Just repeating what it says in listing on Amazon. I'm glad for you that it works with your DC. I though garbage disposals were about a 1/3 hp and my vac is 5 hp. That is why I chose the other outlet.
I use a wifi PowerPoint it has a remote which comes in a 3 PowerPoint kit. One remote does 3 different tools. I have #1 to lights #2 to vacuum and #3 to air compressor
For about $15 I bought a wireless switch with a key fob I just clip to my belt. It works anywhere in the shop.
I’ve had so-so luck with those especially the most common 15 amp models burning out - so I figured I’d give it a new approach
@@NickFerry Makes sense. The one you used is for motors, which have a large surge of current on start-up, the cheapo Walmart thing I got was probably intended for Christmas lights. I enjoy your channel, thanks.
Love this. I immediately thought about multiple pressure switches around the shop using aquarium air hose and a manifold. (Goes straight to amazon)
Cool idea! Thanks!
I imagine you could buy more buttons and tee them into the line for additional locations. Up until the hose volume was too much to build the needed pressure.
When I saw your ceiling screw loosening long reach extended extentions I spit a little iced tea on my keyboard. Keep em coming.
I should have tested how long of tubing I could have gotten away with - now clean up that iced tea
That's some next level stuff there Nick.
Thanks Nick..good info..obtw..my shop looks like yours. Most of the time..
Ok Nick, follow me here. If I were as skilled as you with the operation of that many bit holders and extensions..........why wouldn't I use them to reach the vac switch. Your killin me smalls! Keep em comming. Thanx Nick. Dean Kramasz
So other than being a little more work, why not just install a switched receptacle?
Cool little product though. I had no idea those existed.
That’s what I did in this video where I need to go further - ruclips.net/video/9sJLQc7uwI4/видео.html - switched power and air pressure
These are the same switches on spas near pools. Keeps the electricity from the patrons
I haven't seen you in a while, you got the fleccas talks look to you 😉 nice video brother
Joshua Yingling our jacuzzi has the air button switch and so does our sink garbage disposal.
I can’t see an immediate application for myself but certainly something to keep in mind as I am sure one exists.
Extensions FTW!!!
Great idea. I assume it could be some distance away.
Really cool Nick, awesome stuff! 😃👍🏻👊🏻 ...... Definitely topped my record for most bit extensions! 😁👌🏻
thanks Fred - I have an extensive extension collection
wow, 1st =) love your videos nick! glad you are back
thanks - feels good to be back to showing what's been going on in the shop
@@NickFerry great, let me know when you finally get around to cleaning it!!!
Why not just wire a normal switch? It would be good if it came on automatically with the pneumatic sander?
that's what I did in my compressor video - just different ways of solving the issue
I don't see the purpose of this over a normal electrical switch. What is the benefit of the air actuation?
Like I did here? ruclips.net/video/9sJLQc7uwI4/видео.html
This is made to allow a switch in a countertop where an electrical switch is not allowed by code. The benefit of this in Nick’s application is that no electrical wires need to be run and it’s just dam cool! Also I’m a huge fan of the Nick Ferry latter replacement!!!!
But he plugs a cable in right next to it on the corner of the bench. It is extra cost / design for the sake of it.
I just tried searching, i was thinking of a modular system where you can mix and match, for instance switch, socket, switch, socket etc, plus the usb, but not finding anything
The other idea was 'rack mount' socket strips.
Just seems the american standard is not to have switched sockets.
In the UK we have 4&6 way extension socket strips with individual switches, though they would be surface mount.
Thanks Nick. I learned something. Didn't know that existed. JImE
Isn't this just like using a regular remote electric switch? I have installed such a unit to my central dust collector, just had to find one that could handle 2000W for the spike in current at startup (everything here is 230V),,, i have also several remotes switches physically mounted close to my machines and they are all paired with the one receiver
The REMOTE AIR SWITCH doesn't work. Said it can't find that page.
thanks for the heads up - just fixed it - hope that link doesn't break too

Switched surface mount power panel, 4 outlets, 2 USB - www.amazon.com/dp/B07XXNHDW6
those are the ones I had issues with - I wanted to plug the vacuum in the back or even a ways away and not to have to plug it into the front of the power strip
Not sure if woodworker or comedian ... or both!
Most of my woodworking looks funny if that helps
@@NickFerry Hey, if it looks straight...
The air switch is an interesting solution but at $22 why not just install Box, plate and light switch?
What happened?
It was broke when I got here so I cannot be blamed
Ferry ProTip: get rid of your useless step ladders.
lol ...or just put it where you can't find it. (that comment resembles me...) lol
Hello, how are you......do you have beer..... well whiskey would be preferable..... actually Jack Daniel's if I was honest.... precurious ..... fancy.......eeeeewwwww snug..... nice tip for a screw........quality programming....... a huh..... yeah, yep , neat , yep !!!!! Nick,um did I post bail once????
Thanks Gib - haha - I believe you may have
I don't understand this system. A wireless remote switch can be purchase for about $12 and takes less than a minute to setup. Why go to all this trouble when there is such a simple solution?
I haven’t had luck with those over the years - over amped motor starts seem to make them shit the bed prematurely
@@NickFerry now there are several on the market that can handle 15amps. I have one on a small dust collector that has worked fine for over five years.
@@nperson shoot me a link to one that’s rated for over 15 amps at the $12 price point and I’ll take a look - thank much
@@NickFerry not in the shop now but I recall the brand is Woods and I got it on Amazon
