Making Photo Paper: Inside the Adox Coating Machine

- After 10 years of research, testing, acquiring a coating machine in Marly, Switzerland and bringing it back to life, the Adox team has produced the first batch of the remastered Polywarmtone paper.
With Adox CEO Mirko Boddecker, we are taking a trip inside the machine while learning about the extremely complex and fascinating paper coating process.

Well done Lina and the crew. I always wanted to see inside one of those production lines. I've seen kilometres of long buildings in Rochester the hometown of Kodak, but I've never actually seen it inside.

Entering those analog production processes is like walking through a piece of history. A couple of years ago I was so lucky to see the production processes at Impossible project film. Seeing this whole process makes me particularly anxious. It makes me realize that the whole world of traditional photography hangs by a very thin, antiquated and complicated thread. I hope that structures of this type will last over time because it would be very difficult to create new ones.
Food factories are as (even more) complex and we still make them nowadays. IMHO The only thing that would make it difficult to make a new one today is the cost, not the technology itself.
i started studies in this 1970's. simi pro amitour, failed my college class, but, worked at Sioux Falls ,Harolds film proscess lab, brot in mail bags, switched the bulk roll of 35 onto new canister in darkroom.,made photograph copies for restore. also.last was QLX kodak plant in Tempe,Az till they layd off in 07. similar factories i worked,, made fibergass film for circuit board factory. 3 stories of dip into resin an dryers, = very dangerous as flamible. So neat to see this. my Kin, Krayhenbuhl are frum Bern...

Thank you for this tour it was cool. Guess what I now have a Beseler 8x10 enlarger to go with my 4x5 enlarger. It is a beauty and it was free. Now I just need a 8x10 camera 😝

I got an Omega D2 4x5 enlarger and a Beseler 8x10 enlarger from a family of an old man that passed away. They wanted too give it to someone they knew would use and appreciate it. I already own a Beseler 45 universal so I am kind of enlarger rich right now.

Two mentioned things are related to Hungarian photo chemistry, the first is the Forte polywarmtone paper, the second is cibachrome. The procedure on which cibachrome is based first developed by the Hungarian Béla Gáspár. He announced his invention in the early 1930s and called it Gáspárcolor process. From the 1960s it was bought by Ilfor, who develops cibachrome in cooperation with Ciba.

What is the highest super glossy paper in the world made like? It is Kodak photo paper?

Why do you show a package of Forte paper when your video is about Adox paper?
Because the Polywarmtone paper recipe was originally developed by Forte. Then the Forte business collapsed, and Adox saved the recipe and the machines!
That part I got. But are they still packaging it in the old Forte boxes?
Oh no, of course not! The box was only referencing the old product
@@linabessonova That was probably not the best idea. Forte wasn't exactly known for high quality paper. A sales rep I knew back in the late 90's gave me several boxes to try out. I did. It was so bad, it was unusable. Not a reputation you really want to share.

I ask me one thing. He told that the Milk will flow back from coating area to the bottles and will be reused, but how they separate the two mixed Milks from themselves?
We cannot rescue emulsion which ran down the cascade. What we do is to circulate the emulsions just before the cascade until the whole cycle is stable. Then we switch a valve and inject them into the cascade.

Will the paper need a curing time?
Do you mean until it is hardened out? if so: No :-)
@@ADOXPHOTO I believe (it was a long time ago) that the curing was due to paper speed and how it normalized over a few months of curing. (I may be mistaken as it was a very long time ago)
13:54 that guy is using WHITE light there? Doesnt that ruin the emulsion?
I am assuming that was before the actual coating of the emulsion began, it didn't look like it was in contact with the paper.
