well done! You are very thorough. I have never printed on RC paper. Now I may have to try it to determine my print solutions before I print on fiber based.
I just got a darkroom again recently and have been using up my supply of generation IV. I just ordered a box of gen V and I'm very excited to give it a go.
I actually ordered myself a box late last week, and it arrived today! After watching this review, I'm now even more excited to try this new paper. I'm also wondering when Ilford will start shipping it in sizes larger than 8x10. (Now if only I could get one of those little swag packets without having to be a popular vlogger... I've got too many CatLabs stickers, and I need a bit more variety.)
Ilford is waiting for RC IV stock to finish, and will gradually replace it with the new paper in all sizes! So it depends how fast people buy the old one :D
I subscribed because I have an unopened bottle of HC110 from 1998, also some open Ilford paper, some TriX pan in a bulk loader, and I, too, have an enlarger and know how to use. But I haven't had need for black and white prints since then (for publication) and I recently purchased my first digital camera which I absolutely love and can use all my old beautiful lens.
I had a similar experience when I switched from IV to V paper and also thought that maybe something was wrong with my gen IV batch because the results were much different in the black and dark tones. I really love the new paper though, and it seems to be faster than the old paper, which is always nice.
Thans for your in-depte testing and analysis, Lina. This was exactly the info I was looping for! Couldn’t order it het in my country, so still sticking with generation 4 rc and FB papers until I can. Currently, I shoot portraits using gen 4 RC paper as negative, then wet contact printing to FB paper. Very interested to see how gen 5 behaves for that application. Just picked up a 35mm enlarger yesterday, so Ilford’s hope for more darkroom printing is definitely happening 😎
Thanks Lina for the review. I've just Se toned some of the paper and it works better than expected for RC (KRST 1+9, 3 minutes). I'd definitely be willing to use the Multigrade 'V' for high quality results.
Really informative video! You've hit on all the points that most printers would be concerned with. Due to cost factors, I often try to work out my dodging/burning and split-grade plan for an image on RC paper, then translate that to FB paper for the final prints. It's always been a compromise to do it this way and I think this new paper may reduce that gap between RC and FB results by a significant amount. I'm in California where water usage is always a concern, so if I can get similar results to FB with shorter wash times, that'll be a big advantage.
Hi Lina, I,m Daniel from Spain but watching you from Berlin. Just started to print at home and I'm enjoying it a lot. Got a lot of inspiration and learned from your videos, so first of all thank you. I'll jump into FB, but I don't want to waste that much water so I'm thinking of some system to collect the water and use it later for flushing the toilet :D Kind of difficult to stay analog and care for the planet haha.
Hi Daniel, Re-using water would be totally awesome! I'm always thinking of optimizing general waste from the darkroom process too. Best of luck with printing!
You’ll save lots of photo paper and chems if you print using the iOS app enLARGE, which lets you make all your test prints at tiny sizes, then you use the app to compute the required exposure times to make larger prints, instead of making all your test and work prints at actual enlargement size
Cool. Thank you for making this informative video. I've been meaning to get back into darkroom printing for a while, but have held off since I didn't want to deal with the long wash times of FB paper; water is expensive and kind of scarce here in California. I'm excited to try this new paper out.
I love your videos! 💙 Also, I have a bunch of darkroom equipment that was given to me, but I haven't used it yet. Are you planning to make a video on how to set up the darkroom and what equipment you need? That would be awesome!
Hi Lina, thanks for the excellent review. Seeing all your videos help so much for dealing in the Darkroom👍. Ooo btw I like the frame in every photo of yours. How you made it? Thanks
Hi Lina, I've just found your channel and subscribed. You're doing a great job! I hope you find more time to create more content. One of the things I'd be interested in seeing is your technique for flatting FB prints. If you've already covered this in one of your other videos I apologise as I have got to see all of them yet. Looking forward to seeing more.
Interesting. I've only ever used RC for contact prints because it's cheaper and quicker. I tried doing little work prints with RC but never quite liked the way Ilford's own version IV worked. I'll grab a box and have another go so thanks for the video!
Hello. Good channel. Thanks for advice. I’m fairly new to printing. Would you be able to post somewhere detailed photos of those three different finishes?? Perhaps with macro photos of reflection to natural light... I have started printing on satin paper but considering to buy gloss as I like punchier blacks. With cost of paper it would be beneficial if there is proper comparison of these three finishes. As well as how each one is different once mounted behind museum glass. Also you mentioned that your favourite is pearl, why so? Thanks. All the best!! V
Thanks for the review of Ilford's new paper. I'm glad they're still inventing new analog products. I've noticed that, with Ilford papers, Dmax is always better with warmer tone papers. When Ilford came out with their Classic and Cooltone FB papers (around 2016-ish), I bought a freezer and stocked up on MG IV FB and RC because it has a better contrast range and a colder tone. MG IV doesn't change color much when toned (which I consider a feature, not a bug), but Dmax improves on both FB and RC. Admittedly, MG IV has a terrible characteristic curve at low contrast. In nay case, I'm afraid that this new MGRC will result in MG IV RC going extinct the way MG IV FB has, so I may buy more. Anyway, I just ordered a box of the new pearl paper to try, but it sounds like an RC version of their Classic MG FB.
Thank you so much for your excellent review of the new paper - just what I've been looking for! Definitely looks like one that I will be using, especially in the pearl finish, which I actually prefer to fb semi-matt or unglazed glossy - for glossy, I dislike RC (I find it much too "plasticky""), but absolutely love the out-of-fashion ferrotyped fb glossy finish, so will be sticking with fb paper for glossy. Thank you again for your review!
I noticed you are based in Florence, Italy. I wish I'd known that when I was there in late October on a recreational photo expedition to Italy. I would have loved to see your darkroom and some of your prints. The only darkroom I've seen in the last decade has been my own.
Excellent review, thank you - sounds like this is going to be a way better paper for test prints! On a side note, what camera are you using for your darkroom video shots? it seems super low noise.
Recently some of us tried this new paper in our community darkroom which has re-opened because less bat virus. We really didn't like it... in fact we first thought something was wrong with our developer, but then concluded it was the paper. Plus, the times both under enlarger and in developer were way different from before. Do you think everyone might have bought a bad batch?
Ilford should pay you for this, really.. I’m getting my V papers in two days. Really keen to try after so many packets of the IV paper. Oh, how I wish I could get that merch too..
Great review indeed ! A better RC paper is probably a good thing, but I will continue to use my Foma FB paper. First of all because it is much cheaper than even Ilford's RC multigrade IV, and also because the rendering and handling of FB paper is incomparable. Even if they have succeeded in improving the intensity of the blacks, the surface will still be a plastic surface (too) shiny for my taste... Looking at a paper made of fibres is something else I think!
Ciao Lina..ottimo canale, video molto interessanti.
Now at last Ilford Multigrade RC V lookes like the old AGFA MCP ....... 25 years ago I started my darkroom live with Ilford Multigrade RC IV for a "bleu monday" , it was bleu and the blacks were dull dark grey . With AGFA MCP I had much better RC prints . After 2006 , AGFA got RIP , I had 7 bad darkroom years but since 2013 I print only on FB paper . I will not look back but I'am happy there is now a realy good RC paper for other users . Other RC paper are for me lost efforts that cost a lot off time and money .
The Agfa MCP is available as Adox MCP paper (www.adox.de/Photo/photopaper/adox-mcp-310312-rc-paper/)! Have you tried it? It has always been a better RC than the MGRC IV for sure. Now the new Gen V is at same level. The FB Adox MCC is also very close to Agfa MCC.
Hi Lissa, where did you get the desitometer? I've been looking for one for a long time but I can't find what model it is? I would be very pleased if you answered me. Thank you
Haha no, fiber glossy had higher Dmax than pearl RC, but I didn't get RC glossy samples, which could possibly have higher reflective density because of extra gloss

Some people actually use it for the plastic look - especially the glossy. There is no FB paper with such gloss (not that I know of). Also, RC is easier to mount. I've seen some actual artwork sold in galleries printed on RC
It would be super difficult. I learned photography in English, and I don't know many photo-related words (like dmax, gloss, contrast grade...) in Russian.
Thanks so much for this Lina and all of the work that you put in testing and filming this. We're really pleased that you liked the #MGRCDL paper. :)
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity!
I'm immensely thankful to both you and Ilford for making a review for this.
Can't wait to get back In The darkroom and try some for myself! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Wow, that's a huge upgrade! I can't wait to try these out.
Thanks Lina for this fantastic comparative test. You have done a great work.
Talking about darkroom your opinion is a reference.
Thank you so much!
I've been using Multi Grade IV for years, thank you for reviewing Multi Grade V Lina. I can't wait to try this.
Please let us know how you get on with it Bill :)
Solid video. It was great to see all those comparisons.
Wow !!! What an review !!! Cant wait to test this paper out !!! Im an Ilford man trough and through ! Love your work b.t.w. !
Thank you!
Looking forward to getting some in my darkroom. It’ll be great to be able to to do test prints with the RC, but final prints with the classic fiber.
Very well done review, thanks!
well done! You are very thorough. I have never printed on RC paper. Now I may have to try it to determine my print solutions before I print on fiber based.

Thanks Lina. Appreciate your expertise. I've always been a glossy RC guy. Looking forward to getting some MG V!
Yes, this glossy RC is certainly certainly a great product for you
I think this paper will really motivate people to start printing again. I’m really curious how this paper will print. Thanks ilford!

It's a super old Sony A7R camera. I bought it like 6 years ago and it's the best investment of my life. Doesn't shoot 4k though.
Excellent review! I’ve always hated how milky the my blacks were with RC. Looking foreword to trying the new RC :-)
'milky'! Exactly! I couldn't find the word. On new paper blacks are black for sure

Ciao Livia, dove posso trovare queste nuove in vendita? Non le trovo su nessun sito.
Non c'e questa carta ancora in negozi, pero deve arrivare durante il prossimo mese... spero!

Hi, it's from Heiland Electronics!
Can't wait to get my hands on that beautiful paper! Oh BTW, what sepia toner do you use? Fotospeed?
Sepia is from Foma!
Fade to Black ;)
Лина. Добрый день. Огромная просьба озвучить на русском или добавить субтитры. Все таки у вас информация очень интересная.
when will it be released for buying ?
I think it's already available in most countries, and still getting to some
It is available now in limited sizes and will roll our into other sizes as the existing stock of the MGIV finishes
I preordered from B&H when it was announced and glossy has been shipped and pearl is "preparing for shipping".. so pretty much available now!
I've just take two packs of MGRC IV for my first EVER print session.... 😓
You will be fine
It's still a great paper Lorenzo. It's been the go-to paper for a lot of people over the last 25 years!

One of my favorites! :D
I’m pretty sure that dmax exceeded fiber based paper because Lina didn’t tell the results :) ;)
Haha no, fiber glossy had higher Dmax than pearl RC, but I didn't get RC glossy samples, which could possibly have higher reflective density because of extra gloss
I prefer Baryt paper
For sure me too! Just this one would be great for tests. Not final prints of course.
Было бы несказанно здорово если были бы субтитры на русском))) Скажите пожалуйста это возможно осуществить?
ciao sei una bella ragazza, oltre ad essere brava.
