- This is what happens when you perform the infamous Minus World glitch while playing the Japanese Famicom Disk System version of Super Mario Bros. There are lots of surprises in this video and many failed attempts at getting in that pipe but bear with me. If you do you will see many unique glitches!

+MrPhantaze , according to some Game Genie codes that were discovered in the 2000s or so, these same Japanese Minus World levels are also accessible, though, unfortunately, you can not beat them and access the Star Levels like you can in the Japanese version of the game once they are beaten.

That's funny. When I was younger, some kid at school tried to convince me there was a world 0 in SMB. Perhaps this is what he was referring to? Despite trying really hard, I could never find it and I just figured he was trolling me. Turns out the kid was telling the truth after all! I'll be damned...

Minus world explanation: In another level, probably W4-2 (lol 42), there is a warp zone. With NO pipes around the only pipe in the middle, which brings you to W5. Empty tiles are "36", so the "invisible" pipes were "36". In W1-2, when not loaded completely, it has the date for W4's warp zone (WARNING: Don't go back too far, or it will load). Thus, middle pipe takes you to W5. Other pipes are then "36", so when you go in it, you are actually in "36-1" (World 36-1/W36-1), but 36 shows as blank. Thus, it only shows the -1 part, and then, you are brought to, the god of all glitches, the most famous, MINUS WORLD (36-1). End pipe=beginning. The end part of level does NOT exist here in 36-1/-1. So you are sent to the beginning. Thats what 36-1/-1 is.

Fun fact: 36-4 actually has a element that insta-crashes the game, hence why you were brought back to the start screen.
Actually, it's just that it's timer is less than 0, so it ends instantly, and it also skips the cutscenes " -4" causing you to lose instantly.

Honestly I think that after every castle starting on 1-4 game checks if mario is about to go to the next world. However normally after 8-4 it will send you to the title screen so being at 36-3 and touch that axe, the game sees that mario is in fact, after 8-4 so it brings mario to the title screen. This is what I think so dont get angry at me that I am wrong.

Once when I was a kid, I was playing SMB on a Famiclone, and the game suddenly resetted. I didn't understood why, but when I restarted, the game sent me to these minus levels. I couldn't believe what I saw, I was so excited. This never happened ever again

When i was 6 years old, i had a nes copy called "polystation" and i have the smb cartridge. And i was playing with my friends when the game restarts and when i restarted the game, the game just started on these minus stages. Me and my friends thought that was a secret level

Your right it is real, but it dose work on US copy, looks way deferent then the US copy, the layout of the -1 lvs been to -3 as a kid, the trick to get past it was to go over some stuff and under some stuff or it would just keep doing the same lv layout. All 3 lvs was water lvs, never did get past -3

I don't remember minus world ever originally having an end. And it wasn't all glitchy. I grew up on this game on the original NES. The easiest way to walk walk was to break the second brick over and then do the backward jump making sure not to break the first brick. You don't even have to crouch. There were things we could get Mario to do like climb walls to get to the top. The wall walking was always fun. Turtle tapping for extra lives.
Thats the nes version of the minus world, on the other hand, the famicom version of super mario bros has a more interessting minus world.

Very cool. Didn't realize that there was a different -1 on the FDS version. When ever I see a SMB in a shop or con I always get to -1 and then pause and walk away. It is fun to see the confusion on people's faces when they randomly walk up to the machine to play.

For those who say that world minus one is a looping underwater level, that level is in the NES version of SMB. As shown at the beginning of the video, this is the famicon version of SMB.

From what I understand about this game, there's roughly about 256 stages in the original mario game alone. The first set is the ones we know, the other set is from after rescuing peach when she says "We present you a new quest" Those levels were recreated when SNES came out as "The lost levels" However, even beyond the negative world, there's hidden stages that you can't access without using emulators, because those kinds of levels aren't meant to be used, but, are still there.
Mistake, the lost levels is smb2, game that wasn't exported out of japan cause of its high difficulty
"a new quest" is just the same maps but enemies are sped up and goombas are replaced with the beetle fellas

I was 5 years old when i had NES clone that then failed and they had to throw it away, and i played this Super Mario, the first videogame i played in my life. At the time i would naturally never have know about these glitches and above all knowing what they meant. When i then rediscovered this Super Mario going to see the story of the Super Mario series of videogames, the NES Mini had already been released for two years, i bought it and you can imagine the shivers of nostalgia i felt... This glitch the i tried, like you did, it was a job to be able to do it, but the levels were only one, that is the -1, which however is practically equal 2-2. This is because i’m European, so the version of my NES Mini is rightly European. And anyway in the glitch level -1, the glitch doesn’t forgive because you are practically stuck inside the level because once you pass the latter you always find yourself again
this video is famicom’s minus world, while the minus world you got is the nes’s one which is a copy of 7-2 with a broken pipe (basically every glitched world have broken pipes). The only real interesting thing you can do with nes’s minus world is corruping the enemies that spawn, as they wont be the same corrupted ones as on 7-2. You can even get a mushroom to spawn if you use the midpoint of the minus world.

The clone version without the Famicom system is a clone of 7-2 jsyk.

I'm confused. I knew there was the warp pipes over there. But I always got to them from the top of the level where it loads them completely. If I clip through the pipe/wall it will take me there? I have been not living my life to the fullest I guess🤣
You need to clip through the wall and make sure you only go just far enough to the right that you can go down the first pipe. If you go too far, it will load the pipes normally.

Where you first entered the negative world, I somewhat knew about this, but if you break the brick next to the pipe, backwards like you were doing and anger the bricks higher, you get sucked through the brick wall, and go all the way over to the warp pipe- (there is only one now) go in it, and it’s a negative world that’s all under water, and as far as I know, there is no end and you eventually die because the clock runs out.

Yeah the NES VERSION SMB of negative world was just a water level that kept going and going
after beating -3, the game believes that you beat the game and the game will now be in "Hard Mode". So...yeah, a faster way to access hard mode. Also in -1 or -2 you should always grab the flagpole on the lower half, otherwise the game will crash as the fireworks go off.
I know what I said! just do not grab the flagpole on the upper half unless it is the only way.
I have a feeling that those extra levels were meant for testing during the development of the game, especially judging by how buggy it is with some of the palette's and textures.

I thought what was essentially World 4-4 with the Underground tilemap and color palette, BGM, enemies from The Lost Levels, and no Bowser at the end was incredibly fascinating. The 'Ghost Peach', however, was horrifying.

I was playing an ROM hack called Luigi Bros. (not a Mario Bros. hack) and at World 2-1 I runned and jumped over the flagpole. I had to wait time to expire.

This is how I would explain how this glitch works!
1. When the pipe is entered, it takes the text above the warp pipe, (Invisible text is labeled $24), and that is used as the warp offset, and gets $33($ means hex). $33 tells the game to look $33(51 bytes) forward in code. This actually goes past the table it's in, and reaches the enemy offset table. It uses this data to get the data for 7-2. So, it takes you to 7-2.
2. Actually, the reason that you are sent to the beginning over and over, is because the level map is 7-2, but the world you're actually on is 36-1. And since it doesn't mach up, it can't send you out of the world.

The Toontastic Toon That's what they did to make the game harder on later playthroughs after you beat the game. Buzzy
Beetles are tougher and immune to fireballs so replacing goombas with them makes the game more difficult.

I've beat -1 on the American version and it just kept starting over. there was no way out.
I think the US and Japanese version have slightly different data. On the US version it loops infinitely because the spot in memory it points to tells it to load the layout of 7-2, but it doesn't reset the warp pipe location to be used since the level isn't loaded properly, so the warp pipe sending location at the end of the level is exactly the same as it was before you entered the minus world, i.e. it points to the beginning of the same level. On the Japanese version it loads a level that doesn't end in a warp pipe, so you can proceed through multiple levels as normal.
