    I'm not sure that you're explaining bulge and roll correctly - bulge and roll means a clubface (on woods and hybrids rather than irons) is effectively curved (like an upturned saucer). This curving of the face can create gear effect which can improve ball flight characteristics on mis-strikes. This is why high toe strikes can draw and low heel strikes can fade (all of this is relative to path and club face delivery). Bulge and roll does not mean that the clubface "is effectively square front to back, top to bottom". Also, "twist face" technology is not new. Cobra have used a version of it for years and this is old Adams technology (we all remember that some time agoTaylorMade bought Adams golf for their R&D and tech innovations - not to sell Adams clubs) that was most famously used in their A4 Tech 9015D driver. The difference is that TaylorMade have a colossal marketing budget. Don't get me wrong, TaylorMade make great product and I'm not a TM hater but I just think that consumers should be aware of all of this before they buy into marketing hyperbole and talk of geocoustic technology, speed foam and hammerheads! Cheers.

    Great open review on this driver. I do agree that you won't know if the twisted face will help or hurt your swing without knowing how you strike the ball and your swing path on miss-strikes. You definitely need to swing this in a swing lab and see how your numbers are with it before adding it to your bag.

    I liked your review - for the following reason - the trackman data - it does not lie. I have a similar swing speed so it really gives me an understanding of what I can expect to get out of this driver as far as distance is concerned. The dispersion looks good as well - though that is harder to judge versus my swing without club face path data. Well done!

    For a crude anlysis you could try hitting a few more shots say maybe 30 and overlay 30 shots with current driver and compare the dispersion circles. You'd hope the TM would be tighter

    Andy, I think the correction is subtle, if you hit a few closed face toe strikes you might see a tighter shot pattern compared to the M1. You conducted a good fair test.

    Andy, you need to see where your hitting the ball on the face and is the face open or closed to path. Then you'll know if it can help you or hurt your game.

    The longest drive you had was with 2500rpm spin rate. Too many people getting suckered into believing less spin than that is always better. Not if your swing speed isn’t at tour level. Ball just drops out the air. So important to get fit to get the best out of it for your own specs

    Great video Andy. As impartial as ever and very interesting for a high handicapper like myself. I currently use a highly adjusted Titleist 917 D2 to try and take out my, at times, savage right to left hook and it’s working well for me. But this is a driver I may well be keen on trying out for myself.

    Good honest review Andy. Hopefully you’re able to do a more in-depth test that gives some clarity to whether twist face does anything. Glad you emphasized that regardless of the tech, the driver performed well & looked nice. Not sure what else really should matter when in the market for a shiny new toy.

    If your bad shot is a snap hook then get a stock 10.5 degree. Don't get a 9.5 and move it up a degree because that's immediately closing the face angle by 2 degrees.

    Andy, as I was saying on your announcement video, that's a statistical game this face is playing and as such, it needs statistical testing.
    One way you could do it is take the M1 of last year, that appart from this is quite similar, using the same shaft on both ideally, and then go on Trackman or Skytrack and bash balls away in small clusters (like 2 balls with the M3, 2 balls with the M1) until you have at the very least 30 shots with each, so a grand total of 60 shots. For each shot you have the distance to centre (left/right, but they simply have to be the absolute value, at first). In excel you report all those "distances left or right to the target line" and then use analysis tool (in the data tab... you might have to activate that first) and use "t-test paired two samples for mean". The table you'll get from Excel will tell you what is the chance that you're getting the results you see purely by randomness or if there is something that reduces the dispersion on the M3. If the value reported as "P(T

    • @francoisdesmoulins-lebeaul4273
      @francoisdesmoulins-lebeaul4273 6 лет назад

      You can get that p-value (probability of being mistaken in believing twist face works) also using directly an Excel function called "T.TEST" and selecting your data, then 1 and then 1 (or 3, whichever gives the largest value, actually, for "safety").

    With a club head speed under 100, have you considered a senior shaft rather than stiff shaft. Yes I know you fit clubs, but in my various fittings a couple of years ago as I conceded to being older I spent a little over an hour with a fitter just hitting drivers. Ping, Callaway and Titlist at the time. In each case I started with my existing extra stiff flex which I had been using for years. By the time I was done, I had hit dozen of balls with each head, using extra stiff, stiff, regular and senior. My distances didn't change significantly but by distributions were radically different regardless of head (best results were with the Ping G400) Extra stiff I had a two way miss of 35yards plus, mostly right, with the Stiff it was 30+/-, regular 25 yards, Senior flex 5 yards left, max 15 yards right and this has held for a year on course.
    Using a 9.5 degree driver head, on a 10 shot average I have a 201 yard carry and 218 with roll out at sea level 75 degree ambient. 12.5 degree average launch angle on a back swing no farther than 9 O'clock. If I really lay in I can get 245 carry but will invariably pull right, usually not more than the 15 yards off center line. Back doesn't let me do this often. Club head speed is between 95 to 105 depending on warm up and how the back feels. My average almost right at 100 for a 10 shot average.
    Would love to see your distributing on the M3 or M4 with a senior shaft if your club head speed really is in the 98 range.

    Happy New Year Andy, glad to have you back on RUclips after the Hols. Thanks for the review and I look forward to you doing a comparison with the old M1. Although I`m a Ping man myself and have never owned a TM club, I`m amazed at the venom that is being directed at these clubs and to TM generally! Somebody down south has really got his rabble stirred up. Surely all that matters is do they work for the individual average golfer, if they do buy it if they don`t then don`t buy it. Simple. Keep up the good work Andy and have a Great 2018

    Andy, I think you'd have to hit a lot of balls and know where they hit the face before you could draw a conclusion. It would be informative to use foot powder spray on the face and keep notes on ball flight or get better launch monitor strike data. I suppose over time on course you could get a feeling if the Twist face was providing some benefit to you but that'll take quite a few rounds and a good, accurate and well organized data set. (GPS tracking:Arcos, Game golf, etc) Thanks for the review, looking forward to seeing M4 and more for TM.

    What I'd like to see included in reviews is this... what mods are they willing to make at the factory to properly fit a club? (beyond the standard length and lie angle)? If you're someone who's bad shots are hooks but you also need GI irons, are they willing/able to take out the offset? Titleist seems to be able and willing to do that for tour pro's and also offered to do that for Crossfield but will they do it for the average golfer? What about head weight? I have weak hands and wrists and need lighter than standard heads. Can/will they reduce the head weight? Ping told me all their irons come with adjustable weights in the head and that with a standard shaft they could take swing weights down to C7 without making the entire club heavier (they told me that specifcally for the i200 and iblade, I assume same for G400). I got a similar answer from Titlelist for their GI irons (AP1, AP2, AP3). I also asked Taylormade the same question on their P790 and they said the head weight is what it is and no change can be made. I'd love to see details on customization limits for each club reviewed. It would save me a lot of emails and the days it takes for them to respond.

    290 yard drive seems strange especially considering it had quite a lot of spin, launch was high which is good

    • @brutusoftroy2810
      @brutusoftroy2810 6 лет назад

      that's total distance chap, carry distance is the only number to focus on really as roll out is determined by ground conditions, computers aren't good at predicting that.

    • @Cornwall1888
      @Cornwall1888 6 лет назад +1

      Brutus ofTroy that shot carried 23 yards further than any other, comment is relevant whether you look at carry or total distance

    • @brutusoftroy2810
      @brutusoftroy2810 6 лет назад

      I see what you're getting at. Yeah it's all club head delivery, his best distance comes when he hits up on the ball to launch it high but at the same time managing to keep the spin in the mid 2000's which keeps the ball in the air.

    • @Cornwall1888
      @Cornwall1888 6 лет назад

      Brutus ofTroy I thought below 2000 spin was optimal, I suppose it’s higher for lower swing speeds
      I read tour pros look for about 14* launch with 1700 spin
      Dustin testing the m3 was 124mph club head, 184mph ball speed, 14 launch 1800 spin 332 carry 352 total 😂😂

    • @brutusoftroy2810
      @brutusoftroy2810 6 лет назад

    This club is supposed to be very forgiving for off centre strikes. Andy thought he struck the ball quite well but his dispersion would suggest he did not.(Rick Shiels review was the same for dispersion)."if he can't tell if it helped or not" does this not sound like a lack of feel

  • @graememcdougall6391
    @graememcdougall6391 6 лет назад

    I would assume if strikes are fairly middled then twist face won’t matter. A tour pro face angle probably only a fraction open or closed. Whereas an amateur will be more open or closed which would likely be greater than twist face can counteract. M2 2016 still the best

    I've heard TM are bringing out the AYHTDIJLAI club's in the near future. AYHTDIJLAI which stands for {All you have to do is just look at it} and it goes straight and long, a golf club is a piece of metal not much bigger than a golf bal and itl takes a lot of skill to swing that piece of metal very fast and make good contact consistently, what I'm trying to say is it's one's own skill level that makes it go straight and long , come to think of it i must be a super skilled golfer because ive got all the shots in the bag, just Can't execute them at the right time but don't worry lads the New AYHTDIJLAI will be on the shelves in the near future 😁 all a bit tongue in cheek but where will it end. Keep practicing and save yourself a small fortune.

    There’s no way 98mph club head speed produces those carry and total distances. You’ve got a 102.5mph swing in there with 2000 spin carrying 218 compared to a 98.6mph swing spinning at 2506 and carrying 265... that can’t be right ?

    • @nickdelia9122

      The 102.5mph shot only launched 8.6 degrees. I would think that may account for the poor carry distance on that shot.
      The other shot you are comparing to launched at 18.1 degrees.

    From the reviews I've seen so far the hype is just that, hype. In golf strike is king. There is nothing that will correct a hook or a slice for you. You would have to test for a year in a gaming environment to see if this club would actually save you strokes.

      Phil Ovenell but every golfer strikes the ball with the club, how is that “King”? You mean striking the ball in the sweet spot is the desired result ? You may as well say, being a good golfer is king. Just a silly saying parroted by people who don’t think for themselves .

      Topbloke Golf Vlogs “people who don’t think for themselves”? Sounds like you’re trying to make a counter argument just for the sake of arguing. Andy, plus many others who have tested this specific driver are getting the same results. Bad strikes produce poor results... no attempt at correction is going to top a good strike out of the middle, you do your own vlogs, this should not be foreign to you. I don’t care how you swing the club, you get the head in the right position at impact and it will win every time and you know it. Companies like TM are relying on the fact that the golfing public doesn’t do their own research, that’s where you vloggers come in with your honest and unbiased reviews... we hope. Andy needs more time but how many bad shots do you have to hit to see if there is help there?

    I think it's going to be impossible to see if it works in a test and back it with data. The trouble is, when I hit one out of the toe or heel it's a mistake brought on by a swing fault and all swing faults are unique. Your toe/heel strikes will be delivered differently than mine in terms of angle of attack, face to path etc, each strike/club head delivery is unique to the golfer. They will have tested it on robots and humans though so the theory is there. I think straighter is the wrong word though, more chance of hitting target would be a more accurate statement.

  • @darrenk7393
    @darrenk7393 6 лет назад

    Let me run this idea by you. Why not hit several balls with the M2 and M4 in the same session and compare the dispersion areas? Then, put the M1 and M3 in the most forgiving weight positions and compare their dispersion areas in the same sessions? After all, this is the proof as TaylorMade isn't saying accuracy improvements would be due to any other new features. That really should be the like for like test, M2 vs M4, and M1 vs M3 dispersion zones on the same sessions. I would also consider hitting ~25 balls, getting rid of the 5 most wayward or "shanked" shots in each to avoid including majorly misstruck balls in the test as that would skew the results. 20 shots vs 20 shots with 5 disregards in each round should do it.

      Allan Crowder Hi Allan yeah dark days exactly but not paying to much attention to it busy training & practicing. Will start again in April onwards. I’ll make sure I share my progress I’ve made from the winter etc and all the tour comps coming up also. So nothing will be missed. Thanks for your loyal support 🙂👍

  • @MyFoxworld

    Getting boring now Andy, when are you gonna start reviewing left handed clubs? 😁 I have seen a couple of reviews with this driver now where the ball seems to be doing the same as any other driver to be honest so the jury is still out for me. Will be having a bash on Monday evening see if there is anything between my old M2 and the M4.

  • @krusher74
    @krusher74 6 лет назад

    You need to do a 5 days test, hit 25 shots day with your normal driver, and then with the M3, on day 5 after 125 hits lets see if the dispersion is any better with the M3. You cant give us a conclusion because your "testing" without testing against anything.

  • @oldfoggie123
    @oldfoggie123 6 лет назад

    Impossible to test unless the club face is delivered " square!" every time!....as with a robot...face open to path, closed to path.in to out or out to in will end up with the ball going in all directions!.....Fooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre!

    Good review but I think golf is becoming a joke for the everyday joe blogs like me the prices there charging for gear nowadays is a ripoff at least ping keep there stuff reasonably cheap I expect that driver will be priced at 400 plus

    A long winded way to say could not tell the difference, interesting no shot tracer or could not see the flight of the ball in this review, was that under instructions from Taylormade?
    Marketing for these product is very controlling let the performance speak for itself if they are that good?
    I use last years M2 driver but the marketing and controlling nature of reviews is making me think twice going forward about this brand which is a pity.

  • @georgesmith4639
    @georgesmith4639 6 лет назад

    Given that this tech is aimed at improving dispersion and only by a few yards at driver distance, it's impossible to test if you cant hold path and face to path exactly the same. Hate to say it but you have to trust TM's robot testing which they showed numbers for during the press conference with all their top players. If you don't feel you can trust them then you're only option is cough up the money for a robot.

    It's not revolutionary when Cobra has been using this face since 2012. TM is full of crap and this gives me more reason to hate them.
    Cobra called it canton bulge technology and are still using it in their F8.

    Dude... you know I love your vids and been a fan for a while now , but time for a reality check. No Golfer is putting a ball out there 290ish with a 143mph ball speed. Even optimized its not happening, not here, not in the UK, not on Mars, no where. Sorry to bust your bubble my friend. Keep em coming ... but keep em Real ! #Twistednumbers

    Sorry Andy but I am boycotting any reviews and reviewers that get Taylormade, Callaway or PXG free for testing. Mostly marketing crap anyway but Mark C. treatment by Taylormade is one of the reasons. A big factor is that they refuse to supply My Golf Spy with their equipment and that is my go to site for independent information. Hate to say it but you guys are basically turning out to be fluffers for the big boys. I will watch all your other reviews. Cheers.

      Jamie, if Andy was a Taylormade Shill, he would have been more positive about the M3 but he wasn’t, he gave an honest assessment. I think in the near future he’ll come up with a conclusion about the M3 probably he’ll do a comparison between the M3 & M1 to compare dispersion between the 2 drivers.

    • @TheAverageGolfer
      @TheAverageGolfer  6 лет назад +3

      Surprised you say that based on my comments as for dispersion, I am only average and I was more than happy with my performance, Im afraid thats the reality of average golfers but if you play to a better level then I understand these results will not be relevant to you.
