      tommy blade depends how you define being yourself. If it’s how you act naturally, then yeah - that. Only it’s hard to tell when something is just “what everybody would do” and when something is “what I would do” cuz it feels natural to you. It’s a lot of self-observation and having trustworthy people give their honest opinion of you. At least in my experience. It’s also doing - and, more importantly, knowing what you enjoy/love/think is better for you. It’s a lot of self-reflection, and it requires you to be able to pass judgement on yourself without beating yourself up - which can be hard for a lot of people.

    There are two sentences that I've heard in regards to this anime that will always be in my mind when talking about it. "This anime tells the most human stories with characters that aren't even human" and "We all have been every character in this show". Paru Itagaki has created a world that's filled to the brim with layered characters. And most of them are among the best written characters I have ever witnessed.

    • @thorveim1174
      @thorveim1174 4 года назад +23

      Yup... been reading the book myself, and I do see a lot of myself in a LOT of characters, or even if I don't, I see how a real life person would come to the same mindset. It's easily Legosi i see myself the most into (awkward in social situations although in a different way, mixed with the occasional violent urge I don't ever know what to do with apart from shoving it as deep down as i can every time, yet feels natural), with a bit of Jack (feeling I should be someone else and wasn't born as who i was supposed to be) and Louis on top (nowhere as extreme, but feeling I should always do better so no one can take pity on me is here)
      beastars's plot is average at best, it's world building is full of holes and as far as the books go isn't anywhere near top-tier drawing... but what it truely succeeds at is making deep, interesting characters that all have their own struggles.

And that made me fall in love with this anime that I read the whole manga within a day. This is one of the series where the saying "Don't judge the book by its cover" so applicable. One of the things that impacted me the most from the show was that moment where Haru was held captive and the Lion asked her to undress and she said "I get that you're a gourmet, but I'm sorry, this is about to be a very distasteful meal" and she looks directly at him, a carnivore THREE TIMES her size, DEAD IN THE EYE and says "you're about to taste the flavor of a woman who feels no shame nor is humiliated" and i DIED. I had goosebumps. It's such a good depiction of sexual abuse to a point where that's what i saw, I didn't see a rabbit about to be eaten alive, I saw a strong woman rebel against a sexual assaulter, and how she asserts her strenght in such a courageous, yet intelligent way that it left me speechless. Iconic.

      I also realized something about those Haru scenes way later. When she gets captured by the lions and when she gets attacked by Legosi, she just feels like a piece of meat, but then it clicked. Haru being outside at night knowing that she might very well be attacked by a carnivore felt so real to me as a woman. In those two moments, she felt like just a piece of meat in the eyes of those stronger than her and that's how so many women feel. Constantly being preyed upon by simply being women or in her case, a bunny/herbivore. Especially the scene with the lion who looks at her like a meal, but you clearly feel the sexual undertones. Beastars really is a great series.

    This anime didn't need dialogue, animation, music to speak to me; it did it through Legosi's pose: The slumped shoulders and hunched over back told me almost everything I needed to know in an instant. It's so uncommon for a character to have that as their default pose, and it's something that's probably easily glossed over for all the heavier and more striking elements of the presentation.

    • @prestonh.2771
      @prestonh.2771 4 года назад +307

      Yes, the pose says so much about him as a character. It isn't that he's beaten down and trying to hide, he is very intentionally trying to lessen his footprint in public. He's trying to take up less space, to be less imposing, to negate his height and nature by taking up posture that makes him appear meeker than he really is. The contrast from when he is in school (and other situations where he feels the need to take on the less imposing posture) and when he stands tall (often to fight or protect others) is striking.

    I’m a short, petite woman in the military, and I definitely related to Haru. Whereas short, petite women are treated almost childishly in the civilian world, it is much worse in the military world. I have had guys twice my size and weight tell me straight to my face that they expected me to fail, that the only reason I passed something or was promoted was because a quota had to be met, and I’ve constantly had my credibility questioned because I couldn’t have possibly done the same training as them and still received good evaluations, all because of my size.
    That’s why Haru is so relatable to me; even though we’re both afraid of being eaten up by society, we continue to push forward and hold on to the people who do encourage us and believe in us, who make us feel valued, and that in turn makes us feel stronger. We could have our entire world turn against us, but if that one person is there to make it better, it’s worth it.

    This is the first 3-D anime I’ve watched where the visuals actually look appealing and fluid. Usually it looks like a PlayStation cutscene, but Orange knocked it out of the park, visually. And not just the animation, but the directing and cinematography. Legosi and Haru’s conversation in the hotel, with the mirror showing his attack in the first episode while the camera slowly tracks around the shot is beautiful. Legosi and the Shishigumi boss’s fight is breathtaking. All of this gives the story itself an extra layer of polish. And the story, writing, music and voice acting aware all phenomenal as well. Legosi’s VA is beyond amazing (it is a CRIME that this is getting dubbed). Louis starts out interesting then gets REALLY interesting, and Haru is one of the best written female characters I’ve ever seen in any media, not just anime. I’ve watched the entire series twice and waiting for season 2 is going to kill me. I’m trying to not read the manga to see what happens next (or who Legosi is talking to in that last shot), we’ll see how long my willpower lasts.

      What may have helped with 3D animation are the non human faces. I noticed that many 3D animes have scenes where the facial expressions are really bland. Human heads have a a s*** ton of muscles. It might actually take longer to 3D animate a face than to draw it frame by frame. On the anthropomorphised animal faces, we probably don't notice it as much if they cut corners (which they have to, 2 or 3D) because we aren't trained in reading them.

It took years to find the right medication. Even now, he still has outbursts where he screams and yells. Many times he’s hit people, like me. Never on purpose, he’ll feel absolutely awhile afterwards, I remember one night after my dad had to pin him down for him to calm down, the next day my dad went to work with scratches across his face, and my brother spent the whole day apologizing and feeling bad. I have to admit he’s terrifying when his anger gets out of hand, but when he’s not having an outburst, he over apologizes and does whatever he can not to intimidate people. That’s why Legoshi reminds me of him, it’s a serious struggle

      Vinland Saga showcase one of the best Hero's Journey stories written in tune with the style of the old Norse sagas...and season 1 is only the prologue. We haven't had a good Viking story anywhere in a longtime, and Vinland Saga beat all expectations in terms of writing.
      What initially attracted me to Beastars is wanting to see how Anime could do a story with anthropomorphic characters...something prevalent in American animation, but most often done mediocre. Beastars turned out to showcase some of the best character development, and some of the deepest characters I'd ever seen. Beastars needs more exposure than it is getting...probably one of the best Anime stories I've ever seen in any gauenra, period.

    What I love about this series is that it's willing to bravely create nuanced, human-like, and well-rounded characters that can be relateable without having to over-exceed/forgoe flaws and attributes just to be likable.
    Like how you've described Haru in your vid, she's given a background that lets us know why she does what she does without saying it's anything right or wrong and leaves it to the audience to decide based on their own reasons/issues/ethics/backgrounds, as is the same with Louis and Legoshi.
    She may not be everybody's favorite character, but she never has to be and only wishes for respect as a fellow person in-universe to the series, just as not everyone has to like every single person they meet or be liked back throughout their lifetime, but can respect that they exist or not.

    I like how the Juno and Legoshi arc so far shows us the expectations of people dating only others of their races. Most notably in the african american/asian american communities.
    Throughout the first season of the anime a lot of the characters would try to hook Legoshi up with 'another of his own kind' specifically Juno. And Juno felt entitled to Legoshi's love purely on the basis of him being kind to her and being a wolf. (this could also dwell into the nicegirls community where like niceguys they feel entitled to romance/sex purely on trivial things).
    But Legoshi never loved Juno the same way he loved Haru, and even near the end of the season it is seen as him 'betraying his own species' similarly to how black men are treated for dating a woman of another race.
    I hope they introduce Melon, a character in the manga, into the anime as it has a take on how mixed children/adults are treated. And how Haru and Legoshi's relationship will probably fall apart due to prejudices not only towards the relationship but to the children that they will/not have. (I have not read the manga btw it was my take purely on the fact that Melon exists)

    I’ve always loved Rouis as a character, he’s so intense but so sad.. it’s an overwhelming realisation when you figure out why Haru said “I can see a deep sadness in him”, he hasn’t told a single soul who he was and therefore why he’s so eager to please everyone and why he does have that self destructive behaviour! I just hope we can look further into his life so far and him as a character in general! Loved this vid btw!!

    Also something that was really well done imo, Legoshi is afraid to hurt people as you said but they specifically show you in the first episode what he's capable of doing. You never wonder what he's afraid of because that one scene where he attack Haru it shows everything he fears. BUT THEN they go a mile beyond that and show his fear when interacting with her and how he reacts to seeing the damage he left her with.

    I originally watched Beastars for the relatability of my main two characters relationship. Me and my gf both have cute nicknames for each other, she calling me her wolf mama and me calling her my baby girl bunny. We, coming from different races and backgrounds, had to fight through her parents ingrained hatred of my race and her perceived ideas of what I was gonna do to her.
    After a long and rocky start, she fought out of the web of lies that her mom created and learned that I meant no harm to her. This was amazing to see in this anime in its own twist. But after a while, I watched it for the plot and mainly Legoshi’s amazing tone and delivery. It sounds uncaring and tone deaf but holds so much love and affection in it at times. I too have a toneless and seemingly uncaring voice but when I am with my gf, my voice is happier and more natural to me. I use the tone deaf sound of my voice to ward away people I don’t want to talk to or to reduce social interaction when I am tired. That paired with my creepy and unflattering dress attire makes me appear scary or unnerving at very least. Although all that, I have a warm interior and I am very caring of those I call friends.
    This anime helped me see that not only can a relationship like mine flourish but also it can break boundaries and build new bridges together.
    (Side note: thanks for reading this and taking the time out of your day to let me put across my thoughts and feelings. Sorry it was long winded but I hope it was easy enough to grasp)

    As someone who stumbled into Beastars because i caught a glimpse of it on reddit and couldn't understand it. I entered the show with no expectations. I gigured id give it an episode to test the waters but then i ended up binging the series twice. The first with a consumer eye and the second with a critical one. But in the second viewing i couldnt help but remember my own life through highschool and how much i could relate to Legoshi. Every action, thoughtz and fear i could empathise because i had been there. It was akin to looking into an odd mirror. I love this show and I cant wait until the manga continues or season 2 rolls around.

  • @gb7512

    This story is so fascinating. The fact that it is removed from the real world gives it such freedom to explore and develop complex themes. At the end of the day, Legosi is a wolf, Haru is a rabbit, Louie a deer, they're literal animals - direct parallels to human dynamics isn't possible. Instead, the anime explores prejudice in relation to race, sexism in relation to species, sexuality to being queer or deviant from society. No one can look at Beastars and say "this scene is about this thing in our world" because it does such a wonderful job to create its own world and rules. While being completely unique from any experiences we may have, it still does remain relatable. We see the message set to the world of Beastars and are given the freedom to evaluate and interpret what it means to our own lives based on our own experiences.
    I may be rambling, and these points are hardly new, but this story has such space for discussion and I am so happy to see every video or post that gives a new and interesting take on it!

You nailed how deep and really impactful the world, characters, and the writing is in Beastars and I love both the anime and the manga! I am glad they went with this really high degree of 3D animation, it is some of the most smooth and well directed animation using 3D I have ever seen. I am also glad the tweaked the character designs some for the anime, I love the original manga artwork just as much but I feel animated it would not have looked as smooth so now I can enjoy the anime artwork along with the manga artwork. Honestly, I read the manga first and I love the 3d animation in it. However, it's also nice that they have those moments of 2d flashes here and there to give it a good bit of flair. Though I do have one thing bad to say about it: I think the shot where Legoshi brushes up his cheek with his paint covered hand would have looked a thousand times better with a more sketchy and gritty flash of 2d, that being said, I still love it animated.

    I binged this series in less than 12 hours, including sleeping. I captures the human experience so incredibly well! My two favorite scenes from the first season are the two sexual scenes with Legoshi and Haru. In the first, Haru, who appears weak and innocent, is revealed to be experienced and rather promiscuous, while Legoshi, like so many teenage boys, is assumed to be ready to go and is instead confused and even frightened by the situation. In the second scene, both are now willing participants, yet, after so much has been spent on the fact Legoshi has never had sex and Haru has never been with a carnivore and neither knows if his instincts during the act will lead him to devour her, its Haru who suddenly discovers her body is being controlled by its instincts and despite Legoshi's care, she seizes up and wants to be devoured. Absolutely fantastic writing!
