    I’ve never gotten in trouble for smoking my pipe, but I did get in trouble at a hotel once. I was at like a Holiday Inn or Hilton some nonsense in Nashville and I went to a local tobacco store that day and had a pipe with the guys there. I went back to the hotel and dropped my pipes off and went about my day. At check out the following day they wanted to hit me with a smoking fine because the cleaning staff saw my pipes and tobacco jars. It took a lot of arguing and management and getting involved, but ultimately they could not prove that I smoked in there. One of their arguments was just having my pipe and the tobacco in there was the same as smoking, which I told them was “ridiculous“ (you know what I really mean). and no I did not pay any fines.

    I played baseball as a 12 year old back in the early 80s in North Carolina. The coaches smoked, the umpires smoked, the parents smoked and a lot of us child players chewed tobacco or dipped snuff. Sometimes time out was called and the coaches and umpire would gather together to discuss game rules over a smoke. Everyone remained calm and nobody complained about smoke. Non smokers just dealt with it. I miss those days.

      Great story! Definitely different times. I understand the need to change certain rules over the years, but when you’re outdoors in a public space, it seems a little odd.

    I smoke all the time. I once, without thinking, walked into my local grocery store with a lit pipe in my mouth. I was deep in thought but did notice a couple of sideway glances. Finally a older lady who worked there came up to me and said “I’m sorry but you can’t smoke in here”. I covered the bowl with my hand and apologized profusely. As I was walking out to put the pipe in my truck she added “I love the smell, it reminds me of my father”. She was as nice as she could be. Every time I’ve seen her since she comments on how much she loves the smell of a pipe and how rare it is to see people smoking them these days.

    I have only been smoking for two months, and my wife and I went on a little get-away for a couple nights about my second week into smoking. I was so excited about smoking that I took a couple pipes and tins with me. We went out to eat one night at a pizza joint that had outdoor seating and games (cornhole, jenga), and I really thought it would be cool to eat some pizza and fire up a bowl. So I decided - why not, and asked the owner if he’d mind if I smoked my pipe at my table, and he said “Sure - just make sure your downwind of people.” I was very surprised and quite happy about it! It was only about my 10th bowl ever, and there I was sitting outside a public restaurant smoking a pipe. I was loving it!

    A little league coach of mine was constantly smoking a pipe. Standing on 3rd base line with an old billiard sticking out of his mouth puffing away. Of course this was the early 80's. His choice of smoke was Captain Black. I loved the smell of it...and cigars. He's one of the reasons I took up the pipe much later on in life. Fond memories.

    Sometimes people and be buttholes. I have had people come and stand next to me and say that the smoke is bothering them. I am standing by myself and she comes next to me and says that the smoke is bothering her. I simply said, “don’t stand next to me. Go back to wear you were standing and keep your commentary to yourself.” I did say it politely. that whole encounter could have been prevented if she would have stayed where she was. Some people cannot help being a butthole! Continue to enjoy the pipe smoke!

    Titled: Smoking Encounter
    I'm allot older than you. When I grew up, everyone smoked openly and everywhere. In the house, in the car, in stores, and at work. In my office each desk came standard with an ashtray. Then on January 2, 2008, my state started the Smoke-Free Act. I was with my friend, who was a 2 pack a day smoker, and we went to Lowes Hardware. The check out line had about 12 people in it, and we were at the end of the line. My friend naturally, as he had done all of his life, takes out a cigerette and lights it. All of a sudden we hear this woman screaming at the top of her lungs. The cashier came running from behind the register, shaking her fist in the air as she passed each person in line. I'm thinking, "Oh God, some one is robbing the store..?" She runs up to my friend screaming in his face, "STOP, STOP, put that thing out, your breaking the law, and I'm going to call the police if you don't immediately put that out..!" It was very humiliating. For my whole life I have been a law abiding citizen, and a day later I was a criminal. It was obvious the cashier wanted to have authority over some one, and couldn't wait for the chance to use it. It appears today that there will be more laws, and more laws that will effect everyone. ugh..!

    • @joeandtell
      @joeandtell  24 дня назад

      Sorry that it had to be such a scene. Seems an odd situation to “warrant” such a reaction. A classmate of mine in high school took out a cigarette in art class and almost lit it before he realized what he was doing. Fortunately, no one else saw what he was doing.

    I think it was 1995 or 1996. We were on holiday in Greece and were on the beach. It wasn't very busy. So I lit a pipe. After I received a few compliments about the smell, the longer we stayed I also received angry looks about the fact that I smoked there. While there was still plenty of smoking back then.
    Since we are becoming a “dying breed” in the new non-smoking generation, I think resistance will increase. Greetings from the Netherlands 👋

    I got in a hit and run a few years back. I had been smoking my pipe earlier that day in my truck. I phoned into the local police department to report it. When they arrived the 1st thing the cop said to me is "how much weed do you have in your vehicle"? I started laughing and remarked that I had absolutely no weed in my truck. He ran my plates and saw that I had a clean record. Then he came back to my truck, handed me my id and insurance, and said that he was just joking about the weed because it's legal in the state I live in. Ridiculous! Sorry you had to put up with that. The world would be a better place with more pipe smokers in it.

    Thats kinda embarrassing.
    I dont remember getting in trouble in public but i have had people fake cough in my direction when they saw i had a pipe in my mouth. On both occasions, what they didn't realize was that the pipe was empty and there wasn't any smoke for them to be coughing about 😂
    Im also pretty sure I've been pulled over on the suspicion of smoking weed. I wasn't smoking weed, but i was smoking very small pipes. Both times, the officers suggested that they smelled weed smoke and asked if i had any in the car. Nope. No traffic violations were mentioned, and i left without a ticket. Pretty sure it was the pipe.

    Interesting topic. As much as I would like to smoke my pipe in more places, I do worry about offending people. Most likely, because marijuana is becoming more and more prevalant, I absolutely hate the smell of weed and cigarette smoke, and I know I definitely would be avoiding them or telling them if they were smoking in a bad area. So, I guess I have to have the same respect for people who don't like pipe smoking, few though they may be. I have only taken a walk in the local outdoor arboretum and nobody seemed to mind there, so I will take it slow in trying to be around other people when I smoke. Thanks for the topic and happy piping!

    Pipe smoking has got to be the LEAST of the unhealthy vices out there. Obesity takes off 10-15 years of a person's life...but how many people get scolded for walking out of a McDonald's? And marijuana is far worse, even though the younger generations love it. Studies show that marijuana smoke contain up to 20X the amount of carcinogens as tobacco smoke--hence the uncontrollable hacking cough.
