I can't think of many noises in life that make me smile like a two stroke Detroit rowing through gears and then Jake braking on high.
Almost better than a Sunday church choir.
I worked on a many of them… back in the day! I totally agree with what U say 👍😁‼️
I love a Detroit, but I like a big Kawasaki inline 4 with a Kerker pipe at about 9000 in second gear too.
I love that Cannonball GMC with sleeper, a classic old school semi.
Just listening to the soundtrack of this video reminds me of Maximum Overdrive. Especially the part when they are circling the truck stop.
Exactly🤠👍
Same , kick ass movie and AC/DC Ain't bad either . Lol
Best of all time
Hahahaha
God that movie messed me up as a child. I love it
Noting like the sound of an old 2 stroke Detroit. The older drivers I used to know would tell me when you drove one of those old Detroit's "slam your hand in the door and drive like your mad at at it".
That's the kind of music that helped build America!!
My 87 International Eagle had an 8V92TA Silver Series in it on a 15 speed it was a dump with pony set up loved it especially when you put the jakes on loaded.
There's nothin' like the sound of an old Detroit!!
I totally agree with you mister.
Jeff Grier absolutely nothing
Yeah!
Even at an idol those old Detroit’s sounded pissed and angry, and mean
Idle not Idol. You shall not worship false Idols! LOL
That crew cab fire truck is so amazing.
Nice! That flatbed Studebaker was a garbage truck at one point.
This video needs a heart button
My 1st truck was a 238 Detroit 6/71 with a 16 spd SPICER trans. We also had a 318 Detroit so I've always loved them, That sound & the sound of a early Harley shovelhead
Donald Bartram was that 16 sp Spicer trans like a Mack with a single gearstick and a range switch that slides across 4 positions that's what they had in a Australia.
A harley is a 4 stroke and your detroit is a 2 stroke! 2 different animals there unless you converted a harley v-twin into a 2 stroke which has been done before.
An International, *conventional cab* tiller fire truck? With a Detroit? What a fucking unicorn! Awesome.
Thanks for sharing. I put a lot of miles/hours in an Astro with an 8v92. Love the sound!
Loved the Astros!
You wouldnt happen to have any pictures would you? When I was a kid my dad drove for a small outfit owned by a guy that started out back in the late 40s after the war. Real old school bandit. I remember my dad and I in the yard one morning hooking up to this old red steel flat bed with a wooden deck, and my dad sees that its unregistered, owner walks by an dad tells him that its unregistered, the guy picked up a hand full of mud, smeared it around an said your good lol. But he had NICE trucks, an always took real good care of my dad. One of the trucks my dad drove of his for along time was an astro. It was an owner operator spec, white and blue. I think it was the last year of the small grill. Super sharp, but I only have one picture of it and I cant see all of it. It was taken the day the truck was bought and there is a sibling to it next to it but it doesnt have all the nicer featuers that the owner op spec truck had like polished round tanks, longer wheelbase, polished ladder an steps, aluminum wheels, the other one next to it only had datons but has the same paint job.
These Detroits kept America rolling all those years. Awesome sound.
Awesome Post! Nothing Like the Sound of a Screaming Detroit! 👍🏻👍🏻
Whether it’s a Detroit or anything 2 cycle with castrol pre mix. The sound and smell is great 👍
Gee I'm in my teens, and I need one of these. Best sounding diesel out there.
DAMN STRAIGHT BORTHER
and then the boomers said "but surley they dont have the ability to drive a stick they are dumbasses"
then i came up out of left field screaming while im drifting my old 2 stroke detroit with twin stick " YEAH I BET I CANT DRIVE A STICK"
boomers: excuse me what the fuck, why the fuck are you driving a old truck those are reserved for the old folks"
me: well you dumbasses aint getin yonger and you only getin dumber and you dont know how to apreciate a good sounding engine"
Catapiller is the best diesel sound it has that deep roar but a detroit has a destinct sound i think everybody needs one
@@djaydeved
You show your ignorance when you have to put down others, but you are correct young man
Thanks for compiling this, your vids are always enjoyable. Really liked that Brockway and the International at 1:55.
Wow! That IH crew cab hook and ladder was awesome. Great video.
They sound like they're hitting 7000 RPM
You hear em screaming down the road before you see them. Then when they finally come into view they're only doing 25mph 😂
I had a hard time getting use to my 1200 rpm series 60 coming from my 8 v 71 at 22 to 2300 rpms. I sure miss that sound. But honestly how many of us that drove them, griped about them?
@@howardgroover1343
I drove an old cracker box, 6-71 , it made lots of noise, but it got old in a hurry and I didn't have to shut the door on my hand, to be mad at it though
I'm In Australia love 8 71 Jimmy would love to work one of these some day
My first Detroit was a 238, 6cyd, in a 1964 Emeryville. 10spd, with 9th and 10th reversed. The old girl was long legged, but you could toss a football out in front of her, and you'd have to shift three times to get over it. Backed into a dock too hard one time, and it started running in reverse. Smoke scared the hell outta me, 'till a old man came over and told me to just turn it off, and restart it.😁
Love seeing trucks in action, especially some of the cabovers.
Detroit Diesel: Turning diesel #2 into NOISE and POWER.
E.F. Shea’s 1956 GMC 900 with a 6V92 is probably my favorite "all time" truck i've seen over the years on these show videos. God, i'd love to buy that offa him.
was it that red one at 1:00? nevermind, I found it at 2:59, beautiful
Aren't you talking about 6-71?92 series came out in the 80ish.
@@deanalexander1029
The 6V92 first came out in 1974 so either it was a 6V71, or someone put the 92 series in later
Great job on the video👍🏻
Great video,I trucked in the seventies and forgot home much I missed the Detroit music to my ears sound
Aaaaaah.....the music of my people.
Beautiful trucks with a beautiful heartbeat to match
Augh god that 9500 at 4:06 is just... mouth watering! Dream Truck!
12v71 brockway is my favorite
Rocky Mountain Hummingbird!
Nothing like the sound of a Detroit! Braap braaap. I used to lie awake at night listening to the detroit powered trucks gear down 4 or 5 times climbing up the hill on 41N going out out of Springfield, TN. Sweet lullaby!
It's a shame we can't have gatherings to see and appreciate these trucks a y more
It's kind of a shame that today's younger drivers will never have the experience of flogging a Detroit and the "drive it like you stole it" mentality that went with the territory.
Yea, I know what you mean.. My 1st job was hauling concrete block on a 10wheel Dodge CNT 900 (All we had were Dodges,,1/2 238 Detroits, 1/2 230 Cummins) We never even strapped the loads down. LOL, Try that today. Also had a 318 Detroit in a dodge tractor / dump trailer. Would always run overloaded,, like 90K or more out of the sand pit. No scale there, especially if it was a rainy week we'd be way over. @70 Cummins in a dodge tri-axle dump
Cummins 220s and Mack Thermodynes were just the same. Slam your hand in the door 3 times to get mad enough to drive and stand on the governor until you got out of the cab at night.
P
Had a Thermodyne in a 65 R model with a quad box,, hauling a trailer dump up hills in Ct.. LOL I'd look behind me as I went up the hills at the line of cars behind me & no where for them to pass.
If you had a 5x4 behind the Cummins you sometimes had to slam your hand 4 times so you wouldn't miss a shift. Strangely enough, I miss those days.
Awesome Machines & Video Man
These trucks are sooooo sweet I love the soundtrack , the eye candy isn't bad either I got goosebumps !! Love love
I thought there wouldve been more Brockways !
Love the Detroit sound. In a truck, boat, generator, or what have you . From a2-71, to 16V149, they all make music for me.
Fantastic compilation of GM Detroit diesel powered RIGS! One of the different one's was the light metallic blue and white International Translate! As many Detroit diesel powered RIGS had dual diesel exhaust pipes. This beautiful RIGS with the van trailer in the 7th clip 9nly had 1! Making one to think while it's sitting. It probably has a Cummins 6. But nope! A GM Detroit diesel breathes beneath it's cab!
Rick Delair YEP! No doubt it was a 318 V8! It sounded totally Awesome!
Good lord that second KW is goals
Eargasm !! Lovely sound.
Never heard that word before, but that's perfect !
Great post SIR
SHEA construction at 3:00 still has one of these up in MA. Have actually seen and worked on their new Pete's, some beautifully spec's on them gotta say
Gholf cart with detroit?
Now you only hear in boats and old heavy equip
David Mccully im looking at doing. A 6v71 or a a 453t conversion in a old chevy pick up.
International paystar was sweet!
All these trucks were amazing!! Detroit Diesels are my favorite! Where was this show?
This was from the 2018 ATHS national show in Lexington, KY. It moves around each year. Heading to Reno next year.
They may wet stack without a load, drip oil, etc. but man, everyone wants to hear a Detroit grab that next gear!
Good ol’ screamin detroit
Love it
Coolest one by far was the rounded red one at the beginning.
Screamin D's. You can always tell when they are low on oil, when they are not leaking
It makes me sad when people rip on the Detroits for leaking oil. My father has an early 2000s Peterbilt with a CAT engine. In the last 70K miles that thing has needed to be half-rebuilt at least 3 times due to oil leaks.
Most dont really "leak" 95% of the time its the exhaust sweating because of unburnt fuel going down the exhaust you either gotta hold those engines to the rug or not at all i have a 3-53 in a 1979 timberjack 230 forwarder that "leaked" when we bought it after a week of running it close to full throttle it stopped.
It's a two stroke baby!! They are made to leak!!!
Sucks the front of that black kw was smashed up😓😓 Awsome video
Thrilling!👍🇺🇸👍
I have loved the music of gifted men like Coltrane, Dolphy , Holdsworth , and Hendrix, among many others, for almost five decades now. But with all due respect to my musical heroes, both living, and deceased, their music ALL pales in comparison to the wild, passionate, and uninhibited cry of the TWO - STROKE, GM, DETROIT DIESEL ! The wonderful and marvellously unique and recognizable tones put out by these motors bode back to a sadly bygone era. A far better time to be living in the United States Of America. JIMMY JAMES.
How does a women know about truck engines? cheers from Australia.
It's a 6V92T in the IH S-line fire truck.
Never heard a buzzin dozen with the Jakes on,,,,
Ni en video! Do you hace more footage of the international firetruck ladder?
For some strange reason, I never liked to a DD engine in a Brockway. I much preferred the sound of a Cummins in those trucks. That Being said, there is nothing, I repeat nothing like the sound of an 8V71, linked to a 4 speed Spicer hung on the rear of a Greyhound Scenicruiser , at speed.
Imagine there was a huge big rig parade and then the rhea M comet from maximum overdrive came into affect
Transtar was always a sharp looking truck.
Как прекрасно они звучат!
I do anything to have a GMC like Shea’s!
What kinda chevy was that at 4:08, I must meet her! (the truck)
If any of you drove a truck back when Detroits were popular you probably wouldn't be enthusiastic about them. Cabs were poorly insulated, air conditioning was rare, you'd be deaf by the end of the day. I drove GMC J9500s, GMC Brigadiers, and even a Hendrickson, all with Detroits. My ears are still ringing.
They sound like an old bus
Look ma!! No fricken computers!!! Lol!!
OMG OMG OMG A Studebaker!!! Oh no, a second Studie. With a Detroit!!! Life is good! OK, does anyone know if there was NOT a truck brand that offered a Detroit at one time or another?
Ce son des moteurs, Ils me font penser au film américain.
The best.
Does anyone know where the name Detroit Diesel came from? It was coined by I-H from where it was made Detroit, Michigan. At one time they were known as G.M. diesel. The 'Big Three' Ford,Dodge, GMC made big rigs along w/ Brockway, Mack, Freightliner, KW, Pete, etc. How would it look having a G.M. diesel in say a competitor's truck like a FORD? This is the reasoning with Allis-Chalmers who competed with G.M. Euclid division. The Buda engine comp. was aquired to di- vest the A-C earth- moving div. from using a competitor power unit.
i wish we had these trucks in england. the closest thing i think we got was the foden FD6 supercharged inline 6 cylinder 2 stroke
I'm sure it's not a big deal to import one. ;)
You folks probably had a few Bedfords that had Detroit Diesels.
@@ClassicTVMan1981X Yes Bedford TM with the v6 detroit but not at all popular in the UK as no one knew how to drive them properly .
ClassicTVman1981xxx The poms had 6V53s in the old bedfords and 6v and 8v71 in TM range with a few 92 series thrown in later on. The advertisement for these Detroit powered trucks said ''These vehicles can cover immense distances at speed'' . But sadly the poms couldn't take advantage of a more modern truck with comfort and power. They were simply too stubborn. It wasn't their style of driving.
Lovely LoVELY LOVELY!
Only thing i get apoplectic over seeing a Glorious MACK BULLDOG, (SUPER LINER at that!)
with a screamer AKA Appalachian hummingbird under its hood- never could, never will know why- MACK built all its own parts
(Gold/bronze Bulldog on hood indicated this, correct my good guys?) which is/was similar to GMC in its truck heyday) and the BULLDOG diesel WENT ALL THE WAY UP TO 8cyl / 500 HP back then, if i am correct (I dont know too much about rigs, so pls correct this old soul if he's wrong, lol)it just bothers me that While not always the MOST powerful, Mack engines were always the toughest and the longest lasting-there are in fact records that prove this-This I just found out recently- and that made what I always believed inherently a fact of life.
So kindred souls- whats the reason- a style thing? (They like the scream instead of the growl?) I just cant figure it out- its like putting 🐴 in a pigs 🐖 pen- to put it all farm like.. lol
Some people have to be different just for the sake of being different.
I'm in that video. A 3:38 that is my 1973 international fleetstar
That's a great truck you have!
It seems the shifters were removed from most of these trucks.
Well 10-4 back door, put the peddle to the metal what'ch ya wait'n for.
That old White can't stay in sight, gona leave ya here and say no more.
Hang on Where's the 149 Series !
WE NEED VOLUME III
It's in the works!
Those old Detroit's made American
My first Truck Driving job my Dad gave me a 238 Detroit with a 10 SPD Behind it. Drove to many other to remember. Sure wish I had what appears to be a V-4 Detroit in the small straight Truck. 4-53 cubic inch. I drove 31 yrs. 1988 Detroit Bought John Deere the EPA stopped production of the 2 Stroke Diesel Engines. The John Deere 4 stroke were farm Tractor Engines. Very simple but reliable. I drove 1 of them
1 & 1/2 Million miles that's 1500 Thousand Miles before they sold it.
Hope someone enjoys reading about these Great American Engines
The E F SHEA truck was awesome
Nirvana
4:17 lol
That golf cart sounds fucking *amazing*
Not one Jake brake
Man these great engines don't know nothing about ECM EGR DEF Regenerations SCR High fuel rail PCV etc. Like man these engines gesh if only they would come back man talking about reliability at his finest!
Rick Delair Are you kidding? A 238 out perform a 600 hp Cat?
Not smoke? What have you been smoking?
This is one of the funniest posts I've ever read.
What was the blue truck?
We're you referring to the metallic blue flatbread?! That was a 1959 or 60 Studebaker!
Tom Ok you might wanna see my Studebakers!
They sound angry but they weren't exactly powerful. Old timer told me once, "2 stroke detroit is like a woman, all scream and no put out", lol.
Would a 8V71 run on a filtered waste oil and veg oil mix? Just asking.
Arjan Wilbie I read a story once where a farmer in America had a 50/50 mix of diesel and corn oil and ran it in a truck with a 4-71 in it. Probably a GMC tray top or body truck.
u guys known any great mechanic for ah 16v92 twin turbo to re build?
I 'm a Cummins person. The sounds of inline-six are the best.
私はカミンズ派です.直6の音が最高
Wow! I can buy shit at a parts store for free? Amazing#
Watching these trucks put put by the camera was one of the least satifying things I've ever watched.
You must be a winging POM
It's bad sound ,like wtf almost like it is petrol engine without exhaust .....
I don`t understand why you sold the company to the Germman MTU....????? They only makes Shit. from Denmark-Alpha Diesel was also sold to the Germans MAN....So sorry good old Danish workman shift.......
The only thing more anyoying than a Harley Davidsion .. Detroits were always under pwoered.. instead of a 6-71 there should have been a V-71 and instead of a V-8 there should have been a V-12 an 8-V-92 seemed to have a lot of power until you got to the bottom of Hill .. not much torque .. the Trubos helped to keep the noise down too ..
Они 2-х тактные что ли?
The 1 GMC sounded better
Detroits never did the work, the gear ratios did.... All the detroit had to do was not blow up, which is was great for not doing so.
