Ride along with Russell and I as we check out a 1972 Brockway U360 with a 12V71 Detroit Diesel heading to the Brockway Museum. www.dailydieseldose.com for more!
+Donald Bartram..... GREAT "Combo" !! Were you running the 8616 with 2 sticks or the newer "air" 4X4 ?? I had a 69 Pete (ext. hood 359) with a 12V that I "built" as well as 2 ext. hood "A" model KW's (1974 and 1981) with 12V's that I also "built" (as in, fully balanced, and in "excess" of 840 hp under full load on the dyno @ 2,480 rpm) as an owner operator (with own authority). Most any DD with "sticks" was a great setup..... but that Spicer 8616 with it's even 6% split between all the gears was "perfect" with no waiting between any of the shifts.... even the splits. Unfortunately, the 8616 compound box was just not strong enough to handle the torque (in those days) of the 12's, even "stock". I ran dbl OD 6X4's and 44,000 lb Mack rears in mine as I was doing lots of Specialized Heavy Haul.... all the way as far north as Yellowknife in the NW Territories of Canada.
What nice Tractors , WOW , LOTS of time invested in those trucks . where is the Brockway Museum ? Is it off the Island ? I used to live in Mineola , I am now in Western NY . A LITTLE different !! LOL , great video , stay safe , bob k
+Robert Kavich Brockway Museum is part of the Central New York Living History Museum, in Homer, NY, right outside of Cortland. Stop on by, so much too see.
I would say so. I'm glad I had my digital recorder with me that afternoon because I've got a great recording of it now. I'm going to try to go down to the firehouse at some point to see if I can get a video with it.
You see you can bob tail em around and its OK but when they have work behind them heavy work they really sing out ..that's when you really hear the Detroit sing ..
Sounds like it could be in an Indy car, a 2 stroke sounds like hi rpm but it revs no higher than anthing else. At KX500 tops at 6800 rpm 67hp while a YZF455 4 stroke is 48hp at 11000, The 2 stroke can make much more power at lower rpm, most 4 stroke rev a lot higher than 2 strokes.
GREAT Video and thanks for sharing it with us all "out here". The sweet sound of a good running Detroit - brings to mind, the irony and Hypocrisy of the government that "shut down" the manufacture of these great engines.... yet, to this day is Still having the 6V53T(and TA), 8V71T/TA and 8V92T/TA and TTA's produced under Military And Gov't contracts for their own use and for sale to other countries for military use. HYPOCRITES !!!!
In the land of Prius, let the Detroit sing the song of its people
+TheNyarcangel In 2 Stroke we trust.
Lol!! Amen bro!! The sound of yesteryear!!!
One of the ncest Brockways I've ever seen Mydad drove one for Mobil, I drove a tri-axle for a dump truck co, back in the 70's
I remember listening to the 8v71 I use to drive all day long what a great sound. Love the view from the cab & the idle sound
Americana at its finest!

Listen to that Detroit scream
Where is this ?
Recently I discovered that there is a fire truck at my fire station it's got a 12 V 71 in it and it's a squad truck.
+Alex Williamson'sadventures That's a big discovery!

Would've been really cool to see that thing hauling the other Brock instead of the Pete!
+Kenneth Pittman It was considered for at least a few seconds.
