    Michael Rodd was one of the best of broadcasters we ever had. He never seemed to get the recognition he deserved.
    Always a consummate professional: Michael was up there along with Frank Bough and Mike Neville.

    You don't realise how beautiful these cars look. Seeing them around on occasions make you think why did they come to a end .. faultless body shape.

    He says the Capri was design to be a Capri, completely ignoring the fact that ford started with a Cortina as an underpinning base and then tried to make a Mustang of it. The cost compromise that had to be made resulted in a car which was unique, but an unintended consequence of cost savings.

      Caprifreak Definitely. Probably not long after the terrible 1977 air disaster as well.
      I was there in 1983- would have loved a 3.0 Capri as a hired car. We were stuck with a terribly underpowered Renault 4! I drove on those sands near Teide as a 10 year old though!

    I had a 3.0s and even in dry weather the back end would slip going round tight corners if I went in a bit too quick. I had to be very careful. Wet roads were even worse. Mine was an ex-police car (you could just make out the remains of the orange stripe round the door handles). Don't know if it's true but I heard other owners used to but bags of cement in the back to help with road-holding! That V6 engine sure did sound nice though....:)

      That's why the Police stopped using them, they had to put a bag of cement in the boot to keep it on the road.

      I have a 3.0 and i can't understand it mine handles just fine even in the wet, no sliding about in any way.

      paul greenwood Ah the joy of a solid axle on cart springs !. Mine was a 79 1600 so it wasn't powerful enough to get me into any real trouble . Wonderfully comfortable on long journeys .

      MY 2.8i with LSD was a hooligan in the wet.. Used to snap sideways, scaring the crap out of me!

      I know what you mean. I had six capri's all mk3's, the 2.8 special I had was a bit if a handful especially in second gear. I had a 2.0S with 3 litre struts and cart springs that bounced around all over the place. The weight distribution was hardly bmw class lol but I didn't mind living life on the edge especially in the rain. By the time I got to work I was fizzing😂 great cars, easy on the wallet and easy to fix.

    good vid. just cleaned the points on one there, the other week, havent worked on one for about 25 years,[ my ford capri wont start you tube], still a nice motor to drive, a real bird puller in their day,

    Many thanks for this review👍! I owned a 3.0S Essex as my 2nd car. Of course, I missed to invest in a 3rd party oil cooler. So, ouch I destroyed the 3.0 Essex at German highspeed Autobahn. It was already the 2nd engine 😖.

    My dad had a very early mark 3 on a S plate as a company car it was a 2.0s with ithe tennis racket head restraints. I think the colour was known as fjord blue iirc. Our neighbour had a signal orange 3.0s

    I suppose this was Ford UK's only real attempt at a sporty 2 door coupe. Ok at the
    time it didn't have much competition. And, with Bodie and Doyle of the "Proffessionals" both driving around in them, I suppose that made them cool. But
    the Yanks had the Mustang and other sporty cars to choose from. I went to LA in
    1981 and saw quite a few Capri's out there, so they must have been quite popular
    out there aswell as over here.

      In America they were sold under the Mercury name. They also had sealed beam headlights and 5 mph bumpers.

      Will Poundstone Well, it does not surprise me that they were sold under the
      Mercury brand, because wasn't Mercury a division of Ford in America, just as
      Lincoln is the luxury car division of the Ford Motor Company in the USA.

      +Gary Dunn Later on there was the Probe (1993 - 97), and the Cougar (1998 - 02), and coupes had something of a revival in the late 90s, but these types of cars only really did well before "hot hatches" became a thing.

      +BritishCommentWriter Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the Probe designed and built in the USA? So, it was not really a true European2 door coupe.

    Ok, so the Capri wasn’t a coupe version of an existing saloon / sedan, but there was no denying that floor pan, and all running gear with the exception of steering was Cortina, I remember people glibly calling them re-bodied Cortinas - they looked far better than they actually drove - like most Fords!

      I’m sorry to hear that Craig, we had capris five altogether but I just managed to survive mine, had a few close shaves and one pretty bad accident going right through a hedge and rolling it, road WAS wet!

    Mk3 Capri had a production run of nine years, with the greatest number of sales in Britain, hence why LHD examples were discontinued two years earlier, though by then the range was reduced to Laser & Injection. Once had a 2-litre Laser. Good to drive, good performance but a little bit "tail-happy" on damp surfaces.

    You can even see how bad the handling is on the road going up through the bends on this one. I bought a 20 S in the early 90's. I thought they were kind of cool but sold it after 6 months. Never felt safe in it, and it drank petrol. Bought a white 85 XR3i instead, and still have it as a weekend car. Been offered crazy money for it but while it's still going up in value, not selling. 😊

    Gold 2ltre GL cut sunroof outta older one in scrap yard had it put in GL fun to drive reasonably quik too drove all over ENGLAND in it back then..

      You PUT a sunroof in your car?. You cut into the structural rigidity of a bodyshell after it left the factory, to PUT in a sunroof previously fitted to a scrap car?. What a lot of NONSENSE you type.

    I had two of these. I thought they were good at the time but I hadn't experienced other makes. Looking back, they were poorly made with terrible handling. By the way, I think that girl was shouting "slow the f down!". See how quickly she got out.

    it wasn't a Launch of a new Model Capri..
    It was a Facelift of the Capri II ..
    remember the Capri of 1968-1972 ?? When that was facelifted for the 1973/74 years, it was just that, a Facelift..
    People dont call the Facelift Capri a new marque, it isnt its just a facelift Capri ..
    Well that is exactly the same for the Capri II in 1978.. even kept the chassis identity - GECP - year of introduction 1974

    1:01 LOL! The name itself was derived from something else...Capri Consul, which was a far more handsome car. It also inherited this cars ability to rust in a very short time.
