    Pronunciation is Bu-cepha-landra. The name derives from Bucephalus, who was Alexander the Great's horse. The horse was black with a large head, like an ox. In ancient greek, Bu (Ox) Cephalus (Headed).

      Brownie ghost was the first specie that I purchased costing me a portion of a fortune when bucephalandra first hit the states. I've become very concerned for the species that are sold since then because there are multiple species with different names that almost identically resembles another under certain light and co2 conditions. I've been amazed at how many new names are made in the last 2 years alone. For this reason, I've decided to not purchase anymore bucephalandra species because I've already have a collection that suffices my needs.

      Could you share tips on growing these buce such as ... is there any specific temperature to keep at or avoid not to go over ... any specific fertilizers that could boost their growth or any ferts to avoid that could melt them or something ?
      It'd be great to hear from you since you have years of experience :)

    • @KrispyAquascape
      @KrispyAquascape  7 лет назад +2

      In my opinion, temperature doesn't really matter but I've never kept them in temperatures warmer than room temperature. I don't keep any heaters with any of my tanks that has buce because I've been pairing these plants with shrimps. My AC in the home is set at 70 degrees but my room is usually around 72-78. I have been waiting to hear how these plants would do with discuss tanks that almost always have water temperatures in excess of 80 degrees. I have yet to test the low and high temperament capabilities of these plants. My shrimp tanks have ADA Amazonia Aquasoil and i don't fertilize but i feel like these plants wouldn't benefit off of water column dosing much. Since these plants grow slow anyways, even if there is a surplus of nutrients the anatomy of the plant itself will restrict rapid growth. The perfect environment for these plants are to be attached to a rock located within a small creek stream where water flows just below the leaves but above the rhizome. In a rocky creek stream, the only time that an abundance of nutrients is provided is when it rains and the water collects nutrients from the surrounding dirt. The staple for the plant are basic minerals found in almost any type of body of water that is connected to creek streams. Co2 would be the only way that the plant can grow just a little bit faster in an aquarium. I haven't try using flourish excel with bucephalandra yet because my tanks at the moment are all low techs. I believe that growth rate changes would be very minimal too as well and i would love to know how they would react to the liquid too as far as melting goes.

      Truly appreciate your sharings Krispy!
      I hope all my new buce grows healthy and beautiful soon as it's covered by some kind of brownish color which I always cause disturbance in my previous planted tank. Hoping to have a video on my buce as soon as they recover with its best looking.
      Cheers KrispyAquascape!

      So you didn't put seeds to grow you purchased grass. I'm only asking because I saw some on eBay grass seeds. It says to put seeds 1 inch under the soil then fill water just over and let sit for 10 days or growth first so the seeds won't float

      The eBay seeds and the Micranthemum monte carlos inside my tank are two completely different plant species. I have no experience with the eBay seeds.

      Been waiting for this for a long time. They should raid the bucephalandra farms too where tens of thousands are being kept. Nothing worst than depleting the resources in the wild for someone else’s personal benefit.

      What are your water parameters. Much appreciated if you could share the information. What nutrients do you use? Thank you very much.

    • @KrispyAquascape
      @KrispyAquascape  6 лет назад +3

      The ph on my tap water is around 6.5-6.7, it’s a little acidic and I don’t test them for gh and kh. I use ada Amazonia aquasoil so the plants pretty much gets all its nutrients from the soil or the water column. I don’t fertilize at all and use seiryu stones to compensate for the acidifying effect of the ada soil. The aquasoil will slowly acidify the water column makin it softer, the stones will slowly harden the water column by releasing calcium. In theory by using both, I wouldn’t need to do water changes every week because both are buffing the water column canceling each other out so the water can sustain a more stable condition over extended periods of time without doing water changes. Based on my low stock I did a water change every 3rd or fourth week on this tank. Bucephalandras aren’t picky feeders. They are master survivalist just like most rhizome plants that are able to live on rocks above water and get all its nutrients from the water stream below it. If bucephalandras are your main stock of plants, I recommend not fertilizing your tank if you are using any aquasoil substrate that is high in nutrients. If bucephalandras are your main stock and you aren’t using aquasoil, I recommend dosing 1/4th of the ei fertilizing method. Bucephalandras grow slow and does not consume nutrients in a timely manner. Unless you have a lot of other stem plants that can grow fast in the same tank with your bucephalandras, I would be against excessively fertilizing your tank.
