Should we embrace cosmetic transformation as a way of becoming closer to who we really are, or who we might wish to become?
We think being authentic is about remaining true to who we are, and many of us consider plastic surgery as a the preserve of tabloid celebritis rather than people like us. But from Caitlin Jenner to Chelsea Manning, plastic surgery is now seen as a means to ensure our bodies reflect authentic inner lives. Should we embrace cosmetic transformation as a way of becoming closer to who we really are, or who we might wish to become? Or should we be seeking to end society's obsession with appearance?
Julia Long: Dr Julia Long is a radical lesbian feminist activist and the author of Anti-Porn: The Resurgence of Anti-Pornography Feminism
Heather Peto: Heather Peto is trans activist and 2017 Labour parliamentary candidate for Rutland and Melton.
Miles Berry: Miles Berry is an aesthetic surgeon and one of the field leaders in reconstructive surgery. His expertise is in abdominoplasty, breast augmentation, face lift, blepharoplasty, mastopexy, breast reduction, secondary breast surgery, liposuction, labiaplasty and transgender surgery, as well as a host of other non-surgical treatments.

If gender identity/trans activism is all about simply "allowing people to present as who they actually are", Heather Peto, why on earth would they need or require plastic surgery at all?

Actually, I read his body language as projecting some real disrespect to Julia. He keeps his large body turned toward the other two men even while Julia speaks, as if either .pretending she's not there and trying to shut her out of their little in-group.Although perhaps he's more insecure than anything (perhaps), in the end his behavior is just really quite rude.

How can waring makeup be empowering?? When it does, you bought into the lie that you are not good enough without it smeared on your face. You believe you need to be altered to more acceptable by society. I don’t wear makeup, and that is accepting of oneself and is also very freeing; saves a lot of time and money too, that I can spend on things I think are more important to me. I guess I have an different idea of what empowering is.i think self acceptance is more empowering than the angst of not being good enough without makeup on.

I don't question whether I am my authentic self. I am simply me. I had a breast reduction 20 yrs ago, not to be my authentic self, but because my very real DD cup breasts were too large for my frame, physically uncomfortable, and required that nearly every dress I wore be subject to an expensive alteration at the tailor to fit. The resulting smaller breasts (my surgeon was a woman) didn't make me more authentic, just happier because my life was easier in every respect. Having a breast reduction was never about self acceptance; it was about being able to buy a $15 bra at Walgreen as opposed to an $80 chest harness at Macy's. I wanted to be able to go on a 10 miles run without developing friction burns on the underside of my breast and to be able to sleep at night without having to adjust my breast every time I turn over.

It dosent matter what you do to your body but to try and force everyone to co-sign and change the narrative of your own body dysmorphia into demanding we accept it is a huge endeavor. Wouldn’t it be easier to for an individual to take the hormones that match your genitalia, to accept the body you were born with as is. This is just sad, i cant help but feel that what the trans community wants is for everyone to accept their body dysmorphia it is so wrong in so many ways
