4:10 "You're not gonna need a huge portion of this." Look here, Ebbrell. I'll thank you not to tell me how to live my life. If I want to die of a diabetic coma, let it be with a chocolate smile across my lips.
Oh no, you've let the secret out! This is a pudding I've been making for as long as I can remember (although without the hazelnuts). If you can't be bothered to boil the sauce on the stove at the end, what you can do instead is just mix the cocoa and brown sugar together and sprinkle on the top, the pour the boiling water over the back of a spoon so it doesn't make holes in the pudding. Works just as well :)
I have a recipe that came down from my grandmother for something very similar, we called it Mystery Mocha Cake and Gooey Cake as it had double strength coffee in the liquid part. Sooo good. The hazelnut version sounds incredible.
I got so excited when I saw this recipe whilst simultaneously blowing on my hot chocolate to cool it down that I blew too hard and burnt my fingers... Completely worth it.
This is a very popular and common recipe. I've been surprised at how ubiquitous it is in New Zealand. I even have a slow cooker version (not to mention non-chocolate versions starring caramel or lemon).
We usually add the sauce first then drip the cake mixture over it and then drop in a few teaspoons of butter randomly for best results. /edit and we usually use a larger pan spreading it out a bit (much thinner)
My mum makes an amazing, but simpler version of a self saucing pudding. She makes a normal chocolate sponge, then sprinkles and generous mix of sugar and cocoa powder on top of the uncooked sponge. After a generous amount of boiling water. It's amazing.
My gran, born in the late 1800s, passed this recipe down as 'Chocolate Upside-down Cake'. It is good on its own, better with any ice cream, unbelievable with coffee ice cream and a dash of Kahlua!
I've done a lemon self-saucing with a (slightly different method) and the lemon tartness + the sweetness is a winning combo. The chocolate + hazelnut might have to be the next attempt.
I've made one of these types of puddings before, except the recipe I used, you pour strong black coffee over the top and that really heightens the chocolate flavour....these are dangerously addictive, can't wait to try out your version, but will likely make it when I have a bunch of other people to share with as these are super indulgent
How awesome i just made this at school the other day. It's delicious! I had that moment where i thought things were gunna end badly but it turns out amazing!
"How can something so wrong, tastes so right?" Barry Taylor, 2015. Anyway, question time! (I think I'm always asking stuffs in each one of your videos, so please do pardon my level of knowledge.) What exactly is a 'pudding'? I'm always confused of what is defined as pudding because it seems like there are so many variant of it. In my country, what we commonly know as pudding is a jelly-like dessert that was made usually using milk (my personaly fav is the chocolate-flavoured pudding) and it's usually served with some kind of vanilla sauce. But like I said before, it seems like there are so many variant of what we can call as pudding. So please, enlighten me? Thank you! ^^
From my understanding, a pudding is a baked dessert, whereas a "dessert" is a cold one. For instance, ice cream is a dessert, but brownie would be more of a pudding. However, those terms can be used pretty much interchangeably now, so don't worry about them.
A few years ago I found a similar recipe in a cookbook full of chocolate recipes (sweet and savoury). Unfortunately I lost the recipe and could not find it for years! A few month ago I found the cookbook again, took a picture of it and made this chocolate fudge brownie sauce thing again and it was as delicious as i remembered it! It's basically chocolate-heaven!!!!! 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😋😌👌👌👌👌👌👏👏👏😊😊😊😊
Yup. For those across the pond: BHG Basic Cookbook: Brownie Pudding. The guys added their gourmet twist. Our family called this 'Mud'. It always freaked out visitors when mom would say Mud was for dessert.
I made this a few weeks ago, soooo good. The oven I baked it in heating things super unevenly but it was great, the corners were fudgy cake and the middles were the self-saucing pudding stuff it was supposed to be.
Loony I am one of those people unfortunately. I grew up without any grandparents, my mom doesn't cook or bake that often and I never heard of self saucing pudding until a few days ago. XD The weird thing is that I'm the only person who loves cooking more than anyone in the family and I've been told that I inherited that from my grandpa.
This is called a Denver Pudding. I have cookbook from the island of Tonga called Niu Ideas from 1977 that the mother of a former fiancee gave to me. Much simpler recipe but has more (American) pudding underneath. Brownie on top. You can use just water for plain chocolate or use coffee for mocha. You can do orange juice for chocolate/orange. Or grenadine for raspberry. The cookbook is available on Amazon.
This was one of the most delicious things I have ever made!! My little brother raved about it and wanted another one baked right away when it was gone. XD I had to substitute some things, but it was still great! Thank you guys so much!
Hey, I was just wondering if you had to substitute the brown sugar with white, by any chance? I don't have any brown sugar and it's hard to procure where I live. I was hoping it wouldn't alter the taste. Thanks in advance!
Dear sorted food. I want to say thank you, for puting so much effort into the videos probably more than we see I love watching old videos and new, they keep me going I'm so glad I found you all those years ago.please never stop!!! Yours sincerely viewer :)
This looks delicious and surprisingly simple, I'm very excited to make this! One questions, if you're allergic to nuts/just don't like them do you need to replace the hazelnut liquor with something else or can you just leave it out of the recipe all together?
you guys killed it with this pudding. the first thing that came to mind in the intro was a lava cake-like recipe, but this goes above and beyond. I will only do this when I get my hands on a hazelnut liquor. I simply love hazelnut. Question though, you can't taste the alchool right? Cause I realised my body rejects/hates alchool, I can't even have a sip.
Beatriz Corbetta Reis It does taste a bit of hazelnut liqueur as opposed to extract / flavouring so you'll get a very slight alcohol flavour. If you're not sure then you can definitely use extract!
Nice! I've done a similar thing with putting the sugars on top of the batter and pouring over just hot water, but I bet it's extra amazing (which would be impressive) with something yummier than water.
I don't usually like chocolate puddings/sauces when they're hot as I find them a little too claggy for my taste, but I might have to give this one a go!
Ben you are doing this the hard way. I have been making this for years with my grandma's recipe. It is soooo much easier. By the way if you really want this to be good you use hot coffee in place of the water at the end.
val cole I've done it for years by mixing dry cocoa, cornstarch and castor sugar and then sprinkling that on top of the sponge batter and then pouring hot water or hot coffee over the back of a spoon onto the 'sauce powder' and then baking it. The difference is that I've never put the liqueur in the liquid sauce bit - so I'll definitely try it this way.
I agree! One of the first recipes I learned as a kid. It is super simple and close to a dump cake. His way there isn't as much gooey at the bottom. Basicly hand MUX the batter right in the baking dish. Dump on the sugar and cocoa powder. Pour on your bowling water... add more water for a thinner sauce or less for more of a thick pudding.... This is an old Betty crocker recipe....
so good. It looks amazing! Just wondering, how much baking powder should you put in if the recipe calls for self raising and you only have all purpose?
This looks amazingly saucy :) I also just want to add how much I love your mixer! It is so beautiful and purple and amazing, so currently fangirling over it :P
This kinda feels like the chocolate version of pouding chômeur (a caramel pudding from Québec made with a brown sugar sponge and a caramel sauce). Looks amazing though!
U mentioned hazelnut liquor on the video but when I saw the ingredients, it wasn't listed to mix into the cake batter. :) so with or without? I need to try this!
my grandmother used to make this for my mom and her siblings for their birthdays. minus the nuts and liquor. my mom now makes it for mine. We call it Chocolate pudding cake. we eat it without the clotted cream.
Can't find clotted cream in US....very hard...but I'll make a homemade buttercream or whipped cream and add the vanilla bean! Awesome recipe and I will try!! :)
Heyy guys! AWESOME Video. :D I was wondering if we could replace the liquor with something non-alcoholic? Or maybe completely cut it out? LOVE LOVE LOVE you guys and your cooking!

The site changed, and the recipe didn't make the cut. :( Can you share the amounts of each ingredient?
Ben: "Grab the nuts."
Barry: *Looks confused
Barry: *Grab own nuts
I have a recipe that came down from my grandmother for something very similar, we called it Mystery Mocha Cake and Gooey Cake as it had double strength coffee in the liquid part. Sooo good. The hazelnut version sounds incredible.
If I don't want alcohol could I put a shot of milk in the sauce and two shots of milk in the batter??
+Erica Keegan Yep!
omg guys, that looks incredibly gooood. Love the hazelnut liquor in there
Well now I just want to eat that, but no time to bake, exams are here :( I'll try that recipe after my finals cause it just looks delicious !
***** sorry I'm not an object you can have just like that
Bigby Wolf google "30 sec self saucing pudding in a mug" by Domesblissity its my go to when I have no time.
***** bless your face
:D
Bigby Wolf isnt your profile name a game character?
I got so excited when I saw this recipe whilst simultaneously blowing on my hot chocolate to cool it down that I blew too hard and burnt my fingers...
Completely worth it.
😂

Ellen Spear *cough can i snag that lemon one? Im an addict
I tried this recipe on christmas eve. This is the warmest and delicious dessert today.
My mother makes something like this but with cloves as the main spice. It's so cozy in the winter!
Barry's face when Ben finishes plating this slice of heaven is priceless!
This recipe brings back memories of my childhood.
Made this today! Without the liquor. Loved it! It turned out great!
This is almost exactly ther same recipe my gran and her mom and her mom has used for ages. Definitely recommend anyone making this.
We usually add the sauce first then drip the cake mixture over it and then drop in a few teaspoons of butter randomly for best results. /edit and we usually use a larger pan spreading it out a bit (much thinner)

This is like the pudding of my dreams. I'm so glad you posted this when it's winter in Australia, because this is perfect for me!

Pudding is basically a just a British term for any type of desserts. x
lrnecdehy
Oh really? Whoa. Didn't know that. I guess you learn something new everyday. Hahaha. Thanks!

Any sweet that follows dinner is a pudding, hot or cold. We also have pies that we call pudding. Pudding/dessert mean the same thing here. :)
Barry's expressions while eating are always awesome, but his look of longing in this video was just the best
In Quebec (Canada), we use the same principle with a white cake and a maple sauce. It is called "pouding chômeur".
A few years ago I found a similar recipe in a cookbook full of chocolate recipes (sweet and savoury). Unfortunately I lost the recipe and could not find it for years! I feel like you guys need to do a parody video titled: "Grab Ya Nuts" ft. Ben Ebbrell and the "Oozy Bottoms"
Finally I can make that cake I craved from the local buffet
I had to pause before hitting share because I'm a bit breathless looking at that perfection.
my mum makes one of these with coffee and it's the best pudding ever
I can't believe there are people who haven't had self saucing pudding before! Nana made it all the time!
Loony I am one of those people unfortunately. I grew up without any grandparents, my mom doesn't cook or bake that often and I never heard of self saucing pudding until a few days ago. You are killing me... It looks faaaaantatic! YUM
We tried a similar recipe like this at school and instead of baking it we microwaved it! It also tastes really nice with coffee added too. :)
This was one of the most delicious things I have ever made!! My little brother raved about it and wanted another one baked right away when it was gone. XD I had to substitute some things, but it was still great! Thank you guys so much!
ilyalways101 Glad you enjoyed it :)

+TheSkitzogemini my guess it that white sugar is fine because my mom never bakes anything with brown sugar and i love her food
"How could something so wrong taste something so right." - oh I love that line though :))
Barry is ridiculously cute! This pudding looks amazing! :)
i absolutely love this! chocolaty, oozy and completely delicious!!
I've been making a variant of this recipe for years and it's awesome!
I thought it wasn't going to work. and I was doubting it THE WHOLE TIME. but it worked. this might be th best dessert I have ever made :) thank you
Great to hear. It's an classic!
Dear sorted food.
I want to say thank you, for puting so much effort into the videos probably more than we see I love watching old videos and new, they keep me going I'm so glad I found you all those years ago.please never stop!!!

im not much of a chocolate fan but that looks like heaven
"Trust me when it gets weird". I dunno why but I love this sentence
Nice! I've done a similar thing with putting the sugars on top of the batter and pouring over just hot water, but I bet it's extra amazing (which would be impressive) with something yummier than water.
This is so cool. I wish Ben went geeky and explained how it worked though, but I'm definitely making this
Just when I feel like I've seen it all--- WOW!
I've been doing this kind of pudding for years. Never occurred me to add hazelnut liqueur. I MUST!
I went wobbly in the knees just looking at the thumbnail. *drooling*
I don't usually like chocolate puddings/sauces when they're hot as I find them a little too claggy for my taste, but I might have to give this one a go!
やばいやばい...!絶対においしいやつ!
This tastes AMAZING!!! Great recipe thanx guys!
Is it possible to use Baileys instead od hazelnut liquor?
Gerrit Bechtold Oh yes, I've tried that too!
how did it turn out..?
No leftovers for today 😕😕 but I served it with whipped cream, since there is no clotted cream to buy here
OH.
Made my day so much better
Would you consider doing a series for students? With cheap ingredients and easy meals etc?
That looks incredible, I'll make sure to try it out soon:) but where I live there's no clotted cream so could you guys please post a recipe for it?
Ben you are doing this the hard way. I have been making this for years with my grandma's recipe. It is soooo much easier. By the way if you really want this to be good you use hot coffee in place of the water at the end.

so good. It looks amazing! Just wondering, how much baking powder should you put in if the recipe calls for self raising and you only have all purpose?
Sebastian Malton About 2 tsp per 150g of flour should work!
1:54 when a teacher looks at me while I wasn't paying attention and asks a question
"Me?"
a lime sorbet would be awesome with this awesome dessert

I also just want to add how much I love your mixer! It is so beautiful and purple and amazing, so currently fangirling over it :P
Just when im starting my health kick thanks Sorted!
Totally delicious will try to make it greetings from Tijuana Mexico! 😄
This kinda feels like the chocolate version of pouding chômeur (a caramel pudding from Québec made with a brown sugar sponge and a caramel sauce). Looks amazing though!
Love Barry’s leap wth add the Nuts
Every time Ben says something slightly innuendo-esque whoever is with him makes this very distinct face just like 'oh ben'
That perfect hand gesture between 3:13 and 3:14 :')
You guys have to try the impossible choco-flan cake. The principal is pretty much the same, the the result is different in an amazing way
hi sortedfood
you guys are amazing

It's a pudding chaumeur! A classic quebecer desert!
I have almond liquor and bright green pistachio liquor, which do you think would work better in this x
Almond!!!!
Robyn xxx almond :D yumm
For some reason this reminded me of those Betty Crocker bake-in-microwave mini “cakes” I think they were called Warm Delights or something.
SORTED Food Ben, you should have been more specific of WHICH nuts Barry was throwing in the chocolate 😆
InnuBENdo!!
super recette bravo!
U mentioned hazelnut liquor on the video but when I saw the ingredients, it wasn't listed to mix into the cake batter. :) so with or without? I need to try this!
Hey guys, love the show, any way you could do an apple tart recipie?
forget about netflix and chill, self-saucing chocolate pudding ALL NIGHT
Candace Lin I mean there is a self saucing part in Netflix and chill... just sayin...
BOOM TISH..
Do you think that Amarula could be a good alternative for people with nuts allergies?
I just want someone to look at me the way Barry looked at that chocolaty goodness
Finally a self-saucing pudding recipe!
my grandmother used to make this for my mom and her siblings for their birthdays. minus the nuts and liquor. my mom now makes it for mine. We call it Chocolate pudding cake. we eat it without the clotted cream.
I have a similar recipe to this and it is very good just could be a bit sweeter for my taste
looking forward for some recipes with chocolate+buckwheat from you guys perhaps in a cake or a brownie?
Can't find clotted cream in US....very hard...but I'll make a homemade buttercream or whipped cream and add the vanilla bean! Awesome recipe and I will try!! :)
Could you guys make a chocoflan? This reminded me of it, it seems similar in how its made
Heyy guys! AWESOME Video. :D I was wondering if we could replace the liquor with something non-alcoholic? Or maybe completely cut it out? LOVE LOVE LOVE you guys and your cooking!
