I took delivery of a used 2021 Tesla in Janurary 2024. The IRS website that I could claim a "clean vehicle" tax credit of up to 4000. I'm not sure if the credit has been already claimed, however. What should I do? Thanks.
I bought mine April 22nd 2023 and I just looked and Tesla filled out the form and completed on 1/24/2024 which was just a couple weeks ago so yours should be filled out by now. Hopefully you didn’t already file your taxes.
Thanks for the heads up. I just requested my report from Tesla, and got it within minutes. Now hopefully Tesla will file it with the IRS by January. 31, 2024. Everyone should follow up with Tesla to make sure the report gets filed by that date.
Hey I'm having the exact same issue. Thanks for trying to spread awareness! Be sure to update if you ever hear anything back from Tesla (that actually makes sense)
Why do you want the secondary owner to claim the tax credit? Couldn't you have just made them the primary owner when you bought the car? But I guess it's good that you brought this up and I'm surprised no one has been telling people that they should look for this form after purchasing their cars. When I first bought a Tesla back in 2018, Tesla included the form with my paperwork. And when I bought my latest Tesla last year they didn't say a word about it.
I did my taxes yesterday and claimed the 7,500 credit. Though, I am the owner. Sorry, it seems that there is a miss communication in the system regarding secondary owners.
Can someone please explain or provide the "formula" on how much of the tax credit you actually get? Bought a NEW 2023 Model Y, single filer, make way less than the 75k threshold, but ONLY got $6k of the $7,500 I was supposed to get! WHY?? And no, I never owe on my taxes.
Crazy your having an issue like that. From my experience, it came up after I gave my deposit & I filled it in. Then downloaded the PDF forward to account and he also added the EV info on the tax form. However, I didn’t do a secondary.
First of all thanks for the video and reminder to get the form. my form was already include in my account. your second part about secondary ownership does not make sense to me. Also I checked IRS website and like to the template 15400 form, it only have place for single owner. So it is hard to blame Tesla or other manufacturer not able to add secondary owernship on the form. hope you can sort out your issues and we all get our tax credit back, good luck!
How did you fix this issue? Could you please kindly let me know. I am running into this same issue where I am trying to generate the form and it's generating with the primary owner and not the secondary owner's details. I re-submitted the request and now it's showing the primary owner's name with the secondary's owners SSN...what a mess!!! Any help is greatly appreciated.
I disagree there was a question while putting owner’s information at the app, write down SSN and name who wants to claim credit on tax and it did say it’s not changeable. There is no glitch you missed it.
I’m the only owner for my Tesla and I put my car information on Turbo Tax and instead of me getting $7,500 they took $1,000 from the refund I already had
I bought model 3 on Feb 2023. No one told me to fill the form 15400 before the end of Jan, not even the tesla sales people. How would you or other people know this requirement?
Fortunately, I did not put my wife on the Tesla, since we file jointly, I don’t think we have a problem. When we put the Vin number in the IRS form, it worked fine, so does this mean Tesla generated the form and sent it in? I do feel like I’m totally missing something. Is there a risk of not getting the $7500 , assuming we have $7500 federal tax liability 😢which we do. It’s February 3. Waiting on some cash app stock trades to be reported then I’ll be filing taxes. I hope they’ll be no issues, but if they’re are, I’ll come back here complain
Great video. I've been wondering how to get that form generated. For clarity, we don't actually do anything with this form, right? This is automatically filed by Tesla to the IRS. Individuals have to fill out a separate form when they file their taxes.

Now that I have the form showing up in my account do I need to submit anything by a certain date or will everything be automatically taken care of, I recieved the form on 1/19/24 is that within the deadline?
I'm curious, since this is a tax credit and not a tax deduction, what is the issue with you (the primary) claiming the credit? Either way it's $7,500 and I'm not sure why anyone would have a secondary owner on their registration that is not close enough to them (spouse or child) that you couldn't just give the $7,500 of that's the end game. Yes, Tesla should get it right, but at the end of the day, would you prefer $7500 or $0?
There is an income limit. I am assuming that primary and secondary owners file tax separately. And if the primary owner makes over the limit, they will not get any credit.
No! You don't need to d that now ! They'll deduct the money at the time of purchase, even the California old car to new electrical vehicle program will let you deduct the money at the time of purchase. I bought a Tesla model y dual motor for more than20,000.00 off the listed price !

I have the Form, bt when I tried to enter the vehicle in Turbo Tax, you are unable to enter Tesla vehicle. It says Teslas, Chevrolets, and Cadillacs no longer qualify for a clean vehicle credit.. Ugh
One issue with TurboTax is that I wanted to efile my return and it says I can’t until 2/21/24 because TurboTax is waiting for an updated form 8936. I’m not sure why they can’t just use the one the IRS has on their site.
@@dexter44444 It seems that it is only partly dysfunctional in Turbo Tax. You can enter your VIN without an issue, but when you go to select a Make of car from the drop down box, it won't let you select Tesla and there is an info box that says that Teslas, Chevrolets, and Cdillacs no longer qualify for a tax credit.
