The only thing I find lacking in my original Z6 is autofocus performance, and that’s only comparing it to other cameras, not personally. The image quality of the Z6 is superb.
If the Z6iii was released after the Z6ii before the Z9 I would never have bought a Z9 and later a Z8. Nikon succeeded with its strategy. If I sold my Z9 I would just feel stupid because it is the best camera I ever have used but still it is a bit too heavy and that is why I also got the Z8.
@@RussandLoz Will there even be a Z5 II? Or is the Z6 line Nikon's new "entry-level" camera? Because as a Z5 owner looking to upgrade mostly for modern AF and a more low-light capable BSI sensor, I most certainly will not buy a Z6 III at 2.500+ bucks. I don't need all those advanced video features AT ALL, just interested in good stills and excellent AF.
You two are a breath of fresh air have a Z8 and ZF and love them both, Z8 for birding and landscapes and ZF for everything else, strange there will be no Z7iii at the same time, but remember the D5 and D500 there was no talk of the D500.
The Z6III not only has to meet the needs/wants of current users of Nikon's Z/F mount but also steal market share from Sony and Canon. The mid level semi pro camera is the bread and butter for all camera brands now that the lower tier point & shoot market has all but vanished. If Nikon gets the Z6III just right in terms of price and features Vs their competitors then I've no doubt users of Canon/Sony might consider switching to Nikon. The camera market as a whole is shrinking for everybody, future survival depends on grabbing as much of what's left as possible. I'll likely pre order the Z6III, I really hope it's everything we want and more 😊
Nikon should focus on acquiring new users rather than luring in users of another camera brands, if you are invested in Sony and have tonns of their lenses i see no point switching systems if the features are marginally better than your camera.
@@FeRoOOo71 New photographers generally can't afford a 2000.00 body. Also, as a Sony shooter, I gotta say that's not the best example. I have a Sony a7rIV and a Nikon Zf and ZERO Nikon lenses. I'm very excited about a Z6III matched with Sony lenses.
The Canon A1 is rumored to be 24 megapixel and cost $6500. I think a lot of Canon users will opt for a Z6iii for $4000 less. It won't have the blistering frame rates of the A1, but who needs that?
@@thomaschamberlin2485 I think you mean R1. The R1 is targetted at photo journalism/sports photographers. A completely different audience than than the mid-tier cameras. You're forgetting the R5 Mark II is about to come out. That is going to be the same price point as the Z8. The Canon R6 Mark II has leading class autofocus, it would be hard for that segment to consider Nikon if Nikon doesn't improve it's autofocus as well for their mid-tiered cameras as well.
Well, here it is my thought process. Z6 I and Z7 I, cool, first mirror-less from Nikon, but to early into the stage. I had already F mounted, not much reason to swap everything at that point (I do not make video). Z9 Came out, really cool, but too expensive. Z6 II and Z7 II then. Nice upgrade but still lots of stuff that could be improved. I was on the fence about getting one, but I was never truly convinced. I was negligeable differences from the respective D750/780 and D850 while a substantial price difference. So, stucked again with F mount. Z8 time, it was revolutionary. I also admit that for the price it is almost perfect, at least as I see it. Unfortunately, I reasoned a lot but I was a stretch for my budget. It is really an effort. I would have absolutely no money left for lenses which, it is kind of a shame. As a non professional, affording a $4K camera it is a bit too much. Zf, really really cool, but I am waiting to moving to Z mount as main system and I could not see it as a main camera (yes, for the grip). Plus, it was safe to assume a Z6 III was going to release soon. And here we are, after 4 long years the Z6 III it is coming. Honestly, this has to be really good or many people will be let down I think. It could really fill a missing spot. If it will be kind of a Z8 but with less MP and maybe less video feature (which I will be fine), and the price it is not $3K (otherwise it start to get into used Z8 territory), I will probably buy it and do the switch. If it will not, I think I will stay to the F mount indefinitely until I could afford a used Z8, waiting for the price to slightly drop. Here it is my take at least. And reading online, I will probably not be the only one doing this thought or similar.
This is the exact same conundrum I've had the last few years too. Only difference is I've also put hands on all the other systems too, but couldn't sell myself on any of them. I do really like the new om1ii tho, if I had to switch.
I was waiting for the 6iii for the longest time and ended up getting the Zf just before Christmas. So now the 6iii is off the table for me no matter what they put into it. I think it's a day late and a dollar short as they say. Hey guys, if you want to know what a real summer is like come down to Brisbane for January/February of any year. Cheers from Aus. 😊
Good discussion, cheers Guys. I think the Z6 III will be very much focussed on the videography crowd, even though it would be a very capable photo-camera. I won’t be getting it, as I have the Z9 for its fast wildlife and very good video capabilities, and then 2x Zf bodies running 40 f1.2 and 50 f1 Voigtländer z-mounts. Zf’s are being used for when I am visiting all these exotic cities in Asia, and video-capability on it is good enough for my needs. But I use them first and foremost as street photography cameras. I can see where a Z6III might fit in between the Zf and the Z8/9 for vloggers/run-and-gun setups, and with the Expeed7 processor, it will definitely outstrip the older Z6/II cameras, where AF, as well as high-fps video-capture is concerned. IMHO, if the same 24MP sensor, but in a stacked configuration is used, it will make for a powerhouse videography setup. Let’s see what the 17th brings, just excited for the technology, and that Nikon is once again growing its market share. Essential to have quality competition, keeps all manufacturers honest, at the end, we are the beneficiaries. Whether we need all the technology though, is another story :)
If the Z6III offers greater dynamic range and color bit depth, along with the rumored -10EV autofocus capabilities, then it will be a hit with wedding and event photographers. If I were still shooting the Z6II, then I would upgrade for these features. But like you, I ran out of patience waiting for the Z6III and bought a pair of Z8s, hence, I will pass on the Z6III…unless there is some irresistible deal down the road 😅.
After watching the teaser and with 4 days yet till the official launch, I’m guessing Nikon will introduce a new processor generation with the Z6III. In particular the description of pre-capture *without touching the shutter button* suggests to me the camera is buffering non-stop while turned on, and if that’s correct then how would they pull this off with the same processor found in much larger camera bodies, more capable of heat dissipation-never mind the increased battery draw? It would make more sense to me that Nikon have developed a next gen chip with smaller transistors, less power draw, and by extension less heat to manage. “Ready to perform?”, is the tag line. More performance means more processing which to me means a processor based on a smaller nanometer lithography method. And if that’s the case, then the Z6III can out perform the Z8 in some key areas (apart from sensor resolution) and Nikon continues to drive upgrades. On the other hand, if the camera turns out to be a Z8-lite then you will be correct. Who cares. But I think it more likely the Z6III will give us a sneak peek at the performance upgrades we will find in the Z9II or Z9s or Z9x or whatever they decide to call it. Just a few days and we will know for sure.
I think the z6 3 is for those that have a z6 or under and are ready to upgrade, or for those that would like to start off with a middle class camera with good specs at q not so high end price. This is not for those that already have a z7 or higher, unless they are seeking a second camera.
I think that it's been done for a while, but oddly it got put off by the launch of the Zf, then got put off by the "Red" announcement...I honestly cant wait for a Z6III, I can't afford a Z8. Perhaps they put in some "red" specs and that is why they waited? Looking forward to it...I'll be getting it asap (depending on price point). Z8 is $2K more than a Z6II in Canada...I could almost buy two for one.
I think some potential Nikon shooters who would have bought a Z6III 2 years ago maybe stretched their budgets to buy a Z8 instead, but that was also part of Nikon’s plan - maximize sales of the more expensive models first. I think if it’s basically a Zf in a contemporary body, it should be same price as the Zf. At $2500 USD, it’s hopefully either a stacked 24mp sensor or extremely fast readout sensor, otherwise it will just boost more Z8 sales.
I'm still interested in the Z6III. I've had a Z6III for quite a few years now and while I love it, I really want better autofocus for occasional wildlife, higher video sizes for professional work, and I'd love RAW internal. I didn't buy the Z6II right when it came out, and I waited a while thinking a Z6III would come and eventually got the II, with the plan to probably buy a III and keep the Z6II as a second camera in the future. I was excited when the Z8 came out, and it still might be the right camera for me, but wanted to wait to see what a Z6III would be before buying. Then I was excited when the Zf came out, and the specs look good and it's a beautiful camera, but the ergonomics make me not want it as my main camera. So years later I'm still waiting to find out what a Z6III will be, and once I know the specs I'll decide if I'm getting a Z6III or a Z8. I'd love more megapixels than the Z6II but I doubt it would make sense for the III to have higher MP unfortunately so I might have to go with the Z8 for that anyway.
There's nothing in the Nikon teaser video for the Z6 III that indicates it will have pre-capture in RAW. It will definitely have pre-capture, like the Z9, Z8 and Zf, but whether it's in jpg or RAW is yet to be determined.
It's gonna be a great camera for sure, but the price needs to be right. If it really is just a Zf in a modern shell with a CFexpress type B slot and RAW pre-capture, I don't think that would justify a price of 3000 bucks, as per the latest rumors.
Not too late, because nikon was developing the lens ecosystem, but in between they gave z8 and z9 and supported other models with firmwares. Now they just need to focus on bringing new models for different category of customers with competent tech.
I believe one of the features will be cfexpress 4.0 controller, which will take advantage of the new cfexpress cards, like the new Prograde cfexpress 4.0 cards. No need for a new camera, my Z9 and D850 are doing just fine for what I shoot.
I was REALLY looking forward to the Z6iii... 12-18 months ago. As the owner of two Z6ii's and a Z6, I'm in no rush to be sold Nikon hype again. Given the two Z8 recalls, and the lackluster Z6ii's "upgrades," I'm not going to be an early adopter on the iii. More than likely, I will end up buying into the Z8 system, or wait a little longer and see what they do with RED. An FX Z3 [Z30 with Z6ii guts] and a few new CoDec's could be a killer model.
I got tired of waiting and even though it will be announced next week, the likelihood that one will be available for purchase in the next several months is slim. Since the Z8 is on sale this month, I just went ahead with that. The Z8 was really my goal and I just couldn't justify spending $2000-$2500 on a Z6iii as an 'interim' step between the Z6ii and the Z8. I wasn't concerned about the recalls - that was a year ago and the camera I got even had firmware 2.01 already loaded.
I was in the wait for Z6iii camp & all 600 rumoured release dates but I really wanted to push my video capabilities so decided the Z8 was probably the move regardless. Zero regrets at all. Grossly underestimated how much better of a camera it is. I find it hard to use the Z6ii now in comparison (and I loved it the whole time I had it). Of course now I'd wait for the iii though but the jump between Expeed6 and 7 and gigantic
Can see the Z7 line being discontinued possibly. Might as well get a Z8. Z6iii I believe will basically be a 24mp version of the Z8. Be great if they upped the MP to 30mp. But I doubt they will do that. Either way, excited to see what it will be.
The Zf already has a 24MP sensor, therefore it would make no sense for the same resolution on the Z6/3; instead it will be a compromise 30-36MP sensor.
I have been waiting since 1959 for Nikon to launch a All-In-One focal-length zoom lens covering from 8mm Circular-Fisheye to 800mm Telephoto reach with a constant f0.95 Aperture.
I think a lot of people gave up waiting and got the Z8 instead. I did that, and I'm guessing tempting people upwards was part of why they waited for so long. That said, I have hopes the Z6iii will have some cool features that will make it worth upgrading a Z6ii 2nd body to a 6iii if the price is right. If it's a Zf in a "pro" body, I'm probably just going to get the Zf
@@RussandLoz I think if it gets N-RAW or better video specs it'll probably be enough for me. Also hoping to see the feature the Zf has where you can change the focus point with the touchscreen while using the EVF. Ok ok, I'm excited again haha. Well done Nikon
I think there is quite a bit of pendt up demand for a Nikon Z6iii. I'm certainly going to be watching for the release, the specs, etc. Personally, I'd be much more interested in a Z7iii than a Z6iii. I often use a Z 70-200mm f2.8 for my heavy duty use case. The flexibility of that lens works for me, but sometimes 70mm is not wide enough and 200mm is not long enough. When the latter occurs I often crop. The 45.6MP is great to retain data when cropping, whereas I was not enamoured with my former Z6ii which I traded for a Z7ii and now own a Z8 and Z9. But, my interests aside, the recent conjecture on the upcoming Z6iii specs sounds like a wonderful camera for those whose use case it will accomodate quite nicely.
Those we said that they are tired of waiting for the z6 III and then grab the Z8, a camera costing around €4000, have plenty of money and don’t need the Z6. Those needed the Z6 III and tired of waiting but don’t have the money, all are switched to Sony and Canon for a camera around €2500. They simply don’t have money for the Z8. Seem that you have a tree growing money in your garden. You are the users that Nikon wants in their system. Those with unlimited money.
I’m lucky that event photography fuels my Nikon fund. But sure I do seem to play their game. Then again I always find good deals saving a small fortune
At this moment there’s a lot of guessing what the 6iii might have and none of it makes me excited. I’m using the z8 z6ii so it’s going to have to be something special. Maybe once /if the red tech gets incorporated then great advances might happen At this moment I’d rather see camera security additions be put into cameras
Very few people NEED a Z 6 III, but a lot of people WANT one. Agree the Zf can be a totally different feel and experience, and one I did not like. Wanted a Z 6 III instead, back then, and since I have got a X100VI which filled the void, oddly enough.
Still got my D500, Z8 too expensive, ZF didn't like the ergonomics and the Z6ii didn't have enough for me to change to mirrorless. Pre capture, pixel shift, IBIS and fast subject focus are important if I'm going to change.
Too late for me tired of rumour and waiting for a Z7iii, pulled the trigger last week and got a Z8, figured it would depreciate less overall due to the rave reviews certainly no buyer regret here!
Russ and Loz. I agree with you both. Maybe the Z6iii is a bit too late. I am an older Nikon fanboy with a Z6ii, and I have always wanted the AF of the Z8/Z9. But its a lot of money for me as I;m on a pension and I don''t take as many photos as I used to. The Zf has sold well, but as you say the grip is poor, but it sold because of the retro look. It will be interesting how things go
Currently in the market to buy a new body (my current one is 12+ years old). I’m hoping to pick up the Z6iii before a vacation to Africa next month. If not, may have to rent the Zf and a big telephoto lens!
I don't think it's too late. The Z9 and Z8 came out for pros. The Z6III is a mid-level camera for enthusiasts like me who won't spend $4000 on a camera. I'd spend $2000-$2500 on the camera and invest in one or two lenses. The Z8/9 are too much camera for people like myself; we aren't going for a camera to be used professionally, just as a hobby. Not that there aren't hobbyists who have gone with the Z8/9 😄, but for many of us it would be out of our budget. And we may get kicked out of our homes as well 😄
I shoot Sony apsc and Nikon Z5. I think Nikon colors straight out of the camera are more pleasing. I do like the A6700 and A6600 compactness with the Sigma lenses. I am considering the Zf and the Z6iii. Sometimes the Z5 has too much rolling shutter in video. I tried the Zf at B&H photo in NYC. The eye autofocus seems comparable to the Sony A6700. I wish the Zf had one more custom button. The shutter speed dial may be useful when switching quickly and back and forth between video and stills mode. Also I wish the grip was deeper. I will check the price and size difference between the 2 cameras to decide. Also if the Z6iii comes with a curtain that protects the sensor from dust when changing lenses, that will be an important factor in my decision. Anyway, for stills the Z5 is great. The eye autofocus improved with the firmware updates. The Zf use of SD and microSD cards is an advantage in my case.
And they will, it's Nikon's common approach to make the same camera in different body :) Sony has it all the way around, they have only 2 body designs with different cameras inside.
There may be some future thinking with regards to the marketing. People already established in the Nikon system are waiting for the Z6iii. Bringing people into the system is the ZF. It seems there may be some tweaks to what’s already in the ZF, colors, video and raw pre-capture. But that also saves Nikon money because if you consider yourself a professional you’ll opt for the Z6iii, if you’re a “creator” or looking to get into Nikon your choice is the Zf; basically the same 12:1712:17 camera tweaked for 2 different lucrative markets! I have the ZF and Z6ii, I’m not looking to get a Z8 because although I do professional work, it’s not my livelihood. As a result, I’ll probably trade my Z6ii for Z6iii.
I have a Z8, and a Z6ii. I want my second Z body to have the same focusing modes and reliability. I do not always need 45mp photos. I bought my Z6ii at my local camera store when I was going to upgrade from my D500 to a D850. They were out of D850's so I decided to join Nikon mirrorless with the Z6II. I will trade the Z6ii for the Z6iii.
The Z6iii will sell well to existing Nikon users, but attract very few new users. Most have already switched to other brands (Sony primarily) and it would be difficult to get them back. As Sony shooter, I tried the Zf for a few months, but ultimately sold it because it just wasn't as good for most of what I do, despite the manual controls being fantastic.
I will be selling my Sony gear and most likely buying this if it is not overpriced. I just can't get along with the Sony, despite 5 years of trying. This will be my first mirrorless Nikon
@@Gavlister Just make sure Nikon has all the functionality you need prior to selling your Sony gear. For example, you cannot enable zebras while shooting stills. You can only see that your highlights are clipped after the fact during playback. I would highly recommend that you try it out BEFORE committing to it so that you are not disappointed by small things that it may be missing. Out of curiosity, what is it about Sony that is not delivering for you?
@@brianfitzrealty Hey, I have been shooting Nikon since the mid 80's. I got the Sony for similar reasons you spoke of. I have a lot of Leica glass and I liked the way I could focus. I still shoot Nikon, but has always been SLR. The Sony was also my travel camera, being smaller. Mostly, it';s because the controls are not ergonomic, I feel like I am operating a computer and has always felt unnatural. Also, I never liked the colour that I got from it compared to Nikon. The Sony put me off of mirrorless, despite trying different versions. I hired a Z8 recently and was blown away in every aspect, especially how easy it felt to come to terms with. It's simply as matter of what feels right for me. I want to love the Sony but it just never happened
I'm not committing, but either way, the Sony has been laying dormant for a couple of years, just not my thing. I have heard that the Nikon will be a fantastic low light camera. I've recently got in to Astrophotography and it seems to tick the boxes more that any other camera on the market (outside of dedicated or modded astro cameras)
It's too late for me. I saved up for it, but I had to spend the money before April 5th or the tax man wanted almost half so I ended up with a ZF and that will have to do me for a few years, even though I don't love the ergonomics on it. I'm guessing the Z6 III is going to be more video-orientated, possibly borrowing some intellectual property from RED. Maybe pick when up 2nd hand for under a grand by the time I start looking again.
Nikon has seemed to be way more tight lip about this release, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Z6iii exceeds several of the rumors with higher mp and a price of $2200 "just look at the Zf caught a lot of people by surprise at how good it is". I have a Z6ii and the Zf. I want the better AF and its been a testament of will to not have bought a Z8 already. I could have bought a Z8 and I really wouldn't be to concerned with this release. If the Z6iii gets somewhat close to the Z8 in terms of a stills camera and around $1000 less it would be a winner. New body and enough left over to make a huge dent in a new lens. Is the Z6iii to late??? for my blood pressure Yes. For the market a little. Better late than never.
Release price of $2.200? Certainly not. Estimates range from $2.500 to $3.000, and it would be absolutely in line with Nikon's usual pricing strategy if the Z6 III's release price is at or near the upper end of that range. Under $2.500? Not a chance. And the Z6 III being late is precisely because it might eat into Z8 sales. Same reason why Nikon will quite possibly never make a Z5 II, because what most people really want is just a good stills camera with good, modern AF.
@@CC3GROUNDZERO With the Z8 coming in at $3200-$3500 no one would buy a $3000 Z6iii and at those prices it leaves no room for the Z7iii unless they price it higher then the Z8.
@@barnowlwoodworks1690 I translated the prices 1:1 between euros and dollars, I forgot that Nikon massively overcharges in Europe for some reason (far more than any other of the big manufacturers). The Z8 goes for ~€4.000. So that's why I believe the Z6 III will be priced at or near €3.000. Even that leaves no space in their line-up for a Z7 III, unless it is made into a specialist camera (e.g. by making it very high-res, like ~60 MP) which I could very well image. I just wonder whether there will ever be a Z5 II, i.e. a true entry-level capable allrounder with great, modern AF. THAT would be my camera. I don't need high-res or advanced video features, and I believe I'm not alone in this, not by a long shot.
I am also hoping the Z6iii is something I can not have to buy. I have the Zf and Z9. I can't imagine what would influence me to buy it. I hate the flippy screen on the Zf, but that in itself isn't enough. I think the autofocus will be better for wildlife than the Zf, but I have the Z9 for that. I don't shoot video so couldn't care less about those specs. When the Zf launched I questioned why they would release it before the Z6iii. I do think it is too late now. Especially if it has a 33 MP sensor and they lose the awesome low light perfrmance of the Zf.
It's too late and it will be really expensive and double the price of the older Z6II that's on sale around the world now for $2300 aud $1800 USD Z6III price will be double and most people won't be able to buy it .The Made In Japan Canon R5MkII will probably cost a little bit more but will be much better .
waiting for Nikon to release a fully spec'd adapter that will allow AF on screw type and aperture ring on legacy lenses. I have the Df and I want an adapter that will allow me to have the full lens compatibility the Df offers.
The Z6 iii will be a great camera with excellent Len's. In my opinion Nikon missed (another) a big opportunity with the Z6 ii as this was really just a tinkering and didn't bring anything new to the table. Consequently for many lifelong Nikon users this was the last straw and they jumped ship to Sony (a7iv) and that where they will stay as technology is moving so quickly that 6 years is too long between upgrad cycles.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! My Z6 does everything I need. I am not demanding of autofocus. The Zf is interesting_ I like the looks and features, but cannot stand the ergonomics. If I started to do professional work I may consider the Z6iii or Z8. I think the Z6iii needs to be priced just right, and should not cost much more if at all than 2k USD, or nobody is going to want it.
I just need it to have a sensor dust cover, no lag from standby startup, auto focus that can cope with low contrast, dim backlit scenarios and the ability to use speedlight with red focus assist beam.... come on Nikon, this isn't complicated stuff!!! 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
I think your channel benefits from not being a slave to Nikon I’m fully invested in the Nikon Z8 system but i know it has its issues and you have confirmed them in your videos
Lol, too late.... why not look at the Z9 and Z8, which were the #1 seller in Japan and had over a year waiting list in the US, people switched systems for them.
I have a Z6, Z6II, and Z7II. I want an updated Z7III, I don't need any of the video features but want a 45mp sensor. I'm kind of frustrated that the Z7III is not being released.
The Z8 has spoiled me, particularly with its silent shutter, which is great for photographing weddings, events, wildlife, everyday things…. anything. Now, using a camera with a noisy shutter feels like a major downgrade and a step back into the 90’s. I’m curious if the Z6iii has the same silent shutter as the Z8.
@@ravidhingra484 Correct. The Z8’s electronic shutter is what has spoiled me from using any other camera. Now, using a camera with a noisy shutter feels like a major downgrade and a step back into the 90’s.
Nikon stuffed their M/L from the outset....only caught up when Exceed 7 came but the horses bolted to Sony/Canon....Z63 will be great but only for existing Nikon up graders...AND if its highly priced Canons R6mk 2 is very good for 1999(and R8 if not needing WR and dual slots and slightly slower mech SH).Plenty of ZF users will buy the mk 3, which will leave cheap retro FF at great prices(I hope).
I'm expecting a 24MP Z8 with a high frame rate, fast shutter speed and in a smaller form factor. Perfect for sports & journalism. Overkill for still portraits. Not enough MP for wildlife.
@russandloz I confirm that I understood you correctly and reiterate that if you mean that the ‘normal’ autofocus does not work sufficiently well and that the centre point must be used, it suggests a scandent autofocus. Plus him claiming to have the z6 MARK 2 !!! I remain of my opinion that you have a different machine from mine Z6 MARK 1
Cancelled & ignored by Nikon? Ah well, you're in the same boat as Tony Northrup trying to get a Zf. 🤣 ps. I've just bought a nice minty D3s - I'm just not in love with mirrorless like you guys.
It seems the whole camera lens business is slowing its pace on releasing new products. Maybe it is an effect of covid and higher prices and bottlenecks on deliveries. The Ricoh GR iii is 6 years old and yet Ricoh just "updated" with a not important HDF filter, apart from that it's the same camera. Canon has been slow, people still waiting there. Even Sony is not quick on releasing new stuff. It seems the whole business is heading towards a new time of dragging out sales on current products to secure more profit as a compensation for higher costs on every level. Might be seen as the camera business' shrinkflation. Altso spec wise, the best that is offered today is so good that in most cases it is not needed to strive for more and more. I wish Nikon would make a more compact camera, an APS-C version smaller than the Z50, something more pocketable where I'm able to use all my lenses, but doubt that will happen any time soon.
I’m really interested in your opinion on the new Z6iii. For me as a photographer (more than a video shooter) it’s overpriced, you and currently get a Sony A7IV for almost a £1000 cheaper.
Nikon Z8 is a fantastic camera on par with any of the other brands. I moved over from the Canon r5 as I grew to hate the articulated screen & canons lenses being astronomical in price. Cant fault the Z8. So for me its too late in terms of purchasing a z6iii but hey maybe one day if I fancy getting a backup...
@@RussandLoz yea the 105 macro, 24-70 2.8S & 180-600 all cost less than their canon equivalents, just as good in every regard too, in some cases better.
If it comes to pre shooting, the OM-1 and OM-1 Mk2 are still in lead. Don’t know the Mk2 values (they are higher) but in SH2 mode you got max. 70 frames RAW buffered, no reduction to jpg or so, at 50 fps, that makes whopping 1.4 seconds pre capturing without compromising AF and subject detection functions. No other camera can do this.
As long as the animal eye af matches the canon r6 mark 1 (The zf hasn’t in my testing, never used a z8 orz 9 though), it shoots at least 20fps raw compressed Nikon fix drive mode settings not being saved to each mode including u1,2,3. Sick and tired of getting 14 shots of a tree and only one shot of a running dog when changing u1&2 only for the drive mode not to change as well. Frustrating Have to manually set every time. Sony and Canon mange this. For me to be worth it. Need the above. Otherwise will stick to z6ii for things that don’t move & fantastic timelapse features and my Canon r6 for action specifically dogs running. Having 2 systems is annoying and expensive. Come on Nikon!
@@RussandLoz the trouble is, it would need a very fast electronic shutter to still be a capable sports/action performer, so that really means needing a stacked sensor like the Z8/9. Unless they’ve worked some magic, that could be too expensive to implement in this segment…
@@RussandLoz I think the new Z6lll will be a Zf with perhaps a few extra functions, but with a mechanical shutter, so as not to get too close to the Z8, which I am also a happy owner of. But in just 5 days we will get answers to all our thoughts and considerations.
I’m currently using a Z8 and Z9 and also would prefer to spend the money on another lens rather than a lower megapixel camera. I’m hoping the 35mm f/1.2 will be released soon.
@@RussandLoz good to know. I was looking at the Zf and assumed the grip made it the same. I'll look at the Z6iii vs the Z8. I know the Z8 is a step up but may be more camera than I need.
Nikon has missed the bus If nikon wants to comebach in competition it should give an advanced version in lower price and give ftz lens adopter complimentry
The biggest problem that all camera manufacturers are having it's that they are offering terrible first time user experiences by crippling cameras and not delivering seamless Internet experiences. It's a huge hurdle compared to smartphone which is delivering an excellent, albeit limited photography experience.
@@ihknilsen The sensors, EVF, processor, menu system, Internet interface, ridiculous kit lenses. The manufacturers have this ridiculous perspective that my giving a new user a terrible experience, they'll decide to spend thousands of dollars for a better experience. They don't. They do what I did. Opt to go back to the smartphone. Camera manufacturers have decided to slowly contract into oblivion. Fujifilm may be the exception.
Can we stop with the "too late" myth? If we think that people stick with a system because it's so difficult to change, then people would have stayed with Nikon. If we think that people would switch when they want something in another brand, then those people may also switch back to Nikon. Also, Nikon does well with people who stick with cameras for multiple years, rather than grabbing the new camera every couple of years. jpeg: "not good enough quality"? Please, can we also generally let go of that myth, the raw files are only needed in some situations which stretch the files. Pros also have to remember that most people who purchase the Z6III are enthusiasts who can wait 6 months without significant consequences.
Well it might be well too late for us, but we’ll see what happens. But sure if it’s aimed at enthusiasts they might well have waited. Guess we are speaking from our perspective. With jpeg. It will be fine if close enough. I seldom are. 😊
@@RussandLoz It's too late for you if you've moved to Sony and plan to stay with them. Otherwise, it's not really, you'll probably be with Nikon for the rest of the decade. The Z8 and Z9 are aimed at the pros. I guess I have trouble understanding how photographers are seldom close enough, with how good the cameras are at getting us there.
@@UnconventionalReasoning Well I don't think you are considering the effect of a overall Camera Market drastically shrinking over the past Decade. Nor the pending issues of AI and whether or not folks in the future will even care What's real or not. Most cameras are good enough for those that think their so called smartphones are more then good enough. I have a hard time understanding those that LIMIT themselves to only what they need/want and think that should be the same for everyone else.
@@RussandLoz Seriously, though what "quality" do you need with precapture that the jpeg is insufficient? And your situation is completely unique because of the fiasco with Nikon having your Z8 for so long. And it's never "too late" for you, as you flip like an Olympic gymnast. By the end of 2024, you might have sold your Zf to get the Z6III.
Yes, you are right. Its too late, i guess nikon should roll back the announcement and cancel all the research and development. They should recall all their cameras and issue full refunds.
Sounds good, but I sense sarcasm 🤓. It’s possibly too late for people like Loz and I, but it was worth a good chat about it all which people seem to enjoy.
thank you russ & loz, zzzzz....6iii not for me I'm an steel waiting for steels photographers body maybe zzzzz7? any one know about vinyet in the 24-120 ? I to shoot with the 24-200 z, a lot of bleary photos' thinking about the 24-120 or 24-70 f4'i? have the 105 mc
Funny, we always have two crowds commenting on new gear vids: “I can’t keep up with these new releases, I’m keeping what I have!” And, “Come on Nikon, you’re late, I need to update my 2 year old body!” To both crowds, stop your whining and let others enjoy their new releases or, older favorite gear. I think we all need to get comfy with the 3-4 year refresh cycle we’re seeing with modern bodies. Especially given the competition that camera companies are facing lately (cell phones, AI, each other, etc).
Not too late for many people who don't want to spend more for a Z8 or want the ergonomics of a Zf.
100% in agreement with you!!
The only thing I find lacking in my original Z6 is autofocus performance, and that’s only comparing it to other cameras, not personally. The image quality of the Z6 is superb.
I agree. The Z6ii image quality is excellent.
Yeah, maybe they knew they'd sell more gear if releasing last, but high risk as z6 range also appeals to enthusiasts
@@FeRoOOo71doesn’t really matter to Nikon where the customers come from, it’s money in their pocket regardless.
Always enjoyable listening to / watching your observations. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Thank Bob, are you interested in a z6iii?
I need it as a small camera 2 to replace my Z62 to pair with my Z9. That Z9/Z8/Zf smoother focus system would complete the range. Buying immediately
They still may grab us! Lol
Wish they gave us something to chew on in that trailer lol
Keep up the chat! Completely agree, it is very entertaining, and I am not in the market for a Z6III (yet....). Love your chow
Thanks. But who knows it might be revolutionary!
Very good points! If you can't take decent pics with the gear available before z6iii, a new camera isn’t going to change that.
Yeah us too. But I’m very happy with the z8 despite its single fault. Zf is excellent too really. Feel much happier than I was with the z6/7ii’s
Waited long to buy z6ii due to financial issue 😂 but plan changed to Z6 iii probably will buy next year ❤❤
Can see the Z7 line being discontinued possibly.
Aren’t we all lol
I think a lot of people gave up waiting and got the Z8 instead. I did that, and I'm guessing tempting people upwards was part of why they waited for so long. That said, I have hopes the Z6iii will have some cool features that will make it worth upgrading a Z6ii 2nd body to a 6iii if the price is right. If it's a Zf in a "pro" body, I'm probably just going to get the Zf
Nikon may well entice us with a new hardware feature. I think they’ll have to in order to stand out
@@RussandLoz I think if it gets N-RAW or better video specs it'll probably be enough for me.
I am hoping the new Z6iii will have a better auto focusing than the Z6ii when tacking birds in flight.
If you already started buying Z Glass why would you switch?
At this moment there’s a lot of guessing what the 6iii might have and none of it makes me excited. I’m using the z8 z6ii so it’s going to have to be something special. Maybe once /if the red tech gets incorporated then great advances might happen
At this moment I’d rather see camera security additions be put into cameras
Canon 5c is a primary Cinema camera. You need to compare it with Sony R5 which you can switch immidiatly.
I’m sure the mark 3 will have all that and more.
Too late for me tired of rumour and waiting for a Z7iii, pulled the trigger last week and got a Z8, figured it would depreciate less overall due to the rave reviews certainly no buyer regret here!
It's never too late
And we may get kicked out of our homes as well 😄
Fair enough, but a z8 has been reduced but maybe still tipping over a lot of budgets. I do wonder what the price will be of the z6iii
Will it finally have rules of third and golden arc overlay??????????????????
I don't think it’s late, but I got tired of waiting and got a ZF to go with my Z8, too.
Then same for me it is too late. But maybe they want us to get all 3! Lol
I kept my Z6ii for for astro (modded) I have the Z8 but what I really want is my little Z50 back.
Curious as to why ? I still have mine but don’t use it ….
All they have to do is make a Zf that you can hold without cramping.
Lol, yes, true with heavier lenses.
And they will, it's Nikon's common approach to make the same camera in different body :) Sony has it all the way around, they have only 2 body designs with different cameras inside.
If it's 36Mpixel I will be intrigued, but at 24 it's just another body and I'll definitely stay with Zf
Won’t that encroach on the z8?
@@RussandLozZ8 is 45MP
There may be some future thinking with regards to the marketing. People already established in the Nikon system are waiting for the Z6iii. Bringing people into the system is the ZF. It seems there may be some tweaks to what’s already in the ZF, colors, video and raw pre-capture. But that also saves Nikon money because if you consider yourself a professional you’ll opt for the Z6iii, if you’re a “creator” or looking to get into Nikon your choice is the Zf; basically the same 12:17 12:17 camera tweaked for 2 different lucrative markets!
Does anyone still think there is room left for a Z7 III ? Quite sure this numeral is at the end of the line.
I own a D850 and just sold my Z6ii, so I'm waiting for the specs Z6iii to compare with the Z8. Which one will it be to purchase?
It’ll be hard to guess. Discounted z8 would be tempting but who knows the specs
No it’s not there are thousands of Nikon DLSR cameras out there guys
It's too late and it will be really expensive and double the price of the older Z6II that's on sale around the world now for $2300 aud $1800 USD
Z6III price will be double and most people won't be able to buy it .The Made In Japan Canon R5MkII will probably cost a little bit more but will be much better .
waiting for Nikon to release a fully spec'd adapter that will allow AF on screw type and aperture ring on legacy lenses. I have the Df and I want an adapter that will allow me to have the full lens compatibility the Df offers.
I'd very much like if they made a manual to auto adapter, there are some about but not fully there yet. That would be incredible
A lot of photographers out there with z6ii's waiting to upgrade.
I am with z6ii and I'm perfectly happy with it 🤷🏻♂️
The Z6 iii will be a great camera with excellent Len's.
Thanks. Yes you’re right. I think the cost will be an interesting one
I just need it to have a sensor dust cover, no lag from standby startup, auto focus that can cope with low contrast, dim backlit scenarios and the ability to use speedlight with red focus assist beam.... come on Nikon, this isn't complicated stuff!!! 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
The zf, z8 and z9 can do all that apart from flash beam, but I'm sure it'll meet the rest
I think your channel benefits from not being a slave to Nikon I’m fully invested in the Nikon Z8 system but i know it has its issues and you have confirmed them in your videos
There have been issues but generally it’s a great tool I enjoy using. I would like better bird detection though lol
@@RussandLozwatch Hudson Henry’s latest video, your can download his latest setting file, great focusing setup
@pjbaddict Not everyone needs to be over rated Sony fan boys 😂
I have a Z9, Z50, and Z30. I’d buy an aps-c z camera with the Z9 autofocus and stacked sensor.
I think a lot of people would, then Nikon will have a full range
Lol, too late.... why not look at the Z9 and Z8, which were the #1 seller in Japan and had over a year waiting list in the US, people switched systems for them.
@russandloz quote: Not sure what you mean? In which context? unquote at 5.11 it is basically said that utofocus is if a single point of focus is used
Loz uses single point with back button focussing as he finds that’s the most consistent using older cameras
I have a Z6, Z6II, and Z7II. I want an updated Z7III, I don't need any of the video features but want a 45mp sensor. I'm kind of frustrated that the Z7III is not being released.
Why not jump to z8?
@@RussandLoz Good point. I just wanted a smaller camera.
Yes. Fully agree. It’s hard going back once you have modern features. I’d be surprised if it didn’t have a electronic shutter
Z8 has only electronic shutter
Is the 3.69 EVF in 2024 enough? No.
I'm expecting a 24MP Z8 with a high frame rate, fast shutter speed and in a smaller form factor. Perfect for sports & journalism. Overkill for still portraits. Not enough MP for wildlife.
Nikon need to create "RED log" or give us R3D raw for Nikon cameras, just like Panasonic giving us Arri Log C3 for their GH7
Hey, Loz uses back button as he feels there is more control over the camera where as it can focus in and out at times.
What is scandent AF?
Cancelled & ignored by Nikon? Ah well, you're in the same boat as Tony Northrup trying to get a Zf. 🤣
ps. I've just bought a nice minty D3s - I'm just not in love with mirrorless like you guys.
Is it too late with the Canon R1, and a mirrorless shutter?
Yes that could well be the case, Nikon must have had issues though they have released zf and z8.
I’m really interested in your opinion on the new Z6iii. For me as a photographer (more than a video shooter) it’s overpriced, you and currently get a Sony A7IV for almost a £1000 cheaper.
Just having first look. Nothing that different from ZF. Does it have mechanical shutter?
If RedCodeRaw comes to Z6iii, Z8 and Z9 it won't be too late
I’m not an expert in that. What is Red?
Nikon Z8 is a fantastic camera on par with any of the other brands. I moved over from the Canon r5 as I grew to hate the articulated screen & canons lenses being astronomical in price. Cant fault the Z8. So for me its too late in terms of purchasing a z6iii but hey maybe one day if I fancy getting a backup...
Interesting, so Nikon gear is generally cheaper?
@@RussandLoz yea the 105 macro, 24-70 2.8S & 180-600 all cost less than their canon equivalents, just as good in every regard too, in some cases better.
@@KPAki1Ler Always liked the look of the 28-70 f2 though
@@RussandLoz yea I think that lens is praised for basically replacing many people's primes in their kit bags.
As long as the animal eye af matches the canon r6 mark 1 (The zf hasn’t in my testing, never used a z8 orz 9 though),
it shoots at least 20fps raw compressed
Nikon fix drive mode settings not being saved to each mode including u1,2,3.
Wow, the background is so separated from you guys it looks like a green screen
Edit: One can buy the Z8 without taxes on amazon for around €3300...
Thanks. 50 1.2 and 85 1.8 does the job!
I believe the Z6lll will be with mechanical shutter.
I hope not. Shutters seem very out of date as much prefer the electronic on my z8
@@nightowlnzab I think Nikon will keep a reasonable distance to Z8.
it's too late if you own z8 or a z9
Maybe so. Unless they unleash a new beast! 🤷♂️🤣
I’m currently using a Z8 and Z9 and also would prefer to spend the money on another lens rather than a lower megapixel camera. I’m hoping the 35mm f/1.2 will be released soon.
This is how we feel. I hope for Nikons sake they sell!
I have the Z8 and Z6ii, I’m not interested on the Z6iii, I’d rather buy the 35mm 1.2
That lens is the only one left on the old road map. Strange it hasn’t come out.
Love my z6ii.
No. Its definitely not too late. A little late yeah. Too late? No, absolutely not.
I bet I’ll have one next year lol
@@RussandLoz I was saving for Z8 but I may just trade up to this instead. Ive been able to do great work with my two Z6ii's.
Nice vid thanks! Subbed.
Get the hand grip for the Zf
I have the smallrig which makes a good difference but still no z6 or z8 grip
@@RussandLoz good to know. I was looking at the Zf and assumed the grip made it the same. I'll look at the Z6iii vs the Z8. I know the Z8 is a step up but may be more camera than I need.
Nikon has missed the bus
If nikon wants to comebach in competition it should give an advanced version in lower price and give ftz lens adopter complimentry
The biggest problem that all camera manufacturers are having it's that they are offering terrible first time user experiences by crippling cameras and not delivering seamless Internet experiences. It's a huge hurdle compared to smartphone which is delivering an excellent, albeit limited photography experience.
Curious about what is “crippled” in the Nikon Z line? What does a camera have to do with seamless internet?
@@ihknilsen The sensors, EVF, processor, menu system, Internet interface, ridiculous kit lenses. The manufacturers have this ridiculous perspective that my giving a new user a terrible experience, they'll decide to spend thousands of dollars for a better experience. They don't. They do what I did. Opt to go back to the smartphone. Camera manufacturers have decided to slowly contract into oblivion. Fujifilm may be the exception.
Nikon has a history of weak marketing combined with not listening to their loyal base. I love their gear in spite of this.
Then again the Zf is very overpowered considering it’s a retro style. Can use for both pro work and hobby
Me too, i just watch all of your Video, cannot afford all that New commer Schrot
@@natureredux1957 Why do you assume I have not considered all of that? And what does it have to do with my comments here?
@@RussandLoz Seriously, though what "quality" do you need with precapture that the jpeg is insufficient?
And your situation is completely unique because of the fiasco with Nikon having your Z8 for so long. And it's never "too late" for you, as you flip like an Olympic gymnast. By the end of 2024, you might have sold your Zf to get the Z6III.
You shouldn't be surprised to find out that there are many who would rather save at least 700 quid.
Hopefully. Find out tomorrow
what about Nikon Z90?
Yes, you are right. Its too late, i guess nikon should roll back the announcement and cancel all the research and development. They should recall all their cameras and issue full refunds.
Sounds good, but I sense sarcasm 🤓. It’s possibly too late for people like Loz and I, but it was worth a good chat about it all which people seem to enjoy.
Very curious on which lens this video is shot on. Can you confirm please.
50 1.2 and 85 1.8. Do you like?

I guess we’ll wait and see…
Pre capture is not innovating?
What camera system do you currently use? Which Sony body are you comparing it to?
Funny, we always have two crowds commenting on new gear vids: “I can’t keep up with these new releases, I’m keeping what I have!”
And, “Come on Nikon, you’re late, I need to update my 2 year old body!”
To both crowds, stop your whining and let others enjoy their new releases or, older favorite gear.
I think we all need to get comfy with the 3-4 year refresh cycle we’re seeing with modern bodies. Especially given the competition that camera companies are facing lately (cell phones, AI, each other, etc).
It’s true! We aren’t really complaining as I’m happy with my setup. More constructive criticism lol
