I was thinking the same thing Paul, my best guess, muffler packing changes the sound, good tuning, valve adjustment on the tight side of spec. There are a few tricks to making them smoother but you can't make it 4 cylinder smooth unless the 4 is running rough, LOL ! I've put over 75 of these XS650s back on the road (in 25 years), I've an 80 Special II in the garage in work and a 76 in wait.
Forgot the cam chain, adjust with engine off, adjust the noise away (NO MORE THAN THAT) with a rag under the cam chain adjuster (cover of of course) engine at idle
Hi, not rephased, it has stock crankshaft and camshaft. I guess it looks smooth because I rev it a little in this vid, but otherwise you can feel the vibrations a lot
I'm thinking about going with the bare metal look on mine. How did the clear coat hold up? Did it adhere fine to the bare metal? Also, what kind of clear coat did you use? Thanks for your time!
It's the same as a paint : the secret for the clear coat to hold is sanding. The paint, or the clear coat needs a "rough" area to hold. You can sand with 600 or 800 sandpaper and it will hold just fine. Or you can use an electric sander as I did, depends on the result you're expecting. I used satin clear coat used in automotive industry, but any clear coat applied by people who know what they're doing, will work just fine.

One of the best bike in the world
I like the bare metal ! Sounds fantastic as well !
Amazing bikes but I love them stock
beautiful bike
Thank you :)
I actually love the sound of this. Nice job.
For how it looks... I would prefer a little more rumble. Good sound for daily rider. But sounds too pedestrian.

Love the finish on the tank what is it?
Where did you get the air filter and seat? Looking to build my xs and that seat is exactly what i'm looking for.
Air filter is an UNI with 20° angle. Bought it on ebay I think. For the seat, go to counterbalancecycles and look at what he can do ;)
Looks like Mikuni Round Slide carbs? Care to share your jetting? I am having a heck of a time tuning mine...thanks!
Hey, unfortunately I've done my jetting 4 years ago, I don't remember what are the specs anymore sorry :/
i know 7yrs ago but makes me want to thrash my xs650 everywhere but yep watch out for skippy jumping out in front of you sheesh close
Thanks, 7 years ago but this little xs650 still goes hard ;)
Is this rephased? Seems too smooth for an XS. Great job on the cable routing and clean build.

@@philippeanglade7043 I t sounds like a 447 engine stock. They are in the right hands more than adequate for today’s riding.
what battery box is that?
ClutchUpProductions Hi, I made the battery box
Just bought one of these myself. What front forks are those? Thanks in advance.
Hi, it's a stock front fork from a XS special. Only with added dust covers.
did you lower the front forks by chance? the stance seems a bit more horizontal than on the stock.
I went the opposite way. I wanted to improve the lean angle so I bought custom made shocks, they are 15mm higher than stock
do you know the length of them? could you just buy some adjustable rear shocks from ebay and raise them a few mm?
or rather, if possible, could you tell me the final length of the shocks? were they 320mm?
Very nice bike! What speedo is that?
Thanks, it's a Daytona Velona
Nice - thanks!
What handlebars are you rocking
Ben Clark hey ! That’s some basic motocross handlebar
what exhaust is that?
Hi, it's a 2-1 from MAC exhaust, or XS Performance, depending on where you're buying it from
is that a mac exhaust?
Yes, mac 2-1 headpipes and a supertrapp muffler.
Did you clear coat your bare metal tank?
Hi, yes it's clear coated, but will be painted soon ;)

Awesome, thanks so much for the reply
where is this?
Rob Weaver It’s close to Volvic, France ;)
beautiful area, tx !
Front fork is bent mate
It's probably just the camera lens distortion.
Awful riding technique. Stamping the gear selector when going down the box is stupid.
Jack King 😂
nice bike but bad driver ..... probably responsible of death of stupid younger "followers" !
Why ? Because I'm riding alone in the twisties means that I'm responsible for other riders to crash ? Come on, try to be serious ;)
