Just a reminder, this isn't a "Promotional Image" officially. It is a set photo snapped on an iPhone (as James admitted) and the running theory is that this was taken when David Corenswet was adjusting the costume.

Its a reference to all star superman. The idea of the image is just when superman ends something else happens so he needs to go back out again. Or that superman gets ready for work like the rest of us. Its an all star superman reference very much in the tone of that book which is about humanizing superman, which is one of the comics he cited many times for this movie.

I saw it this way: his suit is dirty meaning he just got back from a battle and was going to rest. Then, the disaster behind him started and a weary Superman answered the bell and pulled on his boots to save the world yet again. What’s more Superman than Clark being exhausted yet still finding the strength to suit up and fight for earth one more time?

I was just going to say exactly this. This looks middle of the story and he’s already been in the mud. The question though, is why would you use a scene like this to show off the iconic suit for the first time. I want a clean suit in a proper stance so I can see the colors and the fit and the design. I think this suit might actually look pretty good but this picture does it no justice. Really strange choice for a reveal.
It doesn't even look like authentic battle damage though. It's just kinda dirty and wrinkly in spots. If the goal is to have battle damage after saving people, actually have some proper effects then. Don't make it look like someone dragged it out of a closet ffs.

Terrible first reveal not just of the suit looking dirty, covered up bent over, but also his character not having a sense of urgency for the battle in the background

It looks like he's been on superhero duty the whole week. I do agree that the pose and the background doesn't do it justice but at the end of the day it's a suit reveal.
These boots look like the kind of shoes you wear when you want to go to the swamp but still want to look a little classy.

The reason he looks the way he does with the threat in the background is to show his battleworn suit, it is dirty from battle, and he is beat up... he is dejected from failing to stop the threat... his morale is low, but he will still go into save the day but he is not as confident at the moment... and that threat in the background is most likely Warworld meaning he's fighting Mongul potentially

I’m just so confused by the reveal. Feels AI generated and with no build or hype to it. Really feels a bit CW and underwhelming. Wanted to bright colors like from the comic. I dont understand why they reveal these things. It always leads to fans getting angry and judging just for them to eat their words when they see it later on. The public has never been good at judging how things will look final product. Or how actors will do. That's why every Batman gets underestimated.

It's definitely just a weird picture! David is sitting down in an odd position, the lighting is weird, and the suit is battle-damaged. I swear, when we see the suit in motion or we see a better photo, it will look MUCH better, and people will love it!
Realistically speaking, this photo will just be a footnote in the future, especially once the movie comes out.
I 100% agree that it will look and be better than this. But that just begs the question even more: WHY did they chose to reveal it like this? They had all the time and money in the world, it's not like they had to rush out a set photo. This just screams "Just photograph Superman putting on his suit on a green screen, and then we'll do something cool in the background in post", and they ended up with this.
The posture isn't doing the actor, the suit or the movie any favors. The set and the lighting looks wonky.
Like Joe said: make a grand reveal in a majestic pose, with better lighting. Do a picture that tells a story worthy or Superman. Why did they make Superman look slow and depressed? So many questions.
All in all this reveal probably won't change the future box office either way, but come on man, this was your first chance to hype up the movie. Plan a better photo shoot.

"kinda looks ai generated", well, you can tell that about 99% recent superhero movies.
My take on the meaning behind what is happening in the picture goes off a rumor on the story being a twist on Kingdom Come. Instead of an older Superman needing to come back to handle the out of control new heroes, this movie will be a new Superman coming into a world with heroes that have no sense of duty, integrity, love for humans. To me, this image is Superman having to once again go back out because "the kids are at it again" type of deal. It looks like he just got through fighting and now realizes they haven't learned their lesson and are back it.
As for the suit, I'm not worried about the colors and brightness. You can see with his lower legs and boots that it is quite bright and that looks great. The curl is amazing and yay for the trunks. But man, I don't really care for the New 52 inspired look. Not a huge fan of the collar or the linework over the arms. Too complicated IMO and too MCU looking, especially when some fan art looks so damn perfect. I will hold judgement until the trailer or new photos. But it DOES remind of Pattinson's suit. At first I didn't like the color and cowl but man did I grow to love it. Looks very similar in style.... same universe hype?! lol
Superman is the original superhero. Superheroes exist cause of Superman, not the other way around.
I think the point of the photo was to showcase the juxtaposition of how Superman feels like he's just a guy gearing up for another day at the office, but also how badly he's needed for the survival of humanity. I think they were going for something different than someone would expect for the reveal, and overall, I liked it. It reminds me of the Alex Ross picture.
If you don't want another origin movie then expect this scenario is gonna happen with Superman eventually. Always having to save humans all the time never having a second rest, he would begin to tire of it all. I hope it goes that way,.

Hahaha, finally!!! Totally agree, it looks like CW to me when I first saw it. But love the bright color and the smudge on the suit. That's the one thing I don't like about Cavil's suit, it was so clean, looks like he's in a fake action scene.

I hope Gunn's Supe captures some of the fun. It's not really campiness, but Superman, at his best, has always had an element of fun, and that's a hard thing to sell. I don't want "dark." I'm hoping that Gunn can bring the emotional range that brought to Guardians. Jokes are funnier when they're contrasted with tragedy and tragedy hits harder when it comes out of a clear blue sky. Superman has never been my favorite, but I'd never heard of Guardians of the Galaxy. I'm really hopeful about this new Superman movie.

Why isn't he standing straight up like the man, in a stance? With an optimistic smile or even a stoic look on his face? Why does he look so "dreary" and " i hate everything" look? Where's the F-ing optimism? Why is he hunched over tying his boots? Why isn't he looking prestine standing with his shield? His suit should look clean and strong.
As someone who didn't really like the MoS suit, it looks a little better than that. I would have liked it to look somewhat brighter! Not as bright as Christopher Reeve, but maybe the same brightness as Sashe Calle suit in the Flash.. this reveal doesn't inspire hope. I'm afraid this will be EVEN further from Superman than Zack Snyder's vision 🤦♂️🤦♂️
At this point, I'm convinced that some of THESE writers/directors just don't GET Superman and why he is loved. Why can't you just give us traditional Superman? I can't do another 10 years of Dark take Superman. This IS NOT the character! I could take or leave the trunks. AT least look to My Adventures with Superman. Yeah this really makes me believe that this was someone photographing the actor getting ready on set, and then photoshopped a "cool epic" background in post. It just fell flat. They should have planned a better reveal. Every picture tells a story, and the story this picture is telling is not a flattering one...

I think the lighting is whats causing Joe to think the suit looks darker. Remember in animated Superman shows, his suit would get a lot darker in darker environments. I think the suit visually looks amazing.
I like the suit so far. Nice modern contemporary look. This is controversial but I think should have ditched the red trunks if they are going with a modern contemporary look instead of the classic look. I like how he looks like "Oh dammit! I just got back from saving the world! Already!? We're doing this again!? Ok guess i gotta put the boots back on!"
