It's an interesting scenario
Main frontline was on the West side. Imagine if in WW2, Germans pulled divisions from the East to defend in Normandy - it would be utterly ridiculous. Plus tsar Nicholas was doing covert diplomacy with Germans at the time anyway (through noble connections, through diplomats "bumping into each other" in Sweden, yadda yadda), with Germans reciprocating because they'd much rather focus on the West, believing that one more push is all they need to capitulate France, their main foe
Here's one that I've seen Axis and Allies players do, I'm not sure if you've done it. What if "Kill Japan" first was the strategy in the West instead of "Kill Germany" first? We know Europe was given priority by the U.S. in our timeline but what if those resources were dedicated to Japan primarily with Europe given the token troops and resources? I think Operation Torch would have still happened but the invasion of Italy might be delayed.
This really is an interesting question, and as far as plausibility, it make a lot of sense. There were people in the US high command who advocated for it also.
Long lines of resupply - with subs everywhere...take a boat trip to ireland..then compare to a boat trip to japan...it's just a really bad ideas...u.s. and bits...have command and control of the seas , shipping works...
@@Thom4ES Well it wouldn't be ignoring one in favor of another, just prioritizing one over the other. There would still be battles in the Atlantic and as I said speculated, Operation Torch, but they're be a greater focus and dedication of resources in neutralizing and defeating Japan to avoid any distraction of the pacific from the main theater in Europe. If I was to consider what may happen in regards to Europe, would be to surround and blockade Europe, including Italy, and saving ground invasions for later post- North Africa while the Japanese are being driven out of Europe and perhaps even invading Japan itself.
The thing is, nobody outside of US really gave two shits about Japan. So Japan would need to do some other dumb thing to offend the British, like attacking Australia or something. But there is another issue. While the Allies would be busy playing chase with Japan, the Soviets would steamrolled Germany out of existence and we'd get Soviet Europe. Which is something the Allies don't want to happen. So for US to focus on Japan first, Soviets would need to do significantly worse in Europe and/or there'd need to be significantly larger threat of Communism taking over Asia.
What if Japan decided to honour the Anglo-Japanese treaty of 1902 and join the allies (this would involve not invading China, maybe not even Manchuria)?
This would probably mean another Ruso-Japanese war, and very likely the Soviet union would be on their own when Germany attacked. Might be USSR would manage to get back to their borders, but could just as well mean the fall of the Soiet Union in 1950. There would be no space race and the nuclear arms race would be decidedly onesided.
What if at the start of the Siberian intervention, Japan finds Alexei Romanov and makes him a puppet ruler of Siberia to justify their ongoing “intervention”? Yes Alexei Romanov is assassinated in July and the intervention starts in August, so either move the intervention forward a couple of months, or have the Czechoslovak Legion rescue Alexei and bring him to the Japanese. Either way, Japan should remain in Siberia after October 1922, with enough legitimacy so that America doesn't embargo Japan or force Japan's withdrawal, & Japan can pay for the “intervention” with Siberian gold/iron/gems/fur. Or, alternatively, one of his sisters, Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, or Anastasia, survives and is married into the Japanese royal family giving Japan a claim over all of Russia.
My first thought about why Sweden would get fully involved in the Winter war would be if the Soviet air raid that hit one of their cities/towns did way more damage and seriously ticked off the population. As for my own what if; What if the U.k had actually made its move to take Norway before the Germans did?
Soviets invaded Finland to prevent the formation of anti-Soviet "Northern Alliance", actually, as well as to deny Finland being able to provide anybody with a staging ground for an invasion of Leningrad. You can see this from diplomatic exchanges published by Russian and Finnish researchers. Even so, Sweden DID send a lot of volunteers, but Soviets have managed to capitulate Finland quickly enough to avoid French and British from sending 100k soldiers there. By the peace terms, Finland was banned from joining any alliances whatsoever, including Swedish one All-in-all, Winter War was the reason Sweden didn't participate in WW2

There was some serious talks going on between Finland's and Sweden's government at the time, to placate the Soviet Union.. About Åland becoming Swedish, and Sweden and Finland joining up, but Finland would keep it's autonomy in everything but international affairs. Of course the Soviet Union rejected this, as it REALLY didn't want Finland closing any ties with "Western Powers". It wanted Finland for itself, and anything else was just playing for the international audience. Sweden was also really careful not to provoke the Soviets too much... The Swedish population though was very anti Soviet/Russia, as it was the historical enemy to everyone. And every kid had heard sometime during his childhood that "if you don't behave, the Russians will come for you". By this time Finland had only been it's own country for less than 30 years, Russian for about 80-90, and before that Swedish for 600+ years.
