It's OK though, Macbook Pros have never been called "laptops" by Apple because they would in fact sear your legs if used in that position. An egg needs to reach only about 158F to become firm, so the underside of a typical MacBook Pro can be used to make a perfect omelet whilst you use it to scroll through Kijiji in search of a more human-friendly device. So funny to find this review after I purchased my first ever MacBook Pro. All my friends who are in the sound/video/media world have always talked up MAC and I always fought it with the PC world. That being said I have a 2018 MacBook Pro and have not had any issues since I bought it 9 months ago. I use it to edit video with Adobe creative suite, Record and mix with Logic Pro and use it live with Mainstage. Being a PC guy for 23 years they are not anymore perfect, so I guess will see how it goes.
Patrick Rushton Patrick Rushton thank you! I was thinking of buying this for programming, by your statement you bought it 9 months ago. Did you buy it at a mac store? Thanks for the reply! 😁
Just had to have my keyboard fixed a couple weeks ago. I don't know if it's this way for all Mac stores, but they were able to make the repair in the store and I had it back the next day. The guy told me that they have had to repair so many that the corporate offices decided to train people up to make the repair in-store.
I have been using a 2014 macbook pro 15 inch i7 still works well only issue I've had recently is performance took a dive but turns out the reason why is because my battery needs to be replaced and apple slows performance when the battery goes bad luckily the full replacement is only $200 that includes the labor. Not a bad deal in my book as I will probably be able to use it for another 2-3 years.
First video I've ever watched from this channel and I have to say, the quality is phenomenal. Simple, well prepared, in-depth, excellent audio and great b-roll. Overall a deceptively simple video with great content flow and top notch production behind the scenes. Brilliant, I'm subbed!
When running inside a freezer, Apple keeps the fan quiet instead of getting the clock speed higher is exactly like Ted Beneke spent the $617k to buy a Mercedes Benz instead of paying his taxes in Breaking Bad.
Snazzy Labs well i asked the wrong question... yes it would benefit, but does it even have the new paste... or is apple keeping the good paste only for 8cores?
That's why you took so much time to make this video. I didn't understand why you took so long to make a Macbook Pro video. Reason is, this video is insanely different than any other Macbook Pro Review. Great one.
I dont get it. 1mm extra in hight would double the heatsink size, maybe fix the keyboard, and leave place for more outputs like LAN and displayports. I would choice a normal sized workstation Lenovo, Dell or HP labtop any day and for half the price.
you're absolutely right, but they tend to stick with a design for years to recover their production/r&d costs (engineering etc.). I think they already realised they messed up (hence the "generous" repair programme) but they'll stick to this horrible design for some more nevertheless, because it is "cost-effective" to do so. Except it damages their reputation big time, but this is something you don't compute.
I love how he uses Apple products like any Apple fanboy but knows very well Apple's philosophy is form over function. Wasn't looking for another laptop, but still an entertaining video!
I got my MB pro since spring 16 and my keys work perfect.. But since almost everyone owning a newer one has problems with the keys... I guess im the exception
Next MacBook Pro: "We got it to be thinner by removing all the ports. The keyboard is now a touchscreen, and the case is solvent-welded shut so Louis Rossmann can't repair it. It is expected to last about seven months, which is why we include a six-month warranty. You can purchase AppleCare for three years for the price of YOUR IMMORTAL SOUL, but this doesn't cover any of the design defects we hope you won't notice."
I still use an MBA from 2014. None of those issues for me. It still works pretty well. Runs what I need it to run. Prolly won’t do a proper upgrade in a while.
Keyboards, processors and thermal throttling aren’t the only issues. One can justifiably argue that storage availability is more of a hindrance than processor speed. In most cases if your processor is slow it takes a little bit longer to complete a task. But when your SSD drive is full no amount of waiting is going to rectify the problem. The previous limit of 1TB was absurdly insufficient and a principal reason why I still use a MBP with a replaceable SATA drive (2 TB). The larger storage options of the 2019 models are, at least for me, an indication that I can contemplate going shopping.
I had a 2016 macbook pro 13 inch and it broke 3 times, but at the third repair I claim for refund under consumer law and they are now replacing my computer, so we shouldn't only talk about bad things but we should share good things too, and after sales service is awesome. Consumer law claim was from UK
I just recently bought a new “2017” MacBook Air 13 fully optioned out because I know Tim Cook is going to drag this on into the next generation to try and make the 2020 mbp even thinner. Because “courage” and dumb bullshit. I want my ports and I want a nice keyboard with macOS. If this is the last MacBook I ever buy then I’ll be happy keeping it around for 30 years to just check email and balance a spreadsheet.
Mark M hi. Excuse my ignorance but what do u mean “optioned out”? Out of everything I’ve been reading the last few days as I decide which Mac I’m going to buy (or not) your comment is the most interesting since this may be the way I go.

Since there's 820 comments, I can safely say that I'm way too late to the party, and Quinn will probably ignore this comment altogether (yet, here I go). I love your videos, and you were the reason why I threw myself into the Hackintosh scene. Your Crapintosh video, although the system I used was different, showed me that I can get a decent performer with the hardware I have and say goodbye to unnecessary system hangs, 100% disk usage when updating a Windows Store app, and use Photoshop since using it on Linux through Wine is painful. The thing I'm interested in for your next project is another Hackintosh build (people seem to love em, after all), but more, well, portable! Using a Laptop from the last 8 years, can you get a decent alternative to the still somehow pricy Macbook Pros of 2011 and later. Some underdogs like the older HP Elitebook series offer the sex-appeal of Macbooks and can be found rather cheap in surplus warehouses, while some Dells can get you more performance for less. Anyways, awaiting the next one!
I miss my 2012 MacBook Pro. It was thicker, but it ran cooler than any of the ones since I switched to retina MBPs. I don't want an enormously thick laptop, but I want something that can effectively and efficiently remove heat and not make my keyboard (and surrounding area) almost too hot to touch...
don't you just love it when you meet someone that buys the latest mac book and then looks at you as if you are some inferior peasant with your gaming laptop.
Amen! Imagining the heat issues with this design though- and faster RAM 😡🤯. I love the neat & quiet Apple designs, but there has to be better a cooling solution.
I’m glad that apple prioritized fan speed/noise... There is nothing worse than sitting in a meeting with your laptop about to take flight with nothing but your mail client and a single tab in your browser open. If you want something that will quietly render 4K videos, get a desktop, it doesn’t even need to be a mac :)

@@lEon1l There are better ide's than xcode. Unless you need to do iOS development you don't need it. More constructively, if you are in IT and feel a bit daring you can always try a hackingtosh. If it must be Apple, and you do software development on a laptop for some strange reason instead on a desktop, the Pro's would be the obvious choice, since sofware development tend to need the CPU power and max memory. Though it entirely depends on how big projects you work on. If they are not that big (typically a student wouldn't need anything remotely powerful) , don't waste money on performance and capacity you will never use. I personally switched back to having both a desktop and a laptop as the thermal constaints and ball frying power of laptops are just a pointless nuissance as I do most of my demanding work at a desk anyway, plus desktops are really cheap compared to laptops.
lEon1l I just got the 4 core MacBook Pro for $1549.99 at Best Buy and I love it so far. Haters can easily refute me by saying you can do all that just fine with keyboard shortcuts and the trackpad, but I think it’s very cool and useful
There one thing you got wrong - you can in fact pull up the keycaps of the butterfly keys it's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. Not that it's okay that you need to do it just to keep the keyboard working though.
I suspect it's more power throttled by the bios limits than by the vrm throttling. It seems Apple actually made sure to enforce strict tdp limits this time. The 2018 MPB were released with unrestricted power limit in the bios (great on desktop, stupid on laptop), and with the anemic at best cooling solution for both the cpu and the vrm, it was only a matter of time before either of them throttled. These shouldn't have that problem.
I think they called the keyboard butterfly bechause it's as fragile as a butterfly

It's because of the shape of the switches I guess
It's because when you break one on this side of the world, a chinese sweatshop worker on the other side of the globe dies inside because they have to make another keyboard for someone

I love my Macbook Pro 2017. I don't have keyboard problems, I love the touchbar, I love the screen, I love the trackpad. Performance is fine, I however do not have a high spec model.
Emma Nieuwenhuis As long as you like it, that’s all that matters. It’s fitting your needs right?
I am using 2012 15 inch non retina macbook pro still growing strong with all ports and long travel keyboards 😃
Me too. I have 2012 15 inch MBP with 2.6ghz. I made an upgrade.. With 16 GB of ram and put an ssd Samsung Evo with 250 gb.
With all of that.. It's enough specs for me as a musician.. And to travel. I can say that 2012 is the best macbook ever made for that!
Shoutout to you tubers like this who make widescreen videos for notch phones
The ten core imac pro is still the best computer in apple's current lineup. My only mistake was not buying the 10 core and getting the 8 core, but it's still been a wonderful machine. IMHO.
You know what, I've decided you are one of the best Tech reviewers on the Tube. Really! I love how you are not just playing follow the leader as most other reviewers often do...Geekbench this, Cinebench that. Great that you add in some value added insight. Plus you are generally entertaining to boot!
BTW: As some other Tech sites are starting to do, if you really want to compare 'Apple with Apples' on the CPU front...comprehensively , then I would suggest including the Blender Render Benchmark. A real world test performance test (beyond transcoding). Keep em coming!
Super appreciate this - Know you had some video woes in the process. Was looking forward to your take, and love the depth you go to! Thank you!!
5:50 The thing I'll always love about Snazzy Labs is that these kinds of shots are used sparingly, and to such great effect. Almost spit my dinner onto my 2017 MBP keyboard. Too close for comfort.
Hahaha. Cheers! Thanks so much for your support.
Damn.. The research done for this video.. Respect!
This is the "kind" of review/video that we want to see not just a typical video that only read the description of the item. Great Job!
The hand motions this guy makes is hilarious esp the part when hes like "if youve been living under a rock" ahahah
These things are killer inconsistent. Some people are reporting as low as 2.4ghz sustained, while others report all the way up to 3.0ghz. That seems like more of a variance than just room temp
I get 2.8-2.9 when doing 100% CPU utilization benching after 20-30 min. It’s only really Prime95 SmallFFT and video exporting that bring it all the way down to 2.5GHz.

Eeehh..
I continue to have a quiet hope that the MacBook pros will be like pre-retina versions... I think those days are over.
Patrick Rushton i’ve been looking also for 2018 macbook pro. Can I ask what you bought? i5 or i7? Is it hot in your country? Thank you!
Mr Kobe Meowster I purchased the i7 2.2ghz 15” screen MacBook Pro. Yes it’s in the 80’s here where I live.
Patrick Rushton Patrick Rushton thank you! I was thinking of buying this for programming, by your statement you bought it 9 months ago. Did you buy it at a mac store? Thanks for the reply! 😁
Mr Kobe Meowster I bought it through Best Buy.
moral of the story?
*always put your macbook pro inside a freezer when exporting videos*

Just had to have my keyboard fixed a couple weeks ago. I don't know if it's this way for all Mac stores, but they were able to make the repair in the store and I had it back the next day. The guy told me that they have had to repair so many that the corporate offices decided to train people up to make the repair in-store.
Thinking of getting the 6-Core i7 version. Never had a Mac in my life. Switching from PC
I did that change about a year ago and Im still lucky about my decision
I have been using a 2014 macbook pro 15 inch i7 still works well only issue I've had recently is performance took a dive but turns out the reason why is because my battery needs to be replaced and apple slows performance when the battery goes bad luckily the full replacement is only $200 that includes the labor. Not a bad deal in my book as I will probably be able to use it for another 2-3 years.
Honestly get a 2015 maxxed out macbook pro 15". Amazing screen, amazing keyboard, pretty great processor, decent-ish thermals, and upgradable SSD!
@TranShows Puerto Rico I know some people that think this type of fan behavior is good.
So does the 6 Core also benefit from the new thermalpaste?
Haven’t tested but I’d assume yes. My 2017 13” benefitted quite a bit from a quality paste. Just beware you’ll have to replace it every 4-5 years.
Snazzy Labs well i asked the wrong question... yes it would benefit, but does it even have the new paste... or is apple keeping the good paste only for 8cores?
I’d have to imagine all the 2019 models have the new paste but I haven’t cracked one open to confirm.
Snazzy Labs thanks for answering Quinn - Love your videos
Man, this is a good review/buying advice. You did some serious testing before posting a video...thank you.
Why fix junk when people keep buying your junk.
you're absolutely right, but they tend to stick with a design for years to recover their production/r&d costs (engineering etc.).
>A small percentage -Apple
>A majority of machines -Reality
I wouldn't say a majority, most have no problems with the keyboard.
The keyboard is just unacceptable. Period.
I got my MB pro since spring 16 and my keys work perfect.. But since almost everyone owning a newer one has problems with the keys... I guess im the exception
Respect for buying the laptop for the video
Got your point but, do most of them really have to do that? it's just not equating
I don't like this.

The 2019 MacBook Pro 13 | Its Actually Pretty Good
I still use an MBA from 2014.

Apple: "What is this word, 'fix'?"
I had a 2016 macbook pro 13 inch and it broke 3 times, but at the third repair I claim for refund under consumer law and they are now replacing my computer, so we shouldn't only talk about bad things but we should share good things too, and after sales service is awesome. Consumer law claim was from UK
I don't know if it's even possible but it would be cool to see if you could fit a Lenovo Thinkpad keyboard into a MacBook Pro.
Nice video, your tests were nice and well explained!
Thank you!
"Forth redesign a charm" lol
soi shouldnt upgrade my 2016 touch br macbook pro 15?
And I'm here still with my late 2011 MacBook Air.
Missing Steve times

Raziah Aysam thank you. Google is wonderful lol I found it! I also just bought it. This is exactly what I was looking for.
Thermally throttling or just not allowing clock boosting to begin with amount to the same thing. It's just a cop out.
I finally decided to get the i7 processor 15 inch 2019 today, am tried of waiting each year lol 😆
Does the i7 15 inch 2019 throttle as well? I can't find any reviews on the i7 model.
Souvik Saha it works fine, sad part is 16 inch mac book pro came out after 6 days, bigger storage the only difference, tried to take it back, wish I bought it from Apple store the would have replaced for me easily lmao

Will you make a video about Hackintosh on laptop and change the wifi card for Bluetooth and Wifi for Airdrop?
And not to mention the displays blacking out, an issue you dont hear about a lot but has now been turned into a recall after class action lawsuit....
Apple: Why redesign the chassis, the keyboard, and the thermal solutions when people are just gonna buy the MBPs anyway?
Great video! Thanks for putting the effort into this! 👍
I miss my 2012 MacBook Pro. It was thicker, but it ran cooler than any of the ones since I switched to retina MBPs. I don't want an enormously thick laptop, but I want something that can effectively and efficiently remove heat and not make my keyboard (and surrounding area) almost too hot to touch...
could you try undervolting? it greatly improves performances on i5-8250 and the like
I am very impressed with the quality and detail of this review. Subscribed.
with 2016 pro, i swapped my keyboard twice.
Does a refurbished 2017 MBP 15 seem like decent value now ?
Probably worse than a refurbished 2011 or 2013.
great video. covered everything that matters
Idk why people are saying 'just get it fixed'. No... If I paid extra for the quality it should not fail. Also I need my laptop almost everyday.
Quality isn't stranger to taking care of.
I will not buy macbook pro until they make it same design as macbook pro 2012 with complete io and good keyboard but with modern cpu gpu and ram
don't you just love it when you meet someone that buys the latest mac book and then looks at you as if you are some inferior peasant with your gaming laptop.
Really? At $4000 with all that hardware, you can't get RAM faster than 2400mhz??!!?!?!
Buuut, the laptops that obliterate the MacBook Pro with the same CPU weigh roughly as much (+0,5kg max) and doesn't look like it was designed by a 5 year old gamer?
Great video tho (as always)
Yes. See: Razer.

Awesome video. Touches on every subject and brings a final answer based on the results from testing. Can't be much better than this really!

I have some over 20 year old rubber dome Keyboards from Dell and Fujitsu and they still work as new - even after fluid spills, tons of dust and a lot of physical abuse :^)
So do the old Apple ones before they only cared about thinness. Lol

Dell XPS or a Lenovo...
Trigger it must be a mac bc of xcode.
The Touch Bar is my fav part it makes sending emojis super easy and for the Xcode you can run, stop your program, comment out entire sections of code, and easily control volume and where you are in a video all with the Touch Bar. Haters can easily refute me by saying you can do all that just fine with keyboard shortcuts and the trackpad, but I think it’s very cool and useful

Refurbished Macbooks the way to go. Why does Apple want to make it Thinner too, is beyond me 😒
Thinner and lighter is better for portability. But I understand that thermal performance is important.
Because people keep buying it
So the thermal throttle is in the VRM, because that is cooled by conduction and not by air. So the cooler doesnt affect it.
