    Apple's redesigned MacBook Pro released in 2016 ditched all of the ports in favor of USB-C and Thunderbolt 3. The decision bothered many as did the Touch Bar-an accessory deemed too expensive and insubstantial to warrant a price hike-but the keyboard has remained the worst single problem with Apple's worst laptop lineup in decades. Reliability of the butterfly switch has been dismal at best and has soured the reputation of a once great laptop lineup. Can the new 8-core i9 CPU save MacBook Pro? No. But it fixes a lot of issues the prior models have had. That said... you should just wait for the new rumored 16-inch MacBook Pro with MicroLED display.

      It's OK though, Macbook Pros have never been called "laptops" by Apple because they would in fact sear your legs if used in that position. An egg needs to reach only about 158F to become firm, so the underside of a typical MacBook Pro can be used to make a perfect omelet whilst you use it to scroll through Kijiji in search of a more human-friendly device. If you were to wear, say, polyester fabric and mistake the mBP for a "laptop" prepare to have the upper portion of each leg surgically removed as modern medicine attempts to separate the two melded hydro carbons. There's an app called Macs Fan Control that I highly recommend; just set it to the High setting (permanently). You can also carry a large heat sink in your "laptop" bag to help dissipate the heat. The wing of an antique aircraft works well if you have access to a aerospace graveyard. Water cooling is also a fine idea, though this may generate considerable steam (beware if you use glasses).

    I had the 2018 MBP 15" i9 and had crazy throttling issues. Tried TG Kryonaut, not much difference, tried TG Conductonaut, little better but still into high 90s. That laptop cost me £3500. Sold it and bought a Gigabyte Aero 15x that has a stunning 4k Pantone Calibrated screen for £1850, which has an i7 8750h, 16GB Ram, 500gb SSD, RGB keyboard etc. Upgraded the ram to 32GB, added another 1tb SSD as it has a spare slot and it never goes above 85 degrees and that's at 3.7ghz, full pelt. So I have a 15" 4k i7 8750h, 32gb ram, 1.5tb SSD and 95wh battery (9hrs browsing, 4ish heavy work) for a grand total of £2090. Virtually identical weight, better real usage battery life, way better screen, upgradeable ram, storage, battery etc. Apple has lost its way and I will never buy an overpriced arrogance project from them again. They think that they know best. They solder the ram on as they know that if you need 3wgb ram you have no choice but to buy it from them. I upgraded my ram for a grand total of £81. The 1tb Samsung 970 Evo was £160 on offer. That's a hell of a lot less than Apple. Want a decent modern laptop without being a slave to Apple's greed. Buy a Windows Laptop such as mine.

      Apple hasn’t been “upgrading” old keyboards brought in for warranty repair with the redesigned switches if that’s what you’re wondering. They’re fixing your old shit and hoping that you’ll take care of it. When that keyboard breaks again after the 4 year program is over you are left without lube and in the assumed position to buy the new shit and shut up.

    • @schwarziex3563
      @schwarziex3563 5 лет назад +1

      @@mikaels-p6765 that is very unlikely. The whole keyboard is one sealed unit that is actually RIVETED into the topcover which warrants either the complete replacement of the top cover or you need to rip it out, thread the wholes and screw in a replacement. I can guarantee you that this will be far more expensive due to labor so they will "simply" switch the topcover.

      When the 2018 macbook pro started getting headlines about its thermal performance, apple immediately told intel to remove it's third party CPU temperature measuring application from their site.

    Keyboards, processors and thermal throttling aren’t the only issues. One can justifiably argue that storage availability is more of a hindrance than processor speed. In most cases if your processor is slow it takes a little bit longer to complete a task. But when your SSD drive is full no amount of waiting is going to rectify the problem. The previous limit of 1TB was absurdly insufficient and a principal reason why I still use a MBP with a replaceable SATA drive (2 TB). The larger storage options of the 2019 models are, at least for me, an indication that I can contemplate going shopping.

    I own a 2017 MacBook Pro 13” with touchbar (512gb intel core i5 with 8gb ram), and oh yeah. The keyboard is kinda annoying sometimes.
    I rarely get problems with the keys getting stuck and having a difficult time to press down. But Its not the end of the world. You can fix this in 3 ways.
    Number 1: Rock the key a little back and forwards if the keycap is just stuck.
    Number 2: Lift your MacBook up in the air at an angle, and blow into the keycap. Either with compressed air, or just with your mouth.
    Number 3: This can fix 2 problems. Lift your keycap up from the top with a thin, and soft, but not too flimsy piece of plastic until you hear 2 clicks. Then slide the bottom of the keycap up to remove it. Clean it, or replace it if your keycap is broken. When finished. Slide the bottom of the keycaps (There’s very small hooks in the bottom cornors of the keycap) too hook the locking mechanish, and press the top part down gently to lock the keycap in place.
    However, it’s a different story with the up and down keycaps. I don’t know how to remove them.
    Do it gently btw. I broke one of my keycaps trying to clean it. Luckily it’s only 5-10$ (35-65kr. Danish) to get a replacement.

    I only disagree with you on the performance > noise. Of course having the option is always better, but we never expect that from apple. But if they prioritized performance, people would be complaining about the noise that the computer makes all the time, not only when doing intense workloads. And as most of day to day work is not benchmarking, people wouldn't notice a 10-20% increase in performance, but would notice the laptop taking off

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n 5 лет назад +3

      This isn't a matter of prioritizing performance over noise, it's a matter of giving the hardware adequate cooling. Normal laptops don't sit at 90+ degrees while doing work. Apple's do, because that's how they design them. It drastically reduces the life of the hardware. And I'm pretty sure that's why Apple chooses to do it this way.

    • @danielkleins
      @danielkleins 5 лет назад

      I agree that this is first a design problem with the chassis. But when he put it in the freezer they had the option to boost for longer, but they decided would be better to slow the fans down. So yes, they prioritize sound over heat, but they don't keep the PC as hot as possible always.

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n 5 лет назад +1

      @@danielkleins No, you're missing the point. The whole reason why there wasn't any performance improvement when stuck IN A FREAKING FREEZER is because Apple programs the fan profiles so extremely low that they don't turn on until the CPU is baking. He even said that the whole difference was that the fans were barely spinning as opposed to making a ton of noise.
      It's not that they're trying to keep the computer hot, nobody would ever say that because that's nonsense. It's that they're allowing it to get extremely hot earlier than normal and therefore for longer periods of time thanks to an extremely conservative fan profile. This design allows the heat to ramp up to dangerous levels extremely quickly, meaning any work done is going to keep the computer at that temperature until you stop using it.
      Ultimately, it should never get as high as it does, regardless of the fan speed (and with an adequate heat sink, you can have both good cooling AND low fan noise), but Apple prefers to use the bare minimum when it comes to heat sinks, so by design they require more fan speed (and therefore noise) to maintain cooling. If noise really was the primary concern they never would have used this kind of heat sink on the chips they decided to use. So again, like I said, it has nothing to do with prioritizing performance over noise, because the entire design is a terrible compromise. They could have just as easily used lower TDP chips instead.

I love your videos, and you were the reason why I threw myself into the Hackintosh scene. Your Crapintosh video, although the system I used was different, showed me that I can get a decent performer with the hardware I have and say goodbye to unnecessary system hangs, 100% disk usage when updating a Windows Store app, and use Photoshop since using it on Linux through Wine is painful. The thing I'm interested in for your next project is another Hackintosh build (people seem to love em, after all), but more, well, portable! Using a Laptop from the last 8 years, can you get a decent alternative to the still somehow pricy Macbook Pros of 2011 and later. Some underdogs like the older HP Elitebook series offer the sex-appeal of Macbooks and can be found rather cheap in surplus warehouses, while some Dells can get you more performance for less. Anyways, awaiting the next one!

    Just because you run a computer chassis inside a cooler or freezer / fridge, does NOT mean it will run higher ... it's still throttled because the surface temperature of the chip and where it contacts with it's cooling solution (or lack there of) does not change, the machine still heats up, and because there is no thermal exchange happening, it will heat up.
    Remember, it takes like a really really long time to die in outer space from "freezing" despite you being in near absolute zero temps ... this has to do because there is nothing to "remove your heat", in fact, in space you'll overheat to death before you freeze to death. Seems so wrong but is actually very true ^^

      S A D since 2001 and yeah if u just tweak the fans then that brings out more performance. The problem is a lot of people take the stock fam curve and act like it’s the most powerful it would ever be.
      I think a little more credit is due for the form factor, if you want an extremely heavy brick of a laptop and all that performance, use a damn desktop, mini desktops work decent too. Of course not as portable as those clunky windows laptops but yeah. The form factor of that MacBook is kinda crazy and the idea is u could pretty much take it anywhere, throw a sleeve on it and you’re good, and you are still moving around an octa core laptop.
      Another thing that is overlooked is most powerful laptops are flooded with huge hunks if plastic with worse quality control than you can imagine. Practically every gaming laptop has huge flaws and defects, and they are overlooked because each one is different, where the MacBook everyone knows the keyboard is fucked because it’s just one model. And to top it off they are disgustingly thick pieces of plastic. The only thing that comes close to build quality is the Razer blades, but we all know the quality control problems are just as fucked as other manufacturers
      The thing is all laptops blow and it’s fucked, no matter what angle you look at it there is some kind of corner cut or sacrifice made.
