19:48 There is a way to do that. Since MacOS Monterey you can go to "System Preferences -> Dock & Menu Bar" At the Bottom you can then uncheck the option "Automatically hide and show the menu bar in full screen". @@snazzy You’ll be amazed at how many people were conplaining that the menu bar might be persistant in full screen mode when the macbook pros were first announced. Apparently they want full screen mode to be purely focused on the software without any distractions like the menu bar lol.
I actually like how the fullscreen mode hides the menu bar, if im in a fullscreen app I want to be immersed in that app. Another nice change here is that when hovering on the menu bar in a fullscreen app it no longer pushes down that fullscreen app which was very annoying and caused a lot of accidental clicks.
Yesssss omg that was always so annoying. And it instantly appears when you hover over it on this MacBook, before you had to hold your mouse there and wait for a moment. Then it pushes down on everything, which would sometimes even glitch out the app I was in. I just gave up and just expand the window to the corners of the screen, and I always have the dock hidden. And I changed the dock appearing speed to be instant, so as soon as my mouse is down there, it shows up
I agree with you, not hiding the menu bar in full screen mode will be contrary to the idea of full screen mode, most of the time. Now it could be an option.
Yes I agree with you. you know what makes it better? "An Option". It would be better if user had the option to hide it inside apps or no, or even better if you could choose to have it hidden in certain apps. After all I believe having options is better than having none.

The interaction with the menu bar is something developers have to put in their code, there’s documentation now. Also, personally I like using full screen as a “focus mode”, so I like the menu bar not being there, but I want it there in non-fullscreen.
17:31 So Quinn finally discovered that the macOS "'system tray"' has always been broken (when you don't use bartender)… the notch now only makes it worse.
thank you for diving deep into the notch, you're the first one i've seen who went beyond "it moves behind the notch" and actually went into experimenting with the left menu items and the right menu icons and how they would interact when the bar was full. thanks for also covering the things i never thought to wonder, like the cursor behaviour for the rounded corners, and charing from all the ports. i was really excited when they said anodised keyboard, i thought finally a company would make keys that could withstand wear and tear and not get shiny (i still love the glass trackpad for its material and not looking worn years later). but it seems like the keys themselves are still plastic and it's only the well that's anodised. not that anodising would be 100% resilient but i was wondering if it'd be (and also a grainier texture, perhaps).
I just learned this from John Siracusa yesterday. Pretty insane and can't believe that's the solution. Apple needs to Sherlock Bartender and just fix the whole issue.
19:44 because a "full screen" experience also means "no distractions", and a menu bar is a distraction... They did everything right. Would you want VLC to show the menu constantly? Even when you are watching a movie fullscreen?
I like this free form video style, haven't seen much like this on your channel before. The audio is sounding a bit echoey to me, sorry if you've addressed this in another video already! great content as always.
thank you for making the effort to get some info on how these perform NOT editing videos. as a product designer, im in a niche field that is made up of mostly pc users due to software, but as a mac user, I get by. seeing how the 3D modelers and VFX artists take advantage of the hardware is going to helpful. this is something ive been trying find to make right choice on which chip to buy.
Easy. The biggest you can get, ofc. That's 5000€ please. No, you don't need 8TB of SSD. I have *one* PC with 7TB SSD (different gens), 16 cores/32threads (R9-3950X), some decent graphics and 128GB of RAM. That thing is a monster regarding MT tasks, database and/or virtualization. Profits from parallelaccess via many PCIE lanes. So... only if you want to do something similar... 2TB of SSD should do.
re. magsafe, magnetism fades over time - very very slowly, but it’s accelerated by heat and jostling, so the magsafe on the old macbook might legitimately have been stronger back in the day. Regardless, I am SO GLAD they brought magsafe back from the dead.
All those weirdness will slowly disappear in the coming months where the apps get optimized for this machine... I guess that in 6 months the performance will be amazing and won't be any weirdness... Great approach you are choosing for this analysis... Hasta luego Quinn!
One thing I love about your video, outside of the content is the wonderful color grading, lighting and minimalistic quality of the visuals. Such a rest for my eyes 💆🏻
I am curious if a music producer could test it in a DAW like Ableton (not native). How is the latency with gear and how does it handle big libraries or heavy VST plugins? Great video!
Please compare the speakers on the 14 and 16 inch models. As far as i can recall in the keynote, they kinda emphasize the 14 not having the same true 6 speaker system like the 16” model.if there is any substanstial difference in real world testing
A couple thoughts on the notch: The necessary UI decision makers seem to have followed in Jobs' minimalist footsteps and so they didn't think anyone would have enough status icons for it to be a problem. As for full-screen + notch: the reason the menu at disappears in fullscreen isn't because the space is needed; only a few apps have specific aspect ratios to their content. The menubar disappears because someone decided that that was a useful/valuable UX. If you want an interface option "uncluttered" by the menubar (but still cluttered by like toolbars and such, apparently?) then you don't want the menubar visible just because there's more space on your screen.
Damn that notch is janky. I was skeptical and curious about the sofware solutions they had for it and really hoped the "appled" it. But no that's some A level jankiness. I hope they fix that with future versions of MacOS Edit: The rest of it is amazing though.
the app menus taking over the right side menus are not new to this mac, it happens on all macs. the easiest way to do this is by setting a mac to a really low resolution or connecting a really old monitor to it. I would say istat probably needs an update for the new macs to handle it properly. any yes apple could help with updating
Guys, go to settings > desktop & dock, then set automatically hide the menu bar to never, and the menu bar will stay in its place even in fullscreen mode.

got to ask. Was that a 14" or 16" MacBook Pro used in that review and what was the screen size? I'm wondering if the 16" model would have the same issues with the menu bar due to its much bigger screen size and resolution. I always run at max res (more space option) Also, it appears you need 2tb or higher storage to get the higher speed SSD
@@jkitsme1508 It must be must be set to a lower resolution. Then again I never use the default resolution on MacBook Pros and always find myself going for more space.
Do you think that these chips could eventually have a high performance mode where they chew more power but output a crap ton of performance? I think that since they use less power and therefore run cooler; they could get OverVolted.
They already do! You just have to go into the battery section of System Preferences and change the energy mode from automatic to high power while it’s both plugged into the wall, and on battery.
Macs have some annoying quirks, but once you learn how to change some options around you’ll realize the reliability and consistency is so much better and worth it.

Curious how iStatMenus looks when you change the display to "More Space" scaling. Also worried the menu bar will look insane in 'More Space' because it can't get thinner due to the notch...
I went and checked one out at an Apple Store today, didn’t have iStatMenus but I can confirm that with “More Space” display scaling the menu bar stays the same height while all the items in it get smaller. Looks a bit strange but makes sense given the notch.
18:49 - you can go to System Preferences > Dock & Menu Bar > Uncheck ‘Automatically hide and show the menu bar in full screen’. Now you will always have a menu bar while in full screen.
suggestion: also do the testing for engineering software thats windows only. most mainstream engineering software still only available in windows, im a geotechnical engineer and plaxis is really heavy on your pc if you dont simplify your design i want to see how new macbook fare against that and also dont forget autocad
(1) menu bar items on the right always disappeared when the menu was too large with no way to access them. (2) the “warp” across the notch when using menus is inconsistent with normal cursor movement but is consistent with menu operation; since the menus straddle the notch so does the cursor. I.e. when you invoke a menu you’re navigating menu space not your normal screen space; users are used to subsequent menus immediately popping open as they scrub over them, if there were a dead space it would feel unnatural. Similarly warping or colliding with the notch when just moving your cursor around would feel unnatural. (3) there is a new option in settings to always have menus enabled in full-screen mode. (4) as far as I stay menus extending behind the notch, yeah. Got me there.
i think the reason the cursor doesnt stop when hitting the notch in the middle, is because it would be annoying if you quickly tried to travel the cursor across the screen, like it would be in the way of the user. the rounded corners however doesnt effect the user experience, so its a nice touch
The way software interacts with the notch is how I would expect a Windows machine to deal with it. Apple is supposed to be the company that puts more effort into the user experience. Very weird and kinda worrying.
Apple redefined the word "Recycling" to mean throw it away and buy a new one. Also buy the one with 16GB of ram or more to decrease teh probability of swapping to the SSD if RAM runs out and that helps extend the lifespan of the SSD.

In certain contexts like, watching movies, you don't want the menu bar to always be showing so it's fine to auto hide it. That's ok. But the whole menu bar items disappearing needs work. All they have to do is add a pulldown menu to reveal unseen menu bar items when menus fill the menu bar. Very simple solution.
Now that's the true detailed review. Things like charging, Thunderbolt throughput, headphones - thank you very much for the details. First video I saw on this channel and I subscribed after first 7 minutes of the video.
I hate to be that guy with the teardown part, but: - Screw bit is P5, not P3, to remove bottom plate. - They *have* put the battery right on top/behind the trackpad in previous models; it's been standard for years now. The interaction with the menu bar is something developers have to put in their code, there’s documentation now. Also, personally I like using full screen as a “focus mode”, so I like the menu bar not being there, but I want it there in non-fullscreen.
You way of presenting any product/detail/idea, in any videos. It is just awesome
It’s been a thing in macos for a long time that menu applets on the right get hidden by menu options on the left when there’s too many.
Exactly. The notch may make this more common but it’s been a design “feature” for 20 years. 🙄
"It's a feature not a bug"
jup, in more character rich laguages it‘s quite common. Just switch to finder to see the rest
@@outofahat9363 They specifically added code to do it so yeah.
I just learned this from John Siracusa yesterday. Pretty insane and can't believe that's the solution. Apple needs to Sherlock Bartender and just fix the whole issue.
Congrats on 1 mil!
21:23 Legends say Rob is still saying "Keyboard feel, keyboard feel"
Lmao
19:57: There's a new option in System Preferences -> Dock & Menu Bar -> Automatically hide and show the menu bar in full screen.
Saludos!
@@snazzy Buenos días, señor Quinn. Cómo estás?
One thing I love about your video, outside of the content is the wonderful color grading, lighting and minimalistic quality of the visuals. Such a rest for my eyes 💆🏻
I am curious if a music producer could test it in a DAW like Ableton (not native). How is the latency with gear and how does it handle big libraries or heavy VST plugins? Great video!
Best thumbnail I’ve seen in a while. Excellent work snazzy labs!
Thank you!
Is it just me or there is a weird tint shift at 0:51
I saw it too
nope white balance changed lol
This is the funniest, most in depth, most entertaining and informative first Impressions I have ever seen. Subbed
Thanks, and welcome!
Please compare the speakers on the 14 and 16 inch models. As far as i can recall in the keynote, they kinda emphasize the 14 not having the same true 6 speaker system like the 16” model.if there is any substanstial difference in real world testing
A couple thoughts on the notch:
The necessary UI decision makers seem to have followed in Jobs' minimalist footsteps and so they didn't think anyone would have enough status icons for it to be a problem.
I hope they fix that with future versions of MacOS
Edit: The rest of it is amazing though.
the app menus taking over the right side menus are not new to this mac, it happens on all macs. the easiest way to do this is by setting a mac to a really low resolution or connecting a really old monitor to it. I would say istat probably needs an update for the new macs to handle it properly. any yes apple could help with updating
Guys, go to settings > desktop & dock, then set automatically hide the menu bar to never, and the menu bar will stay in its place even in fullscreen mode.
Colour grading change at 0:52? ;)
Thanks for this Snazzy. It answered a lot of my questions. My 16 inch MacBook Pro arrived today and so far I’ve been really impressed coming from a 2015 13 inch MacBook Pro. No thermal throttling and noisy fans.
I would love to find out how this does 3D modelling in SketchUp and rendering in Vray so I'm really looking forward to at least see some 3D modelling/rendering tests! :D
Cinebench R23 please.
2012 was the last macbook pro i bought... apple finally remembered what pro means - and what pros find useful. great vids. ty
got to ask. Was that a 14" or 16" MacBook Pro used in that review and what was the screen size?
I'm wondering if the 16" model would have the same issues with the menu bar due to its much bigger screen size and resolution. I always run at max res (more space option)
Also, it appears you need 2tb or higher storage to get the higher speed SSD
It was the 16in with M1 Max 64GB
@@jkitsme1508 It must be must be set to a lower resolution. Then again I never use the default resolution on MacBook Pros and always find myself going for more space.
Thank you Snazzy Labs for properly sorting out the this ‘notch problem’ instead of just hating and complaining about it. Thank you, you are awesome!
@@ardentvibe6917 Only on the 16 inch version though if i remember correctly.
@@MADDGAMMER Yes and only with the Max chip too, I think.
@@binkey3374 well, I happened to have bought that exact variation, so I definitely cannot confirm. Haha.
Thank you. You're the best YT reviewer for thorough information.
Not going to lie I’ve seen hours of reviews on these computers. Even though I bought it a week ago Haha. It will be my first Mac ever!
Dang, great time to jump into MacOS! Congrats!
Same first time owning a mac
You’re gonna love it
Macs have some annoying quirks, but once you learn how to change some options around you’ll realize the reliability and consistency is so much better and worth it.
@@harrison2899 true. Even my Mom and Dad have not shifted from apple ever since they first bought iPhones and Macbooks because they are uncomplicated, secure, and last a long time. Sure, user has less control, but lots of people just want something that works and will continue to work for a long time. My mom still uses her iPhone 5 as a backup phone.
19:50 it's a setting to leave all the time the menu bar in full screen--> automatically hide and show the menu bar in fullscreen , uncheck this
Well this one gone be my evening watch. Was waiting for your opinion.
Favorite tech hang on the RUclipss. Always love these videos.
Now you will always have a menu bar while in full screen.
suggestion: also do the testing for engineering software thats windows only. most mainstream engineering software still only available in windows, im a geotechnical engineer and plaxis is really heavy on your pc if you dont simplify your design i want to see how new macbook fare against that and also dont forget autocad
yes, this
(1) menu bar items on the right always disappeared when the menu was too large with no way to access them.
I am eating and drinking.
must be done to sustain life. nice work.
@@snazzy I ate brick dust and drank paint.
I feel unsustained.
i think the reason the cursor doesnt stop when hitting the notch in the middle, is because it would be annoying if you quickly tried to travel the cursor across the screen, like it would be in the way of the user. the rounded corners however doesnt effect the user experience, so its a nice touch
The way software interacts with the notch is how I would expect a Windows machine to deal with it. Apple is supposed to be the company that puts more effort into the user experience. Very weird and kinda worrying.
Windows have an overflow section on the taskbar that have existed for decades. So hell no, you shouldn't expect this on Windows.
Please don’t worry
Buy a chromebook
I think it's bugged currently, there's supposed to be something to deal with menu bar items when they would otherwise go under the notch.
This is the perfect format for reviewing these machines holy s**t for all things Snazzy Labs! Well done sir
Also TY?????? lol
I’d be interested in some tests with crossover and parallels to see how it performs with windows emulation.
I think there was some channel that did do this but with games primarily.
Where is the performance testing promised in other professional applications
Why does nobody talk about how all this macbooks are trash after the ssd gives out? There is no way to replace it so the whole machine goes to waste.
Apple redefined the word "Recycling" to mean throw it away and buy a new one. Also buy the one with 16GB of ram or more to decrease teh probability of swapping to the SSD if RAM runs out and that helps extend the lifespan of the SSD.
Excellent review you've made me even more excited and confirmed my decision to go M1MAX. Looking forward to my MBP M1 MAX 64GB 8Tb when it arrives mid Nov.
Is using the phrase “Holly Smokes” the right one to use while talking about a laptop?
You can enable a persistent menu bar in full-screen mode in System Preferences > Dock & Menu Bar > uncheck "Automatically hide and show the menu bar in full screen"
Thanks for doing the light tear down - curious if the 16” has significantly better thermals than the 14” with the M1 Pro.
Would also love to see a music production test with high voice count synths / virtual instruments :)
was waiting for your first MacBook Pro video!
But why is he complaining about the menue bar not staying in full screen when he didn't even enable this behavior in settings
Yeah, the menu bar should disappear in full screen, it would be annoying otherwise. Maybe on a per-app basis it could be changed but for videos it would be distracting.
Best review I’ve seen so far. Congratulations for getting end user’s questions answered. So professional and effective! ❤️
Congrats on 1M subs man. Love your reviews and tech knowledge!
Man! Now this is a super nice review! I love you actually listen back to your audience and answer to real questions of real people! Everybody else just reads the specs and makes benchmarks. You, on the other side, just answer our “mere mortal” questions! Thanks man! Keep this up please!
You answered all questions in amazing depth … hats off to u !! Love it
I love how objective and nerdy the SnazyLabs reviews are (and also not only focusing on benchmarks and videos editing)
I hate to be that guy with the teardown part, but:
- Screw bit is P5, not P3, to remove bottom plate.
- They *have* put the battery right on top/behind the trackpad in previous models; it's been standard for years now. The only deviation was the 12" MacBook that had the battery adhered to the bottom plate.
Liked and subbed as always though! Great video.
Thanks for understanding that not pro mac users are youtubers (or other kinds of video editors). Looking forward to the announced video!
Your review is pretty technical and insightful .. unlike other you tubers amateur reviews
I thought your videos weren’t good. But boy!!, Now I think you are the best YT tech reviewer!!!!! 🤩
These more spontaneous videos are really fun to watch
Best channel on reviewing the MBP so far!! 17:31 is an important segment to watch.
nice video, besides your LUT's going crazy at 0:51, awesome
this guy makes most informative and entertaining videos ever , never gets board :) , awsome video
15:08 It makes sense the OS still renders the pixels behind the notch because that's what happens on FaceID iPhones, it would be weird if it didn't.
