This is wasteful unless you are rich, live in a great year round climate or your diet is primarily beans. Maybe all three factors are at play here? The husband really needs a steak though. He looks lifeless and depressed. As long as its a boneless steak, there is no waste. I think the main point however is that they recycle and compost. Most people just throw away.
I used reusable bags for produce and groceries and honestly feel so proud and guilt-free! I am a 14-year-old vegan and I am so happy my mum finally agreed to buy the produce bags because they were expensive and NO ONE uses them pretty much in Dubai!!

It is important to acknowledge that this family is capable of living this way because they have enough space/live in the right climate to grow their own food AND that it is really the co-op being open to you bringing your own containers that allows them to live this way. There are no stores like this in my area (and I assume many areas in the US), so it would not be possible for most people to make this drastic of a change. I hope in the future we will have more stores that encourage waste-free purchases.
I don't have stores like that I my area. I love the planet though so I still took on a plant based diet and I buy as many biodegradable products that I can afford online. Even small changes count.

Practically it's not possible for most people( cause firstly finding a shop like that is rare and buying jars and stuff is expensive for some) but we can still try to create " less waste" like we can less start using ur own cloth bags instead of multiple plastic ones and also reuse the plastic containers you get from maybe purchasing a product from the store etc and it's gonna really work. This is so inspiring. I was recently at the hospital and have changed my diet as well. I eat more raw vegan now for 2 months and have notice that I don't have a lot of trash, have a lot of compost for my garden and a lot of recycling. Trying to not buy anything with plastic anymore.

I totally support the zero waste lifestyle but I think especially for families which aren't living in the best circumstances and just can't afford buying high quality products which are mostly not packed in plastic is very difficult.
This is an extreme, radical (and amazing!) lifestyle, so don’t be intimidated bc you can’t do all this. We ALL can make small changes in our lives that have a significant impact: bring you own cup/straws/utensils to reduce single-use plastic, refuse to buy plastic, use a reusable grocery bag, get less takeout food bc of all the packaging.

What people don't understand about buying in bulk is that of course you don't create waste. The store takes the products out of several packaging layers...the shipping box, the general plastic wrap to hold multiple boxes together, and the abundance of plastic and cardboard inside each box. Just because you didn't bring home the packaging does not mean that waste wasn't created or that it doesn't exist. They just throw it away for you. Ive always hated the term "Zero Waste" or people that claim they live a zero waste life because that isn't true. Had you said "we buy in bulk because we don't want to deal with trash because it clears my conscience and makes me think that I'm doing the planet a service" then that's another story. Buying bulk comes down to this: 1. Pay more money (usually) to get the unpacked product and we'll dispose of the packaging INSTEAD of pay less money for the product with the packaging that you'll have to throw away Personally if you want to be green, buy the packaged product! You can still put rice and beans in a mason jar of that tickles your fancy. Just recycle the plastics and cardboard or compost the cardboard. Bring your own grocery bags. This way you know that the "waste" isn't really waste and end up in a landfill or the ocean...you know that the waste is being put to good use while most companies throw the trash away (such as stores who have the buy-in-bulk options)
While I do agree that actual zero waste is very very difficult, buying bulk is still significantly less waste than buying packaged goods that you're going to throw away after using that good. Please explain to me how a store restocking their large container of rice with one large bag of rice is more waste than the smaller packaged bags of rice that people buy and dispose. It's simple geometry regarding volume and surface area.

As easy as it is to make fun of new agey families like this, I'm personally elated to know that there are children being raised with a sense of environmental responsibility as well as knowing how to grow their own food and the ability to make healthy choices in terms of their diet. This way they don't end up with diabetes at the age of 12 or become severely obese later and dependant on the state because of it. Teaching them environmental responsibility through being low waste will also hopefully translate into the children knowing personal responsibility as a whole.
I think learning to reduce the waste you produce is very important to learn and to teach... but, are you implying that everyone that is not zero waste is obese and has diabetes? I personally don't have a swimming pool or take baths... And recycle as much as I can... Also, I feel that buying fruits and vegetables without plastic packaging in my country is not complicated...

Yes, the child may choose to live differently but the lesson will always stay with them. My family wasn’t poor but my mom still always was very frugal. Even though I don’t save money to the extent that she did, she still taught me to watch where your money goes and that helps me a lot.

Practically it's not possible for most people( cause firstly finding a shop like that is rare and buying jars and stuff is expensive for some) but we can still try to create " less waste" like we can less start using ur own cloth bags instead of multiple plastic ones and also reuse the plastic containers you get from maybe purchasing a product from the store etc and it's gonna really work. This is so inspiring. I was recently at the hospital and have changed my diet as well. I eat more raw vegan now for 2 months and have notice that I don't have a lot of trash, have a lot of compost for my garden and a lot of recycling. Trying to not buy anything with plastic anymore.

I totally support the zero waste lifestyle but I think especially for families which aren't living in the best circumstances and just can't afford buying high quality products which are mostly not packed in plastic is very difficult.
Cuentya Lee if I am not mistaken, vegetables and fruits usually don’t come in packaging and are a lot cheaper than meat & microwave meals.

We ALL can make small changes in our lives that have a significant impact: bring you own cup/straws/utensils to reduce single-use plastic, refuse to buy plastic, use a reusable grocery bag, get less takeout food bc of all the packaging.

What people don't understand about buying in bulk is that of course you don't create waste. The store takes the products out of several packaging layers...the shipping box, the general plastic wrap to hold multiple boxes together, and the abundance of plastic and cardboard inside each box. Just because you didn't bring home the packaging does not mean that waste wasn't created or that it doesn't exist. They just throw it away for you.
Ive always hated the term "Zero Waste" or people that claim they live a zero waste life because that isn't true. Had you said "we buy in bulk because we don't want to deal with trash because it clears my conscience and makes me think that I'm doing the planet a service" then that's another story.
Buying bulk comes down to this:
1. Pay more money (usually) to get the unpacked product and we'll dispose of the packaging INSTEAD of pay less money for the product with the packaging that you'll have to throw away
Personally if you want to be green, buy the packaged product! You can still put rice and beans in a mason jar of that tickles your fancy. Just recycle the plastics and cardboard or compost the cardboard. Bring your own grocery bags. This way you know that the "waste" isn't really waste and end up in a landfill or the ocean...you know that the waste is being put to good use while most companies throw the trash away (such as stores who have the buy-in-bulk options)

While I do agree that actual zero waste is very very difficult, buying bulk is still significantly less waste than buying packaged goods that you're going to throw away after using that good. Please explain to me how a store restocking their large container of rice with one large bag of rice is more waste than the smaller packaged bags of rice that people buy and dispose. It's simple geometry regarding volume and surface area.

As easy as it is to make fun of new agey families like this, I'm personally elated to know that there are children being raised with a sense of environmental responsibility as well as knowing how to grow their own food and the ability to make healthy choices in terms of their diet.
This way they don't end up with diabetes at the age of 12 or become severely obese later and dependant on the state because of it.
Teaching them environmental responsibility through being low waste will also hopefully translate into the children knowing personal responsibility as a whole.
I think learning to reduce the waste you produce is very important to learn and to teach... but, are you implying that everyone that is not zero waste is obese and has diabetes?
I personally don't have a swimming pool or take baths... And recycle as much as I can... Also, I feel that buying fruits and vegetables without plastic packaging in my country is not complicated...

Yes, the child may choose to live differently but the lesson will always stay with them. My family wasn’t poor but my mom still always was very frugal. Even though I don’t save money to the extent that she did, she still taught me to watch where your money goes and that helps me a lot.
