Awesome review. I struggle with very cold toes and have an issue because I need a 14 in La Sportive to fit properly in the toe box. I’m going for the G2’s. It sucks to have cold toes.
thank you so much Ryan! This helped me solidify my decision! Espcially now that i'm getting into dry tooling and ice climbing. And funny that I found it right as i'm heading to Ouray
Awesome review!!! i got the g2 for winter mountainering and ice climbing also i have a problem with the heel and every pair of boots with hard heed destrois my feet in half an hour... so.. double boots was the answer for me (ideea copied from my sky mountainering boot)
My G5's are just about retired, the toe is almost completely gone. I use the G2's a lot less so they're still going, I would say they have about 1-2 years of life left in them.
Couple of questions for you. Did you have any discomfort at the lower shin/upper top of foot with the G2 SM’s. What an awesome boot but I couldn't bring myself to keep them. I’ve read that is a common problem. 2nd, this years (2021) G2 evo.. is this the updated version of the G2 SM?
Ya, there was a small stitched section on the top of the gator that was causing some rubbing on one of the boots. If you use some longer socks that stretch above the boot that won’t happen, or some thermal leggings under your pants. I checked out the evo models, I couldn’t find to many pictures of the inside of the boots but they do seem to be an updated model for both the boots. I guess we’ll have to see for sure what is truly different about them or what’s been improved. I didn’t experience any shin pain at all.
I wear a size 42.5 for almost all my footwear, so the Nepal and the G5 are both 42.5 but I got the G2 in 43.5. Looking back I think I would’ve done the G2 in a 43 and only go up the half size.
It would be a little thin for Aconcagua, most people use at minimum a double boot like the spantik or G2SM, but a lot of people also like using an 8000m boot like the Olympus mons or the phantom 8000
Thanks for the detailed review of both the boots. I own G2 SM’s and am planning to invest in a single mountaineering boot. Since I am familiar with the G2SM model, am leaning towards buying the G5 Evo. Do you think these will work for an April Mt Shasta climb? I do tend to be on the colder side slightly but am hoping that with liner socks, medium weight hiking socks, it should be good for winter 5000m peak climbs. Contemplating between La Sportiva Nepal Cube GTX vs G5 Evo-Appreciate your thoughts on this, thanks in advance!
Hey sorry for the late reply, you could maybe get away with the G5’s in late April if there’s not to much snow on the climb and it’s a warm day. It is tough to say because I’ve havn’t been on Shasta a whole lot so I don’t know the mountain as well as someone who climbs it all the time.
just curious: what crampons are you using with both of these boots? And fit? I wore a 43 in nepal cubes-last year. Now suddenly they feel too tight😫. Am torn between g2 sm and g5. both are on sale in my area to make room for new g2 evo and g5 evo. I like the idea of a removeable liner for winter camping and ice climbing...but don’t want to have heel slop or be too warm. temps between -20 and 0 Celsius. What do you say?
I think they fit the same, I havn't tried the G2 evo personally, but I have friends that have them and they wear the same size as the G2SM. The biggest difference is the Evo has a waterproof layer where as the G2SM is just snow proof.
You mainly climb on the seracs at the base of a glacier for Washington ice climbing. As far as finding partners your best bet is to go onto the Internet forums and ask around, it can be kind of cruxy to get ice climbing partners in Washington.

one of the best reviews i'

Nice review - good talking points on weight, when to use, comfort, etc. Cheers!

Saw you were watching Lhotse from the North Face... I love it!
thanks for sharing the wisdom. How are they holding up after a few years, sir?
My G5's are just about retired, the toe is almost completely gone. I use the G2's a lot less so they're still going, I would say they have about 1-2 years of life left in them.
The boa system is also often used for cycling cleats. I have a pair for my mountain bike that has been super durable.

Hi.
What size do you usually wear and what size are your G2?
Cuz I'm buying those boots but I don't if 1 size more will be enough.
great review , love the boots.
did you have to change shoe size from the La sportiva Nepal to these boots?
I wear a size 42.5 for almost all my footwear, so the Nepal and the G5 are both 42.5 but I got the G2 in 43.5. Looking back I think I would’ve done the G2 in a 43 and only go up the half size.
Very nice review. Thanks!
Thanks for the review! Cool stuff
Thanks for the review, would G5 be okay on aconcagua?
It would be a little thin for Aconcagua, most people use at minimum a double boot like the spantik or G2SM, but a lot of people also like using an 8000m boot like the Olympus mons or the phantom 8000
Nice Review Ryan... it helps!👌
For a little more $ seems the G2SM is better all arounder if you can only buy one? Any opinions on scarpa vs Sportiva?

Thanks for the information just great 👍
What’s the difference between the G2SM and the G2 Evo ? Do they fit the same ?

What if i added boot liner to g5 would that work for an occasional trip to 6-6500meter and g5 without liner for everyday use
I am having La Sportiva Ultra Rapter size 10.5 US. Do I need to size up for g2 or g5?
Can you talk about how to loosen the gaiters once you pull them to tighten it ? I can’t get to loosen it
Ryan: I also live in the Washington. can you give me ideas of where in Washington to Ice Climb or how ot meet other Ice Climbers?
You mainly climb on the seracs at the base of a glacier for Washington ice climbing. As far as finding partners your best bet is to go onto the Internet forums and ask around, it can be kind of cruxy to get ice climbing partners in Washington.
Can boa system if damaged can be repaired or replaced ?
As far as I can tell it can’t be replaced or la sportiva doesn’t repair broken boa straps.
Hi, Do you have same size g2sm and g5? Thanks
No, my usual boot size is 42.5 and that’s the size of the G5’s, but I use the 43.5 for the G2 SM’s
Does the G5 fit the same size as your Nepal?
Ya, I got the same size and it fits about the same as the Nepal.
🥰🥰🥰 very interesting
This review was burly, buying a pair today G5s today..thanks
first
Nice review! Thank you!
