@@ryanhelm1813 Did you see the way his mother chided Randyl? And even his sister had the balls to say something she probably knew would get under his skin. Having the balls/courage to actually both do and say is the foundation of military strength, which is what the Tarly’s are known for.
@@nategraham6946 okay, so maybe he doesn't fit into the Tarly family mold, but that doesn't mean he isn't a vastly more important character than the other Tarly members, and he proves his competency in ways other than fighting, like using his brain to learn things to fight the long night and heal people. I will admit, they did him dirty in the show by making people keep having to sacrifice themselves for Sam.

The most important part about his father, is that he sent Sam to the wall, where he met Jon, and that his dad was a major jackass to Sam and Gilly. Sam's mother spoke uo against his father bc, yes she does have more courage than Sam,and she knew his dad was being cruel, but that doesn't mean Sam wasn't capable of great things, he killed the 1st white walker in a 1000 years or something and discovered dragonglass was they key.
