    People who say it is too easy forget that you still have to keep the bird in the frame, position yourself well, think about composition, etc. Fun video with birds many of us wish were available in our own backyards. :)

      definitely, keeping the birds in the frame is still very hard and I missed a lot of shots. In a another video soon, I am trying kingfishers in full flight, not take off....that was hard :D

    Jan, you might consider a special series on how to set your backyard... certainly beside your incredible location, there are many subtle and few overt (food) tricks that you utilize to set a bird oasis. Clearly, even the position and distance between the upper perches respective to next level, and to the feeder dishes allows for amazing shooting opportunities with full wingspan and with gorgeous distant (out-of-focus) background for your camera shots. There are many tips for all levels of bird photography. It was a wonderful video!

    Love the kookaburra intro 🙂 A9 III is definitely not cheating, I own the Sony A1 and bird in flight is still fairly difficult because I simply don't have the personal skills and experience practicing it. You can hand a beginner a $20,000 camera and it's not a magic switch to taking amazing photos, it's all about experience and developing skills over time, also a camera isn't going to help you find rare birds!

    • @scottwilliamsoutdoors
      @scottwilliamsoutdoors 5 месяцев назад +4

      Yeah Kurtis - the old adage of expensive knives do not make a chef. I suspect if most of us sat with Jan in his backyard shooting constantly for several days our skills and keeper rate would skyrocket. But I would still love an A9III - just as a BIF body, you know, just as a spare in case I need it.

    Hi Jan,
    I normally like your videos a lot, and the today’s video make’s me think an laugh!
    Your last argument it’s absolutely correct, but, I surprised myself thinking… “I wonder if one day I could buy a kit camera-lens and tell them to go walk my Dog, buy me a couple of fresh colas, and if it’s not too much trouble, take to me 10 photos of a beautiful bird (nothing specific because today I don’t wanna think to much) with a beautiful Jan,s W. background.
    WOW, such a wonderful world it will be! 😂
    Take this with humour, it’s not criticism. It’s indeed simple humour!
    Having more than 35 years shooting wildlife-photography, sometimes I think that it’s simply to much! Don’t want to loose the fear, don’t want to loose the fun!

    Nice video Jan , great camera ,photographs and great photos too. My observations on your videos and Duade as I only follow the two of you in Australia. I've observed that birds in Australia are not afraid of people they can allow you to get very close and afford you a great opportunity to photograph them . I live in South Africa it's only a few places where wild birds can give you that opportunity. Because they're hunted in many parts of Africa.

      It all depends where you are and if you can find the right spots. There are tame birds everywhere if you look around. I have loved in Vancouver, Austin, Berlin and I found birds in all places.

      Yes, the mics pick up a lot. The sound got a bit funky when I tried the internal Noice cancellation for a while. I shouldn't;t have done that, but couldn't;t refill everything.

    Very impressive. I've tried this with the R5, RF 1-5 on song birds near a feeder and I easily burned through 5 thousand shots just to get a couple keepers. I was not very successful compared to your results in this video. My biggest problem was trying to keep the BIF in the EVF. The movement is so fast, and sometimes erratic. Kind regards.

    • @jan_wegener

      Yes that’s the hardest part. My main issue with the R5 is that I always get bad wing poses, it almost never seems to be in the right rhythm to give me the banking pose. Must be the 20fps not being a frequency birds flap in

    Jan, great video of some of Australia's beautiful birds. As for the Sony A9 III, some reviewers complain that its global shutter reduces resolution and that the camera lacks the dynamic range of the A9 II. What has been your experience here, compared to previous cameras you have owned? It obviously delivers the goods when doing flight photography, but is its price worth it for the wildlife photographer who does flight photography but also photographs other subjects where there is little quick action?

    • @jan_wegener

      @@jan_wegener As I recall, the general thrust was that the A9 III was a great camera for those who photograph sporting events, e.g. basketball - lots of split-second action. Such images will soon be used/published, so it is not critical that they be extremely sharp and lack noise. The implication was that for the latter two features, there are better cameras out there, even the A9 II.

    As for the mic, my first thought was "there is something wrong with the sound". I really think it doesn't sound good.
    As for the A9iii, it's very good as it is. But you were shooting very tight. If you had a 45 MP sensor doing similar FPS, you could use a 400 mm and have even more keepers. Let's see what Canon delivers with the R5ii and the R1.

    While certainly fantastic images - I have a critique? well really a question or maybe just a statement :) - I'll let you decide. I think with your set-ups there it would be much easier to captures the stunning pics you did, because after a while you'll get to notice a "pattern" with the birds that are coming there? plus, you're nice and close so the 24 - megapixels wouldn't really see any issue's there either? do you plan to go out and about with the set-up to see how it performs in everyday conditions? Thanks

      @renestaempfli1071 5 месяцев назад

      It's not easier at all in my opinion. I am not a wildlife photographer, but I shoot sports and rock concerts with a lot of very fast action. The A9III is not the limiting factor. It's your level of skills. You have to practice a lot to master this camera and configure it in an optimal way to be as efficient as possible in your genre.

    • @TheWildlifeGallery388
      @TheWildlifeGallery388 5 месяцев назад

      @@renestaempfli1071 - let me disagree with you for just an instant and an example - you have a starting pitcher throwing a ball 60-feet to a batter - it's the same distance every time - you train your focus on the plane (path) where the bat should connect with the ball - over the course of several innings you'll figure the Caidence of the pitcher and eventually you'll get the shot - bat hitting ball - in the process taking hundreds of photo's or maybe even thousands for that 1 pic -now relief pitcher comes in - how long does it take for you to get the same shot? bat hitting ball - now walk down the street and have someone throw a ball from behind a building - did you get the shot? even if you knew it was coming odds are you didn't - and at most had up to a 100 photo's (chances) why? because it wasn't staged or repetitive enough? while it may not be easy, it's easier when you know you're going to have another chance from the same direction. my last point would be Jans own words when he started the video as to why he was in his backyard - I'm paraphrasing here - because it was predictable where the birds would land - top perch first - then fly down to the lower one. Lastly, I'm NOT knocking the approach, I'm truly interested in how the set-up performs in the "real world" let's say.

      @@TheWildlifeGallery388 I shoot things like swallows, martins and parrots in flight and the A93 crushes the A1 for acquisition speed and accuracy of focus tracking. Not to even mention that at 120fps you get dozens of wings poses in a fraction of a second. I'm still using the Canon 5D4 and looking to upgrade.
    Can EF lenses be adapted for Sony?
    How efficient is the AF if so?
    My EF L lenses need adapting for use on any mirrorless, but I assume that the Canon mirrorless might be more efficient - but by how much?
    I'm tired of Canon's low-pass filter and several other issues.
    I have a lot of L lenses and might be able to purchase only a single Sony telephoto lens - would it be worthwhile for me to change brands?

      @@jan_wegener The base ISO being 250, dynamic range and the high ISO noise performance. A super fast stacked sensor is still, overall, a better bet. A stacked sensor with a mechanical shutter/sensor readout speed would be ideal for 99.999% of people. The sensor in my R6 ii is staggering in its performance, but the slower readout speed means a lot of deleted shots with oval balls that need to be round, and bird wings that looks funky. I have found that for sports if you're panning in the same direction as a ball is travelling you negate the rolling shutter distortion largely, which is nice :)
