Wait a minute -- they can wait until you're asleep to put in the IV??? I recently had polyp removal surgery and the IV was the most painful part of the entire process, it was even very painful when I was waking up.
In many routine pediatric cases, yes. But not in every situation - nature of the surgery, anatomy and physiology of a specific patient, etc… Usually not a great idea in adults from a safety perspective for a variety of reasons.
