All of my surgeries in a children’s hospital took place in Michigan at the Children’s Hospital in Detroit. My first surgery I did not use the mask because I don’t know if they were available back in 1980. However, in 1982 they were available my first surgery 1980 was a cordial transplant that kept me in there for a week. I remember whole lot of that the good the bad in the in between. I had been to this hospital between 1980 and 1982 and every time that I was there, really weird things would happen so when I was told to come for a surgery in 1982, I cried my eyes out in the waiting room. The only thing that helped calm me down in my version of child life back, then was the LED display on the digital thermometers of the day. Every time afterward, when I would come, my parents would make it sound like a really big event, emphasizing the cherry balloon or the cherry mask. Cherry would be my flavor of choice for all of my surgeries that were to come in the next year. I hated waking up, and I hated waking up with the IV in my hand. in 1991, I had more eye surgery and this time when I started to breathe in the mask, I actually felt really good about getting high off of the gases in the mask. I never would’ve thought that I would have anything to do with children’s Hospital Michigan as an adult but I volunteered there for a couple of years well was finding work. I interviewed for several positions in a lot of the neighboring hospitals that were around children’s Hospital, but never any posit at Children’s Hospital itself.
I would recommend if they have a Nintendo switch that will make a HUGE difference and I had my phone. I would recommend a phone or tablet with pictures of family and friends. I had a video of my 2 year old niece which put me at ease
I had surgery as a child and I wish I had been prepared this well! They also didnt do the "flavored" air or mask. They preferred you were completely asleep and my Mom was not brought back to the OR.
I never got to experience flavors as all of my surgeries have been as an adult. :( I wish there were flavors (particularly grown up ones) that could be injected into the iv, like ube
I had surgery on my eyes on march 10 2022 and I was so scared about it during the surgery I didn’t feel anything because I was asleep and when I woke up my eyes were red so I had to stay home for a few days as my eyes are healing and it was for my lazy eyes so I had to get surgery on it

I'm surprised how many children prefer starting anesthesia via mask vs IV. When I was a kid, needles were unpleasant, but not terrible for me. I saw Monsters Inc. and the "scream extractor" terrified me to the point that I was scared of having a surgery, simply because I didn't want a mask with a big tube on my face. Fortunately, I was allowed to choose to start anesthesia via IV.
When I had my first open heart surgery in 1984 at 13(yes I’m old 😄) they gave me the choice. I chose to have no needles until I was under. I was petrified of needles when I was a kid(until I was probably 14 or 15). It was a definite phobia, not just being scared.
I had two, i operation, one in 1995 to change the valve I had pre to that year for the one I am currently using, and another in 2011 to remove a bone of meat I accidentally from not having a food proessor at home
As a kid, I would have loved having my mom or dad with me going into the surgery room. It would have helped so much with my anxiety. (Granted, as an adult I wouldn't mind having a loved one come with me either! ;))

Though children can be completely asleep with flavored masks but I understand you wish you had been prepared this well
