Full Power Short Takeoff - Empty Boeing 737-800

  • On a positioning flight (no passenger, only flight crew) with light windshear reported at 500ft from a traffic that departed ahead of us, we elected to take-off with full power (26,000 lbs of thrust on each engine).
    We usually use a reduced power setting on take-off to preserve the engines' life, reduce the noise and fuel burn, and improve the controllability should an engine failure occur during the take-off roll. We rarely perform full power take-offs but a few circumstances mandate the use of the full 26K setting from the engines.
    Take-off roll was around 700 meters (2300ft).

    Holy crap that went up fast. Took my first airplane ride last August. It was one of my worst fears. It was not bad at all. I actually kinda like it. It was the worst and best day of my life. After we landed all I wanted to do was hug the pilot and tell him good job. Airplanes just amaze me. HOW IN THE WORLD DO WE FLY. WE WERE NOT MENT TO FLY. amazing.

    Wow, wow, wow. I have hundreds of hours as a passenger. The only time I've ever thought the same thing, watching this video, is actually saying to myself "WTF" on a revenue flight after similar shockingly quick rotation on a 75 from ATL (derate clearly wasn't in the cards for them). That must have been a lot of fun. Thank you for sharing, Captain. Please share more.

    One of the best take offs i ever experienced as passenger, was from the airport of Heraklion in Crete. It's the best accelaration i ever felt as a passenger, and right when you take off you pass really low over the city. Our pilot did a sharp turn right just over the city's harbour. I wonder if it's safe.

    Vr or Rotate is defined as the speed at which the pilot begins to apply control inputs to make the aircraft nose to pitch up, after which it leaves the ground. The easiest way to memorize the rotate speed is the point where the nose leaves the ground and vortexes are created at the wing tips which rotate behind the aircraft. Moreover, the point where the main gear leaves the ground is the point where the aircraft has reached the Vlof - lift off speed.

  • @NIAPRA
    @NIAPRA 6 лет назад

    V1 is defined as the speed beyond which the take-off should no longer be aborted. Meaning that in case you experience any trouble with your plane before reaching V1 you would immediately abort your take-off and would apply all the necessary means to bring the aircraft to a halt. If pilots experience any serious aircraft malfunction after V1, otherwise they have to continue the take-off, a take-off board will lead to a runway overrun and could severely damage the plane.

    V2 is the speed at which the aircraft may safely be climbed with one engine inoperative. This speed is nicknamed a “take-off safety speed”; it is the speed an aircraft with one engine inoperative must be able to attain in order to leave the runway and get 35 feet off the ground at the end of the runway, maintaining a 200 ft/min climb thereafter. This is the lowest speed at which the aircraft complies with the handling criteria associated with a climb after a take-off, followed by the failure of an engine.

      Years ago I was in a 737 that had been stuck on the taxiway for over an hour during a terribly backed up day at Newark/EWR. The pilot started to spin up the engines as we were turning on to the runway and proceeded to hit full thrust as soon as we were straight on the runway, the takeoff roll was insanely short and once in the air the g-forces from the climb made it challenging (seriously!) to lean enough to look out the window... we were at several thousand feet and still climbing hard as we cleared the end of the runway. It was amazing!

Ive no reason to doubt you at all, I'm truly just curious if that was 100% all shes got power (I always feel like pilots have a few percent up their sleeve if needed for some reason). TommyT It was regular TOGA power, but for VERY short runways with heavy loads you can run the engines to a 27K bump, compared to the 26K toga in this video, but this is not used in normal operations.

      Awesome, thanks! Okay my question relates generally to the windshear accident of Eastern Flight 66 at JFK. The first link below is a synopsis of the incident particulars. My specific question however relates to Eastern Flight 902 which was ~3 a/c in front of Flight 66...and which was also 'caught up' in the windshear event but (just barely) pulled out of it/went around (it was an L-1011). Another article (link #2 below) describes Flight 902's situation in detail.
      My question is this: Flight 902 'TOGAd' & went around...and evidently there was 'severe engine damage' and the pilot came under scrutiny (described in article). Can you opine how (or why) there would be engine damage from 'TOGA power' go around (it mentions excessive heat, my question is why TOGA power (used now and then on a/c) would damage the engines - if that makes sense). My hunch is there are some details or nuances not mentioned &/or which I am ignorant of - in that 'maneuver' that day that lead to damage (excessive heat)...I'm wondering why that may have happened?

      Derated thrust take-off reduces the fuel burn, but reduced climb power increases the fuel burn (as you will reach the cruise later).
