    2008 Seemed to have the most pleasant midrange to me. I really dug the tone on that.

    2006 sounds the most badass to me. I have a brand new fully loaded SuperSport El-34 and I go back and forth between new/old all the time depending on what I'm playing. So much so that I wish it was foot switchable

      i had a 2006 which i regret selling, and a 2012 which i hated. The clean was way better on the 2012 but the midrange voicing sucked. The 2006 ruled. I havent played the 2018 or 2020 with the B+ stuff, but I did hear they changed transformers, and that is a mistake.

    I wonder if this is the same for the competition? also what circuit changes was made between 2006 and 2008 i wonder?

    • @totallyradguitars959
      @totallyradguitars959  10 месяцев назад

      I *think* the Competition should have the same changes since it is essentially the QR circuit lifted and just missing the channel switching stuff. I also would like to know but I don't have schematics of these, although I do have pictures of their internals on my website. Still kicking myself for not buying a 2005 QR that came up for sale (no gears), but I also have a 2003 Splawn modded 1987X which actually sounds closer to the 2008ish ones. Probably just trying a lot of different stuff, but they all have a signature "feel" under the fingers.

    Did the 2008 QR have a FX loop level control on the back? I had one that had the same headshell type, color. Sold it on reverb. Couldn't use the fx loop with my delay pedals because I had to crank it past 3 to use it. Great amp but not very forgiving if you have sloppy technique 🤣

    • @totallyradguitars959
      @totallyradguitars959  2 года назад +1

      Hey, no the 2008 doesn't have it. My 2006 does but only because it has been back to Splawn for repair and they added it.
      Instead I have a pedal I got on amazon for $20 which is basically just a pot in a box that I put in the FX loop (after other effects if I use them) and I leave that at about half and it makes it much more manageable for volumes... without that box in the loop the amp goes from dead quiet/tinny sounding to insanely loud and I can't find a happy medium.

    • @muleblues71
      @muleblues71 2 года назад

      @@totallyradguitars959 did you buy the 2008 brand new or used? Like I mentioned, I sold one on reverb a few yrs back and wondered if it was making the rounds. I asked Scott splawn if it could be modified with the B+ mod, he said no because of the chassis size. The b+ gives it a bit more squish.

      @@muleblues71 I picked it up used from a local place called “Jimmy’s Vintage Music.” Great shop - I bought that amp from them in 2016 so I’ve had it for a while. At first I felt it was too dark but I really like having the option - newer splawns have an old/new switch and the B+ as you mentioned but they don’t replicate the sound of this one.
      I also have a 1987x Marshall modded by Splawn. Wish I’d included it in this video because it still has the signature Splawn kind of mids but otherwise very different sound from these QR’s

    Hey! I have an opportunity to buy a 2006 QR...I have a question though...on the clean settings you had the OD Channel Gain at 9 o'clock...does that mean that the overdrive channel bleed on the clean one? Meaning that it's impossible to have a completely clean channel if your OD gain of the OD channel is high?

    • @totallyradguitars959
      @totallyradguitars959  3 года назад +1

      Hey dude, yeah that's exactly right. If I raise the OD gain up to say, 3 o'clock, the clean channel will get dirtier. It doesn't sound like a bleed (i.e. two channels kinda playing at once) instead it sounds like the clean channel has a second mini-gain control on it or something. My guess is turning up the gain control on the OD channel adds more gain to a tube that's in the same path as the clean channel or something. So it is impossible to have a super high gain sound and a super clean sound on the 06 circuit amps, that's why they put an extra tube on 08-present ones, it's a tube dedicated to the clean channel.

    • @michaelmolick292
      @michaelmolick292 Год назад +1

      I have an 06 QR, dirty it cant be beat, but the clean channel sounds like plugging a guitar straight into a channel on a live soundboard 😢

    Have a 2007 with clean channel.. seems to like the "treble on zero" setting.. play mostly classic rock with it.. but fun to get on 3rd hear OD2.. can anyone give details of the difference between OD1 and OD2?..my gut tells me OD1 is more.marshall tight and OD2 has more sag..

    • @totallyradguitars959
      @totallyradguitars959  3 года назад +2

      Sure - skimming the schematic I have for these, OD1 bleeds off some signal to ground in between V1A and V1B. The amp "naturally" runs in OD2 mode and there's no other shaping going on between the two modes. It's basically just a footswitchable way to drop the gain down a notch or two without touching the knobs.
      Edit: For context, the gain control is also located between V1A and V1B

      If it were the head I would've kept it, but for a 1x12 it was massive!
      The '06 is my favorite at the moment, I feel the mids are the tiniest bit more complex than the SR. The '08 is polarizing, I think people who played '07-'11 Splawns and wrote them off as too dark/honky/middy really need to try out the newer (post 2012) stuff.
