JCM800 Split Channel 2205/2210 Review
My favorite Marshall amp, the JCM800 Series split channel amps. Go through 3 slightly different versions of the amp and talk about how they are very different despite sharing the same controls and visual appearance. I'll be doing a separate companion video with more comparison clips between these three amps.

My second serious tube amp was an EVH 5150 50w, back before the stealth and EL34 versions existed. I really loved that amp, especially for the red channel, but I rarely used the green/blue and the shared EQ ultimately forced me to sell it before I really started keeping the gear I collect. I was hoping to find another 50w but when this 100w popped up for a good price, I grabbed it and I'm thril...

Marshall JCM900 Dual Reverb - In Depth Review
Просмотров 31 тыс.2 года назад
An overview and play test of one of Marshall's most infamous amp designs, the model 4100/4500 Dual Reverb. While this amp has clipping diodes, it also has a lot of opamps that provide gain in the circuit - unlike any other high end Marshall. This gives it a characteristic "love it or hate it" tone - but either way, it excels at certain genres. Help me out by shopping for one at this link (Guita...

Great vid of these awesome budget guitars... I am looking at buying a local Focus 2000 repainted but has all the signs of an older 83 model as it has the NFT Floyd.. of which Brad Gillis from Nightranger said they NEVER go out of tune.. he loves them..(not routed for floating as Eddie liked his).. but since it was repainted i need to chack to make sure its not a Striker plywood body.. this one also has the Masumoku body style.. non-squished strat and fatter horns.. I assume this is a real Focus.. how are the necks?.. are these older ones thin? maybe not WIZARD thin but thin will a U shape or C?.. curious..
great tone of the ceriatone, how you compare the clean sound of Kingkong vs AH Deluxe ?
Prefer maple fretboards
Love Kramers, but not those. Hate Strat pickguard guitars. Don't like the pointy headstock or the tapered logo. The Baretta with the tilted pickup is my go to. Basically, a Baretta Vintage. Prefer the 80s era version.
I'm a little too old and bitter for that noise. Kurt Gobang and his buddies came along and destroyed music and ushered in the garage we have today. After a moment of clarity, and the realization of what he'd done to the greatest music and guitar playing in our history, he grabbed his keys and raced to the nearest sporting goods store. The rest is tragic history. I get it. If I caused the demise of Dokken, Ratt, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Maiden, and Head banger's Ball, I may have done the same thing. The damage was done. Now, we have drop C. I just cannot forgive that. 😩😭😠 😁
The problem is the logo. It's like a BC Rich with the script logo instead of the R logo. The R logo BC Rich guitars are the high end models. The Japanese made guitars are outstanding. I started playing hair guitar in 1985. Lynch, Randy, Eddie, Demartini, etc. Guitars from the 80s were outstanding. All the iconic shapes came from the 80s. The 80s was the Golden Age of Gunslingers. Nothing current, or since the schitt band Nirvana came out with their garbage has compared to the 80s playing. The drop C is horrific.🙆😵😩😬💩
I have a jcm 900 and I am always approached after gigs, by guitar players, who ask me if it is modded. It isn't. I just put treble, mid, and bass at 12 o'clock and crank the preamp all the way to on channel A for rhythm and it sounds great. I use channel B for solos with just a little more gain. It's a beautiful sounding amp.
Hello again. I forgot to tell you. I also had a kramer sustainer which was a pacer with a flip flop blue color with a sustainer made in Indianapolis.. ❤ I have seem some great kramers and some really bad ones. I had two berettas that were American Klines and they were not that great really. 😂.. The stagemaster was great. It had the best neck and pickups by duncan and a great German floyd that never went out of tune. ❤ Didn't many have all maple bodies? Love your videos sir. ❤
Hello again. I have one or my buddy does actually and jt used to be mine. I habe one from 1990. It was purchased by a guy I know. It has the Schaller bridge and tooth paste logo though. Crackle finish. I updated the trem to accept a floyd bar and adjust easy. It doesnt have the original pickups though. I wish I had the wiring diagram for it so I can wire it the same with the spliting, etc. I would just use dimarzios though. ❤❤ Great video. ❤❤... Thanks man. They are killer ❤❤
I agree. I think they should have had at least the full shred in the bridge. I'm not concerned about the nut width, but I can see how a collector cares. I still like it. Does it have jumbo frets and how does that 1000 trem feel compared to the old German models? I also like the looks of the skid row Kline graphic one with the reverse headstock. ❤ I love that it has the short scale. I hear the pro axe with its Floyd had a strange radius? Like 10 inches vs 12 for a German Floyd from the factory??? Great video and great points. ❤
I just found you and thought I'd see what you say about these new ones. ❤
Excellent descriptions & explanations of the various Orange amps.
Hey I just found an st-3 USA model like yours for $100!!!! It’s a bit beat up. Do you know the radius of the fretboard? Based off the catalog?
USA was the only one to use 6550 tubes in Marshalls, and my two 100 watt 2210 amps were essentially the same but one was a combo ( which probably had a different number), but sounded, even when used into the same cabs, a bit different. EL34's always sounded better (to me) than 6550 tubes, but if you wanted a bright clean hard signal you may have liked the 6550's. Often maligned as " too dark" sounding ,the 2210 was preferred by me in comparison with the more trebley JCM900 series, which sounded, I feel, more spitty in the high end, whereas the 2210 moderated the higher gain settings by softening the extremes. I wish I'd never sold both of them, because they are now hard to find.🎸
Great video and an awesome guitar! I have one in orange. Any chance you have a photo of the wiring? I pulled out the original electronics in mine many years ago to wire it like a traditional strat. I've got all the original parts but not sure how to wire it back up to stock. Thanks!
Hey, sorry man I sold it a while back. I do vaguely remember seeing some JE-1500 wiring guides though, maybe on the jcf forum. That should at least get you in the right direction - cheers!

does anyone know if the body is the same size as the original dinky/3DR/predator?
Hi, My jk's truss rod won't turn😕 Would you suggest me something to use with it? Would WD-40 work to get it to turn? I don't want to try to force it and end up messing up the tread. Will buying a hosco truss todo Philips wrench help?
tu parles trop!!! blah blah blah!!!!
Master is WAY too low brother. Try at least 4 and then cut to the desired volume in the loop.
Hey, that doesn't make any sense. The Master is located immediately before the SS loop - whether you set the master lower, or put a volume box in the loop and set that lower, it is the same result as far as the signal is concerned, just going through two op amps (effects send and recovery). FYI I've had the volume everywhere from 1 to full 10 and there is not that big of a difference in tone when close miced like this - and I'd rather be able to hear myself when presenting than get my ears ripped apart by a 120db+ amp three feet away from my face. It's a demo of general tones of the amp, not "this will be the most optimal possible feel, tone, and loudness for every viewer." Cheers
@totallyradguitars959 That is interesting because mine definitely was thin with the master set low. If I turned up my master and then lowered the volume with a volume pedal in the loop it reduced the high end and sounded more pleasing. It was terrible with the volume set low. If what you are telling me is correct then it's like I had a bright cap on my master volume and you don't. I've sold my 2203 and now have an sc20: I've just copied what worked on my 2203. I'm gonna try this on the SC20 to see what happens and also have a look at the 2203 schematic to see what's up. Edit 15 minutes later.. Found the schematic and the 2203 is not showing a bright cap on the master so I'd say yours is behaving how it should and mine was not. It bought it used so Im wondering if someone had clipped off the bright cap, and later had it "restored" but they screwed up and put it on the master by accident?? Other than this I don't see why mine behaved the way it did. Just waiting for the brats to wake up so I can test my sc20 but I'm leaning to it behaving like yours and not my 2203 after seeing the schematic.
@@JD-kj4mj I was going to say - no bright cap on the master of this amp. It is true however, that a scratchy pot can make it really difficult to find that sweet spot at low volumes - I've played quite a few old/beaten amps and it's true that the volume set extremely low can be crackly/thin but that's more due to corrosion/quality of the pot itself than the amp overall. This particular 2203x is in pristine shape so I don't have that issue, but I will say that I use the exact trick you mention (master up higher, vol box in effects loop) on several other amps, but it's not a tone thing usually, more about making it easier to dial in or balance vol across channels when I take it to a jam or whatever. The biggest difference between your SC20 and a full size 2203/2204 is going to be the power amp, since the Studio series Marshalls are all cathode biased (erroneously called "Class A" in guitar circles). That shouldn't matter for this since we'd be lowering the volume before it hits the power stage. Same input volume to the poweramp, regardless of if it is achieved via the Master alone or two pots in series (master + loop), should be the same sound. In theory of course and all that. Rock on
Dude its not a 5 .... model 5 was a 24 fret neck thru Hss active mid boost monster
Yes... that's why this video is called "Charvel Model 3A" emphasis on "3." You are also incorrect, the Model 5 was HH, not HSS, you are thinking of the Model 6. There is also the Model 5A (H) and 5FX (HS). I have a separate video on the 5 and 5A. Cheers
What's the Guitar name?
Hey, it's an '82 Kramer Pacer Custom (model name, not custom shop or anything fancy)
Gets "woofy" with the FX loop jumpered. You have the bass cranked though, still a great amp I love mine. Thanks for the under the hood tour that was great info.
Hy! I'm trying to understand Which model is my BC RICH. I'm pretty sure is a ST III Neck Through body. Can you confirm it if you can? It has no serial number to check

i would like a JCM800 in the smallest lightest Marshall... Which one would you recommend? thanks... great channel.
If you're looking for JCM800 2203/2204 sounds, the Marshall SC20H or Ceriatone 2202 are both very good options in the smaller/lunchbox amp space. If you're looking for JCM800 2205/2210 tones like in this video, there is no modern equivalent sadly, you would have to get an actual 2205/2210. Cheers

Hey, it’s this video: ruclips.net/video/0XxPKrt5i-M/видео.htmlsi=w1nKXU_v4Mkdf7fm
@@totallyradguitars959 You the best man 😁
You got 2 sheilded wires from V-1 to the input thats not stock on a standard 2203. Your amp is modded IMO.
The grey wires? One is pin 7 to input, the other is pin 2 to preamp gain - that's stock on the 2203X schematic and matches other internal pictures I've seen. Or am I missing something? Thanks
Bro hope to see you back sometime soon! hope all is well, peace!
Party on Garth...
The STs came with a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and OEM DiMarzio single coils. The Gunsinger came with a singe Super Distortion. Most BC Riches in the 70s and 80s came with a Super Distortion in the bridge and either a DiMarzio PAF neck or Super D or Super 2 neck. Some Riches came with the DiMarzio X2N in the bridge. Also, some old BCRs came with the Moser built-in preamp with a chicken head control knob. I always felt they were unnecessary as the DiMarzio Super Distortion or X2N have more than enough output.
Thats more like mid 84. 1983 had the non locking tuner floyds- and gross whats growing on your frets? Nasty. Would love to see the control plate... early ones had the big cavity and later tbe small cavity. The smaller upper arm off the cutaway also pins it later.
I have had a JCM 900 since the 1990's. I love the tone. I put it through different cabs and use different pedals to change the sound if I want to change the sound. I want a Jubilee amp but my wife ie being unreasonable. I have never jumped the effects loop. I am going to be trying that out.
Master Volume at 1 1/2... What a shame...
So tired of these kind of comments. With a close mic sm57 it sounds 99% the same at 1.5 as it does at 5 as it does at 10. I have to sit in the room with it to talk about it, and I’m not going to blow my ears out. If you want a regurgitated load box cab IR review pick one of the hundred other channels doing that. Come here to learn about the circuit design and history.
Great video and explanation of the circuit! Nice 90's ass pop punk tunes to show it off to haha.
I know I'm late to the party, but thank you so much for making a video that doesn't just ignore the R2 channel.
I’m impressed! Such a great guitar You’d pick this instead a Focus 3000? Great video! Thanks
It's all personal preference, but there's a reason I sold almost all of my Charvels including this one, but kept my Kramer Pacer Deluxes. I wouldn't say no to either guitar though! And I do miss this one the most of my Charvels.
@ Thank you!!
Silly me for thinking I would hear the guitar
The chapters on the video are clearly named and include the playthrough at 18:15. In the time it took to write this comment you could've clicked a single time and heard the guitar. It sounds like every guitar ever made with a DD in the bridge position.
Great video man! I have a probably silly question, I cant find the Lead Boost in the schematics, what is technically that switch doing?
Hey! It's on the bottom side of the V2B tube and labeled "L. B." It's actually a two-part switch, it enables a parallel signal bypass cap on the cathode of the tube. It both increases the gain level of that stage and changes the EQ of the gain by pushing the mids forward. The V2B tube (and LB switch) are only active in Lead II mode of the amp - there's an older/inaccurate schematic floating around the web that is missing the LB switch, so find the one I used in this video (it's on el34world and other sites). Cheers
@totallyradguitars959 thanks a lot!!
Fantastic video. You do very thorough reviews and this one was no exception. Great job!
how the hell do you afford all these amps?
I have no savings, no car, and a very understanding wife 😇
What’s the noise around 25 minutes?
If it's the rapid ticking noise you mean, it's my old recording setup in the room kind of sucked, so I'd get this feedback from my phone being in my pocket too close to the guitar (my lapel mic is being recorded into my phone)
@ totally makes sense. Great job dude.
Way late to the party but this is a great video. I’m in the market for one now. I had a Mark V years ago but I really didn’t like it or understand how to get certain sounds. I’m not a tweaker 😂. I’ve heard others make them both sound great. Just not me 😂.
Best amp in the world!!!
He finally stops flapping his jaws and plays at 12:12 And it sounds terrible

Haha well as long as you’re enjoying yourself, rock on 🤘
Do they come in neon green?
Why do you say these have Ibanez trems when they were built with the SFT-70A Young Chang licensed Floyds?
I say that because I have two right here in my hands complete with factory documentation and catalogs that show the Ibanez Edge was the factory trem for USA’s made in 1987. Later USA models came with a Gotoh made GE1988T stamped with BC Rich. The SFT-70A was only used on cheaper import models, made in Korea. It can be confusing because the model name “ST-III” was used on USA, Japan, and Korean made guitars. I am strictly talking about USA in this video. Cheers
