    I watched 10 videos that "explain " a thumper but they didn't explain. You just explained what a thumper is. Thank you.

    • @smyers820gm
      @smyers820gm 3 месяца назад +3

      That thumper isn’t big enough for that pots capacity. Also you should look up George Duncan barely and hops brewing. He is a fantastic teacher. Explains everything in a simple easy to understand way. He will also explain why this thumper is too small 🤷‍♂️

      Actually I still don't understand the thumper section as many videos as I have seen. Because why & how does the steam get to rise through the second pipe? What heats up the thumper box?
      Clearly I'm missing something.

    • @smyers820gm
      @smyers820gm Месяц назад +2

      @ the alcohol steam goes out of the boiling pot. Through the copper pipe over and down into the thumper. It travels to the bottom of the thumper and pressure builds till it forces its way out of the pipe and through whatever liquid or ingredients you have put in the thumper. As it does this it heats up that liquid or ingredients. Because the steam is extremely hot. Also as it does that last part it begins to make a “thumping” sound. That’s how the thump keg or thumper got its name. That steam will rise as it passes through whatever you put in the thumper and then exit the other copper pipe and follow the path to the “worm” or condenser, where it will be cooled by cold water and at that point the steam will turn back into a liquid (alcohol). Now as the super heated steam goes through and heats up what’s in the thumper the stuff in the thumper will boil and add to the alcohol steam giving it a stronger alcohol content than if they didn’t use the thumper. Another name for the thumper is a “doubler”. Another thing that can happen is if you add fruits and/or botanicals to the thumper it can add flavor to the alcohol you are making.

    The rule of thumb is to fill a boil kettle 80% so 13.2 gal times .8 = 10.56 gals.

      You can run it as is but usually me personally I don't like to. There is so much head space it causes a lot of reflux to happen in your pot. Your proof will be higher but a lot of your flavor will be stripped. You can add a gallon or 2 of water to help it won't hurt. You will still get your alcohol out of your mash your just increasing your mash volume...Shine On

      It's american white oak lump charcoal it doesn't add any flavor or color it helps remove any harsh compounds that are left in the shine I only do it when I run grain mashes if I'm doing a brandy I don't use it because it can also take flavor and with a brandy the flavor is already very subtle

      Fill your pot about 85% full always leave atleast 15% for head space run it till you pull all the available alcohol off then Stop it you can do stripping runs also if you like doing that better that allows you to do a multiple distilled product produces a cleaner product

      If your talking about the football column vevor still it is also a very good starting still the they both work great and are fairly straightforward to operate the main differences between the two is the column still is more modular meaning you can modify it easier because it is a tri clamp system and the other still is not so if you plan to upgrade your still I would go for the Vevor column still if not I would pick this one because it comes with everything you will need

    I’ve got a question so..I got myself a set up identical to this the only thing different is the brand. I didn’t get vevor I ended up getting a “vivo home” 8 gal 3 pot set up pretty much identical to what you got there. That being said how could I check for leaks in the lines before I did a run? I’m weary of running it over a burner like you did without knowing if the lines leak vapors or not. How could I check this?

    • @TheShineshack
      @TheShineshack  5 месяцев назад

      Just fill the pot full of water like you would a mash and run your steel like you would. If you're doing alcohol run and just look and see if you see steam coming out of anywhere when you do an actual run, you won't see stain alcohol vapors clear. You have to use a mirror to check for leaks if you're doing an alcohol run but run it good and hard with just water in it and if you have a leak you'll see the steam or you'll see water and condensation on your lines

      I usually fill it roughly 1/3 the way full and yes you can put liquids and grains and fruits in the thumper but I recommend atleast breaking them up some because there has been incidents where blueberries have clogged the inlet in the thumper and then you have a dangerous situation on your hands so just make sure that can't happen and your good to go I use my thumper alot to put fruit and grains from the mash in it really adds to the flavor profile

    First off love the videos!!! but i have a question as a first time moonshiner. My first run i over heated my mash and me shine came out fast and the i struggled to cool my still back down and ended up messing up my whole first run! any tips on how to heat your still from the beginning and maintain the temperature you want? i have a similar set up to this one i just have the 8 gallon and im using a turkey burner to heat my still, and there is not alot of info on how slowly to heat your still and maintain the temps you want. LOVE THE CHANNEL AND KEEP MAKING THESE AWSOME VIDEOS!

    • @TheShineshack
      @TheShineshack  9 месяцев назад +3

      Thank you for supporting the channel I really appreciate that .....first off make sure not to over fill your pot I wouldn't put no more than 6 gallons of mash in there head space is important I go by touch and feel of the still to know where I'm at by touching the pot and line arm but if it's your first run I would do when you fire up keep your fire really low just make sure your temperature is rising id say 5-10 degrees every 5 minutes is good to start once you see your temperature get around 155-160 you know your very close I would back the fire down even more you will start running around 172°-185° F it varies from still to still once it starts to run adjust your heat to keep your likker steam The thickness of a matchstick that's what you want. That's optimal as long as you hold it there, you'll be good for your whole run. As you get deep into your run and the ABV and the pot starts to drop. You will have to bump your heat up a little here and there because the temp that the alcohol requires to evaporate will go up as the ABV drops because there's more water in your pot at that point then alcohol And that should do you. If you ever heat up too fast The best thing to do is cut your fire way down as low as it'll go and allow your still to cool down and then turn your fire back up to get it where you want. I hope this helps. It's definitely a learning experience, but I promise with each run you'll gain more knowledge. That's the only way to learn is by doing

    How hot do you run the cleaning process and actual stilling process and how long does it take to make a run

    • @TheShineshack
      @TheShineshack  3 месяца назад

      When it comes to cleaning I run it as hot as I can get. You want a good hard boil and hard steam to really get it good and clean with 50/50 water and vinegar or water and citric acid And when it comes to running it's all really about preference there's a bunch of factors that go into what exact temperature each still runs at different stills run at different temperatures Alcohol starts to evaporate at 174° but for this still My pot's always between about 180°and 190° And you can tweak it from there up a little or down a little to get your output stream to where you want it And as for how long it takes to do a run, it really all depends. You'll find what works for you. Some people like to run really really slow. Some people like to run fast. You definitely don't want to run too fast though it'll hurt your product too slow. Will hurt your product as well. For the 13 gallon vevor pot, I say about 2 to 4 hours To do a run that's from the time you get first drips to the time you get into your Late tails now my bigger still. My 25 gallon takes me about 6 to 8 hours I like to run kind of slow but not too slow As long as you keep your output stream the thickness of a matchstick, that's where you want to be. You don't want it pouring hope this helps thanks for watching

      It's best if possible not to recirculate water, just let it run out and hit the ground. I have found that the best way You can also look into purchasing a water chiller. They can be quite expensive or just create a big 30 to 40 gallon drum and keep it full of Frozen gallon jugs that you refreeze each time. All those methods work, but I prefer just to take good cold tap water and spring water out of a hose pipe. Let it run through your worm and hit the ground works awesome

      Awesome well you got the mashing in part pretty much down pat then...But not really the thumper helps clean your spirit up some also helps raise your proof a little but you can also use it to infuse flavor into your spirit especially on a brandy but even on grains you can infuse sweet corn or even mash Etc but you can fill it about 1/3 - 1/2 full with high proof likker,tails,mash,water, flavoring etc they are very versatile you can also run a still without a thumper and leave it empty to use it as a slobber box which acts as a catch container in case your still pukes

    I bought the 5 gallon setup. It didn't have the pipe for the inside of the thumper. Assuming I can make one, does it go on the pot side or condenser side of the thumper? Also, between the adjuster on the pump not working, the drain valve being too small, and the condenser pot being so small if I set the flow rate low enough to not overflow it heated up really fast. I had to make a longer worm and put it in a much bigger pot, with a larger drain valve because the water is pumped in with pressure but drains by gravity.
    Other than that, it's alright.

      For the vevor still I just put the hose pipe from my spring box into a 5 gallon bucket then pumped it to the worm on my Big copper pot I just hooked the hose pipe for my spring straight to the worm. I don't recirculate. I found it better just to let the water hit the ground. I generally only waste about 50 gallons during a run I got tired of buying so much ice 😂 But when I did recirculate and use ice I had a 55 gallon drum. I cut in half so about 35 gallons and I'd fill it up every run and add ice

    Have you seen some of the videos on assembly of this thing? They’re terrible. It’s like they’ll post anything even if they don’t know what they’re doing. Good man yourself for breaking it down properly. Great video. Thank you. ✌️🧪🥷🏿

      Yeah I know right I always try to be as simple as possible but also pack as much information as possible In my videos because I know how it is if I'm looking for something on RUclips sometimes I have to watch 15 different videos on the same topic and peace bits and pieces together to understand it I know how much of a pain in the ass it is...I appreciate it thank you

      I wouldn't put but 2-2.5 gallons in it to leave enough head space so it doesn't puke

      It all depends there are a lot of different variables ABV of mash and mash ingredients is it fruit or grain how you make your cuts but a rough estimate between 1/2 - 1 gallon of good product after makeing proper cuts
