It’s insane how narrow most shoes are. Wide feet are literally more natural and healthier feet. Feet are supposed to be wide…
I’m with you. These show are so….narrow. I tried in store the 1080 v13,too narrow. I only found the 880 wide to provide decent comfort.
🥲
The stupid shoe conglomerates think that making shoes look "sexy" are the way to go. I've banged up my feet my whole life as a teenager while I was ignorant of having the right shoes that fit for me as I have wide feet. It's only now as an adult that I know which shoes fit me best thanks to an advise by a good friend to look for shoe reviews prior to purchasing.
There's also something to consider: wide vs. high volume feet. Most 2E running shoes simply add fabric to the upper to wrap around the wider foot better, but this strategy works best if you have high volume feet and not a wide-spread forefoot because the platform is still the same platform as the D width. Only when the shoe goes up to 4E does the platform change width, but these will only fit super wide and/or super high volume feet.
If you have a regular volume midfoot and heel (and therefore not a high volume foot), but simply have a wide forefoot, using Altra or Topo seems to be the only way to go except in a few other models of shoes from other manufacturers. The taper on most toe boxes just makes most running shoes uncomfortable for people with wide feet. Pinkie toes get smashed and eventually burst out the sidewall, or the medial edge of the big toe gets blisters as it constantly rubs against the edge of the insole and the medial sidewall.
I blame wearing Birkenstocks throughout my adolescence for my wide forefoot with ample toe splay. Unfortunately, I can't wear most shoes from most running shoe manufacturers. Right now I run with Topo Pursuit for the trails and there's enough room for my foot (I wear sz 10 in Topo where I have to wear at least 10.5 in other manufacturers). On roads, I run in NB Rebel v2 but have to run in size 11D. I tried wide version of the Rebel v1 but there was too much fabric and my foot sloshed side to side on corners. I tried wide version of Saucony Peregrine, but the toe box platform was still too narrow and the fabric on the upper was just loose so I had to crank the laces hard. Strangely, old v30 of Pegasus used to have a wider toe box, as well as the Nike Elite tempo shoe (it had a semi-curved last that accommodated wide forefoot much better than most Nike shoes). I tried Altra shoes in the past, but while the width in the forefoot was good, the quality control wasn't and the sizing also varies widely from model to model.
One (less popular) path you could try if you have a wide foot but regular foot volume: run in Vibram five fingers or Shamma sandals, which have the ability to accommodate the wider forefoot, but have very little cushioning underfoot. I run in both periodically and this solves the width problem (I still need to alternate with shoes with more cushioning because I'm getting older).
Just bought some V2's in the outlet for £67. Taking them out this week to see how I get on. Wanted to try the wide but they didn't have any instore so I sized up after trying half a size and a full size up. Put them side to side with some half up Peg 35 that i've loved (after a tough time with a tts 37) and there's not much in it. Just fancied a shoe for the faster runs with less weight. Never full sized up in anything before so i'm still trying to get my head around it. Annoying juxtaposition you are in when you sit somewhere between normal and wide.
Reassuring to read someone else full size up.
I'm having the same issue.
Youre really like a doctor of running shoe widths 😂😂😂, but i also have problem with wide foot, wide spread forefoot with less volume, also many running shoes have even too narrow heel space for me, they say get one size bigger which doesnt helps, im waiting to try new pegasus 40 extra wide
The current Pegasus Trail 4 has a good toe box for nike
I bought kayano 30 both in wide and normal fit. Struggle to determine which one to keep. The normal are a bit snug im the toebox but good in midfoot and heel. The wide version is roomy in the toebox but not as snug in the midfoot and heel.....
The Brooks also comes in the GTS version for those wanting a stability shoe, GTS also available in wider widths.
Great video Chris. I liked the 1080v10 so tempted to try these
Thanks - really helpful, I bought the 1080v11 in 4E and never had something that fit so well. Ended up sizing down to a 9.5 (half a size down) as I was so used to buying bigger to avoid discomfort... bought the puma deviate size 10 got a great deal, but ive been disappointed, they just don't fit the strange slabs of square meat at the end of my legs 😅 back to the 1080s in 4E I think
Cheers Fordy, I've been waiting for this
Welcome
@@FordyRuns I have both NB and the Brooks but going for the 1080's. 26.2 is a long way to be uncomfortable
I knew before you even mentioned the second shoe what it was. 1080,s all the way. I wear a UK 9 and a half and go with the 2E because I also wear orthotics. I can get the 1080's in version 11 for €113 here in an NB outlet store. Think their great value. So if anyone else has problems with finding a shoe suitable for orthotics they should give them a try. Great video as always Chris and I hope your feeling a bit better. Stay safe.
Just got the 1080v12 in the mail today they definitely run a half size long, sending them back and already ordered the 2E version.
As a wide footed runner, I bought the Altra Paradigm 5. Great wide fitting and super comfy with 0 drop if your in to that.
Great feedback
I just posted above ab out the 1080v12 did not work for me. The paradigm was great in comparison.
Brooks have been great for me for width. I'm still wanting to venture into the world of Altra at some point but haven't yet dipped my toe in (sorry had to be done)
Hey, could you do a video on which brands make their shoes wider in the sole, and which just make the shoe upper more volumous? The latter doesnt really help alot...
New Balance 880v12 for workhorse daily trainer, 1080v12 for daily trainer/recovery, Fresh Foam More v3 for recovery/max stack. These all come in 4E but these particular models are more like 5E. I buy 6E shoes when they are available but can sometimes fit 4E shoes and these three shoes and versions fit. I can't get into most 4E shoes or they are tight. I also have high arches which require good midfoot volume. I plan to stock up on these three models because I've read that the 880v13 is narrower than the v12 and they might do that with the other shoes too. The New Balance 990v5 is available in 6E and it's a vintage running shoe so it doesn't have the kind of tech that you expect in modern shoes. It's marketed more as a lifestyle shoe but we have used it for running in the past.
I have wide feet, often need 2E, but in the 1080V12 I go NORMAL (D) width. I also went down half a size.. The only shoes ever went down 1/2 a size. Just perfect. Before I had the previous model 1080V10 but in that one I needed 2E. There are shoes with magic feel. 1080V12 just has something different. It not like it's excellent in any one attribute. It's just very good in everything and that's a feeling of trusting the shoe is very confidence inspiring.
Some manufacturers (HOKA) in the Wide model keep the same midsole and insole and just add extra materials to the upper for more volumes feet. I have wide feet but low volume so 1080V12 is perfect but Hoka wide is a joke. I got the Mach 5 (normal) width which I expected to send back the next day but going up a size (US crazy sizes) made me get 43⅓, they are a bit long but width is fine.
love this thanks
I have a wide foot. I'm a forefoot striker and my forefoot needs a lot of splay when running. The 1080v12 did not work for me, it not only irritated my arch it also pushed me onto my little toe and made my little toe sore in one 10k run. The midfoot is too narrow, the SC trainer was/is better for me. Also the altra paradigm worked well for me.
My 1080v12s do as well, even the extra wides (4E) aren’t very wide in the arch and my innermost arch lands on this annoying rubber wall along the perimeter of the sole. I managed to flatten it and break it in after about 100km but it’s still pretty disappointing lol.
If you’re looking for a decent racer you should try the saucony endorphins speed 3s wides about a half size up. Only shoe with a carbon plate for wide footers but they’re expensive.
Currently rockin some heavy ass extra wide sport chek 100$ dad runners.
Does the paradigm come in extra wide? Or is the d width just nice? My local store doesn’t carry altra so I can’t try them
Hey, how is the sc trainer doing now
Marathon training and picked up the 1080v12 2E after watching your review. Love it for long runs. Plenty of room, really comfortable and the miles just pass by with ease.
Also using Ride 15 2E for tempo/intervals, Ghost 14 2E and Wave Rider 25 2E as daily trainers and Glycerin 19 2E for recovery runs. Been a bit of trial and error but now have a rotation that works.
I'm particularly wide through the middle of my foot, which one of those do you like the most for middle of the foot width?
@@ryanmiskin8925 1080v12
@@darrenmclaughlin4113 I was looking at both the 880v12 and 1080v12, I've seen a lot of people happy with the 1080. I think I'm going to find a NB store tomorrow after work and try some on, and hopefully they have some wides available...thanks for the quick response.
@@ryanmiskin8925 I also recently picked up the 880v11 2E and would say the 1080 is slightly wider. Use a full length orthotic and no problems with it in both shoes.
Looking forward to your review of the new saucony triumph 20. Just gone through 50 miles in mine and they are fantastic and will give the 1080 a run for their money and be an interesting head to head video one day? 👏👍
I am liking them
I have 3e width feet, always struggled to find any kind of shoes! I started in Brook dyad, but only come in black and feel clumpy. I've been in brooks ghost 14s for a year, 1marathon and 4 half marathons later, and my feet are doing OK.
I have to say I was in New Balance fresh foam prior to gait analysis, and they caused me a world of pain!!
Agree 100%. Just the outsoles dont last long. Inuse them for walking mostly. 3.5 milles 7 days a week, probably one day Ill do less.
But very confortable shoes. Excellent choice
I’m a woman with wide feet so I just buy mens regular which is the same as a wide women’s. I have the mens glycerine gts mens 20 which you chose on this vid !
Have 12.5cm wide feet and ordered the NB 1080v13 4E and still wasn't wide enough for me, unfortunately. Went for Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23 4E and its soo much wider, very happy. If that helps anyone. 👍
What do you think about the hoka bondi 8 ? Or mach 5 ?
Which of these would be better for plantar fasciitis heel pain? I also have wide feet
The paradigm from altra was great,
So are they wide in the toe box, midfoot, or heel? All of the above? I have a wide toe box but narrow heel, so wide sizes tend to fit me worse than standard sizes.
Chris, for comfort and distance would you go for these or Glideride 3?
Hope you are feeling better?
Love both tbh
Thanks for the review, question, why did you buy another pair of the NB? Have you used them up?
I just love them and these are shredded up
@@FordyRuns thanks very much, follow up, how many miles did you get? Roughly.
in my experience, new balance shoes like the more v4 are more wide at the toes, while saucony's tempus is more voluminous at the instep
Looking forward to taking those out tomorrow
@@FordyRuns ive got three runs in them and i was really surprised how versatile it is (since my fast is other ones easy, it does it all for me). Plus its so good if the legs are tired. The white colourway is so nice i might have to take them out for holydays too😅
Ive been trying those 1080s at the store but didnt catch that the shoe covered my wide (arch) feet. Instead my ub 2021 still covered it with its felxible upperknit
Fordy- i have wider feet and high arches. I have a pair of NB 1080v12 and really struggling with Plantar Fascitis. To wear this shoe is ridiculously comfortable and accommodates my wide feet really well but keep getting this awful foot pain. Have just had to defer London as a result. Could the softness of these shoes be causing the issue? Tempted to try something firmer again…. And is so which one?
Maybe try the glycerin?
its annoying when some shoes come in wide 2e but are basically the same in midfoot width
Does anyone know some like XC flats that can be worn by wide feet?
Is it good for flat feet and marathon
Is it wide heels or wide toe box? Would love to see them on feet
Are they wide in the heel area also? I have wide forefoot but normal heel width. Kayano 30 wide feels wide in the heel
Agree
Something changed with the Brook I ordered a pair recently and they weren’t as comfortable as my previous pair
Nimbus-24 are pretty wide and light. I would recommend them as an option to those two too.
Good shout
I have the Nimbus 24. Same weight as the 1080V12. Both in the same width. I personally feel that the 1080V12 in NORMAL width are wider in the toe box then the Nimbus 24. The Nimbus 24 have a shallow toebox. When I want stability in tired legs I take the Nimbus 24. When I am tired and just want to jog I will choose the 1080V12.. Maybe because I love the orange colour so much 🙄
@@i.p2088 #orangefan 🙂👌🏽
I'm thinking to buy the Brooks next year. New Balance isn't the best for people with extreme over pronation like me.
vongo?
the 1080s for a while now have softer "blown rubber" grip on the outsole at the mid/forefoot that wears down pretty fast which is a shame, should made a version with proper rubber like the use for the heel
i have shredded mine
Which do you recommend for a wide foot, wide or extra wide? I’m confused :(
If your foot is wide, it's better to get the wide shoe. If your foot is extra wide, better to get the extra wide shoe.
nikepegasus in extra wide ;) altra/topo also
good shout
The Saucony Tempus is available in a wide. The standard width version is a fantastic shoe. I don’t normally wear a stability shoe and I love it.
@@thewalls7770 yes but tempus is wide on the middle on shoes. It is wider in the middle of the shoe, The front is still narrow, I tested it and was disappointed.
Please can we have an update on this video / subject for late 2023
Tried most of the wide models on the market right now and I'm lost now. Only shoe that barely works is the Altra Torin 7 in wide. If you're a 4E good luck finding any shoe. 😢
PEOPLE…..it‘s only Altra and Topo Athletic - just do yourself a favour and forget everything else. The major brands have fantastic tech but none of them would ever truly work for wide feet. Ask me how I know, after thousands of dollars wasted on Saucony, NB, Hoka, Nike, Brooks, Mizuno, Asics etc. wishing that they’d work for my wide feet.
Thanks for the information. What iss The widest altra shoes, my friend?
@@Nickle4489 lone peak or Olympus
your shoe size and width of your forefoot? as cm
Every foot is different. Torins work fine for me but paradigm is way too large in the ankle. Altras have poor plushiness and sole support imo, if you are not into zero drop/ground feel.
I got it and my blister completely gone away
Great video I have hobbit feet so I always struggle to get the best shoes for wide feet
Hopefully it helps
Adidas Solarglide 5 in wide are decent. But only available in black.
Oh nice shout out
Yeah New Balance are the best 👌
Topo Athletic is great for wide forefeet.
Oh also I have found this alot cheaper when I googled it
Are those your feet in the picture at the start? Look at how turned inward the big toes are. That is caused by wearing the wrong shoes. Both of the shoes you are recommending are the wrong shoe. Wide or not, the toe boxes are not foot shaped and will cause problems.
They are not that’s just a picture
I am tired of the "extra wide" shoes that are still narrow af
Video starts at 1:55
But you miss all what comes before 🤣
Are New Balance copying Asics ridiculous clown colour schemes? Asics have notably toned down their colour schemes in recent editions which is great, I wonder when New Balance will also learn that lesson.
