Got Extra Wide Feet But Don't Know What Shoes to Wear Hiking?

  • If you've wanted to go hiking but could never find the right shoes because your feet are wider than average then watch this video! Maybe your shoes are just fitting a lot tighter than they used to as you get older.
    I've lived with extra wide feet all my life and when I got older I was unhappy with the choices of shoes out there. Everything was just too narrow! Since the early 2000s though I've been using Asics and have been happy but even happier once the perfectly fitting shoe sizes were consistently avilable online or through special order.
    Since then I've been primarily wearing Asics for all the training and running of my 6 marathons, 13 half marathons, and countless smaller races. I've tried other shoes only to return to Asics since they were the only ones that reliably fit my feet comfortably.
    With my trusty Asics 9.5 4E I've successfully thru hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in 2018, a 2,650 mile trail from Mexico to Canada, and to this day still wear them throughout my other hikes.

    I was researching Altra Lone Peaks all week, was super excited to try em at REI and was sorely disappointed I couldn't find anything that fit.
    I lookup "hiking wide feet" and if course the first video I find is an Asian dude with the same issue! I'm Japanese but never realized it was a common Asian trait 😅 thanks for all the tips!

    Wow fantastic video! I came here looking for running shoes and ended up becoming interested in hiking! I bought a pair of NB 410 trail shoes as my first hiking shoes. Living in Nebraska there aren't many thru hike trails that I know of but I'm super excited to try them out this summer during camping season. Jay, thank you so much for inspiring me to get outdoors through hiking (as opposed to just trying to run). Can't wait until the next (post-AZ thru hike series) video!

    Semper Fi Jay! Thank you very much for sharing your wide feet experience and knowledge. I'm a 4E with bunions, who's been avoiding trail hiking for lack of locally supplied wide footwear. But now, after watching your video, and picking up your Asics 7 reference, I'm sure I'll be out on the trails again very soon. Best Aloha!

    Thanks Jay sooo much! I never heard of different ways for lacing shoes. I have very high arched wide feet. I combined 2 of the lacing techniques in the chart you shared and bingo!!! I wasn't wearing my Asics because even though it was very comfortable on the bottom of the foot with the gel and all it felt too tight everywhere else. Now with the different lacing method... tada!!! I owe you a big one 🙏🏼

      I ust this lacing technique all the time on both shoes. I'm glad you tried it and it worked out for you! Play with it a little like starting the vertical lacing one hole down and such. You can only guess what will help until you try them and see which works best.

    Cool stuff about lacing and knots! I'm glad you provided links, too. I'm especially interested in that not where the laces don't come undone (I have a real problem with that regarding the shoelaces ((3 types, so far)) on one manufacturer's shoes coming undone just walking).

      That place tying method can be slightly tricky to learn but it's easy once you get over the little hurdle. Have your shoes in front of you and try it out as you watch me do it. I filmed it from the 1st person viewpoint so it would be easier for anybody to mimic.

    I can really relate on what you said about the ability to hike in any shoe. One morning I woke up after a night of heavy drinking and roughly 5hrs sleep to be picked up by my mates to do a days worth of hiking (30kms estimated) in NZ.. but the silly part was I forgot to take my NB trainers and took my Nike Air Maxs (which when I bought them were too tight and blistered the crap out of my feet for the first month).
    I completed the hike with zero problems or blisters surprisingly, so just goes to show it’s not all about the shoe.

  • @hope2someday691
    @hope2someday691 3 года назад +2

    Great stuff, very interesting vlog. I had worn NB because of the wide sizes for thirty years but hated their durability. Funny, I found Asics about four years ago after a runner suggested them. Drop is another important concern. 10MM and up my right knee starts to bother me. Zero drop and the world is spinning in the right direction!

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  3 года назад

      Yes, I had two pairs of NB that felt super light and flimsy, almost too light. I didn't trust them for a thru hike so I abandoned that idea for those. It's always tough finding a good pair of shoes and hoping to keep finding more as they keep updating models.

    Excellent video on tying shoes and wide/extra wide shoes! We have a difficult time finding good shoes for my hubby....due to some shoes rub his ankle bone, he also needs a wide forefoot because he has a neuroma, and a shoe that does not stretch out his Achilles’ tendon.....Altras work for hiking but still working on a shoe for running that does not cause plantar fasciitis problems......we have had many pairs of shoes going to Goodwill for both of us--my last pair were Salomon Trail shoes that were new and gave me horrible blisters on our Trans-Catalina hike....I had worn Salomon shoes before and they worked well for me.....shoes sure be areal pain to get perfect!

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  3 года назад +3

      I know the Altras I had were flat so maybe with a supportive insole it could work out for him. Shoes really are a pain to get just right! It sucks that it takes time with a pair of shoes to see if they'll work instead of being able to tell right away. I also hate it when a model works but then a newer version of the model suddenly won't work.

    BTW, do any of the Asics have rock plates in them?

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  3 года назад +2

      From what I've seen Ascis do not have rock plates. Half of the Superfeet green is a sheet of plastic and I find it helps out a lot relative to the factory insole but even then rocks could become a pain. I've never used shoes with a full on rock plate so I have no comparison to see how much better they are.

I wish more of the companies that made shoes with wide foot shaped toe boxes made wide widths. Unfortunately every new version of the lone peaks altra puts out seems to be a different width and length and shape and it’s very hit or miss which models fit well. 😢

    I have ultra wide feet 9.5 inches 4E, both have ginormous bunions that need an ultra wide lens if I have to take pictures of them.
    Most of my previous shoes wear out easily specifically on bunion area.
    I didn’t know then that there were also shoe sizes beside what “average” people know until a specialist analysed my walking pattern and geometry of my feet. He recommended 3 brands and I picked the 4E shoes (New Balance) which fit perfectly. They are amazing and I use them for daily work which requires a lot of walking.
    They have 4Es trail shoes as well but I prefer wide Salomon Ultra boots. They provide maximum support and comfort so you maintain balance and control even in a highly difficult terrain.

    Thanks for the lacing tip. When I ran I used ASICS, then switched to Brooks Beasts because I was well over 200 lbs. I use whatever ASICS 13 4E shoe I can get for doing a 2 mile walk before lifting weights. For trail walking and light hiking I've went to Oboz Sawtooth low hikers in size 14. I feel that they give me good support and are wide enough across the forefoot not to need any innovative lacing. Merrell shoes in wide fit me but I don't think they are as sturdy as the Oboz. You need to read up on "barefoot" shoes. Wider toe box ..... not just wider across the ball of your foot. I've had trouble finding wide enough shoes my whole life. Lems Primal Zen is what finally worked for me.

  • @deadpolymers3416
    @deadpolymers3416 3 года назад

    At the ball of my foot I'm actually a normal width, but my toes are a lot wider than normal. So a regular shoe box squeezes my toes together, and my pinky toe is squeezed just under the next toe, and that rubbing was causing the pinky toe buyons. Shoes with a wide toe box, and normal width heel fit me best, and prevent the bunyons. Asics Venture and Nike Flex Control in extra wides, give you that really wide toe, without also widening the rest of the shoe. Sketchers also offers several different variations of wide shoes. Although they are kinda a bit all over the place with wide fitting, so it's best to try Sketchers on first. I've tried several models of New Balance, but their extra wides tend to widen the entire shoe, which makes the heel to side for my foot.

Before we found NB he would just go to Big box store an get a size up an lots of time they would tear up really fast. Thank you for the video, I'm a 4E club member also, I've been wearing Asics for 8 years now, Starting with Gel-Nimbus 15, and every number to 23. like you I cant find a good 4E boot so that is my go to shoe for hiking, work, motorcycle and winter/snow, because of this I wear them out fast and have to buy a new one every year. it was the only the shoe that I could find that fit well till they changed the Gel-Nimbus 23 4E and narrowed it this year and they no long fit which is a huge huge bummer. Have you tried the Venture 8 4E, did they narrow that as well this year?

    Thanks for posting on this topic. I have found that Altras fit pretty well because of toe box shape. The problem with them is the mid sole is so soft that the zero drop becomes a negative drop which, if used long enough changes your gait. I have found that any shoe with a 5 mm drop or greater destroys my hips and back. Any suggestions?

I also like to see there face in the store when i go in. Im 5'7" 130 pounds max, with my belt buckle. You can order your size and have them ship to store. Try them on and return if they don't fit:-). My feet still feel cramped in some 4E shoes. I also have very flat feet and very few shoes are wide enough in the midfoot to fully support my custom orthotic. It ends up cutting holes in my shoes. It really sucks when you have to spend $100+ on shoes for them to wear out in a few months.

    Hello Jay thank you for this video about the Asics venture shoes. I am normally a new balance 880 guy. 10.5 2E is what I normally wear. lately I have felt like I need to go up to an 11 in my shoes my right foot especially feels like it has less room anymore in the toe box and above the foot or midfoot. So anyway I wanted to get a roomie pair of shoes. I thought at first about getting just a 11 2E in the New Balance. But I went ahead and bought a pair of the Asics Gel Venture 7 in 11 4E. Because my experience with Asics before was that they are quite narrow. I got them and they fit great I actually have plenty of toe box room and midfoot room I think I actually could have went with a 10.5 4e. I tried a pair of them in a store and 10.5 2E just seem too snug or too tight. Anyway I was going to put a pair of the Superfeet blue inserts in. But the insole is not removable in the shoe it is glued down tight. How do you put your inserts in ? do you just put them in right on top of the original insole in the shoe or do you tear the insole outt of the shoe that's in there and put your Superfeet orthotics in? Any helpful information would be great I am sitting on a pair of shoes right now that I can't wear because I feel like they're just too flat and don't have enough arch support. I have medium 2 medium low arches but not flat feet at all but I cannot handle super arch support it hurts my foot. Again any information would be great on how you do your inserts with your gel Venture 7 shoes look forward to hearing from you thanks

Although I was pleasantly surprised at the width in the Gel Venture XW.. plenty of toe box and foot room.. anyways would you order the inserts to size 11 or go up to 11.5 or where it supports my foot in the shoe? They can be cut in the front and I heard that helps

Supply chain issues aren't helping. I have only found two sneakers that fit me (not for hiking): Hoka Bondi 7 4E and Ghost 14 4E (wish it had as much cushioning as the Glycerin which only comes in 2E). I have to remove the insert. I have an orthortic with a pad I have to add for proper fit for metatarsalgia/neuromas....You're so lucky you found something. Jealous. Love you're tying options. Wide is Not wide.
    At Trekking Boots wide goes with more or less strong feet incl. wide heel-bone.
    How wide your feet is you can Tell wearing e.g. Ballop SkinFit Triangle V1 until the feet are raising Up again. Just put for the first 1...2 weeks the insoles Hamann Active X4 in the shoes. Then wear the Original insoles and then leacmve the insoles away.
    Then you will See that Joe Nimble nimbletoes Addict and Trail Addict are good shoes.
    Topo has No sickle-shaped last. Bär / Baer and Joe Nimble does like adidas (e.g. Terrex R3, Skychaser 2.0 and the new Speed-Series incl. Speed Pro and Speed SG).
