My hobby space is in my house with my family, so I try to keep the toxic stuff down, and IPA can be pretty nasty when in vapor form. I have played around with PGA, but it's more expensive than what I want to spend. I even considered denatured alcohol but the additives in it are as problematic as IPA. That sounds like an absolute blast!
I use rinse aid and rubbing alcohol mix. I never use water in my homemade thinners. If my paints dry too fast then I will use a drop of glycerin.
