Bryan's Hobbies
США
Добавлен 25 июл 2012
Hi, I'm Bryan, and this is Bryan's Hobbies. A RUclips channel about, well, my hobbies. I have many hobbies; in fact, I describe my overall hobby as "amabam discere," Latin for "a hobby to learn." Or, in simpler terms, I collect Hobbies. My newest passion as of late is building model kits, and I thank RUclips for introducing it to me.
It typically works like this; something new grabs my attention, and then I want to learn as much as I can about it. This usually involves me becoming obsessed with the topic, collecting as many tools as I can't afford, and spending hours trying to perfect it. So I invite you to follow along as I learn how to build model kits.
Thanks for following along, and if you like what you see, you know what to do.

Painting and Weathering My Scrap Display Base
Welcome to part 2 of the Scrap Built Display Base. As I finished up the primer, I started imagining what colors I wanted on this, and rust was what came to the top. Continuing with the theme of reusing and upcycling, I chose a color palette that I had used previously, which was a little rusty.
If you missed part 1, I recommend going back and taking a look at that.

A Display Base Made Out Of Scraps
Просмотров 16921 день назад
I was looking for a quick project while cleaning up my bench when inspiration struck, and an unassuming piece of cardboard suddenly became a display base. Follow along as I improvise my way through the process of turning a pile of scraps into a display base for one of my models. This is part 1. It ran a little long, so I made it into two videos. A Less Toxic DIY Acrylic Paint Thinner That Works
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.2 месяца назад
This is a follow-up to the acrylic thinner portion of the video I made about airbrushing craft paint the right way. As usual, I'm always experimenting and tweaking different things to see if I can improve their performance, and this thinner was no different. After just a little bit of messing around, I've come up with something that works equally as well as the store-bought options at a fractio...

Airbrushing for Scale Modelers, a Fine Scale Modeler Book Review,
Просмотров 3546 месяцев назад
I wanted to do a quick review of this book I came across on Amazon. It is Airbrushing for Scale Modelers by Aaron Skinner. Beyond the basics, the topics covered in this book are pretty comprehensive, from using an airbrush for pre and post-shading, masking, painting small-scale items, creating soft edges with masking, silly putty, and poster putty. It is well illustrated, and the directions are...
DIY Hot Wire Foam Cutter from stuff I have lying around.
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.7 месяцев назад
It's not really meant to be a tutorial, there are better ones on the web for making a hot wire cutter than this one. I thought might be interesting to watch the problem solving that goes into using the materials you have on hand. The only thing I purchased for this build was the nickel chromium wire. Everything else was stuff I already had or scavenged from around the house. In case you're not ...

Can I make my own Paint + Primer out of inexpensive Craft Paint?

This test scratches an itch I've had for a while now. Not that long ago towards the end of my Military Bulldozer build I was attempting some weathering down along the running gear and the bottom of the chassis. For whatever reason the chipping fluid I was using was not letting go of the top coat of paint and everything I tried was just going straight through all the way to the plastic. which wa...

This is a minimally edited time-lapse of my AH S1 Cobra Build. Basically, it's just me enjoying the kit. Chipping Fluid Rust Effects Gone Rogue!

Chipping Fluid Rust Effects Gone Rogue!
8:45 can't stress it enough: 5 thin coats is 1000x better than 2 thick. I spray all kinds of materials through all types of g-u-n-s and this is the key to a proper finish. Now, with that being said, I rarely spray high gloss finishes, if you want that, at some point you'll have to spray a thicker finish so the surface is "wet" and shiny. I find it best to spray the last coat while the previous coat is still tacky so it "holds" the last wet coat.
To make it shiny or to spray it shiny, that is a question and a proper topic worth exploring. Thank you very much!!
@@bryanshobbies that's a good way to put it! spray or make it because there are different ways to achieve a gloss finish. As a custom woodworker, I hate gloss because it hides the details of the wood. I also make custom wood signs, and people complain about the satin finish. I say "do you want to see how those nice details or not?
You forgot the chalk. A key ingredient.
Love the sprue, parts, tool holder. Have plenty of cardboard to do one.
Cool, thanks for watching!
I have been using Vallejo acrylics and also cheap craft acrylics on my models and sometimes the craft acrylics looks better, specially the metallic finish ones. I use my Iwata Neo with 0.35mm nozzle with good results but recently bought a cheap Vevor airbrush with a 0.50 mm nozzle and works very well as well. My thinner/cleanner formula is 75% distilled water + 25% rubbing IPP alcohol (99%) plus a few drops of dishwasher. Thanks for the tips and posting the video
Thank you very much for watching. Also, I'm going to check out this Vevor airbrush, I'm looking for a replacement for my old Frankenstein one. I think I killed dead after forgetting to clean it one too many times.
Thx.. good advice I'm new to modeling thank you for showing us how to save money. This hobby can be very expensive...
I'm glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
….and don’t feel bad about being a “tight wad” 👍( I am one too ) I take the same $ approach. You can save enough using craft paints to afford more models at the swap meet. 😄
Yes, absolutely!! 💯
Another neat trick I use is blending between 35% and 50% MinWax PolyCrylic ( you can use gloss, satin or flat or any blend thereof ) I have found for regular primer and color coats 35% works great. Last 2 color coats you can go up to 50% Polyurethane. Wet sand each primer and color coat til smooth. Gloss coat with MinWax Polycrilic then you can polish & buff to a high gloss. Some steps you left out 1. STIR your paint before you thin it. 2. Then thin it by weight ( I thin my Acrylic craft paint about the consistency of melted ice cream ) last step you left out. 3. FILTER your thinned paint before it goes into the airbrush ( stainless steel mesh tea strainer / funnel ) this last step takes out any large particles that may be “floating” in your paint. ( you’ll be amazed what you find in the filter - that DOES NOT end up going through your airbrush ) your approach is SPOT ON. I agree 100% that “model paints” are grossly over priced almost to the point of “rip off” $5/$7/$9 for a tiny 1/2 oz to 2 ounce bottle is laughable. I can go to Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Wal Mart or the Dollar store, and for $ 1.50-$ $3.00 I can get enough paint to paint several models. Do you “blend” polyurethane? You should try it. Is is an excellent “bonder” and dries as tough as nails. Great video I’ll subscribe and watch for more. I’ll try the wetting agent too. ( I already use glycerin) keep it up. 👍😎👌
For air brush what u mixed to model color? Paint thinner or simply water
I use a homemade recipe. If you look on my channel, you'll see a couple of videos where I talked about it. Thanks for watching!
i have the same printer but when i put the shelves into my slicer they overhang my build plate and i dont know why
Check the scale it should fit right on there
Thank you for the build. I'm interested to see where this will go on part 3. Good job Bryan!!!
So am I, thanks for watching!
Tremendous video. Great video quality too. S22 plus?
It is an S21 actually but with just a touch of post-processing. My old eyeballs require a lot of light, more than is necessary for video, so I usually have to tweak it just a little bit. Thanks for watching!
@@bryanshobbies of course. Thank you for the content you create! 🙏👍
Been doing this since a freind turned me on too craft paint... In automotive modelling that requires a smooth and shiney finsh to mirror glass..craft paint as base coat and 2k clear are very hard to beat once you have the spray technic down...and the craft paint will not attack the plastic or have a reaction even years down the line...like rustolem, krylon and others...with kit prices going up and rare kits that may not ever be reissued it makes sense not to ruin a model with bargain solvent based paints.... Or stick to the higher priced modelling paints. .. But craft paint is a viable way to save money and achieve great results.
I learned how to use an air sprayer helping my granddad restore old cars. It just seemed natural to me that those same principles would apply to an airbrush but haven't seen anybody applying them. I appreciate the comments, and thanks for watching!
Very nice video a lot of great ideas that I would of never thought of. I guess now I will have to think about throwing cardboard thank you for the great videos
Thank you. I appreciate that! Word of advice on the cardboard, though, don't start saving it until you have some idea what you're going to make. Otherwise, it will take over. 🤪
Hello ; How many ml of water should we put 6 drops of glycerin and 6 drops of dishwashing detergent rinse aid? Is the water you put the dishwasher rinse aid and glycerin pure water? Thank you very much for the information.
Roughly 1 L will work just fine.
You might check out my video feed, though I've done an update on that recipe.
@@bryanshobbies thankyou
I think we are all 'tightwads' - but the results look like a million bucks. You are awesome sir
I appreciate that. Thank you for watching!

Great video! Does the glycerin only affect drying time or does it also improve flow? I don’t need my airbrush paint to dry slow so I’m wondering if leaving out the glycerin will change more than the drying time
Yes, glycerin in and of itself is also a wetting agent and helps with flow.
Can i use your thinner for Vallejo airbrush paints ? 🤍
Yes absolutely!
The best video on craft paint thinning i have seen. And i prefer your mixture for thinner than the window cleaner/alcohol mixtures i have tried in the past
I appreciate that. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for sharing this video. I was using water by itself and it was working but i was having clogging issues from time to time. I will try the water, dishwasher rinse aid and glycerine mix for sure. Thanks again ♠️J
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Can this formula be used with interior grade Latex paint? I work in the haunted house industry and on occasion I have to paint on a larger scale with an automotive style gravity fed spray gun.
Yes, it will work, but you have to be careful. You can thin acrylic paint pretty heavy, but for latex, I would probably say somewhere between 10 to 20% thinner to paint or it'll run really bad. Other than that, my advice is the same, the thinner the paint, the lighter the coat.
@bryanshobbies thank you very much. I will keep that all in mind. I only plan to get it thin enough to flow thru my spray gun. As I also know thinning will be different for different colors as to the amount of pigment. Thank you again for your advise. Your video was full of helpful information.
Good tip 👍, thanks for not making it 10 minutes long 🙂
🤣 thanks
One last thing Bryan. You can use pure polysorbate 20 instead of the dishwashing stuff. It costs next to nothing and for lab work and for stuff like this, it will last a lifetime. It's used in cosmetics and it doesn't include the stuff in dishwashing fluid that pulls minerals together. That might ruin some paints where a pigment relies on that specific mineral.
Thanks Bryan. Just ran across this video. Nice to see a smart dude helping people out with something that doesn't have a lot of great answers but you provided the best.
any words of wisdom anyone conerning going off-road baja version?
Not really, but that sounds like it might be an interesting kit bash project. Thanks for watching!
I am confused , pls sir did u add the dishwasher mix or thinner ? Is this for water acrylic or oil acrylic ? Also please make video for using airbrush in every step if i need to change colour , and please what time to wait until i add another coat ? The last thing can i use hair dryer to let the paint dry ? Thanks a lot in advance 🙏🌸🌸🌸
It's only for water-based acrylic, and the dishwasher mix is the thinner. I also like your video idea, and I'm going to put some thought into that. Thanks for watching!
@ thanks 🌸🌸🌸🌸
Brilliant info Bryan! 75 year old artist here needing to thin craft paint for using in jumbo refillable acrylic markers with 15 mm fiber tips. Paint needed to be "ink" consistency which then allows me to grab it with a stiff stippling brush from the fiber marker tip in small controlled amounts to apply in very detailed work on black surface canvas. I did add one drop of alcohol to this most recent recipe for mold growth inhibition and after 2 weeks it is still mold free with no odor. Feeling so fortunate to have found you on line quite by accident and your down to earth style with such usable info keeps me inspired to create every day. From one experimenter to another..... Thank you again 🙏👏
Thank you very much, I appreciate the thought!
I'm a cake artist, I airbrush colored cocoa butter. Paint isn't anything compared to heavy greasy particles of chocolate. I gave up on my homemade boxes and bought a professional box that vents out of the kitchen window. It got to a point when i airbrushed using very thinned food colorings my homemade box allowed color to go everywhere. I hated spending the money but the time it took to clean up after was worth the money. Loved your video.
is it just regular vegetable glycerin? USP grade?
Yes, the brand I have is Equate, I think I might have gotten it at Walmart.
amazing video never knew about glycerin or where to get it. I'm painting warhammer miniatures and board game minis...
Bryan... THANK YOU!!!

Just tried this with my cheap amazon acrylic paint, works great for larger surfaces! Thank you!
The eye solution must have low surface tension.
Thank you !
Great, thank you so much for your help.
This is great and all, but if I had any idea where to get vegetable glycerin, wouldn't I also be able to get paint thinner? I am a beginner, not being rude, but really asking.
Any pharmacy should have it also many Beauty suppliers carry vegetable glycerin and there's always Amazon. That said, don't get hung up on the glycerin it's not critical. You can achieve fantastic results without adding it at all.
Another source of the paint filters is a paint store. The Sherman Williams store near me sells cone filters for latex paint for about 75¢ each and I remove the the screen which is either a 190 or a 226 micron filter screen about 4" square.
I am new to airbrushing as a hobby and appreciate your attempts to make this more cost effective where possible. I did have one question coming out of this I have not seen mentioned in other videos and that was filtering the craft paint mixture before using. What did you use to filter it with?
Is it a problem if the rinse aid foams up a bit when stirred?
Thank you so very much for sharing. Ordering some rinse aid now
Extremely informative and easily understood thanks
