    13/14...caught on the purpose of shore power but I believe that you are incorrect. "Connecting to Grid power for battery power" as the answer...but what about when I'm connected to my RV with my generated? It's AC power connected via the shore power plug charging my battery and has nothing to do with grid power.

    • @EXPLORISTlife

      Ha! Yeah, true. But don't get caught up in the makes and models of each manufacturers products yet. An inverter, regardless of if it comes from Victron, Midnite, Outback, Schneider, etc is all going to convert DC power stored in a battery bank into AC power for standard household devices.
      All of those aforementioned companies have their own names for each of their components, so once you figure out what type of component you need, and which manufacturer you want to use, you can figure out what that manufacturer calls their model lines.
      Side Quest: If you want to see some REALLY unhelpful model lines, go check out the models of RVs available. It's always like the Fleetline Flamingo GH745-i
      And now that I say that... that's also how graphics cards and CPUs are named...

    14/14. This is a great video. I needed this explanation of the various components of an off-grid electrical system before spending untold hours over the last two months watching RV electrical system upgrade videos! Prior to watching this video I was still uncertain about the difference between a dc-dc converter and a dc-dc charger, nor did I understand exactly how battery isolators worked.

    13/14 Thanks for clarifying the difference between a DC/DC isolator and the DC/DC charger. I have an isolator in my first van (with a DC breaker on the van battery side). I try to keep the breaker off unless I specifically need to alternator charge the battery bank. Is that necessary?

    I got 13/14... but I'd like to argue for that missing point. lol.
    Question 3, about the primary purpose of a shore power charger.
    Yes, it can connect to grid power, but also, a generator, a solar generator, or even another RV's inverter...
    Therefore, although the 'correct answer', is indeed, applicable, I believe the choice of "Converting AC power to DC power for battery charging", is a 'more correct' answer. lol.
    (think of it not as a 'shore power charger', but rather, an 'AC to DC charger').
    I'm raising my score to 14/14.
    (I scrolled a short bit and see a few folks claiming 13/14... I wonder how many of them were tripped up by question 3?)
    Anyway, this series(Academy) seems like it will be a good thing... especially for those who think electricity is that "Tingly Stuff on Your Tongue", when you touch it to a 9 volt battery. lol.🤔
    Keep pushing SAFETY! I've been shocked by 120AC, and who knows how much DC from a park plug... and have... I mean had, a good friend who died when drilling into a concrete basement wall, hitting a 240AC line.
    these systems are, actually, very safe, IF!!! they are designed and installed correctly.
    We don't want any of 'Nate's Nation' to become a statistic! When in doubt, seek advice from a pro! Do NOT be 'that guy', who THOUGHT he knew what he was doing.🤪
    👍🏼✌🏼🇨🇦

      Haha! Ah, yes... my least favorite types of questions back when I was on the other end of these quizzes. Choose the MOST correct answer + What is the PRIMARY function. 🤣😂

    • @BorealisNights
      @BorealisNights 7 месяцев назад

      @@EXPLORISTlife The "Primary Function", is to turn AC into DC, regardless of the source. lol.
      Remember, depending on how and where you travel, you may sometimes come to a place where "Shore Power", is the wrong type for your "Shore Power" charger... just like DC to DC chargers only work under the correct conditions. A 24 to 12 is not gonna work in a complete 12 volt system, unless you bring in a 24 volt outside supply.
      What might be 'the most correct' answer, to you, might be different for someone else... so 'the most correct answer', should be the one that excludes a single use, when multiple uses are possible.
      Even Victron doesn't call them "shore power" chargers, but rather, "AC Chargers".
      Anyway, this is all in fun, Bud.
      Love your content, for years!👍🏼
      Keep up the good work, and as I said, don't ever think you can offer too many safety warnings.✌🏼🇨🇦

      For the guidebooks, those are digital downloads that there were links on the receipt page. We tried to re-send those to you in your email, but since it bounced back, you probably didn't get that.
      So yeah... fix your email issues and then reach back out and we will send over your guidebooks.

    Hi, Thanks for another good video I wish I had seen a couple of years ago - would have saved a lot of frustration!! Furthermore, your instruction /build videos are the best!
    I am coming from the boat side of things. There seems to be some differences between that domain and RVs (++). For one thing the switched and un-switched parts of a system is important - all charging devices basically being on the un-switched part and all loads on the switched. Also some differences between ground from chassis and from engine block.
    Anyways - I have a question regarding your DC-DC charger section. All information from trustworthy sources on the boat "domain", like Nigel Calder and Jeff Cote, say that there has to be a lead-acid battery between the alternator and the lithium house bank. The DC-DC charger connecting the two.
    I have tried to investigate why a DC-DC charger cannot be connected as you suggest. The best answer I have got, on a Victron community, is that the alternator "rectified, unfiltered DC output, from an AC source. Might not be the ideal input for the Orion."
    Would really appreciate your comment to this!

    • @EXPLORISTlife
      @EXPLORISTlife  7 месяцев назад

      For actual installation and not just basic understanding of what a DC DC Charger does like discussed in this video, yes, there needs to be a starting battery on the 'input' side of the DC DC charger.
      An alternator needs a battery to charge, so in the case of a DC DC charger, if you connected an alternator directly to a DC DC charger with no battery anywhere on that side, the alternator wouldn't be connected to a Battery... it'd just be connected to a DC DC charger.
      If your alternator is going direct to the house battery, it should just be set up w/ a external voltage regulator (wakespeed or similar) so that it is connected directly to a battery in much the same way the alternator would be charging a starting battery.

    What size shunt should be with a Victron 3000w interveter 500amp, 1000amp?

    • @EXPLORISTlife
      @EXPLORISTlife  7 месяцев назад +1

      In short: A shunt should be sized to handle the number of amps flowing through it. With a 3000W Inverter, that is only 250A at 12V (and less at 24/48V), so both a 500A and a 1000A would be appropriate.
      All of the system designs found in our shop at shop.explorist.life include all of the appropriately sized shunts for their various systems.

      The chemistry of batteries doesn't have anything to do with what all of the individual parts & components do. Perhaps next time, watch the video with an open mind instead of with the intention of talking shit and maybe you'll learn something new. If not; and you don't think this channel is for you anymore (which is an absurd mindset), you can just click to a different video you feel will meet your needs. This isn't an airport. No need to announce your departure.
