We had never heard anything like it. Dillinger was in the mouths of everyone but then messhuga came along and took over as king of that genera. They went to open for tool in a huge tour for laterallus. Those were awesome times. That was an amazing tour.
I disagree with comparing DEP to BMTH and Killswitch. Converge, definitely. BMTH was pretty damn average and Killswitch wrote really damn good music that showed proficient musicality. But they don’t compare to the audio harassment of DEP in anyway or incoporate the math/jazz influences of DEP’s music.
There's a book that parodies real life people and events(though some say it is not a parody, but is in fact a true historical account) called "The Illuminatus Trilogy" by Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea. The stories of the 1920's bank robber John Dillinger escaping from prison using a block of wood shaped as a gun are legendary, but in this book they portray John Dillinger as the leader of a subversive political movement, who could escape from jail by rearranging his atoms so he could walk thru walls. Just thought I'd throw that out there as an interesting side note in reference to their name.
When I hear something 'mispronounced', as in with this video, I wonder if; a) I've been mispronouncing that band name, all this time, b) The speaker cannot pronounce the band name correctly, c) The speaker doesn't KNOW how the band name is pronounced, d) I'm a pedantic cunt I suspect option d) is a dead-cert but other than that, I don't know.
imagine doing a documentary about a band and not even learning how to pronounce the name... it's so cringe when people who obviously never went to see a band start doing stuff like this...bruh you're no expert, you weren't there, you searched wikipedia
You can't put Killswitch Engage and Bring me the Horizon as contemporaries/originators like Dillinger and Converge. That is so so wrong and really annoying
Eh too much of their stuff sounds like just noise to me, like almost the sterotype of what somone who has no idea about Rock or Metal thinks all Metal sounds like. I do like a handful of the songs and I like the weird melodies and jazz elements. But when I say handful I mean literalyl 6 songs. Tastes I guess. But for some reason any genre with "core" in it just sounds like noise to me.
1999 was a banner year for hardcore. So many seminal albums came out that year. When you listed those "giants of metalcore," you should have just focused on the albums that came out around that time and effectively influenced hardcore and metalcore for all the years to come. Here's some great albums from 1999 (aside from Calculating Infinity): Poison the Well- The Opposite of December Cave In- Until Your Heart Stops Coalesce- 012: Revolution in Just Listening Integrity- Integrity 2000 God Forbid- Reject the Sickness Botch- We Are the Romans
Thanks for sharing this! I'm not too familiar with the genre. Especially not from any particular decade. So if i knew this before i'd definitely check it out and include it.
I only ever got into Ire Works and the Irony is a Dead Scene EP, but their earlier EP and album sounds like they're worth a listen too. Have a lot of nostalgia for Milk Lizard, and since Greg's vocals often tend to sound somewhere between Mike Patton and early Brent Hinds' harsh vocals (think Remission/Leviathan era Brent vocals), it only makes sense that they ended up getting Brent in to do guest vocals on Horse Hunter. Not particularly a big fan of Greg's vocals in general though, so I tend to lean more towards the Mike Patton EP.
Same here. Ire Works was the first record that i ever listened to by them. And then Option Paralysis. Love those records! And i like the way you compare Greg's voice to Mike and Brent. I definitely hear that similarity. Did you see the Mastodon reference at 4:58 btw?
I saw Dillinger with Thursday right after miss machine came out and as soon as Dillinger hit the stage they opened up with Panasonic Youth and Greg was already crowd surfing by the word plans. It was fucking Epic. To the guy that made the video, you got to do a follow-up and continue the band's history because miss machine is by far the best album and not for nothing but option paralysis and dissociation are absolute works of art and examples of how musicians can go so far outside the box and so beyond what people's concept of music is and be so beautiful and poignant about it. There is no band as original as Dillinger, and there will never be anything like them again. I also hail from New Jersey, ain't nobody do it like mo fukkers from Jersey do it!!!!!!!! I will forever love Dillinger
Man i hate the fact that i might never be able to see them live. They have to be one of the craziest and best live bands i've ever seen videos of. Anyways, about your request for a follow-up video: that's exactly what i had in mind. My favorite albums are Ire Works and Option Paralysis. So there will be more of this coming in the future. Thanks for watching and reaching out!
Was it Greg who took a shit in a bag threw it out into the crowd only for it to come back and he ripped it open and smeared it all over him? Think it was Reading festival.
Dillinger Escape Plan and Mars Volta fandoms are so weird. Dep fans will only recognize their first album and dismiss everything after that while a lot of Mars Volta fans don't like their first ep and album but glorify everything from Frances the Mute onwards. Deloused in the Comatorium and Ire Works are actually two of my favorite albums ever so I always feel left out of the discussion.
Deloused and Ire Works are awesome too imo. My favorite TMV album has to be Bedlam, but with Dillinger i rather prefer their newer albums. Maybe i'm not a typical fan.
@@LieLikesMusic lool, you're definitely not the typical TMV fan if Bedlam is your favorite since most fans hate that album ( i love it). I hope you do cover the Greg Puciato era DEP which i think is the some of the best and iinnovative music of the 2000's.
I know the title means that you're just focusing on the '97-99 era, but I kinda feel like that was the real lifespan of the band. I pretty much lost interest in these guys when they replaced most original members and got a Mike Patton impersonator on the mic. When the band's emphasis became melodic vocals and choruses, they started using the crazy technical guitar stuff as sort of the equivalent of a guitar solo instead of making it the backbone of their songs.
What rock band/artist should be next?

@@LieLikesMusic sure mate....keep up the good work...your effort makes this genre really understandable to the people who think its just noise... you seriously bring out the philosophical aspects of this genre so gently that for the future generations it would be a lot easier to understand the raw emotions of their forefathers' musicality...... and also how and why they put their hearts out in writing lyrics on whatever they felt....one can actually study the musical behaviours of various artists from your channel....way to go brother...

Such an awesome band. I remember seeing them with Mr Bungle and the following go around at the Troubadour at LA. Every show was an experience. Thank you for the video Bro.
I an imagine. Would've died to be there myself. And no worries. I'm glad you like it.
Lie Likes Music dude. It was an awesome mosh pit. I went with my bass player and his girlfriend. I got to speak with them for a bit after the show. Really cool dudes.
Wow. That’s not at all how you pronounce the name. It’s dill-in-JER. Since you pronounced the literal sound of the letters. JER. Not GRRR. 😂
When I hear something 'mispronounced', as in with this video, I wonder if;
a) I've been mispronouncing that band name, all this time,
b) The speaker cannot pronounce the band name correctly,
c) The speaker doesn't KNOW how the band name is pronounced,
d) I'm a pedantic cunt
I suspect option d) is a dead-cert but other than that, I don't know.
I had to stop watching 2 minutes in because of how u pronounce Dillinger...
Okay,
was that ending on purpose ?
That was on purpose yes. Guess a proper conclusion would've made more sense. But i thought Ben Weinman did a good job himself.
imagine doing a documentary about a band and not even learning how to pronounce the name... it's so cringe when people who obviously never went to see a band start doing stuff like this...bruh you're no expert, you weren't there, you searched wikipedia
Here's some great albums from 1999 (aside from Calculating Infinity):
Poison the Well- The Opposite of December
Cave In- Until Your Heart Stops
Coalesce- 012: Revolution in Just Listening
Integrity- Integrity 2000
God Forbid- Reject the Sickness
Botch- We Are the Romans
Thanks for sharing this! I'm not too familiar with the genre. Especially not from any particular decade.
So if i knew this before i'd definitely check it out and include it.
The same breath as bring me the horizon? Seriously?
Love those
records! And i like the way you compare Greg's voice to Mike and Brent. I definitely hear that similarity. Did you
see the Mastodon reference at 4:58 btw?
Lie Likes Music I feel somewhat ashamed that the reference is still lost on me. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious haha.
They have to be one of the craziest and best live bands
i've ever seen videos of. Anyways, about your request for a follow-up video: that's exactly what i had in mind. My favorite
albums are Ire Works and Option Paralysis. So there will be more of this coming in the future. Thanks for watching and reaching out!
Was it Greg who took a shit in a bag threw it out into the crowd only for it to come back and he ripped it open and smeared it all over him? Think it was Reading festival.
Take it back further. Rorschach anyone? Craw? Blowing minds and valves from early 90's
I asked for this video to be made when I first found this channel. Thank you for doing a video on my favourite band! :)
My favorite TMV album has to be Bedlam, but with Dillinger i rather prefer
their newer albums.
Dude, you gotta pronounce the name of the band right if you want fans to watch this video...just saying.
the real dillinger, not the current fake!
please Dimitri, come back singing!
Hard G like saying germ(any)
Thanks for letting me know
How dare you compare Dillinger to kiklwitch and bring me the horizon. Shame on you
Like why pronounce it with G and not J... it’s pronounced Dillinjer you fool.
You missed an opportunity to title this video "Understand Decay" as a reference one of their songs. 🤣
Do John Maus
this was when Dillinger was Dillinger escape plan, after this they sucked!
DEP > BTBAM > PTH. FACTS!
I think Greg was the best thing that ever happened to the DEP
Dil-en-jer...
Now that you did
Dillinger you gotta do The chariot
You lost me on the 2nd word. It's pronounced dyilengiery
Jeff was in The Shat when he joined Dillinger.
Cool, thanks for adding that. I didn't know.
I turned this video off as soon as I heard bring me the haircuts mentioned
8:01 what the fuck??? sempiternal???? i dont know whether to laugh or throw my laptop across the room
I dunno. If i were you i'd laugh
Fishbone
It’s DillinGer… with a G in it.. Not Dilliner 😂
One of my favorite bands! So sad I never got to see them live
Could we get a Get Up Kids episode? I always enjoyed their music but i dont know much about them. The Promise Ring even:)
I hope for a video on thier album "Something to Write Home About" one of my favorite Emo albums ever.
You’re so beautiful.
Spit on yourself.
