Chris Pennie was/is just as an important piece to the history of The Dillinger Escape Plan...
Billy rymer is a beast also
You can make a strong case Calculating is the best drum album of all time.
@mikesomersdrummer8042 Calculating Infinity and Irony is a dead scene are obscure classics..
@@EyeintheSky-Ep Calc maybe the best or most ground breaking album of all time. He everything you shouldnt and its unreal glorious. I still rook it to this day and it blows me away
Unbelievable he recorded all guitars himself. Genius.
starlodear for sure.
I think bass too
Lautaro Mansilla A bass is a kind of guitar, as in “bass guitar”, so it counts under that
Plz do a full documentary on DEP!!! Christina,You’re the one to do it!!!
Benoit is credited as playing guitar on calculating infinity too
ben and Chris were pioneers in music... that doesn't often get said for musicians. serious album.
Crazy that it was all recorded to tape without a computer
Haha, computers were a joke for recording back then, unless you were doing electro stuff. Pro Tools and the other big DAW's started back in the mid 80's with Atari/Mac/Sony PC's, but studios were still all about tape. Digital was a sin even after the tech caught up. A lot of my favorite music was done on "cheap"ish tape machines in early 90's- 2000's. Dillinger is sooo good live, I saw them here in Baltimore(Greg's hometown) and they were insane. Greg blew fire and the liquid hit my face. They got fined like 10 grand because indoor pyro had just been banned because of the Great White concert tragedy.
I encourage you to learn more of the history of DAWs my dude, Soundstream was the first DAW created in 1977, and Pro Tools was officially released in 89 and was still incredibly limited on what could be done until the mid 90s. And pretty much all the albums that were done on tape were on expensive machines, there’s no way around that haha. Even if you can find a cheapish tape machine, tape is expensive, and parts/maintenance is hella expensive. But worth it in my opinion, that glorious pure analog sound 🔥
This album is almost part of a set for me.
Calculating infinity, and Converges "Jane Doe", go together like a pair of socks for me.
Neurosis - Through Silver In Blood?
And Botch’s we are the romans came out between 1999’s CI and 2001’s Jane Doe. *edit* I got this wrong, Botch’s We Are The Romans was released in 1999. American Nervoso from Botch was in 1998, when that came out a few years previous songs like “Thank God For Worker Bees,” “John Woo,” and “Hutton’s Great Machine Engine” were like nothing I’d heard in terms of composition. Still rock those tracks regularly. And KARP’s s/t album. Perfect work out music.
@@RustinChole yeah and I'd throw in anything Coalesce did but particularly '012 Revolution in Listening' man..late 90s through mid 2000s we were spoiled for choice on heavy music
@@DNashvegas lol man that reminds me - I saw Coalesce on the “Functioning on Impatience” tour, they opened with the song “you can’t kill us all,” - the band was setting up, I didn’t realize the singer was right behind me, (I was right up front and center of course) and he launched into the vocals that open that song but without a mic. “What more do you want from me….” and the crowd was shocked into total silence, and we made room around the guy, the drums kicked in with the vocals, but still no mic, then the guitarist threw the mic to the lead singer in perfect time for him to bellow “YOU CAN’T KILL US ALL” and the whole band kicked in.🤦🏻♂️
Afterwards, I went up to him and was like “holy fucking SHIT man. You guys rock balls.” He looked at me casually while wrapping up his mic chord, and said “oh yeah. I know.”😂
Jesuit opened that show, epic. I miss when every city had a legit hometown hero act like Botch, or The Locust, (or anything JP or 31G related) Coalesce, Converge, Dillinger, just a tsunami of young, unbelievably talented trailblazers. The VSS, KARP, Clikitat Ikatowi, Shotmaker, …. I’d trade the internet and iPhones etc for a thriving DIY scene like that, if it was possible. I know it sounds silly but if I had a time machine, seeing BOTCH in 1998 at a tiny club in Olympia would be my first stop. Next would be Drive Like Jehu and Unwound, with Sunnyday Real Estate opening, back in 1992.
Ashamed to say I’ve thought about this alot.
However I do think there’s amazing music being made, by Deaf Club, METZ is okay, Daughters is over but the last records (like the ones before it) was brilliant, super bummed I just missed Black Midi in seattle after stumbling on their new single “welcome to hell.” Black Country New Road is a lot like …. Slint, A Minor Forest, and Neutral Milk Hotel and I mean that in a really good way….let’s see…… IDLES is pretty good…. I like the new The Smile album….
But it’s not like …. If you had asked me to list my favorite DIY acts in 2000 it would’ve been pages long. Now I only find maybe a few records a year to get legit excited about.
You make too much sense man lol
Maybe the best DEP video I've ever seen.

I always thought Obscura by Gorguts was a huge influence on this album so was surprised it didn't get a mention in the interview. Just remembered these albums only got released a year apart. Weird coincidences.
Gorguts + Deadguy = Dillinger
Calculating Infinity redefined extremity when it came out...it changed my world.
Still absolute captivating album by one the all time greats !!!
Dimitri's vocals were amazing

Great Interview! Thank you very much for doing this.
So glad I got to see these guys live multiple times.
Really enjoyed this. Thanks for putting it together \m/
You're welcome!
Love this interview. Would love one just like this about Miss Machine!!! :)
It’s was recorded analog. That’s the explanation of why it sounds so good.
Who's explanation?
@@brandsmith72 most people,s because analog sounds better than digital, you are like the kids who says 'but why' when something is explained to you, you are on the internet look it up if you don't know..
@@brandsmith72 musicians? music fans? people who know about sound..
A very smart guy , just like his music.
Ben is a righteous and very smart guy....and he's from New Jersey. I wanna track with him one day.
Hey! I have that same shirt Ben!
Music is what science can not explain, say with me, “Oh yeah”
Awesome back to the past interview
Calculating Infinity basically destroyed everything for metalcore bands in its wake haha
So Ben influenced Chris on what everybody calls the “Pennie blast beat” ? I fuckin love it❤
Do an interview with hr from bAd BRaiNs ...
Would love to! I need to go on a shooting trip out of Australia, badly :)
Haha !!! I enjoy your interviews all the way from Porterville ca ... lol ... cyco Miko Muir from SUICIDAL lives in Australia met him 2 years ago kool ass dude ... true true legend ... take care of yourself ...
Thanks for the support! Funnily enough, Ben from DEP is touring with Suicidal I think :)
Actually he is , I actually got a SUICIDAL hat from the previous guitar player ... lol ...
Hell ya !!!

Thank you!
Calculating Infiniti is STILL bonkers

Cool ass dude, he came into a shat band practice he's good friends with Jeff Wood of shat who also happened to play bass with dillinger, I was playing drums for shat at the time and wasnt sure what to expect, HUMBLE COOL GUY..then i found out he was one of the original diaper wearing members of shat in its infancy...( Get it diapers, infancy)
Timeless masterpiece
jeeeez
Tecnical know how and classical training !! Cops and sheeps !!
amazing, Ben thinks the self titled was 'not original' fuck me!
" it was me and our....A drummer".
Why can't he just acknowledge Chris ?
He spends quite a bit of time in this interview talking about Chris though?
I think it's less about not acknowledging him, more about the catching himself saying 'our drummer' when he's not the current drummer
No he’s a dipshit he’s leaving Ben benoit out of it too. Dude wants to make the whole band history just him.
Bro lying benoit wrote some of that album. Dude is so weird, cut the rockstar shit
These fools stayed at my crib back in 2000 in Baltimore MD.. Holla
