Ben Weinman: The best Evertune spokesman that Evertune doesn't pay.
I appreciate the fact that it's Ben Weinman talking about Ben Weinman's guitar rig, not Ben Weinman's guitar tech talking about Ben Weinman's guitar rig.
YEP. Most metal musicians are like this.
Holy shit wireless built into the guitar is genius...
Hunter, AFI's bassist also does that
My 67 year old dad is a huge guitar player and was fascinated by this rig rundown - it’s nice when you can bond with your dad about TDEP stuff 💯
Glad you cherished that.
This interviewer knows his shit. Seems like he does a decent amount of listening and research before he interviews. Wish there was more of this
If only he could pronounce "escape" properly.
He's easily one of the best on here. Seems like a real fan when talking to a lot of these guys.
The built-in wireless is a freaking amazing idea.
That was Ben, man is a genius.
One of the best and most innovative sig guitar ideas I've seen in a long time. Nowadays sig guitars are just the standard models with some dudes name on it. This guy is doing it right.
Where is the Liam Wilson Rig Rundown godammit?????!?????
He has such killer bass tone
Chris Kies kicks ass. He's not only a DEP fan, but he's a smart fan asking smart questions. Thanks Chris!
I just received one of his signatures for my birthday. Probably that best value and the most versatile guitar I've ever played or owned.
I really like how he actually explained why he likes the evertune and not just say its the best you know?
Really like this interviewer
this guy is a legend.
too bad his band is discorded and sounds like shit
LOL
yeah they don't know how to play shit. the discordance is because they don't know how to play. it's not intentional or anything. they don't want to sound like that.
+ James Dunham Actually they are pretty talented and the dissonance in their sound is very much intentional. They are from the same area of VA I'm from (Same area of South Eastern VA but different city nearby my hometown. We lived about 20 or 30 minutes drive from each other if you took 264 East). When I used to do concert sound for a living we did their sound quite a bit and I know these guys pretty well. Trust me, they are good on their instruments, I've sat in on a few of their early practice sessions. They seem to like to cram as many notes as they can into each measure. Their sound is a combination of that and just not giving a shit really.
Haha dude I was just being sarcastic. Trust me, I'm totally with you. I've seen Dillinger twice, and I hope to one day be half the guitartist Ben is.
This is probably the best rig rundown so far. Ben is a great interview.
bet he doesnt plan on smashing that one anytime soon
Deafheaven rig rundown?
Literally the opposite of this one, but yes that's a good one to do for sure.
Waluigi knows his gear
I have the same fuzz pedal. It's a great pedal
I have always dug minimalism. I enjoy stripping music down to as bare bones as possible. Sometimes you can go too far and lose a lot, sometimes you hear something in your head that you just know will add a lot, but typically, I thrive with limitations. Simplicity is typically the best approach for song writing. Never make the mistake of confusing bells and whistles for substance, and everything you add shrinks everything else a little bit to make room in the sonic soundscape. Without a strong basis, you end up decorating shit.
You ever listen to the band Swans?
Eli Shifrin no, but I'll give them a listen if it's somehow relevant.
dreaminginnoother Yea, you sound like you'd like them. Don't dismiss them straight away though, they may take a while to click with you.
Adrian Steele oops, dismissed them right away. I'm a ADD ridden internet age dude, that's why I listen to dep in the first palce. I don't have time to wait for you to play another chord, much less one that doesn't seem to lead anywhere. To each their own, but how do you get from swans to dillinger?
Haha I can see what you mean. Yea I just try to immerse myself in as much music as possible so my tastes tend to be quite eclectic
Awesome band. Just recently got into them with the latest album. Really blown away.
i love guitars and muscly men who play the geetar, that gets my hole moiiiiiiist
Jesus, dude.
lol seriously though
What if you just kept that for yourself...
"I've been going for simplicity these days" I had no clue simplicity was in Ben Weinman's vocabulary...
It's in his vocab. Just not his hands.
"My mid-range goes to 11"
I'd buy that guitar so quick.
If you're interested, here are some more "mid-range" songs by The Dillinger Escape Plan you might enjoy; Paranoia Shields, Widower, Nothing's Funny, Gold Teeth On a Bum, Parasitic Twins, Black Bubblegum, Unretrofied, Dead As History, Milk Lizard, Mouth of Ghosts, Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants etc. Personally, I think Greg Puciato does great harsh and clean vocals. He doesn't sound like any other "core" vocalist out there and his stage presence is second to none. Tell me how you get on!
I agree, far better than when the sound guy just talks you through it. Those are interesting too, but like you said it's better when the actual star knows their gear.
Actually just Ben Weinman himself is such a thoughtful musician.
Agreed, a lot of guitarists in extremely successful bands couldn't tell you jack shit about their rig because the guitar tech just takes care of it for them.
he knows his shit. and he used to grind.
grind?
guitarfreek1 Either the genre or skateboarding :P
go home truss rod cover you are drunk
I probably watched most of these rig rundowns and every time the artist does the rig rundown them selves, I have big respect. Just shows that they still love what they do and love to talk about guitars. Ben here seems like he'd like to go on for hours just for the love of it. Great stuff!
Mathcore teaches you things
Dillinger Escape Plan steppin on faces lol
Metal guitarist with an F-hole. Interesting. Only in progressive metal :)P
Devin Townsend? Plays a hollowbody Framus with EMG's in it.
Atif Azim I'd have said Devin Townsend, but not all his music is really metal. He is a virtuostic player, having something like that doesent even suprise me.
In a band like this, much heavier than anything Devy has done, you can't help but say "That is different." Whereas with Devy, its pretty much a given
@@mikescanlan4653 obviously you never listened to Miss Machine or Ire Works then hahaha
A Vintage 30 is not a 30 watt speaker. It's 60 watts.
I've been trying to load this video since 4:00 pm. its not 8:19 and still going. FML
I want them to do a rig rundown for opeth, thatd be cool.
The bridge on his guitar is ingenious... a must-have for those of us that play
aggressively! Ben's set-up is amazingly straightforward for the versatility he
requires. His comments on the tonal space his guitar occupies should be a
reminder to all of us that the guitar really is a midrange instrument. One question though... how does he deal with feedback issues playing a semi-hollowbody
guitar with that much distortion? You rock Ben!
He has a Boss Noise Suppressor
guitarfreek1 I have this pedal as well and it is amazing at keeping feedback at bay... I sometimes see what it's like w/o it and immediately turn it back on.
Thanks for the info guitarfreek1!
noise gates are good, but emgs also are very low noise I feel like that has an effect
Ben's one of my heroes. The other is Tosin Abasi.
His 12th fret says party crasher. Legend.
Jake Haslam party smasher*
TheDrumEquation for someone who's read Rant I'm surprised I got that wrong haha
haha happens to the best of us
1st reply in 5 years
@@drperkyreal4686 ok
19:01 Hi Billy =)
This is just about my favorite music-related youtube series. It's what all those guitar magazines were always missing...the stuff guitar geeks and music nuts really want to know. That said, there's no "x" in Escape.
"Theres Something that makes it work with physics and nature". best description of an evertune in history
diggin' that Bowie shirt
Evertune is fucking sick but rattles too much especially you got microphonic pick ups at all you'll here it but give a option you can have a hipshot bridge and no wireless for cheaper 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
WE NEED A NICK SADLER RIG RUNDOWN
Um I am a 15 year old boy who likes hardcore punk and another wide variety of music, but prefer music in the same vein as rock n roll.
"...and i also add distortion with this one pickle..." What??
+Felix Nilbog "swollen pickle"...
Swollen Pickle, it's the name of the fuzz pedal he uses!
Felix Nilbog I have that pedal and it's insane and perfect for Dillinger stuff
Anyone know what brand of strap he's using? Looks comfy as hell
Awesome f-hole guitar. Guys check out my new tune "The Scalper"
Damn dude that guitar is golden..
what he made with that guitar is BRILLIANT !!!!
Amazing interview man! Such good research and good questions and good dialogue
Much appreciated!
Ben weinman is one of my favourite guitarist but damn that is one ugly fucking guitar haha.
Mark V in the background!
listen to the bridge part of the song "one of us is the killer". the first powerchord must be a D.
You can still play a low D with E standard.. do some theory.
@@jeremyrafuse5330 i was talking about D2 you moron. D2 as in Drop D tuning or D standard
I would love to see/hear a RR on Zakk and Rex with Pantera. I may be alone on that island.
What pickups aren't reliable everywhere in the world? Only EMGs? -.-
Is the CAE wah available ONLY as a custom order? I know the custom in the nam is in the name of the company, but is there a commercially available CAE Wah?
There is a Dunlop/CAE wah commercially available. The one Ben is using is the Dimebag Darrell signature wah. Different model.
That guitar is amazing!
LMAO his dig about the singer of As I Lay Dying being the killer.... holy fuck that was funny. I remember I saw ASLD in Kansas City like right before he was arrested
Something about hearing him say the Phrase" Computers and presets made my Anxiety Kick up 🤒 some times you just want to plug in and Play your Heart out....not figure out how a Million things Work
Any idea what brand/model that wireless was?
@19:50 See: Falling in Reverse 🤣
I love how he talks about the mid-scoop zeitgeist of the 90's/00's while it seems like the time since this interview has seen a resurgence of midrange focus in metal.
DEP weren't even ahead of their time, they just knew what peeps would come back around to sooner or later :)
I ran into Greg a while ago and he mentioned that Ben had his wireless inside the guitar, I thought that was genius. Especially after seeing them live it makes sense, they are insane on stage. There is a video of Jeff when he was in the band jumping off stage and kicking me in the face... GREAT NIGHT! haha
Dang, first time I've seen that bridge. Pretty cool.
I wish more guitarists were so thorough. Many of the guitarists on these rundowns seem too cool or lazy to actually demonstrate their rig. Ben is a total guitar legend and one the few people out there trying to do something unique.
Anyone have an idea of what brand /model name of wireless that is?
I don't even like this band, but holy shit that's a fucking badass setup and guitar!! Basically my dream rig!
Mike Patton from Faith No More did an EP with The Dillinger Escape Plan over 10 years ago. If you want to hear a song of theirs influenced by FNM in general then give One Of Us Is the Killer a whirl. The music video is up on RUclips. Don't worry about not understanding *most* of their music; screaming vocals, dissonant, crazy guitar sections and maniacal drums in ludicrous changing time signatures certainly aren't for everyone.
To any common passive pickups there is so much that can happen: wax melting(when it's hot), wire tearing(when it's cold), metals oxidizing(when it's moist). These are physical problems which affect the tone or lead to failure. The active EMGs(or other enclosed active pickups) won't suffer any of these and additionally eliminate most electromagnetic interference as well as tone-loss through cable length. They are indeed a lot more reliable then almost all other passive pickups.
Ok, possibly the best thought out guitar ever, semi hollows sustain forever with the right gain and if you play at reasonable stage volume they do not feed back unless you take your hand off and let it or point the f hole right at your speaker. Awesome guitar! Love it.
999 likes.....Not sure what to do.
+RavionUltimate Are you the 999th like? If not...take that bold and heroic step...round it up big boy and make it a 1000 :P
+RavionUltimate im the 1000th like lol
That you are.... that you are... KNEEL AND BEHOLD!!!
YEEEESSSSSS!!!!!
Oh, I know which part you mean. No, it's just the way it's written. That's still E Standard. I'm not a theory guy, so all I can say is that it's probably because it's so dark sounding, as he's just grouping a lot of low power chords in that part..
The graphic EQ is foot switchable for his scooped metal sound. 10:08
It sounds like Caralho Voador from FNM King for a Day Fool for a Lifetime but, without the tonal qualities of Paton, that said tjough its a lot better than their screaming stuff!
the mans speaking from experience. have you played as many shows, travelled the world, had your guitar on countless different stages under many different conditions?
fwkin awesome piece of video! Wein~ knows his shit and the guitar is pure top, he just sold a piece ...
Actually, contrary to what he says, most metal bands are using a lot of mids now. It was in the 80s when everyone tried to scoop.
The Adam Sandler of metal.
I think this guy had just started a new revolution in wireless technology for guitarists. Seriously, that's some fine ass engineering creativity! I'll be looking forward to it :)
Best ideas ever! This is what I want! How cool is that? The evertune is cool. I want, I want, I want!
Yeah and all the gear we will see is ESP's and Peavey 6505+ going into Mesa cabs. Which sometimes aren't even real or plugged in...
great innovation first I heard of this kind of auto tune type thing this one is not like the guitar that tunes itself by electrically turning the keys
normally I just want to see what kind of pedals these guys are using, but damn everything here is awesome! this has been the most interesting Rig Rundown to me
There is nothing hideous about it
Rawk stars need benzos too
Premier guitar!! You should do a rig rundown with nine inch nails when they your this year!! Would be awesome to see robin fink & trents stage set up!!
he knows what he's talkin about! gay hat tho..
An inventige guitar player with an inventive guitar :0 even the small things like the magnatized electronics cover
PG should go to Warped Tour, and get some of the bands on there and see what gear they are using.
I've been thinking of putting a wireless inbody for a long time.. glad someone can actually do it
i'm pretty sure he used D standard or Drop D on One of us is the killer, at least on the song.
it's a metal washer screwed "permanently" into guitar. probably because this is a road guitar
hey it's better than pop
Love that enclosed speaker. Love this guy doing it his way
Great Video Guys
Never listened to this band before but I do like how he very honest about how gear sounds etc. It doesn't happen as much these days.
У него что Хой на майке?! (no need to write it in english, too much shit to explain)
