This is a channel I stumbled upon today after your video "How At The Drive-in Changed Post-Hardcore". I did not know how BAD I NEEDED THIS CONTENT. LEGEND!
This is such a dope video man. loved the part about how your friend showed you The Mars Volta and ATDI during your trip to Spain. love those kinds of stories.
I experienced TMV as they came out immediately. Saw them multiple times from San Francisco to Santa Cruz. With each album release I followed them and was obsessed with them for their entire run. I love listening to people learn about them.
Same here. I first saw them in New Orleans before I moved to SF. Favorite show was Berkeley Greek Theater followed by their epic NYE show at Bill Graham.
Yes! My younger brothers put me onto this in like 2008. We were driving around Salt Lake City and on first listen I said what the fuck is this amazing shit? Listened to it nonstop for years.
They opened for the chili peppers during the stadium Arcadium tour and I was really feeling them, but all of a sudden people in the crowd started throwing shit at them. Chairs, bottles etc. Shortly after I was digging into their music. I guess the crowd wasn’t ready for a 45 minute epic
Only known them a few years but I was in my back garden, sat on the swing chair after smoking a joint. The first thing of theirs I heard was Frances the Mute, and i remember the first track starting really quietly so I turned it up and then the song actually kicked in, it gave me a heart attack but a good heart attack :D
Deloused was playing in a record store when I walked in. I listened for maybe 40 seconds, went up to the guy working and asked who it was, he told me, I told him I needed this album.
Also, your Spanish pronunciation is EXCELLENT. The only tip: The song: Tírame a las arañas. Remember to pronounce the Ñ as the GN in lasagna. (My business is languages =))
This is probably your best video up to date dude! It's great to hear people geeking out on the Mars Volta but also to go into the details of their instrumentation, harmonies, and what the band represents for you personally, keep up the good work!
I was in high school when De-loused came out, and it was a mind opener. That album and the first Fall of Troy album that came out the same year changed the way I look at music.
In 2004, four of us bought tickets to see A Perfect Circle play in Indianapolis. None of us listened to At the Drive-In, and we had no idea who this opening band was, The Mars Volta. I went out and bought De-Loused, listened to it as much as I could in the few weeks before the show. It didn't come across as a very accessable album. I tried to get my friends who were going to the show with me to listen, but they couldn't get into it. Honestly, I couldn't either, but I kept playing it anyway. At the show, it felt like The Mars Volta played for over an hour, even though they only played two songs! Bits of haunting melodies drifted to me, but I only half-recognized them...it was like I had heard them in a dream. Omar & Cedric thrashed & staggered around the stage, and the lights project their 20ft shadows all around the coliseum. Later I would grow to LOVE De-Loused in the Comatorium... though I couldn't get myself to appreciate Frances the Mute, and I didn't buy any of their other albums.
Mars volta was one of the best bands that it's possible to be. So unapologetically themselves from day one until they "broke up". It always saddens me that some of my favorite stuff by them gets hated on by a lot of fans, like this band really was always coming out of left field with something as unpredictable and challenging as possible and I love how much their music has changed my view of music.
I remember hearing the first few guitar notes/chords and vocals from a track on their first album and instantly had to know who it was and where could I get some more - I think I was sitting at one of the only bars I frequented back in Edmonton . . . the next day I sought out and purchased the CD and was _not_ disappointed . . . all killer - no filler, as the saying used to go.
love this band so much, love the cover, and love the video!! as others have said, the editing here is spot-on. i loved that little Orson Welles clip/transition
I remember me and this one other guy were the only ones who listened to tmv and qe ended up caching them in Irvine and then in San Diego for bedlam tour. Best shows I ever went to, this banned opened my mind and helped me find other bands / music I would of never have come across if it wasn't for them
That's so cool! I would die to see them play the Bedlam live. that's my favorite TMV album. Thanks for sharing. And btw out of curiosity, what other bands did you get introduced to through TMV?
@@LieLikesMusic The bedlam show was amazing I still have the CD and ticket stub from it because they played on my birthday. The opened with a improv tune and then they worked it into roulette and Cedric just dashed onto the stage it, ill never forget it. To name a few fugazi, glassjaw/ head automatica, mastodon, fall of Troy, germs, bad brains, the album angel dust by faith no more, des roc, modest mouse, pomegranates, moving units and others
I was graduating high school in 2003 and I kept reading about this album on a radiohead message board. Thread after thread users were gushing about de-loused. I couldn’t get the weird name out of my head, and I went to my local department store back when they had a good cd selection and was happy when I picked up the only copy. I played it over and over and it defined my summer.
Yes! Exactly! THAT is why they're SO incredible... They are the product of what musicians are capable of, when they do absolutely EVERY thing they possibly can to push themselves to be the best
I first heard Deloused in 2003. I went into the record store and it was on sale. I saw an interview on Much Music in Canada with Flea and Anthony Kedis and they said check out the band The Mars Volta so i bought it on a whim. I was high as a kite and I put it in my discman and I was immediately blown away. I had to take my headphones off several times because it overloaded my senses and I needed a break. It was earth shattering to me. I couldn't believe you could make music that good and convince a record company to sell it. I have been a fan since.
Bro, great video! Great band! I saw them open for System of a Down a few years back. Cedric completely upstaged Serj. SOAD looked like a bunch of old men on stage after watching TMV play and hour set. Cedric whip kicking the shit out of the microphone over and over again will be forever burnt into my memory.
That's what i hear people say haha. They just left the audience blasted like an atomic bomb test field. It's so fun when artists actually have fun and go wild on stage.
I heard DeLoused and Frances at my surprise birthday party in late 2005. They were a gift from the East L.A. Mexican guitar player of my former band was disappointed I didn't already know who they were. I hadn't seen him for a couple of years, and we were very eclectic ourselves, I listened non-stop for days.
haha i felt so old when you said you were introduced to De-Loused in 2012 LOL .. back in 2003 (Xmas season if i recall) i remember the oldest sibling of my bf gave me this album to listen for the weekend =`)
Seen them open for Red Hot Chili Peppers. I had no idea who they were until I seen them perform, as you can imagine my mind was blown. I was mesmerized.
Fell in love with TMV back in high school, I think it was 2003-2004...thanks completely to an old XM radio channel called XM music lab.. it was like half prog rock, half jam bands. I heard TMV, coheed and several other bands in their early years on that channel!
Dude, your channel has come a long way. I remember watching your videos a few years ago before you put yourself on camera. Mars Volta are probably my favorite band. You did an excellent job with this. Thanks for putting it together. I had no idea you actually played music...I thought you were just a fan/video producer. You have a ton of talent.
I can guarantee I had concertina on tape in 1999/2000 so 2001 can't be right.. my friend bought it after seeing them live..I would listen to it on the way to school junior year and I graduated 01'.. love the video thx!
Wow I wish I could afford that, atm I can't get the box set, but holy shit this music defined my teen years. I still remember my pot head cousin came over for Christmas Eve and he wad showing me all sorts of heavy metal bands. At the time I was losing interest in heavy metal and was getting into stuff like mgmt, but then he pops in Frances the mute and skips to Cassandra Gemini. I was blown away, like speechless and just had the goofiest smile on my face. This was the type of music I had been looking for and learned it was called prog rock. Great video man, I love learning about this band.
My left arm has 9 tattoos dedicated to the Mars Volta, Omar, and Cedric. They are the reason I have a music career. If I’d ever be gay... well it would be for these guys haha pure talent
When I discovered At-the Drive In around ‘02 I was obsessed. I said to my friend let’s go see them and he said they broke up, but formed a new band. I searched for this mysterious new band and it wasn’t till Deloused in the Comatorium dropped that I had heard anything. I wasn’t able to find Tremulant on vinyl but when LimeWire came around I finally was able to hear it. Dood that box set looks amazing. I’m still waiting for mine to show up.
Oh yeah. I heard he was recommended Jon Theodore from basically all of his musician friends. Theo is a beast with Qotsa too. TMV and Qotsa are among my top 5 bands of all time i think.
I wasn't aware of Jon being also the drummer of Mini Mansions. Man I was so happy when I met him in Germany two years ago on a MM gig in a small bar in Cologne. Such a great guy. And Mikey too, of course, haha.
I was in my early 20s here in west texas when de loused came out and man that album meant so much to us. it was the sound track to us smoking weed and drinking beer at the lake after work. we didn't have a lot to do other than play and listen to music. their music hits my soul in a way almost nobody else does
This album was and is so significant to me and deep in my memory. It came out the summer after i turned 18 and I was homeless and drifting in and out of Covenant House (youth shelter). So much dozing off on the train to this album. Played it until the batteries would die in my walkman lol
Also looking back now at this cover makes me think of when margaret (log lady) says "my log is turning gold" in some of her last lines from twin peaks: the return
I don't even know how I even heard of Deloused. I remember hearing one track playing at a show and then I found the album at a record store and instantly made the connection. I don't know how I made the connection though. I knew I liked it it's one of my most favorite albums of all time
Dude i dont see how anyone covered that song....and you two did a stellar job no joke.. I miss those first two volta albums ....the story behind deloused is wild and what its supposed to represent is deep the battle between their friends good and bad side of his conscience during a coma and the friend coming out of the coma at the end of the album realizing that he wanted to die anyway....wow
I got very lucky when a friend showed me De-loused just a year after it came out, and by the time I'd digested thoroughly, Frances the Mute came out and I was hooked for life

I have a special place in my heart for not only the band but Deloused In the Comatorium in particular. I was also turned into TMV, ATDI (and Sparta) by a friend while in High School back in 2002. I don’t think Deloused had even been released at this time with The Tremulant EP being the only commercially available recording of their music at the time. I appreciated your story of being introduced to the band. The trip that you were experiencing at the time sounded profound and like an ideal backdrop while digesting the multidimensional music for the first time. Also great highlights of certain musics parts. Omar’s guitar parts are why I picked the instrument back up circa 2012 and dove head first into effects pedals.
I remember in 2003 i had friends that I partied with every weekend that had a garage rock band. one night at show of theirs a friend of a friend was handing out copies of deloused. My friends hated it and talked a lot of shit about it, but I absolutely loved it. It changed my entire taste in music at 17 years old and got me started on decades long prog rock, indie, hardcore journey.
Nice video! I like your cover of Roulette Dares, interesting story about the cymbal stack. I saw them live at the end of last year and I'm excited to see them again next year! Deloused is still my favorite Volta album. I remember playing Halo 2 in my older brother's room while he would blast that album.
I started out liking frances the mute more. I actually really liked all the ambient parts but over time I found myself listening to deloused far more. Imo deloused is a more digestible , better structured, and smoother album. There's an element of restraint there which isn't present on frances the mute and I think this makes deloused a better album
@@MyoticTesseract Yeah, to me Deloused is the more perfect album, but Frances is the more ambitious, and its higher highs esp on Cygnus and Cassandra make me love it more.

I didn't get the box set but just grabbed Frances the Mute reissue. So stoked. I left my original copy in my car overnight by accident and it warped to unfixable levels. I've been holding onto that warped vinyl for 10+ years waiting for a reissue.
@@bobunitone Daaaamn, where did you go to school? The top of Mount Everest??
This is a channel I stumbled upon today after your video "How At The Drive-in Changed Post-Hardcore". I did not know how BAD I NEEDED THIS CONTENT. LEGEND!
Hey thanks for watching. As you can tell i'm a big fan of ATDI and TMV too.
This is such a dope video man. loved the part about how your friend showed you The Mars Volta and ATDI during your trip to Spain. love those kinds of stories.
Great video man! The Mars Volta is a really criminally underrated band, this video really does the band good!
You said it. Thanks for taking the time to watch. And for being a fellow Dream Theater and RHCP fan too. Great musical taste!
Props for getting that box set, such an awesome product.
Thank you so much for this video THE most underrated band of all time no argument
That is one beautiful box set, and a hella informative video. Very happy to see you posting again!
I feel anyone's who heard them for the first time can remember where they were at the time .
Yes! My younger brothers put me onto this in like 2008. We were driving around Salt Lake City and on first listen I said what the fuck is this amazing shit? Listened to it nonstop for years.
Most definitely! Def remember
@@ryankelly3743 yeah they went through that alot ! Either u hated them or fell in love with them if u caught them opening for a major band
Same here… hooked since🤘🏾💯
Another brilliant video! Great to see this level of detail about my favorite band. Thank you!
Also, your Spanish pronunciation is EXCELLENT. The only tip: The song: Tírame a las arañas. Remember to pronounce the Ñ as the GN in lasagna. (My business is languages =))
You are getting better and better with the edition and creativity of your videos. Kudos for you!
More! More! More! PLEASE, NEVER EVER stop making videos about Volta!
They're one of my all time favorite bands. So i'll most likely make more videos about them at some point yes ;)
Thanks for such an amazing video! I love TMV so much, and your content is always so good!
Awesome transitions btw, I loved this whole video.
This is probably your best video up to date dude! It's great to hear people geeking out on the Mars Volta but also to go into the details of their instrumentation, harmonies, and what the band represents for you personally, keep up the good work!
Hey that means a lot to me! Thanks for the encouraging words. I'll never get tired of talking about TMV. They're such a timeless band.
Mars Volta = King Crimson + Santana (if you haven’t heard early Santana, keep scrolling)
I've recently become a fan of the band, particularly their first 4 albums, so this video has come at the perfect time, great job!
Great! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Consider checking out their later albums too. They're all good. Noctourniquet is my favorite from their later period.
Love this band's music with all my heart. Thank you for the video.
Same here. And no problem. Thank you for making a great video on Hotline Miami's soundtrack.
I remember hearing the first few guitar notes/chords and vocals from a track on their first album and instantly had to know who it was and where could I get some more - I think I was sitting at one of the only bars I frequented back in Edmonton . . . the next day I sought out and purchased the CD and was _not_ disappointed . . . all killer - no filler, as the saying used to go.
very impressive video ! one of my favorite bands since early 2000s. well done!
love this band so much, love the cover, and love the video!! as others have said, the editing here is spot-on. i loved that little Orson Welles clip/transition
@@LieLikesMusic
The bedlam show was amazing I still have the CD and ticket stub from it because they played on my birthday.
The next volume of this is long overdue, can’t wait!
"...The Bedlam in Goliath, their best album," YES!
Great! You’re officially a man of culture
I was lucky to have seen them perform during Deloused.. absolutely incredible live. If only I could be lucky enough to afford Deloused on vinyl..
Not sure if you are referring to og copy or repress. The cloud hills repress is in preorder and around 50 euros.
Yes! Exactly! THAT is why they're SO incredible... They are the product of what musicians are capable of, when they do absolutely EVERY thing they possibly can to push themselves to be the best
idk if it's the best, but Noctourniquet is my favourite album, it's beautiful
Yes i like that album a lot too! It's not my favorite, but it's amazing from start to finish. I wish more fans could enjoy it.
I have never heard of this band. I will binge over the weekend.
Blake flemming is a professor at the college I went to, great guy and amazing drummer!
Bro I love the Mars Volta and you have a ton of great info in here! Great job 👍 I'm also going to go buy some furniture!
I really like the form of the new videos. Just as informative, but also more entertaining. thanks!
Thanks :) I'm glad you think so.
Literally discovered this at the end of my spring break when my dad showed me this band I love their music
The transition at 09:30, whaaaat! Loved this video too Christian, very entertaining and informative at the same time
Bro, great video!
Just got to see them live in El Paso this past Sunday after all these years !!! One of the best shows I've ever been to !. Effen dOpe !
haha i felt so old when you said you were introduced to De-Loused in 2012 LOL .. back in 2003 (Xmas season if i recall) i remember the oldest sibling of my bf gave me this album to listen for the weekend =`)
Seen them open for Red Hot Chili Peppers. I had no idea who they were until I seen them perform, as you can imagine my mind was blown. I was mesmerized.
Yes that's their thing. Too bad they don't perform anymore. But i guess we can always cross our fingers.
Saw rhen open for a perfect circle in 03 or 04. Didn't know who they were. Mind fucking blown.
@@akashicfibers8205 Wow what an interesting combo. Both are amazing bands!
You have a ton of talent.
awesome video. frances the mute is the most perfect album I've ever heard. deloused and bedlam are incredible too
Thanks. There’s something special to all of them i think. Have a great day
Going to see these guys Sunday can't wait
I can guarantee I had concertina on tape in 1999/2000 so 2001 can't be right.. my friend bought it after seeing them live..I would listen to it on the way to school junior year and I graduated 01'.. love the video thx!
Very nice video. Production is getting better. Keep it up. Thank you
The mars volta changed my life. Inspired me to make a band and do so much wild shit for 10 years. RIP Disfrutalo! Thank you Mars Volta.
Thank you for putting this together. loved it. very informative.
No worries. I'm happy you liked it man.
I really liked this video. I've been a fan of this band since high school. Their music is really good. Deloused in the Comatorium is a great record.
one of my favorite bands
Same here man.
Same here man.
I feel like this new album is completely embracing their Latin roots with these songs and music videos. 🙏 can't wait for the full album
It's my intention to listen to them since a long time...my interest rose when Josh Homme integrated the drummer to the queens.
Understanding The Mars Volta : The curly years
I was in my early 20s here in west texas when de loused came out and man that album meant so much to us. it was the sound track to us smoking weed and drinking beer at the lake after work. we didn't have a lot to do other than play and listen to music. their music hits my soul in a way almost nobody else does
Both album covers were available here in Australia for De loused
Amazing work as always
I knew I liked it
it's one of my most favorite albums of all time
Dude i dont see how anyone covered that song....and you two did a stellar job no joke.. I miss those first two volta albums ....the story behind deloused is wild and what its supposed to represent is deep the battle between their friends good and bad side of his conscience during a coma and the friend coming out of the coma at the end of the album realizing that he wanted to die anyway....wow
Great video man! Love MV.
I got very lucky when a friend showed me De-loused just a year after it came out, and by the time I'd digested thoroughly, Frances the Mute came out and I was hooked for life
Tucson is pronounced “too-sahn” just for future reference. Another confusing word from America, lol. Great video, love this band
hey man, I've watching your stuff for quite some time and although there were times were I wasn't that pleased with the direction you were going edit-wise and artistically, I do appreciate the work you put into your videos lately and this one has to be the best of your channel so far :) really interesting and really got me into checking out TMV :) keep it up!
Hey thanks for the kind words. That means a lot! I've been spending a lot more time trying to improve the content lately. And i think it shows, like you said. Also cool album in the profile pic there. Origin of Symmetry is one of the better Muse albums i think.
@@LieLikesMusic yeah you seem to be more comfortable in presenting the videos now then when you weren't presenting with the cam on :) and it's interesting to read that you improvise more, as I thought you really grew on the structure of the videos aswell, which apperas to be well thought :)
And thanks! Without OOS, I guess, I wouldn't come to enjoy something like TMV. I really enjoy Absolution and Black Holes aswell, while I hate what the band has become after that
All of their albums are great but Bedlam In Goliath is my favorite as well.
Cedric isn't from Puerto Rico, nor does he have ancestors from there. He has mixed ancestry that is european from his father's side (German, I think) and Mexican on his mother's side.
Omar is the one with puertorican ancestry, also the one with the puertorican flag on his amp.
Fantastic video! Theodore is hugely underrated, even just for his work for RTX and TMV.
Thanks. Well at least he's highly regarded amongst musicians. Otherwise he wouldn't get the job with Qotsa.
11:10 i listened to this album so many times, but when I went through my set of realidad de la suenos the day it arrived, looking at the artwork it was the first time I realized theres someone standing in the back of the room on this picture
One of My all time favorite bands
Same here!
Man that vinyl collection sold out quick. I'm so pissed I missed out on it...but I hope they see they have millions of fans still waiting for them to return
In case you don't know, now their shop Clouds Hill is doing pretty orders for individual releases on vinyl now ✌
@@dustbent7056 I did not know that I had like tunnel vision for that deluxe set but I'll buy some individually. I have 2 of their live shows on vinyls but no record albums
13:31 ooh! you could make a video all about this man. He produced so many great albums!
I love de loused and frances the mute, I seen the mars volta in concert in Atlanta @ the tabernacle in 2005, and then in Asheville in 2008. I actually got a drum stick at the 2008 show. There awsome live....
Ugh, you got the boxset, I want it too!
4:47 That original version of Cicatriz with the completely different chorus, jam at the end & overall slower tempo? I believe was actually originally titled: "State your preference'"...
That's awesome. I still haven't seen them live. But i've got my hopes up it's possible now that they're back together again. Thanks for watching :)
Thanks for the video, I'm going to see them live in October and I've only ever known their debut album. Now I'm a more well equipped fan!
I started out liking frances the mute more. I actually really liked all the ambient parts but over time I found myself listening to deloused far more. Imo deloused is a more digestible , better structured, and smoother album. There's an element of restraint there which isn't present on frances the mute and I think this makes deloused a better album
And personally that’s why I’m more drawn to Frances, because i love how all out they go on that album.
@@MyoticTesseract Yeah, to me Deloused is the more perfect album, but Frances is the more ambitious, and its higher highs esp on Cygnus and Cassandra make me love it more.
Saw them in Portland twice with RHCP and SOD tours. Berkeley and SF New Years Eve show. Also saw Omar with Ximena Sariñana Rivera in SF. Don’t sleep on Omar’s solo work. Victimas Del Cielo is a fantastic track.
Great video and album! 😊👌🏻
