Even tho I thought my 22hp intek vtwin Briggs was running like a champ, this year getting it ready for spring found out it needed some help. The smoke from the diptube sure helped decide on doing the head gaskets after I had already done valve clearence adjustments a bit earlier. Thank you for your awesome videos. I’m now 1/3 into a tear down and changing out most gaskets including sump gasket(bought the whole gasket set due to oil build up everywhere) and with be servicing and lapping the valves due to a lot of build up on the valve side of the heads. With one exhaust valve not sealing properly and spinning with your thumb trick. Still deciding on if I want to crack open the carb for cleaning. It always ran fine. Keep up the outstanding work.
I have a Roger Miller album from 1964, one year younger than myself. The record's in better shape then I am! On the cover it says "featuring dang me, and the new hit chug-a-lug" Good stuff from the past. Thanks to you and Taryl for reminding me about it!
a good bit of knowledge there Taryl mate and cheers from Australia 🐨🐑🦘🌴🌏 to your area and yep a good difference in the two gasket related topics and yep even a Victa 2 stroke aka 2 cycle with the P/T (Power Torque) engines can have something very similar too etc.
externally blown: black smoke out of muffler (burned oil goes past head gasket during exhaust cycle)...oil consumption...oil gets very black. Spark plugs also gets very black. loss of crank case pressure and vacuum. weak fuel pressure often misdiagnosed a fuel delivery or carb problem. internally blown: during ignition cycle, combusted gasses blow past gaskets directly into crank case, causing over pressure and oil into fuel pump...usually develops a small oil consumption. surging and engine performance problems...if not fixed will lead to overheat due to oil very hot and loss of viscosity, premature ring and cylinder and piston and cylinder bore wear. Sparks plugs will also be very black and sooty from improper and incomplete combustion. a compression test AND leakdown test will diagnose this problem.
Don’t forget Taryl has a wonderful video replacing Kohler head gaskets. Not only the master advice but you get to see Taryl consult the crystal ball to gain knowledge of the thing that connects to the thing down by the thing😂
Replace left head gasket on my Kohler 24hp at 110 hours. Thought it was just a fluke, so I only replaced the one side. At 130 hours the right gasket blew. Junk! Why would you make a head gasket without a flame ring around the cylinder hole!
You can hook your compression tester hose up and set to top dead center and connect to compressor hose and see if it blows out the exhaust or intake. Fix it all while the heads off
I noticed one of those awful deere stx's back there, with the awful korller command engine. I bet you're replacing either the transaxle or the plastic governor gear.
Thanks I couldn't figure out why my why my mower is losing power under a load I've checked the valve clearances change spark plugs coils and did a carb rebuild while I was changing the blade yesterday I just notice it sounded just like this thanks pal😂
The only good thing about an internally blown head gasket on an air cooled engine is at least you don't have to worry about coolant mixiing with the oil and trashing the engine.
Whats causing the carburetor on a briggs single cylinder engine to blow smoke out of it when you turn the engine off? Valve issue or would a blown head gasket be the problem?
I have a 25hp Kohler twin cylinder doing the same thing. I checked it with a leak down tester and it is loosing a lot of pressure near the exhaust port. It's not coming out of the muffler. Made sure both valves were closed. You can hear and feel the air coming out. Odd thing is the cylinder has 160lbs. of compression.
I had a 30 year old Briggs on a Craftsman 22" deck that ran like that for at least 5 years before I hit a rebar lot pin and trashed it. Guess it was meant to be.
I believe you. There's been some small engine problems I've heard but the people didn't want to find the cause. This gives a go-to and many cylinder heads are easy access and the gaskets aren't expensive. You don't see a lot of failure of head gaskets. So, is it overheating? Or the quality of the gasket? Or expansion/contraction loosens them up?
@@baileyhatfield4273 the first time I get asked to check an engine for hard starting, or no start, or it's been out uncovered in the rain, I have a list. It includes head bolt check. The exhaust side bolts are what's taking the turn on the bolts. The top comes off, the rope pulley gets lube, the ignition gets wire brushed and regapoed to spec, just like the sp. Plug. I think the bigger engines don't receive this maintenance. And that's causing eventual gasket leaks. I was just wondering what this ones bulletins say or what they find on this versus similar engines of other makes. People who can still mow, keep mowing, and things add up to failure eventually. Fluffy sure speeds up the overheat, you're right.
i also see the oil stain on top of the motor from the valve cover that doesn't have an oil fill port...those rubber seals are notorious for going kaput on deere's and you have to replace them with the old leaded gaskets they brought back, after trying to ditch the old faithfuls
Remove the valve covers and start the engine. If it’s blown, you’ll see the oil being blown out by the crankcase over pressure. It’s also been my experience that it will fill the air filter housing with oil in the worst cases, sometimes to the point that engine will choke out and die. If your air filter is covered in oil, you likely have a blown head gasket…….
ya but what your doing doesn't always point to the head gaskets . for example I had one that had a fine crack in the top of the piston and it would run fine until it got hot then it would start smoking and fill the air filter with oil . alot of times by looking at the mower and how it has been taking care of can help with finding problems to .
I realise that almost all the engines being dealt with on this channel are air cooled, but maybe a qualifier should be added that there are additional, different, symptoms, for a failure in a water cooled engine, such as white exhaust smoke, water in the oil, oil quantity increasing or turning grey, bubbles in the radiator, loss of compression, etc. . .
Ok mine doesn't make that noise at all turning off, oil is milky brown colored on a scag freedom z. Absolutely no noticeable loss of power. Went to check oil while it was running amd a small puff of white smoke came out of dipstick tube along with oil mist being sprayed out.

Thanks Taryl, good knowledge and advice. Crazy now days how engines just dont last. I guess they are part of the throw away world. Watch most of your videos, love the humor. Great content.
Ive seen people run them for years like that before it ends up not running anymore due to lack of compression. Its gonna gradually get worse as you run it more, But you can get by with running it like that till you can get it fixed.
I got me a set of them teeth at a laundry mat ears back for $.50. I still have them. I’ll put that in when I go to the airport or somewhere once in a while just to see what people do. It’s comical as hell.

That's for bad valves.
My MTD garden tractor had a blown internal head gasket----it would emit blue-white smoke at times; the spark plug was also badly fouled.

I had this same problem on a courage twin I had. You hear a puffing when it was turning over to start.
Hey Taryl have you ever had to use a copper head gasket? If so is there a proper way to install them?
And smoke signals from the dipstick tube!

Age, easily overheated, ect. All the crap mice like to bury in the air cooled engine covers clogs them up.
