Thanks Elliot. Looks like a great car, but I’m doubting the whole battery swapping thing. I don’t see it becoming something widespread for a single brand. And on the practical side, getting large grid connections on that scale might be a problem for the next couple of years in some countries.
There are countless benefits to battery swap. Not getting out of your car, fully autonomous, and only pushing a button to swap is just one. In the Winter this a big benefit. NIO has agreements with many petrol companies to build out swap stations at existing gas stations. Charging batteries slowly during off-peak hours is less costly and degrades the batteries less. Swapping a faulty battery with no service call is brilliant. Swap reduces total cost of ownership. Able to upgrade or downgrade battery capacity at every swap. No built-in battery technology obsolescence. I could go on...
battery swap aside, NIO evs are still brilliant EVs, with better fit and finishing than Tesla Also battery swap might not suit your country, but it certainly does in China

It's funny how Elliot completely avoids the fact that this is simply a less good copy of a Tesla Model 3 at a much higher cost when you factor in the battery rental. They literally took a Model 3 and copied it note for note. And he praises them for all the things Tesla brought to market in 2017 with the Model 3 that Nio shamelessly copies.
While no expert, the Model 3 didn't have a hatchback as I recall. Finish quality in a Tesla is also part of what I hear back from the handful of Tesla owners I know.
@@connclissmann6514 This car isn't a hatchback.... And yeah, when ya got nothing else, talk about panel gaps (which is a totally overblown nonsense argument since I can find them on ALL makes of cars).
What's really hard to understand is that both the ET5 and the BYD Seal look significantly better than the Tesla Model 3, even though they are all similarly styled. What is Tesla doing? Can't they hire someone who knows how to design beautiful cars? One only has to look at a Tesla model X to realise just how clueless their design department is. I remember when Hyundai couldn't style a car to save their lives, then they hired Luc Donckerwolke and went from some of the ugliest cars on the road to some of the best. I think NIO and BYD are going to do very well. I'd pay more for a Seal or an ET5 than I would a Tesla Model 3. Just make them available in North America. Good review.
If the 75kWh battery gives you 560km range... Why don't they have a 50kWh option? A battery with a bit over 370km range, should be be perfectly sufficient, even for longer journeys.
CLTC range is known to be generous. Multiply by 0.8 for WLTP and once more for EPA range. Nio cars aren't known to be the most efficient out there, but you have battery swap to boot.
with the diminishing returns on adding more and more battery, it may be you would get more than that, but also i feel we need more 20/30/40kwh batteries, without their own weight to drag around they would be much moree efficent. That doesnt make sense but you probably know what i mean.

I think Nio is far too expensive and a company that thinks battery swapping can work -well Elon tried that very bad idea - as Sandy Munro says ‘you never want to have connectors being stressed’ and especially high voltage ones plus others ! Oh it’s just $10800 every 5 years for battery rental !, a reason for the cars worth dropping out of the sky - just imagine the 2nd 5 years Every car beats that !, even ICE costs
The model 3 had a price cut 2 weeks ago in China and is now 229,900 yuan. Which is significantly cheaper than this car! Obviously the model 3 has a smaller battery but is more efficient and has no monthly fees for battery.
One added feature I would like to see is a 220V AC outlet somewhere, say in the trunk, which I could use to power my electric chain saw, welder or even a kettle.
I can't ignore that cake comment. Ever since discovering what hot sauce can do to frosting, I have never gone back. Although, to be fair, I use Louisiana style hot sauce, and only a dash, but the flavor difference is incredible. The slight bit of vinegar and spice bring out a vibrancy in the frosting that is essential. Your saying that hot sauce is too weird for cake is like if I were to say that salt is too weird for food. Otherwise, great video!
Can’t account for tastes. Tesla is not winning any beauty prizes but at least they’re bland. Here the front looks compressed and horrible and the the color looks like it came out of some orifice.
Nice looking car! But... a couple of things. Like almost all Chinese car companies, with the exception of BYD, none are profitable. And while Nio's battery swapping seems neat, it either is going to make it harder to become profitable, or its owners will be paying a monthly fee in perpetuity. If you have a battery-swap scheme, you have several issues. First, you have to manufacture multiple battery packs for each car- so you have a larger capital expenditure. Second, it makes it hard to develop future battery packs without having to build out either larger battery swap stations, or having different versions of it. Third, it is going to make it hard to sell the car, as not everyone is going to want to rent the battery- and how do you do a trade-in for a new car that is not a Nio, with a rented battery? With battery charging times getting less and less, there is just no future need for battery swap stations, especially for just driving around the city, which most drivers do the vast majority of the time. And it is a whole lot cheaper to build charging stations than battery swap stations, even without including the cost of the extra batteries.
Great review, thanks. It'll be a while before battery swapping reaches the smaller island nations off mainland Europe, I imagine. Malta, Cyprus, Ireland, (UK?) will likely never be a priority.
Interesting review. Unfortunately haven't entailed most of its technical specs of the car such as suspension, wheel size, battery type, infotainment system and software etc. I think without that it is very difficult to place this car on the market and compare it or position it above most of the manufacturers...
At least charging speed is important... I agree, too much rambling and too few specs. Almost sounded like a NIO advertisement, the trunk is really tiny on such a big car and without a frunk to compensate not many families would pick this vehicle.
Very focused on aesthetics which is always a personal choice. Mechanical specs are much more useful than a sales pitch about how beautiful it is. PS I think its bloody ugly with the warts on the roof and the back end looks like a large letter box slot, but that's just my opinion.
Color is basically oxidized yellow, exactly like an old bright yellow pickup truck I had decades ago that faded in the sun to a powdery washed out yellow.
I'm all aboard the EV-hype train and yet nothing about this car or its pricing appealed to me. Battery swapping is not the selling point motor-journalists seem to think it is.
I find it really weird that battery swapping isn't a thing in "the west", given that so many of the "I'll never buy an EV / I drive 5,000 miles every day in my diesel without problems" brigade state battery life/replacement and long range drive requirements as their primary issues with EVs. My first thought was it's a knock-off of the Tesla with arguably nicer styling in places, but the taxi light/LIDAR on the roof, and the fact it'll be WAY more expensive than the Tesla in the UK just makes it a complete non-starter
The polestar 2 has a 0-60mph time of 4.4, 4.5 seconds.. The NIO is a conservative 4 seconds with a more likely 3.8 seconds with one medium weight driver & not loaded in the back..
Thank you, Fully Charged! Excellent presentation! ET7 has received critical rewiews at best so far here in Denmark. Very slow charging in the mild winter weather we have this year are a common problem (described by many users in the NIO app), as well as a freezing center screen. Not very convincing so far. But the 150 Kwh battery is a joker, if and when it becomes available. I would choose an Mercedes EQE over a NIO so far.
The 150kwh battery would be very useful for those caravan types, and as it has battery swap features you can choose when you want a 150 kWh or a 75kWh depending on your needs.
@@showme360 Assuming they can actually fit a 150kWh battery in it. No one has been able to do that, even on a much larger EV like a Model S, so there are significant doubts that can even be done.

Great review, of the Nio ET5 Elliot. It's worth mentioning that Nio's self driving system is reliant on Lidar, Radar, Ultrasonics & Cameras for it's HD Maps based self driving system. It's not simply an optional extra, it wouldn't work without LIDAR unfortunately...
I wish that makers of EVs would get away from the notion that an EV has to be full of automation features that add little to the ownership experience and may be prone to annoyance or even failure when used in real world conditions. (The door open button is a good example.)
😂 Sad news, they won’t selling in the US in few years. Because of the example like Huawei being bullied by the US government. Those car companies would not take the risk to forward to American markets.
Very interesting Elliot, thanks. Not sure about ‘large’ boot though, 381l is Golf sized and no supplementary frunk means poor comparison as a family car. I seem to recall that Tesla were originally proposing battery swapping but nothing came of it, do we know why? Unlike Elon to miss a good idea…
I can’t agree on the doorhandle concept. Classic is one action and at the et5 it’s two? In classic: pull the handle THEN push the door. Et5: press button push the door. IMO the classic pull to push does make less sense then the new concept. So I really like it (like in a Tesla Model 3)
Great car ! Much better looks (interior and exterior) than model 3 but here in Europe it is much much more expensive almost by 50% than model 3 standard range.
How are the Chinese auto manufacturers achieving such high quality new cars so quickly. It took the Japanese and Koreans more than decade each to match the quality of the european cars of their era's. China seems to be romping ahead with EV's in well within a decade. This is fantastic for making EV's more affordable and available, but how are they doing it?
Thanks Elliot! Looking forward to seeing you at FCL Sydney AU! :) This is a nice car but love to know the coefficient of drag and what the WLTP or EPA range figures are even more real-world would be good. Agree with how you open the door, what is wrong with a door handle to open the door. I worry about the glass roof particularly in hot days not unless it has a cover like the Atto 3 has and other EV's. That tow rating is amazing though wish more EV's had 1,000+kg tow rating, I've seen compact ICE cars with tow bars/hitch on them so there should be no reason for all EV's to have towing capacity.
Fellow Aussie here & I agree that the unshielded glass roof is stupid. A cheaper & better way to go would be a full metal roof & light-coloured roof linings. Regarding towing with an EV, realise that it would drain the battery extremely quickly, especially at highway speeds. The new interior door release & mirror operation are definitely improvements, as they are protruding physical toggle switches, which, once accustomed to, would mean that you keep your eyes on the road.
Elliot's reviews are always obnoxious when he spends time telling people what they don't need in a car. I like 1,000 watts in my sound system! Say YOU don't need it Elliot.
The price is not that good. Considering the increase when it comes to the european market, I doubt it's gonna undercut Tesla. Especially since Tesla decreased their prices recently. But the finition is better, that's for sure. I'm not sure that everyone is gonna be into the robot thing, I don't know if the info-tainment system is any good, I don't know the real range or the efficiency. I don't know the recharge speed (important, since, let's face it: battery replacement stations for Nio only are not gonna open everywhere here). The writing in the video says a lot of "nothing". "God like levels of perfection", "comes with ***km of CLTC range", saying that since it's less expensive than the Model 3 when you lease the battery, they are undercutting Tesla. No, you still pay 140€ more per month ! Meh, this channel has a lot of good content and information, but often it spend so much time praising the car that nothing interesting is said.

Thanks Elliot. Looks like a great car, but I’m doubting the whole battery swapping thing. I don’t see it becoming something widespread for a single brand. And on the practical side, getting large grid connections on that scale might be a problem for the next couple of years in some countries.
The idea is great for road trips, but much rather have fast charging and/or inductive charging or such.
I could go on...
battery swap aside, NIO evs are still brilliant EVs, with better fit and finishing than Tesla
Also battery swap might not suit your country, but it certainly does in China
In my geography, long distances with little to no infrastructure…..a battery swap scenario is ideal….no charging anxiety.
That’s not a soft close door 😀 soft close is where you close the door gently and then an actuator takes over and closes it fully. Nice job otherwise

Yes yes very bad!
So strange to listen to him referring the R&D and this R&D seems to translate into copying Tesla...
This must have been done before Tesla’s price cuts.
Can you guys start another channel and re review some of these cars a few years down the track. Call it fully charged rewind and just let people know how some of these vehicles are going quality wise, battery status, durability etc. just a thought as it would certainly help buyers looking at getting into the used EV market.
Thanks.
Great idea! I also want to know more on the real-life kWh usage.
Seriously. Treating these like equals in established markets where players have been around for a decade or more is ridiculous.

What a beautiful car! NIO's whole lineup looks fantastic. Crazy how the ET5 makes Tesla's cars appear very dated.
Because this expensive chinese is thirsty 😂
@@theolich4384 ~240km is still pretty decent.
with the diminishing returns on adding more and more battery, it may be you would get more than that, but also i feel we need more 20/30/40kwh batteries, without their own weight to drag around they would be much moree efficent. That doesnt make sense but you probably know what i mean.

I think Nio is far too expensive and a company that thinks battery swapping can work -well Elon tried that very bad idea - as Sandy Munro says ‘you never want to have connectors being stressed’ and especially high voltage ones plus others !
Oh it’s just $10800 every 5 years for battery rental !, a reason for the cars worth dropping out of the sky - just imagine the 2nd 5 years
Every car beats that !, even ICE costs
Am I the only one looking at this and simply seeing a Nio “Model 3”?
The model 3 had a price cut 2 weeks ago in China and is now 229,900 yuan. Which is significantly cheaper than this car! Obviously the model 3 has a smaller battery but is more efficient and has no monthly fees for battery.
Wait, you don't have to pay for a monthly fee if you buy the battery, no?
One added feature I would like to see is a 220V AC outlet somewhere, say in the trunk, which I could use to power my electric chain saw, welder or even a kettle.
Same range as a standard model 3 with a higher price is not much of an undercut.
And little cargo space 😏
Probably higher charging times as well.

Good review. Don't forget to place your order..
@MrAl99807
Nio is expected to reach profitability in less years then Tesla did. The above post is Tesla Fanboy
Gorgeous looking car. Definitely my next purchase.

There are endless videos that geek out over specs, how much wider this model is in mm.... nah, super happy with Eliots style

Very focused on aesthetics which is always a personal choice. Mechanical specs are much more useful than a sales pitch about how beautiful it is. PS I think its bloody ugly with the warts on the roof and the back end looks like a large letter box slot, but that's just my opinion.
Drag Coefficient has NOTHING to do with keeping the car planted firmly on the ground. 2m13s in.
Looks nice but that’s about it, still prefer model 3 or y for price and tech. Feels more like a sales pitch than a review, terrible
Great review, thank you.

Yeah, same thought here...
Yep, and the front is like someone took a Kona face and stretched it over a Model 3.
I can’t wait to test this out in the USA
The polestar 2 has a 0-60mph time of 4.4, 4.5 seconds.. The NIO is a conservative 4 seconds with a more likely 3.8 seconds with one medium weight driver & not loaded in the back..
I mean, I want NIO just for the Swapp. Most Important, really Matters. And a tow Hook. Most Important. I wait for NIO SwapNGo Stations in the EU.

The back looks like a Aston Martin DBX.
A 50 kWh battery would be interesting to see.
I wish that makers of EVs would get away from the notion that an EV has to be full of automation features that add little to the ownership experience and may be prone to annoyance or even failure when used in real world conditions. (The door open button is a good example.)

In China, its price is also 50% higher than that of the Model 3.
Model Y unless chinese car is way way cheaper, but this car is not cheaper and not available in Finland.
I think he mentions the coefficient drag at the beginning when talking about the gaps at the front headlights.
Great car and brand overall but still too expensive...!
That Nomi thing on the dashboard which turns it's head is so scary
Elliot's reviews are always obnoxious when he spends time telling people what they don't need in a car. I like 1,000 watts in my sound system! Say YOU don't need it Elliot.
So when exactly is it supposed to reach Europe and in particular, the UK?
What is the price range and mileage. I don’t like the battery swap idea. Rent a battery?
