One thing I've always liked about Winter Soldier is that it didn't feel like a standard superhero movie, it felt like a well written conspiracy thriller disguised as a superhero movie
That's the strength of the genre, you can mix them with other genres and get things like a neo western (Logan), a coming of age (Homecoming, Shazam), a space fantasy (Guardians), war periods (First Avenger and WW), an epic (Infinity War and Endgame) and many more
exactly. and then ragnarok is a pure slapstick comedy. god i love the MCU.

You have the sitcom parody/Twilight Zone anthology esque mystery drama with Wandavision, FaWS looks like a buddy cop spy thriller, Loki is described as a crime thriller with obvious time travel shenanigans, Ms. Marvel also seems like coming of age and so on. I love that variety
It needed to be, with Thor 2 being the most hated at that point and Iron Man 3 being quite divisive. A strong movie that doesn't follow the typical MCU format as much, and pushes the idea of blending genres.

One of the heartbreaking things about Bucky is that even with all the brainwashing and mindwipes, they still had to convince him that he was doing the right thing. That he was a soldier for the good guys. They couldn’t turn him evil.

I loved that part so much because it showed how inspirational Cap's speech was and how he can motivate people to fight for him so quickly because he's just that type of person you wanna get behind and follow.
Up until Endgame that speech and the guy's refusal to launch was my favorite scene in the MCU. "Portals" has it beat now, but no shame in coming 2nd place to that.

Can I just say, immense kudos for staying in the dark as to who the Winter Soldier was.
That's the unfortunate thing about being a fan of the comics: you kinda knew most of the twists.
From the Winter Soldier to Ned Leeds: you know "who" they are so it's hard to be surprised. But I can still get enjoyment when other people find out the reveal!
Based on her reaction to this movie, Natalie is going to be yelling and screaming so much during Captain America Civil War. It's going to be great! XD

I can recall yelling and screaming a lot during "Civil War" . . . out of sheer frustration and annoyance. It's not a favorite of mine.
Civil War is one of my favourites because of the conflicting opinions, the discussions and when everyone is super powered they can do some cool fight sequences

Cap America's shield doesn't just come back...Before he throws it, he figures out how to make it bounce back to him. It's like a 3-D pool trick every time.

And I only mentioned Wolverine and Captain America together because they actually fought together in WWII.

She should do the Robert Redford movies. _The Sting_ and _Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid_ and _All the President's Men,_ and of course _Three Days of the Condor._ And the others. I think she'd love _Sneakers_ too. Redford is rarely involved with any real stinkers, and most of his movies can be considered classics.

@@elbruces I don't think the algorithm can predict exactly how that person will be a future threat or what they'll become, just that they'll be one. Strange was probably just calculated to be someone with high intellect and influence like Tony.
There's no way they would predict Steven Strange would become the Sorcerer Supreme. There are too many random accidents involved in that.

Natasha used one of her electric stun thingies to disable the chest-eviscerating doohickey Pierce was threatening to kill her with. With that threat neutralized (and Natasha herself with it, momentarily), Fury had the green light to put Pierce down like a dog with his pistol.

My favorite MCU movie. The fight choreography was amazing. Especially the fight with The Winter Soldier, Black Widow, and Captain America.
I'll never stop loving the elevator fight scene. A true classic.
Bucky is pretty much my favorite character in the MCU. Because of what he has gone through, especially up to this point, the potential for character development is enormous.

I love this movie. Watching the black and white, naive and all around good Steve get thrust into the murky world of espionage was great. Perfect character development moment for him.

Most claustrophobic fight ever.
I've always said... this is my favorite of the Marvel movies because, frankly, you can leave out all the super hero stuff and it's still an engaging spy thriller.
The only thing about it though is you really have to suspend your disbelief to believe that scientist uploaded his brain to that ancient computer. That's like the only thing I could nitpick and it doesn't even really bother me that much.
Nothing crazier than some of the old Bond movies. You ever seen Moonraker?

Yeah, it took a direct blow from Thor's hammer. It absorbs impact. Don't know if it has the same properties as Black Panther's suit, which absorbs blows then reflects the energy back.

I love the AOS show but it didn't show the organisation in a good light either in my opinion. There was a lot of double standards and hypocrisy that we as the viewers were expected to overlook because "SHIELD are the good guys."

Winter Soldier is, to this day, my favorite MCU movie. Avengers Infinity War is a close second and Civil War gets the 3rd spot.

The fun thing was that they timed the storyline in the Agents of SHIELD TV series so that the HYDRA story happened in the series in the same week as Winter Soldier came out.
And it changed the series forever. Still my favorite MCU series
It totally disrupted the story direction for the show as they were given short notice about the big reveal. The slow build was done and gone, now the showrunners were in "two-minute drills" mode to use a football idiom. The amount of brainstorming was astounding. Definitely worth seeing.
It was a horrible fact.
Anyone who didn't see the movie on opening weekend was unnecessarily spoiled about Hydra by AoS. I was furious at the TV show.

Hydra didn’t appear until after the movie premiered so if you kept watching the show and didn’t watch the movie when they told you to go watch it with all the promos for the movie and the Nick in the car scene literally as a end cut scene then your fault really
@@mmattson8947 I mean, they’re two interconnected stories in the same universe. So they technically spoil each other. As somebody who DID see winter soldier on opening weekend, it spoiled a big element of the show. You may have prioritized caring more about the movie (which I get) but both also had elements and secret identities that prevented each from totally spoiling the other.

As amazing as infinity war and endgame are, this is my favorite Marvel movie. Winter soldier had the best story and best action scenes.

I'm definitely one of those who's been waiting to see this, knowing the parts of the mcu that she likes the most, this one has them in spades.
Exactly. I always thought the MCU really started its best run with this movie (still my favourite MCU movie to this day, it's flawless). There are a couple of not so solid MCU movies after this one, but never as bad as Thor: The Dark World. I'm talking here of just a couple of installments against other 13 really enjoyable movies. That's a pretty great track record that it's even more impressive when you think it was achieved in just 5 years.

This movie was a game changer. I remember going to this movie Thursday night for the preview...
I was so hype because I knew it would blow up that weekend and years later I STILL think it’s Marvels BEST solo film movie and best sequel. BTW watch Robert Redford in “All The Presidents Men” (1976) and “Three Days of the Condor” (1975) which both greatly informed the Russo brothers political thriller take on this film.

Sonny Chiba quote. Though he says Ezekiel 25:17 the full quote doesn't exist in the Bible (maybe 6 or 7 words of it in that verse). It is however in Karate Chiba almost verbatim, also misattributed to Ezekiel.

Man that Winter Soldier theme is so good it’s unreal.
One of THE best pieces of music ever composed for a comic book movie.
Did you know the prolonged “scream” that makes up the first part of the theme, they took Bucky’s scream as he fell from the train in the first movie and distorted the hell outta it, really clever.
That other sound though, the more shrill scream sound is honestly terrifying, like something out of a horror movie, sounds like it should be the theme for a super psychotic villain though, not a guy like Bucky who we’re all rooting for to get his memory back.
I only realized last week that Scarlet Johansen had the co-starring part in 'The Horse Whisperer' when she was 15 or 16 years old. It was directed and starred Robert Redford. It must have been pretty rad when they reunited in Winter Soldier.
This is honestly my favorite solo mcu film, i wish we got atleast another dark mcu film like this cause most ones nowadays are filled with too much jokes

well they operated on him.... he did die, BUT they used the same syringe for coulson they used on nick.. it stopped his heart.

so this is my favorite movie of all time and i've seen it well over a 100 times, so to watch someone watch it for the first time and really truly appreciate it and watch it warms my heart. also, when she was SCREAMING at steve/bucky at 17:55 i fucking *lost it*

Wow, I had no idea. The Winter Soldier is like a combination of a superhero film and a spy thriller like James Bond, Jason Bourne and Mission Impossible. I’m surprised the Russo Brothers are great at doing comedy too.

Also the fact that the villain is unknown is what makes it thrilling, he don't know who to chase and who to fight. This is why Ca:tws is one of Marvel's best.

The bald scientist with the glasses in the scene when they "wipe" Bucky is Ed Brubaker, the writer who co-created the Winter Soldier in the comics. (He wasn't involved in creating Bucky, but it was his idea to bring Bucky back from the dead as Winter Soldier.)
Coulson's name is easy to remember if you think about how Thor called him "Son of Coul" !
Well. Every last name ending in -son comes from a time when lastnames where the father's name with -son suffix. Ex. Wilson (Son of Will). That's why Thor's name is Thor Odinson and Odin's is Odin Borson.
Revisiting these movies after seeing Endgame reminds me why I love Marvel so much. Everything is connected and wrapped with a bow. Amazing.

This movie is very much an homage to the 1970's Robert Redford spy flick _Three Days of the Condor._ I highly recommend that one all on its own.

I love that guy. They got him back for Age of Ultron, too-Nick had him on the bridge of the helicarrier for the evacuation of that city. I was so tickled when he showed up again 🥰
I love how the film is explaining what's going on to the audience and you're STILL so confused LIKE GIRL THEY ARE TELLING YOU WHAT IS HAPPENING
I'm glad you picked up on how terrifyingly topical and relevant this film is. It took a political concept and COULD have beaten you over the head with it, but instead hid it inside a highly entertaining superhero film. It's probably my favorite MCU film. The climax where the Helicarriers are slowly acquiring targets is as tense as I've ever been in the MCU until... well, you'll get there.
Fun fact: the acrobatic goon from the opening boat scene is based on a (ridiculous) Marvel villain called Batroc the Leaper. His comic outfit is pink/purple and yellow, and the movie character's outfit shares the color scheme.
All credit to him as an athlete and performer. He was probably the perfect pick for this role. I tried to pick a simple description for the character. The actor was perfect and I would never describe him in real life as an acrobatic goon. I'd probably catch a swift boot to the head lol.

This was a very entertaining reaction-- I was laughing so many times. I consider this film of the most perfect action films and MCU films.
My favorite thing about every Natalie reaction is her laugh. Everytime she just bursts out laughing out loud it’s just the funniest and cutest thing ever.

finally. This was the turning point for the MCU going from good to Great. Also Jenny Agutter is always amazing.
The Winter Soldier moniker was a reference to the Cold War. In the comics, he’s an agent of Russia rather than Hydra (hence the big red star on his arm), and executed several clandestine missions/assassinations under their control from the time he was recovered after WWII to present day, up until he recovered his memories.
The fact that she didn't realize or didn't know that it was Bucky the whole time till the reveal was amazing.

This one is still my favourite comic book movie in general to this day. I find it simply flawless, taking a very gritty take but embracing the comic book aspect (unlike Nolan Batman films). And on top of that it manages to work well as a stand alone film despite being part of a saga of a dozen installments.
Yup, and Civil War. We need more Captain America movies.

Another interesting point: You mentioned in the post-mortem having trouble picking out a specific person responsible for the villainy. That's also intentional, as the whole concept of Hydra is in their motto: "Cut off one head, two more shall take its place." Hydra has many heads of power.

Zola seemed more of a pushover assistant to Red Skull in the first movie. I like how they made him more malevolent and creepy in this movie and became a mastermind in Hydra’s continued development.
