I just love how Dr Strange defeats Dormammu by getting him to rage quit
Proving Stephen is a gamer.
It's a very Spider-Man way of doing it... annoying your enemy into defeat.
That's called a pro gamer move my guy
He used Commander Data's stratajema gambit.
Well he basically just made Dormammu realize that he could never win because he will save the universe even if it takes an infinite time loop of pain to stop him.
I found The Ancient One's death really sad actually. Because she's such a strong character but right before she dies she admits she's afraid of death and she holds his hand for comfort... :'(
Same
@@lorettabes4553 Courage isn't the absence of fear, it's overcoming it. It takes even more courage to admit to fear. But the Ancient One had seen this moment coming, and lived with that knowledge, for centuries. Imagine how much courage that takes.
"Are these guys sorcerers?"
No, they're wizards without a hat.
They are Masters of the Mystic Arts.
They're Harry Dresden? XD
Well the term used is Sorceror as Strange is known as the Sorceror Supreme. Sorceror and Wizard are really synonyms outside Dungeons and Dragons which uses them as different ways to use magic.
Safety Dance is about Dr. Strange? I can see it, the lyrics track pretty well.

Hardly wild guessing. Great induction!
Couldn't believe she was so wrong yet so right at the same time 😂
Best guessing ever ~
Way back when… I did some wild guessing that shocked me when I was right… when a friend (before I had seen the movie) explained the T1000 to me, I told him that i had to venture a guess that the movie would have to end at a steel mill.
I also once piped in on a thread about which speciality creature would be picked for the then upcoming Indy 4… I voiced that, depending on where they located the movie at, I would choose the Amazon ants that crawled over people (I had visualized an old MacGyver (1985 series) episode for that.
Apparently Strange spent hundreds or thousands of cycles getting killed by Dormammu. It's one of the greatest feats of mental fortitude in any superhero film/comic/genre etc.
"It's Not About You"
It's also the reason why he seems more skilled in later movies because he was practicing and learning throughout
They say Phil Connors was stuck in Punxsutawney for 10,000 years reliving Groundhog Day.
@@clarkbarrett6274 Doesn't that mean it took him 10,000 years to become a better person?
@@3Rayfire Well, yes better enough to get out of the time loop he was in. Of course Phil had to learn the same lesson Dr. Stephen Strange needed to learn...."it's not about you."
We could all probably do better on that count.
Fun fact: Strange wasn’t in the other dimension few minutes. He was there long enough to gain more mastery over his powers
I think it's been confirmed to have been 10 years in the loop. But who knows? Long time, regardless.
@@AnxietyRat jesus fucking christ, 10 years?

Wong is a real character in the comics. Hes Stephen assistant, confidant, attendant, butler, and best friend plus a whole host of other things. There is a real great story where Wong gets cancer and Stephen basically breaks magic to heal him.
The bad thing about Wong's character back in the 60s was that he was the stereotypical Chinese manservent and was so for decades
It has only been recently that he's been otherwise
@@dragonweyr44 Agreed, but its good they made the effort to fix it.
One of the interesting things is that the actor playing Wong IS actually a Wong. What's more hes a "Benedict" so there are two Benedicts in this movie :)
Yes! _Dr. Strange: The Oath_ is a great story
Wow, I always thought Wong was just his house boy.
For anyone wondering, that story was 'Doctor Strange: The Oath'
This is a unique Marvel movie because Doctor Strange outwits the evil demon with his brain, rather than punching it or blasting it with a blue laser.
Well said. Why they all have to fix problems by punching all the time, green lantern, batman, Superman, whoever, doesn't matter from which planet and how strong, ends up rage punching the enemy. Is all the producers brains are able to imagine?
Exactly right 😊
"I do not have steady hands like that....I wonder what's gonna happen to him that's gonna make him a superhero."

There's a book series that is basically written around this premise. If I ever remember the name of it I'll edit this comment with the author/titles
What I love about Stephen Strange is that the beginning of the movie is clearly meant to make us think “This guy is such an enormous a**hole, I will never be able to root for him”. And then by the end of the movie, he’s without a doubt fully redeemed himself, and you find yourself rooting for him.
I root for him because he's doing good things, but I still think he's a real ass and can't really like him and definitely think Dr Palmer (McAdams) is too good for him. I still like the movie though.
@@jonasfermefors Yeah, I never grew to like Strange even in the following movies. Even if the scene with Dormammu was cool it's not enough to make him an appealing character for me.
@@jonasfermefors Oh yeah, he's kind of like Reed Richards or Hank Pym in the comics. They're pricks with huge egos.

One thing that almost everyone misses when Dr.Strange yells at Kristine in the apartment is that above all else, he's scared. He's facing the one obstacle that he can't get around and at the time there are no more moves on the board. That's why he lashes out.
He played that well, but unlike reality, it didn't last years.
Fun fact: towards the end of the end credits, there is a small PSA warning against texting while driving.
And towards the beginning of the movie, there's a REALLY BIG one.
The part that makes that PSA message even funnier is that whole "the warnings come at the end" joke.

@@andrewe2057 Where is it exactly? I can't find it and I've seen the movie a crazy amount of times.
The way Strange defeated Dormammu in this movie is a classic comic-book Dr. Strange tactic. Strange routinely faces more powerful opponents, but he wins through his brilliant insights into the nature of his foes.
Strange’s strategy here reminds me of the plight of the antimatter Lazarus in the Star Trek OS episode “The Alternative Factor.”
Natalie: I have no idea who is Doctor Strange. My guess he does time traveling.
MCU: We really should hide spoilers much better.
That was an amazing and hilarious guess.
Wrong Doctor Nat. Well okay he does do some time stuff but it's not what defines him.

her guesses are always like... weirdly close to what it actually is, but always just a tiny bit off.
"The Dark Dimension doesn't sound good, man. You need another pitch." LOL! True that! His villain monologue was entirely unconvincing.
Yes. Sounds bad, but in the comics the Dark Dimension is called that way, because it has not much light and apart from being ruled by Dormmamu it's not bad. At some times it has other rulers.
Wong, the Cloak, and the eye of Agamotto were all hugely iconic parts of the comics. I think they did a great job of representing them here. Dr. Strange was always one of the go-to characters for anything supernatural. A lot of characters had their niche, and then they'd all team up for the really big time bad guys.
Except the Eye could do a bunch of other things except be a hiding place for another item from the comics.
imo, his confrontation with dormamu really really did the work of MAKING HIM A HERO.... they compressed that section as a montage but the gist of it is that strange died INNUMBERABLE times in horrific ways, OVER AND OVER AGAIN... to save humanity. i mean... what a way to humble yourself and be a servant to the world.... and what a character arc!
As a medical student, I can't help but notice a lot of the things in Doctor Strange's journey really parallel one's journey to be a doctor. One of them is the "younger doctors" always thinking they're ready for everything, but our superiors always prove us otherwise XD

The time loop at the end wasn't just a few minutes; It lasted long enough to get a God like being, outside of time, to beg for it to be ended. Adding in on top of that, that they both remember every loop and that Strange wasn't just letting Dormammu win he was fighting back. It's fair to say that Strange's skill with magic by the end of the Loop was a lot higher than when it started.
TLDR: Dr Strange grinded the Dormammu fight until he was max lvl.
Fun fact: The filmmakers based the movements and behavior of the Cloak of Levitation off of the Magic Carpet from Aladdin. And that is why it’s probably my favorite thing to exist in this movie.
In the MCU the Cloak isn't just a tool as in the comics. It's Strange's friend and ally.
Theres a theory that Aladdin is set thousands of years in the future. I like to think Cloak IS Carpet.
I didn't know that but that's exactly what the Cloak reminded me of
Benedict Wong played Kublai Khan in Marco Polo. Amazing performance
I think it must have been a "Making of" Aladdin thing I saw that showed the Disney animation process letting a cartoon "Sad Sack" emote...
I like the bit with Wong laughing - earlier in the movie Strange is talking about how others liked working with him and laughed at his jokes and Wong questions whether anyone found his jokes funny who didn't work for him, giving Stephen pause. Near the end, Wong laughs at Stephen's joke but Stephen is like his boss now - while his laugh could be genuine, it also could be that Wong's just buttering him up.
You called it, not just once, but three times.
He's a doctor, a mystic, and a time traveler.
Those Marvel guys were masters at foreshadowing, right? Just two words and....
Fun little music fact: the music Strange is listening to when he is getting ready and then gets in the car is Pink Floyd’s Interstellar Overdrive, from their first album Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The album cover from 1968 ‘s A Saucerful of Secret ,their second album, has pictures from the first Doctor Strange comic . Great tribute to Pink Floyd and their appreciation of Doctor Strange from 53 years ago.
I appreciate how his musical tastes call back to the time frame of the comic. Nice bridging from the comic to the present.
Strange has some of the best character development in the MCU. From selfish doctor to selfless savior of the entire Earth.
But still a bit of an ass, which makes him a fun character.
Cumberbatch has said it was an exciting acting challenge to embody such a huge character arc over such a short period.
Isn't that basically a condensed version of Tony's arc? Selfish prick to saviour of the goshdanged universe?
@@maniak6496 Yeah, that's what makes their interactions so fun!
And yet, in both roles he's pretty much just living out a messiah complex. He's gone from saving individuals out of ego (recall the guys he refuses to treat because he doesn't want to tarnish his perfect record) to saving the world/dimension, also kind of out of ego.
One of the things I love most about the movie is in Stan Lee's cameo the book he's reading is literally an author who did psychedelics and his visions while under the influence. Doctor Strange is in this super trippy world and they come across Stan Lee reading a book of someone who went on a drug trip.
Aldous Huxley's "The Doors of Perception" about his usage of mescaline.

What I find funny is how the actress who plays Christine is the love interest for Benedict Cumberbatch’s character (who he also played as Sherlock Holmes in the TV series “Sherlock”) and she also played Irene Adler (who’s one of Sherlock Holmes’ love interests) in Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes movies. So in a way, she played the love interests for both Sherlock Holmes. lol
Another point of interest, Martin Freeman (who was Benedict Bandersnatch's Watson) is now in the MCU as well as Jude Law (who was RDJ's Watson). So now we have both Sherlocks and both Watsons in the MCU.
Additional: Henry Cavill has now portrayed Sherlock in "Enola Holmes" which just proves that if you play a superhero long enough, you'll eventually play Sherlock Homes.

When Natalie said "you guys weren't doing a good job protecting Earth because aliens got in" I thought two things:

I think for some people it's very hard to understand. And Strange is a hard character to like at times. So I always thought it was pretty rated correctly. A pretty awesome movie visually if you can take it and a story of growth for Strange.

And this movie introduced a concept that's important in phase 4 😂
It's my absolute favorite of all the MCU movies
@Cyberdemon Mike My frustration with it was that Dormamu, for such a terrible, 'all-powerful' (though apparently less powerful than a single Infinity Stone) antagonist, ended up being such a one-dimensional and facile villain! Nothing said that he had to keep killing Strange _quickly_ -- Why not give the Doctor an excruciatingly painful death that takes a couple of months to finally kill him, and then do _that_ a few hundred times, over and over and over, and see just who wants to keep that temporal loop going ad infinitum... 🤔🙄🤨
@Cyberdemon Mike Kaecilius and Dormamu are, essentially, just two aspects of the same villain/antagonist. Mads' character is basically just a tool/puppet for his master's use; one that allows Dormamu to work within Earth's magical protections to help bring them down and facilitate the ultimate invasion.
I still think Cap 1 is most underrated. It may not be super flashy or fx heavy, but it’s tight and has that serial adventure feel.

I love Doctor Strange! I wasn't super high on his movie but it was still a good introduction to him. In the comics he's more like a hyper-altruistic magic MacGyver, who doesn't take other powerful beings, seriously.
I think what they did with him in Thor Ragnarok was much more true to character, with how he treats gods, demons and other super powered beings.
Wong is a long running pre-existing character from the comics. Benedict Wong is SOOOOOOOO good in the role
In canon, Dr Strange lived a subjective 10 years in that time loop with Dormammu, trying everything he learned and everything he could think of to fight back. That's a big reason why Doctor Strange is so powerful. There's no training so thorough as live-fire training that resets every time you die.
Also, the reason (in my opinion) why Kaeciliius and his zealots could break through into Strange's reversed timestream is because of their connection to the Dark Dimension, a place beyond time.

The Doctor Strange comic came out in the 1960s and was a very 'trippy' comic. I'm glad they brought that feel into the movies.

This film is sooooo trippy.
A few basic changes from the comic book. Wong was Strange's butler, the Ancient One was a male Tibetan, Dormammu had a body and a flaming head, Mordo was his major enemy, and if you rewatch Winter Soldier, you'll hear Stephen Strange on the list that Hydra intended to kill.
Fun thing: just before Strange crashed, the guy on the phone said about a guy with a spinal injury, he’s talking about Rhodey’s injury from Civil War

@@phousefilms Despite the Winter Soldier Easter egg, Doctor Strange take place throughout 2016, that’s been confirmed by directors.
@@phousefilms Actually, they are talking about Rhodey's injury from Civil War. Because in Endgame, the Ancient One tells Hulk that Stephen Strange is going to become a sorcerer after 5 years, putting this film's events after Civil War.
And no, this does not take place before Winter Soldier, the reasons being:
1) The rest of the world has no idea about sorcerers and the events of this movie, because Strange reversed time and fixed everything. So why would SHIELD know about Strange and the sorcerers?
And
2) In Winter Soldier, Arnim Zola talks about how they can use a person's past to predict his future. And that's what they use to find the people who potentially can be a threat to HYDRA. Granted they couldn't have predicted that Strange would become a sorcerer, but they weren't talking about that. Strange is an extremely skilled, highly intelligent and wealthy man, who likely has a lot of influence and knows a lot of people. That's the kind of threat they were talking about. He would've been a threat because he could use his influence against them.
Steven Strange was mentioned by name in Winter Soldier.

Oh, your question is going to be answered all too quickly, and given your dislike for Tony Starks driving, I don't think you'll enjoy the next few minutes...
This was the moment Ive waited for when you said this back in Ironman 1
Oml same!
Yup, I remembered this comment when watching. (Or similar?)
Was waiting for the reaction.
Yeah, me too, “I don’t ever think I’ve disliked a protagonist so quickly...”
And here’s me thinking “didn’t you say almost the exact same thing about tony in iron man 1
@@trayolphia5756 I think she meant she found a new level of dislike. Maybe it's me but Natalie doesn't seem so turned around to the good doctor's turning to good. There's only one moment of self-sacrafice, the rest of the time he still seems like the arrogant ...person... he started out as.
Unless there is more that she reveals in her full review over on patreon. I think Natalie likes more the humble sort of hero, like Steve Rogers.
@@Leon-wz1js well iron man one has tony being a “similarly douchy” guy in context...over the course of the films, we’ve seen that tony keeps his “haughtiness” and confidence, and if she hadn’t seen the slow changes and developments, that confidence can be interpreted as arrogance...yet we haven’t yet had that time to see and watch growth of dr strange...
My point was simply she comments about disliking strange for behaving in his ways, and as many had done during the release timeframe...had seemingly forgotten she once had the same view of tony...
17:38 What have we learned: Always save before every boss fight, every gamer knows that.
"He even sounds like House". Yea. British guy doing an American accent. I can see it.
Dormammu’s design was actually done by motion capture by Cumberbatch himself. It makes sense, since Dormammu is a formless entity, so he’s simply imitating the being he’s facing.
Wong: "We must be ready"
Strange: "We'll be ready"
Nat: "How you gonna be ready?"
I don't know why that made me laugh! 😂
"Is that Mads Mads Mikkel Mikkelsen. I don't know how to say it." You nailed it.
For not knowing about Doctor Strange, you kept nailing a lot of things before they happened.
The Ancient One saw the Star Wars prequels.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong play great off of each other.
Tilda Swinton made a great Ancient One.
"we never lose our demons. we only learn to live above them."
The phone call right before the car crash talked about patients; one in particular was about mid-thoracic spinal injury. This case was actually Rhoady, after being accidentally shot down by Vision's laser in Captain America: Civil War
I love your reaction vids. You're almost too much fun.
Two quick things:
1) He learns, "so quickly" for two reasons. First, he's freaking brilliant. Second, his soul is literally studying while he sleeps.
2) He can't stop his hands from shaking, because he chooses not to. It's no longer the focus.
As you said at the end, this is a great character arc.
Have an amazing day!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this reaction! I really love your work in this channel but this in my humble opinion is the best of all!!!)) You even predicted the lines word to word)))) Also character wise you resembles Christine! And Rachel MacAdams is my favourite, I'm really 100 percent sure that she has a golden heart!!! So as you, Nat! Thank you again, this one is the champion of movie reactions! Greetings from Kazakhstan!!!
What's so great about these Marvel movies is that everyone has a favorite or a most hated. Some people haven't liked Dr. Strange and some people love it! And that's what's so great about it. Not every personality has to mesh. That's how we used to choose the comics!
I think my most hated is Winter Soldier...I'm just not a big fan of spy stuff, and there was a lot of that in Winter Soldier. Even with that, it's still a good movie.
@@TheKyrix82 And that's one of my favorites lool
@@big2033 Unlike with Star Was, I'm far less begrudging about what movies other people like in the MCU. I dislike Winter Soldier because I like to watch my superheroes do superhero things. Winter Soldier was very spy/conspiracy theory, which isn't what I want in my superhero flick. For other people, that's the exact flavor of pudding you wanted in the cup, so enjoy.
Cory Alexander's song *Run For Your Money* sounds like a song you would hear right after watching an animated movie at a cinema. I like it :P
When Nat says she would use the teleportation room just to go on hikes I kinda believe her.
"Are these guys, like, sorcerers? "
No, they are wizards without hats
If you didn’t realize, Mordo was the assassin in Serenity!
Err she said his name
One of the things I like about this movie, is that everything we see Strange and the other sorcerers do, we also see Loki, Odin and Freya, do. Which hints that there's a certain amount of similarity between Earth and Asgardian magic.
This was another awesome surprise from Marvel Studios.
The 1960s version in the comics drew a lot of art inspiration from the psychedelic stoner art of the day.
The whole thing was pretty surrealistic and very creative.
The fact that the film captured so much of that aesthetic, so well, was just awesome. :)
Wong is a real character in the Marvel Comics, and Wong is the character's actual name.
The *next time* you see Dr. Strange, it'll definitely be pretty fun.
One thing I didn't notice until viewing the movie several times: The first case his assistant gives him when he's driving in the rain is about a Col who suffered a spinal injury in an accident, and Dr. Strange turns down the case, saying it isn't enough of a challenge.
The Colonel being discussed is Col James Rhodes/War Machine after his injury in Captain America Civil War.
Wong is from the comics as Dr. Strange's assistant, and Baron Mordo is Dr. Strange's classic villian.
Fun Fact: There's a deleted scene from this movie that Strange helped the dog walk straight by tying a wood over its leg which is why Mordo is so eager to take him in.
Wow! Next step, it's Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2
I really didn't like Guardians of the Galaxy 2 very much. Which for me was a real bummer because I loved the characters and the first movie a lot but the second one really felt like it was going through the motions and isn't very memorable. I'm also not big on any of the three Thor movies. The past one was the best of the three but that was a low bar to beat. I own most of the Marvel movies but not the three Thor movies or GotG2 and Ironman 2. Those movies just don't measure up well.
Can't wait to see her reaction! It's probably my favorite Marvel film and one of my top favorite movies in general.
@@blitzgirl6522 It's up now on Natalie's Patreon
@@djlow9915 I'll have to wait the old-school way for it to come onto RUclips. I already have a good chunk of money going to Patreon so sadly I can't extend my support to all the great creators I enjoy.
@@blitzgirl6522 I salute you. You enjoy Nat's reaction here on YT, like so many of us. She really is the best at what she does.
i love staring at the fire place when parts of the movie aren't being recorded because copyright reasons obviously. Its so satisfying staring at it so thanks. 😊
